After watching Video Case 11-1, explain the concepts of personal and situational interest. How do these concepts relate to the school store project depicted in this video? Is working in the school store an extrinsic or an intrinsic motivator? Explain your answer. The difference between personal and situational interest is a relatively simple one. Personal interests refer to the intrinsic desires to understand something. This is a desire that is going to last over long periods of time and is derived from a combination of their pre-existing knowledge, emotions, and personal experiences. Situational interests are more situational, in that they will change and develop over time and will come and go as time passes and situations change. This can be compared to when one's favorite sports team enters a play-off series, or when one invests in a business for a period of time.
The school store project reflects situational interests due to the nature of the assignment. Thinking of it in terms of someone picking up a job or taking on a temporary responsibility, someone is only going to be invested in their job or career field for as long as they are actively employed within it. After leaving that job, the former workers will rarely have any further investment in their former workplaces. Something similar will be observed in these students when their time with the school store is done, as they did not possess an intrinsic desire to understand or work in it, the teacher will likely observe their overall interest in the project start to fade away with time.
However, despite this the act of working in the school store can serve as an intrinsic motivator. The majority of the students working in it seem to be doing so in order to get a better grasp of how to manage money and engage in mathematics, rather than in order to get paid or doing so directly for a grade. The purpose of working this job in the school store was to develop engagement with the lesson and learn more, not to earn discounts or receive a paycheck.
After watching Video Case 12-1, describe Ms. Moylan's classroom-management style as either authoritarian, permissive, or authoritative. Provide specific examples from the video to support your answer. Tell what elements of the well-managed classroom are depicted in the video. Ms. Moylan's classroom-management style skews towards the authoritative. Authoritarian management styles rely on the teacher being the sole motivator, director, and facilitator of the class and its activities with little room for freedom, which goes against what she is doing; similarly, a permissive style gives more control and influence directly to the students in a way that she seems to not be doing. She opens up the class by allowing the students to greet one another in their own personalized ways and invites them to talk about their feelings and push out whatever negative thoughts they may be bringing with them. However, at the same time she is still the main guide through their lesson as they read the book and talk about the scenario that she put forth for them involving the kids not wanting to get into the water right away. Due to her taking on this guiding role while also giving them room to discuss their feelings and their own interpretations, her classroom-management leans more into this authoritative style of management.
Elements of the well-managed classroom that we see in Ms. Moylan's class are that she has set clear expectations for how she expects her class to act and engage with the classroom lessons, while also taking the time to build relationships with them. She is aware enough about the emotional and mental situations of her class that she knows to tell them to try and cast off whatever negative thoughts may be weighing them down at the start of the lesson, and it is clear to me that her students seem to trust her a great deal in talking with her about these things. Her instructional techniques are also very purposeful, encouraging students to communicate with and take a level of personal involvement with the lesson being presented to them.
After watching Video Case 13-1, explain how this video illustrates Vygotsky's theory of cognitive growth through collaboration. Do you think the teacher's ad hoc learning groups are as effective as cooperative learning groups that are thoroughly planned in advance? Please explain your answer. In the video lesson, the class is being asked to work in groups to define what it means to be a human. The groups were put together on the spot and were not planned for, however. Vygotsky's theory states that cognitive development can be influenced by one's social interactions, and that learning as a process relies totally on one's ability to socialize and work with others. Vygotsky was cited as once claiming that collaboration is the most effective way to promote cognitive development due to students modeling more advanced models of education for one another than they might use when learning on their own. I believe that the best way to introduce learning groups into the classroom is to keep groups changing, forming them ad hoc as needed. I believe that this is the ideal way due to it expanding the possible combinations for students to work in, allowing them to expose themselves to multiple ways of thinking. By exposing kids to mutliple forms of thinking, we are showing them different ways to solve certain problems and think things through, allowing them the chance to become more rounded as individuals.
Explain in detail how and why you would use Bloom’s taxonomies in the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains to help you create lesson plans and classroom evaluations/tests.

Each creature in a 15-foot cone originating from the flumph must succeed on a DC 10 Dexterity saving throw or be coated in a foul-smelling liquid. A coated creature exudes a horrible stench for 1d4 hours. The coated creature is poisoned as long as the stench lasts, and other creatures are poisoned while with in 5 feet of the coated creature. A creature can remove the stench on itself by using a short rest to bathe in water, alcohol, or vinegar.
