- - - - - - - - - - Energetic and completely enthralled by the battle, despite being on the losing side of things, Mikey's face radiated a sort of pure joy that was rather infectious. Not that Ratoo seemed to share that same feeling, the rodent's face one of chagrin, mostly due in part to seeing what it had to face. Flicking its tail, Ratoo let out a challenging squeak at Garrus, wincing when Mikey let out a cheer from behind. "Your Slakoth is just the best! I bet my mom would love if I acted like that, all chill and stuff!" the boy grinned, reaching up to shift his crooked hat. His grin didn't falter even as Icarus came down to take Garrus' place, though Ratoo looked less than pleased at the switch.
"Alright Ratoo, we got this! Show 'em how fast you are with Quick Attack!" Mikey called, pumping his fist in the air excitedly. Ratoo leapt into action, racing along the ground like a little speed demon and barreling into the Emolga. Wincing from the hit, Icarus wasted no time in returning the favour, the weak spark of electricity transforming into a concentrated jolt that sped towards Ratoo. Squealing in pain at the startling shock, Ratoo's fur stood on end and almost seemed to crackle with leftover static, gasping for breath. Although it had withstood the attack, it seemed the Thundershock had left it afflicted with paralysis, making every movement a momentous task.

The unadulterated joy that the boy radiated was somewhat contagious, but as mentioned, Sam was ready to go ahead and spend some alone time on the route. She hadn't even walked 5 steps. Literally. She had been presented her Pokemon, her egg hatched, and then Silver appeared. Wait, take that back. She had managed a few more steps. She did walk across the field to give Silver a swift punch to the face, so that counted for something. The reminder of the hit brought a smile to her face, although to her surprise, there was already one there to begin with. She was having fun and her anxiety hadn't gotten the best of her yet! She expected something would happen soon, but for now, she was really and truly enjoying herself, and she wasn't about to trade that for anything.
But anyways, after Silver, this boy came out and wanted to battle. It'd be nice to get Garrus up and moving, considering he wasn't doing anything but lazing about at the current moment. Let the baby enjoy it though; he'd worked hard enough! Icarus was well on his way to becoming an adept battler, and had already proven himself in battle. Garrus would have his moment, as long as he didn't sleep through it. Attention needed to be shifted back to the battle, so Samantha cleared her head and attempted to focus. The Rattata seemed to be a formidable opponent, by the way it growled and gnashed it's teeth. "Icarus, be careful, okay?" She murmured. The little glider shook his tail at her before turning to look over his shoulder and grin cheekily. His trainer needn't worry. This would be over soon.
Executing his attack, Icarus prepared to shock the Pokemon. However, Rattata was quick (hey, didn't Icarus have a quick attack too?) and managed to get the hit in before Icarus. However, it didn't seem to do much, considering Icarus stood back up and attacked. The electricity pulsed into Rattata, and for a brief second, Sam thought Icarus had knocked out the Pokemon in one hit. Wouldn't that be something? However, Rattata stood back up, albeit slowly. It twitched every now and again, indicating it was paralyzed. Sam felt a pang of regret, using an attack like that. She didn't like seeing Pokemon hurt, but she understood that it was the nature of battling. She'd survive, as would the Rattata. "That was a good hit, Icarus! Quick Attack, and I think this might be our match!" Winning two battles in a row would be something, wouldn't it?

"Ratoo use-" he was cut off as the Emogla went as fast as it could go. Icarus heard a call out from Samantha to use another attack. And like that, he flapped his web like wings as fast as he could and flung himself at the Rattata. The Rattata was knocked to the ground and fell with a thud. "No, Ratoo!" He called out, feeling sorry for his pokemon. He knew that Ratoo had done a fantastic job out on the field and this only proved his point that he didn't mind loosing any time. It was just the way of life with the pokemon trainer you either won or you lost, there was no inbetween. "I'm sorry, Ratoo! I'll make sure we train hard to take on other trainers in the future. For now, you need rest." He said as he called back Ratoo in his pokeball as he looked back at Icarus and as well as his trainer. "You guys were great out there and I learned a lot for this battle. If we meet another time in the future I'll give you another good battle." He said. That reminded him he had some spare change in his pockets as he fiddled around for the money that he owed Samantha as he tossed it on the ground. "You deserve that money for beating me. Good luck on your journey." He added before starting to say good bye and walked down the trail head towards the nearest pokemon center since he knew he had to heal up his Pidgey, and Rattata before he challenged anyone else. But he surprisingly didn't seem sad or upset that he lost, he was going to use what he learned to the test later on.

Icarus's speed and accuracy seemed to be two steps up from whatever Ratoo could accomplish. Unfortunately, Sam figured that the only reason she'd won is because Icarus had a few levels on the purple rat. That didn't explain anything about Garrus, but at least they were making headway. As Icarus slammed into the rat, before the boy could even get out another command, the Ratatta was no more. After returning the creature, the Youngster was on his way, departing after some dropped money and a few parting words. Icarus jumped over and grabbed the money, obediently waddling over to Sam to hand it up to her. Garrus rolled over and watched the boy leave, almost confused. Was the battle already over?
"Oh, thanks Icarus. A bit unnecessary, but thank you!" The idea that these young children were out in the world, giving up their lunch money and allowance if they lost a battle made Sam feel almost... gross. Taking a kid's money was one thing. Beating his Pokemon to a pulp AND getting his money was another. Either way, she shook it off and marked it down as one of the unwritten, understood rules of battling. She hoped she wouldn't have to hand money over to anyone, at least not frequently. If Wild Pokemon beat you, at least they didn't demand money. Stooping down to pick up Garrus as she mused to herself, Sam finally look more than seven steps away from the lab, finally getting on with her journey. So many damn trainers about! She hoped a few Pokemon were watching, or at least wanting to have a scuffle with one of her Pokemon.
For the first few minutes, it seemed as though nothing was happening. Icarus rested on Sam's hat (rightfully so, after the two battles!) while Garrus latched onto Sam like a backpack. Careful not to scratch her with his claws, Garrus hung and somehow managed to doze off. Though, Sam wasn't sure if it was a ruse or not... The sloth did have a bit of an adventurous streak. She kept a watchful eye on his claws, and tried to feel the claws on her side. If he let up, he was about to drop and get into trouble. However, so far that hadn't happened.
"Wait a sec... What's that, Icarus?"
Sam pointed to some of the tall grasses a ways ahead. Some strange, silver contraption was partially hidden from the light, but the glint wasn't mistakable. "That almost looks like a metal helmet..." She mused. Icarus jumped off of his trainer's head and glided down ontop of the metal contraption. It was indeed a helmet, and sealed tight! Icarus did his best to drag it back, but to no avail. "Oh, don't hurt yourself. I'm coming!" Picking up her pace, Sam jogged to the side of the helmet before picking it up. "Interesting..." She mused, before stuffing it into her backpack and continuing on her walk.

Route 29 | Its flock had always been quite the group of nomads. They had been everywhere in Pidgey's short life, or so it seemed anyway. There was always somewhere for them to go. But the weather here was less than favorable for flying, yet the lead Pidgeotto had insisted on coming down this way. None of them had really wanted too. It desperately fought the wind but its wings were too weak. For every foot it flew forwards, the wind knocked it two feet back. It growled to itself, and when something smacked into it, it went crashing towards earth. Poor Icarus would soon find itself smacked into by the bird, and it cried out as it bounced off Icarus and onto the ground. That had really hurt. Standing back up, it crowed angrily at the Pokemon and trainer it had been dumped off by. -- Attention! A Wild Pidgey (Level 7) has fallen away from its flock! And it looks angry! What do you do? |

So far the strange helmet had been one of the more curious things she'd found that hadn't had to do with another trainer. It was slightly cracked and dented, as though it hadn't been taken care of. Curiously enough, it was sealed shut, although Sam couldn't find anyway inside. Thus, it had been deposited in her bag for future inquiry. Maybe she could take it to someone and pry it open. Perhaps it had something valuable inside? Oh, but what if it was someone's prized posession? Or maybe they hit it here so nobody - especially not socially awkward weird trainers - would pick it up so they could come back for it later? Geez, Sam. Such a weirdo. Sam decided she'd end up turning it into the police in Cherrygrove if she couldn't find a way to get it open to track down the previous owner.
Icarus seemed to be getting into his own little spot of trouble. The nomad Pidgey had wandered into it, and by wandered, that actually meant slamming into. Icarus took a mini-tumble, and Sam let out a bit of a gasp. "Icarus, you okay?" She murmured, fumbling for her pokeball to return the creature before Pidgey started attacking him out of pure rage. The little spitfire of a Pokemon seemed to be angry enough to do it. But Icarus shook his head and pointed at Sam's bag. The trainer could only assume he meant to put the pokeball back. When Icarus rolled his eyes, Sam just shrugged. "I dunno what you're trying to tell me."
Icarus just swished his tail and focused on Pidgey. "Well, it doesn't matter. Try a Quick Attack! She suggested, and Icarus nodded, beginning to open his gliding membranes to jump into the air on the breeze. Given the season, crisp breezes were a dime a dozen (thankfully). Icarus found air in no time, and was already beginning to whir around the strange bird. When he got to an acceptable height, Icarus nose-dove down towards the Pidgey for his attack. Meanwhile, located safely on Sam's back, was Garrus. The Slakoth watched the battle lazily, and Sam felt his claws give way a bit, as if he was trying to slip off. "Whoah! No ya don't. You're staying right here where I can see and feel you." She gripped Garrus and held him in her arms while she watched the battle. Little rowdy lazy Pokemon...

Icarus had been curious about the helmet that Sam had found but it looked like the curious investigation of his own might have to wait. This pidgey came out of no where practically as the bird pokemon was angry about something. It seemed that its flock had gotten away leaving it behind in the dust. Maybe it was lost? Confused? Or just wanted to take its anger out on the first thing that it saw. It happened to be Sam and her pokemon in this case. It pranced around in the dirt kicking up sand in occasions and chirped loudly in a very annoyed voice. Once Icarus had managed to regain himself in the fight, he flapped his wings and regained some flight compared to the pidgey. He soon charged forward, increasing speed in a short amount of time. Because of this, he flew straight at the Pidgey and used a successful Quick Attack pelting the Pidgey making it a heavy attack. The Pidgey yelped in pain, seeing that it got a taste of its own medicine. Because of this it winced, but it refused to back down any time soon. The Pidgey's turn was up again as the pokemon, flapped its wings. It hopped forward and was rather springy in its actions. Because of this it charged heavily and struck Icarus again. It seemed the Emolga was getting tired of this pidgey smacking it around. Icarus probably wanted to show it who was boss, but he refrained knowing that was up to Sam at this point. The pokemon glided in the air, patiently waiting for another move to be called out for Sam. It was clear it was an exciting match against the battle. Battle

Sam knew that Icarus could zap the bird right out of the sky. There would be a fried Pidgey, and a victorious Emolga. However, she could feel Garrus craning his neck to watch the battle, and she could tell that the baby wanted to get in on the action. Gritting her teeth, Sam sighed and watched the battle progress. The Quick Attack had been executed flawlessly; Emolga's speed was unrivaled by any Pokemon she'd seen so far. It was almost too impressive, and that was something Sam could definitely live with. As she watched Icarus in the battle, she hoped the Pokemon wasn't getting frustrated by the lack of electric attacks. She hoped the mouse understood that Garrus wanted a turn too. But, until Garrus was a bit stronger, she'd have to baby him.
True to the Pokemon battle, the Pidgey retaliated. Sam's stomach lurched, but she'd have to get used to watching her Pokemon get hurt. Luckily, she hadn't come across a Pokemon or trainer that had so thoroughly trounced her Pokemon that hit made her want to quit. In fact, when Pidgey slammed into Icarus, it seemed as though the mouse had hardly felt it. "That's my glider!" Sam cheered, letting go of one of Garrus's paws long enough to pump her fist into the air. It seemed like a very sterotypical, traineresque thing to do. She was getting the hang of it, at least. However, with one paw free, Garrus began to slowly wriggle from Sam's grip, using his hand to physically move hers off his paw. Sam groaned in frustration, trying to grapple the Pokemon back. However, Garrus was already on the ground, shimmying down quickly like... well, very unlike a Slakoth. It seemed as though he had to take a breather, but Sam didn't pick him back up.
"Icarus, I think Garrus wants a turn..." She murmured, and the gliding Pokemon turned his head. Garrus began to slowly crawl to the electric glider, and when Garrus reached Icarus, the two switched out. Icarus then glided to Sam to watch from his perch. "Thanks for switching. Garrus seems to have a very headstrong mind, and I don't want to stifle him all the time. We can watch and jump in if need be, right?" Sam was worried about her Pokemon, but that's what made her a good trainer, right? "Try that strong arm attack you've been using!" She suggested. Garrus nodded and prepared his arm for a Hammer Arm.

Pidgey was stunned at the speed Icarus managed to achieve in the last round since most Pokemon in encountered in New Bark Town were pretty slow. The bird was at a loss pondering how in the world the electric rodent could move so quickly. Pidgey had allowed it's attention to slip away from the battle as it tried to explain to itself the logic of the situation it found itself in. As Samantha switched Pokemon Pidgey finally started to pay attention as this Pokemon looked to be far slower than the first one and Pidgey hoped that meant an easier battle. Not wanting to take it's chances however Pidgey kicked up a cloud of dirt using it's claws sending sand right into Garrus's eyes lowering his ability to see. As the bird egan to relax it heard Samantha's order and Pidgey's heart nearly skipped a beat as Hammer Arm was an attack almost no Pokemon it's age knew the attack but it had seen the move in action when both of it's parents were nearly killed by a renegade Darmanitan who used the exact same move. Fearing for it's life the bird grabed hold of more sand kicking it up into the sloth's face. Despite having poor vision after being hit twice with Sand Attack Garrus was not going to be deterred. He lifted up one of his arms and made a giant fist as he approached the bird. Pidgey was frozen in terror and made no attempt to avoid the attack as the fist came flying into it's face. Usually the attack would have slowed down Garrus even more but in this case Pidgey was knocked out cold and as such he managed to maintain his usual speed. Now it was up to Samantha if she wanted to capture the knocked out Pidgey or leave it for the hungry Rattata to feed on. Wild Pokemon Battle

Icarus was definitely quicker than the bird, and that was probably quite a shock for the poor creature. Birds prided themselves on their preened feathers, nests, and of course, their advantage on speed and height with their wings. Icarus was a baffling glider indeed, for he could do almost all those things, and could zap the bird out of the sky at any moment. Thankfully, Garrus wanted a go. Thankful in the sense that there was no electricity, not so thankful in the sense that Pidgey was about to become a pancake. Pidgey was underestimating Garrus, and that would be the bird's downfall. "You can do it, Garrus!" Sam called out, trying to give her Pokemon a bit of a sleepy ego boost. Garrus heard, and simply nodded his head slowly.
The Pidgey played a bit more defensively, instead of attacking. It scattered some dirt with it's claws and show it towards Icarus. As her sloth prepared it's attack, Pidgey seemed to freak out once more and scattered even more dirt towards Garrus. Gritting her teeth, Sam watched nervously. "Is Garrus gonna be able to hit it?" She asked Icarus, watching as Garrus approached. She didn't know the Pokemon could walk on it's back two legs, but he did and he was readying his fist. As strong as it was, it was still adorable too. Pidgey couldn't flee, even with Slakoth's accuracy, and it was quickly knocked out from the strength of Icarus's attack. Even Icarus seemed impressed as Garrus knocked half the life out of the bird with a single hit. "Pff. Even I did that. That's pretty impressive." Icarus snorted. Sam scratched his head, oblivious to the words Icarus was speaking. She'd understand one day, when she got better.
"Good job, Garrus! And Icarus! You guys did awesome!" Picking up the lazy sloth, Sam whirled him around a few spins before hugging him. Garrus returned the hug, albeit lazily. "You're getting stronger and stronger. Guess I won't be babying you much longer, eh?" She smiled, scratching the sloth under his chin. The Pidgey was left there as Sam walked away, although she did feel bad. "Lemme hide it at least." She murmured, dragging the bird under a bush to hide it from hungry, prying eyes. "Two trainers and our first Pokemon battle with a wild mon. We're doing pretty well!" Sam smiled, walking with both her Pokemon down the route. Her phone buzzed in her pocket, so she pulled it out of her pocket and pressed it to her ear to hear the call. "Huh? What? You have a surprise for me? Awesome! Yeah... sounds great. I'll definitely be there!" She hung up after her mother hung up, and she grinned from ear to ear. "Looks like we'll be getting a new friend or two! Mom said she'll meet me soon."

Route 29- - - - - - - - - - - - Crouched within a convenient set of bushes, two pairs of eyes watched Sam as she walked by chatting on her phone. "You hear that Adonis? I think we should tag along with her. Maybe we can beg for a friend for you!" a young boy whispered, sharing a conspiratorial grin with his Rattata. Backing out of the bush, both of them kept a low profile until they could cut in front of Sam, the boy throwing out his arms. "Wait!" he said loudly, hoping to startle her into stopping. His Rattata circled round his feet, its glossy purple fur almost shining in the sunlight. Clearly it was well cared for despite being one of the most common, abundant Pokémon out there.
Adopting a bit of a swagger, the young kid shoved his hands into the pockets of his shorts and leaned forwards slightly. "I couldn't help but overhear you're getting a couple Pokémon. I've been trying to catch a friend for my amazing Rattata Adonis, but they always seem to get away," he said, changing his grin into a pout. "So, when I heard you talking back there, I figured... hey, why not tag along? I'm sure someone as strong as you wouldn't mind sparing one for me. Or if that's not cool, you could help me catch one?" the boy amended hastily, looking a bit sheepish. He didn't want to give the impression he was trying to swipe Pokémon from her.
Adonis squeaked from by his feet, red eyes fixed curiously on Garrus and Icarus. "Oh, right, my name is Joey! Ehehe, I forgot my manners," Joey laughed nervously. "There's a really cool Pokémon I've been trying to get in particular, but my bad luck is getting me down. So uh, even if you don't want to give me one, help would be really nice," he finished, gaze hopeful. Begging for a free Pokémon seemed wrong, so perhaps she would be kind enough to aid him in his quest to make Adonis less lonely.

Almost as if on cue, Sam could hear wingbeats and her mother's voice calling down to her. About the same time she started walking forward to meet her, the boy came out from the tall grass to speak to her. Not sure which one to listen to first, Sam's mother approached and decided it for her. Slipping off the back of her Pidgeot, her mother smiled and waved at her daughter, as well as the new trainer. "Oh, well howdy there! How's your journey going Sam? Who is your new friend here? Are ya'll hitting the route together?" The flood of questions was a bit much, but Sam slowly addressed them. "Journey's going good! The egg you gave me hatched into a Slakoth. It's way too cute, mom. This is, uh, a trainer that just approached me. I'm not sure if he wants to battle or not. Nah, I travel alone. You know how awkward I am."Turning to listen to the boy, Sam smiled slightly when he mentioned wanting a friend for his Rattata. Well hell no she wouldn't give him one, but she definitely wouldn't mind helping him out. Well, she wouldn't mind as long as her mom was here. Had she not shown up, she probably would've awkwardly wiggled her way out of it. Too many people around on her first day as a trainer... it was agony. "Okay. Yeah, sure! I can help you get a friend for your Rattata. Okay mom, this kid is Joey." "Oh I heard. I'm right here, dear. I got those Pokemon I was telling you about. Guess that musta got your friend's attention here." While her mom dug into a messenger bag to pick out a few pokeballs, Icarus glided over to land and scurry around her mother. "We found this little guy in our barn. Terrified, no doubt. All the big Pokemon scared it, poor thing. It liked to hang upside down, and it's a bit of a spitfire, but I think you'll enjoy it. I think it's a she, but I can't be too sure." When her mother released the pokeball, a Noibat came out, flapping it's wings rapidly to keep afloat. Okay, yeah, it was adorable. "Mom she's so cute! Look at her ears!" Sam stepped forward to examine the bat, which shied away at first until Sam stroked it's ears softly. Taking an immediate liking to the trainer, the Noibat sat on Sam's shoulder, taking Icarus's spot in a cheeky fashion. Sam's mom handed her the next ball. "It's a Rhyhorn we found out off on the shores of Olivine. We're thinking it was probably abandoned there. It's not too friendly, so it'll take some time to warm up to you. But, I think you can do it!" Sam's mom smiled at both of them. "Now Joey. No matter what Sam says, make sure she helps you get that Pokemon. She's a little anti-social, and prefers to be alone, but she'll survive helping you get your Pokemon, okay?" "Mom..." Sam groaned, but stepped forward to hug her mother anyway. "Thank you for the Pokemon! I'll take good care of them, and i'll help this kid get a friend for his Rattata." She promised, before waving to her mother as she flew off. Finally, Sam turned to Joey. "So what Pokemon did you have in mind? My team and I can definitely help you out." She reassured him.

Joey seemed taken aback to be getting more than he expected when the girl's mother appeared on the back of a regal-looking Pidgeot. Adonis, contrary to his species' usual reaction to large predatory birds, looked up at Pidgeot with unabashed curiosity and a desire to try out his strength against it. Meanwhile Joey watched with unchecked envy as Sam's mother passed over the two Pokémon, though some of that envy vanished in place of awe as the Noibat appeared. "Whooooooa! I've never seen that Pokémon before. You're so lucky!" he exclaimed to Sam, grinning wildly. Part of him was jealous she could have such a cool Pokémon and he couldn't but as she conversed with her mother and agreed to help him, he cheered up immensely. "Oh, thanks! I've asked a few other people but all they wanted to do was battle or brush me off," Joey replied to Sam's mother, mock pouting for her benefit. Even though Sam was hesitant, he was just too dang grateful she was going to help him out to be bothered about it. "Oh, you'll understand why I want it when you see it. It's so funky looking," he answered, waving as her mother flew off. Joey was all smiles now, and he pointed towards a tree a short walk from where they stood. It stood tall and proud over the route, heavily burdened with a multitude of branches and Pokémon that flitted about on them. With Adonis trotting along beside him, Joey led the pair over to the tree and squinted as he peered up into the branches, shouting when he spotted it. "See! Right there, that blue bug!"It was an unusual looking Caterpie, a pale blue with orange markings and yellow antennae, and it was slowly inching across a branch several feet off the ground. "Last time I tried to capture it, something grabbed it in the middle of our battle," he explained, arms crossed as Joey pondered how to best get its attention. He looked down at Adonis and snapped his fingers, another wild grin clearing the frown off his face. "Adonis, how about you get it down?" Joey asked, knowing his Rattata was just the rodent for the job. Adonis was a top percentage Rattata, and if he couldn't do this, no one can. "Ta, raa taa!" Adonis squeaked, scrambling up the rough bark of the tree, his claws finding easy purchase on it to propel him up with frightening speed. Once on the same branch as the blue Caterpie, Adonis dashed over to it and wasted little time, giving it a harsh shove that sent it flailing off the branch. "I gotcha, I gotcha!" Joey called, easily catching Caterpie as it tumbled down to him. Holding it carefully, the boy laughed in excitement, only to splutter as the caterpillar angrily sprayed him with a String Shot, making him drop it with a muffled yell. Adonis was there in an instant, his front teeth carving through the silk with ease. "Blah! Thanks buddy. Now, Caterpie, I'm here to-- huh?" Joey began, looking up once more. Something else detached itself from the upper branches of the tree, a Butterfree descending rapidly before it pulled up behind the Caterpie, making clearly furious noises at both Joey and Sam. "Uh oh. I think that's the bug's mama. Ulp, I guess I made it mad... um, any chance you can help me fight them off?" Joey asked with a nervous laugh. Adonis was more than willing to battle, but two on one hardly seemed fair, with Caterpie looking deeply offended at having been disturbed.

The youngster was probably put off slightly from the arrival of the new Noibat, but it couldn't really be helped. Sam wasn't about to ignore her mother. Yeah sure, she was going to help him and all, but lines had to be drawn. As her mother's Pidgeot disappeared into the sky, Sam turned back to Joey and Adonis. The Noibat, named Joka, sat watching as Joey complimented it. Furrowing it's wings, Noibat seemed to be happy with the compliment. "I haven't either! I'm surprised it was in the barn. I keep the doors closed all the time. I guess since I left home, my family's getting used to me not being there to do the little things in the morning." That was the only thing that made sense. Either that, or someone had just abandoned it close by. That thought made her heart hurt, but thankfully that probably wasn't the case as Joka was warming up quite nicely.
"Icarus, C'mon. Let's go see that Pokemon, shall we?" Sam mused, returning Garrus to his Pokeball. Icarus sized up the Noibat on Sam's shoulder before snorting angrily and crawling onto Sam's other shoulder. A power struggle seemed to be on the rise, but Joka sat, practically unknowing to the entire situation. Odd... "Funky looking? I'm pretty intrigued." What kind of Funky looking Pokemon would be on the road in New Bark Town? Nothing interesting happened here. That's practically why she chose to start here! (Not that she had much of a choice, but anyways...) When the boy pointed out the Shiny Caterpie, Sam's jaw dropped. "You weren't kidding! Look at the colors!" Sam gasped, watching him try and get the Pokemon down. It wasn't the 'technical' way to get a Pokemon, but it seemed practical enough...
Once Joey caught the bug, it sputtered silk into his face. Supressing a laugh, Sam watched as yet another contender entered the battle. A Butterfree? She remembered seeing a few around where she lived, but never really up close. It seemed very protective of the baby. "I think you're right on the money. I bet that's the mom. No wonder you've been having issues capturing it." Not too keen on helping the boy rip the child away from the mother, Sam weighed her options before deciding not to back out on her word. "I'll take care of the mom, you focus on your Pokemon, okay?" She said, before pointing at Butterfree. "Joka, you wanna give this a go? Try for an Acrobatics." Sam made sure Joka wasn't holding anything so she didn't have anything to drop during her aerial maneuvers.

When phrased that way, Joey did notice how protective the mama was being, keeping the odd Caterpie behind her while trilling at them in an angry tone. He hadn't quite grasped why the Butterfree was so upset yet, but for now he had a battle to see to, with Adonis waiting for his orders. "Thanks! We learned at school that Pokémon ought to be weakened first, so I guess I'll have to be careful with Caterpie," the boy replied, grinning as he realized who Sam had sent out. "With your bat friend fighting, mama doesn't stand a chance!" Adonis added his agreement, feeling quite relieved knowing he wasn't in this alone. With their choices made, it was time for this battle to kick into gear, and Butterfree made an unhappy noise as Caterpie inched forwards.
She didn't want her offspring to be hurt with these ruffian humans, but she had felt similar to Adonis at potentially being subject to a two-on-one offense. It seemed as though her anger and anxiety made mama Butterfree tense all over, but as a metallic sheen rippled over her body, it became clear that she had simply performed a move first. Hardening her carapace to withstand any blows that came her way was a stroke of brilliance, as Joka propelled herself off of Sam's shoulder and swooped into battle like a fuzzy purple comet. Her movements were graceful and precise as the Noibat whirled round Butterfree, landing a strong blow when the bug was sufficiently distracted and fluttering quickly back to Sam's side.
"Wow! She's so strong and fast! Adonis, don't let her show you up now. How about a Tail Whip to start?" Joey gushed, turning to his partner with a grin that almost seemed permanently etched on his face. Disgruntled at not being able to properly attack, Adonis turned round and waggled his tail rather cutely, the display easing Butterfree's anger and Caterpie's wariness enough to let their guards down. Caterpie wasn't entirely ready to shrug off the danger posed to it, however, and repeated the same attack it had used on Joey. This time the stream of silk it fired out split into two threads that wrapped themselves round both Adonis and Joka, hampering their speed for the next round. "At least it's not at my face again," Joey commented with a faint laugh.
