"The air was red, and so were my eyes."
He was talking to Brother, the snowboarding pikachu.
"We were at the caves, right? And then - and then we weren't. The wall just kind of... disappeared, with that final blast, and suddenly we were outside. Or no - we were under cover, but now we could see the sky."
"Pikachu..."
"Yeah, so. You want to hear the story or not? Say, 'yeah, dude...'"
"Ka - chu..."
"I guess that's my cue. Hang on... Can you light me? Yeah, just... let me use that red dot on your cheek. OW! Shit, Jesus. I was just kidding. That really stings, Bro."

"I'm no good at storytelling," he said, this time to the bulbasaur and pikachu pair. "It went like this - I finally arrive in this town, in this country, and like all charter ships mine dumped me in front of the lab. That's when I realized: I've never owned a pokémon before. I've never actually had my own pokémon. I worked with a bunch, and I used to chase mankeys out of the market with a stick, but I'd never... you know. So I walked into the lab.
"There was an assistant there, and she had the reddest hair known to mankind. You think my hair is red? This woman was on fire. I digress. Told you I'm no good at this. The professor met me, after that. He was - solid, upright, a little distracted I guess. I thought he would make me feel like a creep for being six years behind the times but he didn't at all. He thought it was okay that I'm starting off old. He talked to me a couple minutes about Kanto, about home; I didn't tell him anything. He led me to the back where you, the charmander, and the squirtle were all sitting waiting for me like three wide-eyed creepers."
The bulbasaur nibbled on some grass, and his vines were poking around from either side of his bulb like long green tentacles. He looked up at Abbie briefly, murmured, and then went back to eating grass.
"You were there, with your big green face and that smelly bulb on your back. The fire one was all roaring and hissing, trying to get my attention. I didn't really look at the water one. You were staring at me with your giant green face and your big blue eyes and you looked kind of bored, like you do now. I told the professor I wanted you. I told him, 'I choose Blobasaur.' That's you."
They walked for a little while, after that: Abbie Hoffman, the pikachu with his snowboard, and the wide-faced green bulbasaur. There were small ledges all over the path, which Abbie might have been able to climb, but which the pikachu and the bulbasaur were too small to navigate. Walking across the route was tantalizingly slow. The grass came sporadically, but in giant bursts: suddenly all three of them trudged through a forest of grass, and Abbie had to listen for the pokémon's rustling tails to know they were still behind him. "Let's get out of this grass," Abbie called, over his cigarette. "I think there's a lake over there." He pointed west: the sun was already on its way down.
