It was just awful in Cherrygrove.
Wait, what? Cherrygrove? What was she doing here? Well, after some recent rather strange sequence of events, Grace ended up back in the lovely town of Cherrygrove. This was a miracle in itself because she was starting to think she would never find her way out of the wilderness. But they finally backtracked correctly and found themselves on Route 29 once more. She had stared intently down the path that wound itself towards New Bark Town, and after long moment of silence, she turned around and went the opposite direction. This was probably one of the most influential decisions she has had to make, and Grace took every step afterward with a heavy sense of anticipation, her eyes holding a thousand mile stare. It was dark by the time they got to the city limits.
Why was it awful, you might ask? Well, first, it was cold. It was so cold. Grace hated the cold. She was a summer’s girl. The air was bitter to her nose and ears, and the brunette had to scramble to cover herself with a warm jacket, wrap a scarf around her neck, and fit a beanie over her head and ears. And second, it was hailing. Hailing. She had never had to deal with hail before. At first, naive girl thought it was snow, but upon closer inspection, and a few prickly pellets pelting her face, Grace realized that these were a lot harder than snowflakes. So this was great.
Head ducked and arms shielding her face and eyes, Grace made haste to find shelter. The city was a lot more quiet this time around, for good reason. Both Terry and Baylor were returned to their respective Pokeballs, so Grace power walked along the sidewalk alone, straining to remember how to get to the Pokemon Center. In the midst of the dark and colorlessness that the weather created, the warm lights emitting from the huge Center was a beacon. Grace quickly slipped through the doors, stopping just inside to shake off the hail from her beanie and jacket. The girl handed over her Pokeballs to the nurse and made a beeline to the couches. Sinking into the cushions, Grace curled up, tucking her icy hands under her neck. She didn’t hear Nurse Joy call out that her Pokemon were ready.
---
Grace woke up groggy and sore. Someone walking in would find a girl with messy hair sitting comfortably on the couch, sipping on her hot chocolate as she flipped through pages of a magazine found on the coffee table. She would occasionally look up and out the window into the grey sky and make a face. Grace was not feeling up for this, if she were to be completely honest. She was clothed appropriately in a sweater and a pair of sweatpants, but the thought of going out again so soon made her wish for her bed. So she took the day off. Nurse Joy granted her a room to lodge in. To past time, Grace found various books, beginner manuals, and magazines around the Center and tucked herself under the covers to read. To break fast, she indulged in snack items from the vending machines. The best part was to be able to lay down on a bed, stretch out, and let sleep take her. It was a good day.
---
The following day didn’t seem to get any better with regards to the weather. However, Grace was feeling much more refreshed. Tightening the scarf around her neck, she thanked the kind Nurse, breathed a deep breath, and ventured outside.

The poor weather was an inconvenience for not only Grace but for the Pokemon and trainers in the area as well. None of the Pokemon that lived on the route were designed to last long in Hail. Even the Pokemon with wings did not have the strength to fly to somewhere warmer until the weather cleared up. There was no end in sight to the bad weather either as father winter had marked Cherrygrove as his new summer home. Those who lived in the town were forced to put up with the bad weather any way they could even if it meant living side by side with humans. For most wild Pokemon the idea of relying on humans for help was unacceptable but those living in Cherrygrove had no choice. It was not long after Grace left the Pokemon Center before she ran into one of the Pokemon needed to rely on humans for help. A wild Tailow was walking through the streets with wings covered in ice from the hail going door to door hoping someone would let it spend some time indoors to warm up and escape the brutal weather for a while but all of the houses it visited refused to even open their doors to the poor Pokemon. It was then that the Taillow took notice of Grace in the storm and it decided to try begging her for some help as it was desperate at this point. There was not much else it could do at this point and it was going to get her help one way or the other. The Tailow hopped towards her with a pair of sad eyes. Its stomach rumbled as it looked for crumbs on the ground as it approached her. The bird could smell that she had Pokemon with her and it did not like the idea of a human owning them one bit. Since she did not have any food in her hand as it approached Taillow began to turn violent towards her. Instead of acting like a helpless creature it began to chirp before it tried to peck at her trying to get a meal. This bird was not going to give up without a fight and it was up to Grace which Pokemon she would use to fend it off. A wild level 9 Taillow challenges you to a battle. Please select a Pokemon. Hail will be in effect for this battle.

Why on earth was she out and about on a day like this? The hailstorm definitely did not ease off after her break day like she hoped it would. So here she was, braving the biting weather to find her way out of the city and onwards. A dust of hail pelted her face, and Grace nearly decided then and there to turn around and just lock herself indoors until the weather blows over. For this girl, this was not the ideal condition to have an adventure in. Grace exaggerated a shiver, and not because of the cold. She dearly hoped that this wasn’t the usual in this Johto place. That would suck.
Everything was ice gray and blurry, from the buildings to the poor living plants and trees. She saw few people while she shuffled along the sidewalk while huddling closer to the buildings. At least those people have a good sense to stay inside… unlike a certain someone. A few minutes after she was starting to lose feeling in her fingers, Grace resolved that she would find a kindly resident who would be willing to let her duck inside for a moment, at least until she was sure she wasn’t getting frostbite within the next couple of minutes. Walking stiffly up to a door, she was about to knock when she noticed a curious thing. A dark speck was hopping on the ground, and it coming towards her.
Raising an eyebrow questioningly, she squinted into the flurry. The thing was definitely coming closer her way. It was a small bird, shuffling along the pavement, which was strange for a flying creature but maybe not in this horrid weather. It probably looked as miserable as she was. She stood there as the Pokemon got closer and closer. She thought it seemed to pause for a moment as it observed her. All of a sudden, it let out a cry and flung itself at her. Grace yelped as the bird proceeded to peck her.
She swung her backpack around in self-defense. ”What did I do?” Swatting at the avian wasn’t helping as much, since it was looking like it had a personal beef with her, so she had to enlist some help. She called out her Blitzle, who appeared in front of her. She was obviously going crazy, but Grace figured that if this little adventure was going to be a long term deal, then she might as well sharpen up all her little Pokemon, starting with the wild one. And plus, that’s what all the guides say. Those guides looked legit. She even snagged one to keep.
”Alright, Barco, I’d love your help with this. And while we’re at it, we can do this thing that they call training. I think this is how it goes. So just bear with me,” she said to her equestrian Pokemon. ”I think it’s not gonna be too bad! And in the end, we’ll be so bonded, it’ll be great!” Grace took out her Pokedex to find her Blitzle’s entry. ”Okay, give it your best Shock Wave!” she called, motioning at the wild Taillow.
Barco reared up and neighed as he pounded his hooves on the pavement. Snorting gruffly, he fixed his opponent a glare. He could feel the electricity charge in his mane and focused them on the Taillow.

Well, technically nobody really liked hailing weather, except for the ones who still have to continue their day despite all kinds of weather. Walking alone to see what Cherrygrove City have to offer, Grace found herself being chased by a hopping Taillow, who seemed to have a bone to pick with her. Then, when the bird got close, the human was swinging her backpack at her! How brave to attack a Pokemon by herself! The little bird squawked and hopped helplessly as the backpack nearly hit it twice. Then, deciding that she would still need her Pokemon's help, she sent out a Blitzle. The Taillow paused for a second to examine the Blitzle. A white and black steed.... hoofed creature, with an obvious symbolic lightning shape on his head. The Taillow shook its head for a second before growling loudly, complaining to the human and the Blitzle that this wasn't nice. Though unfortunately, Grace likely don't speak Pokemon. Feeling competitive, Barco tried to ignore the growl that happened just now. Charging up electricity on his horn before sending it toward the opponent, the Blitzle was ready to show the Taillow his competitive size, that a simple growl won't affect his attitude. The electric type charged, and then lowered his head and sent the electricity downward, that even the hopping Taillow could not dodge this accurate move. The Taillow cawed, feeling painful from the attack, but not enough to make the bird give up. Barco would need more jolts to make the Taillow calm down.

Barco shook his head violently, freeing the bits of hail that were stuck in his pelt. The Taillow seemed to still be okay after that charge, which made him angry. He wanted to trampled over that little bird, break a few bones or two. But he could do this all day. To show it, the Blitzle clapped his hooves on the pavement threateningly. His rear legs kicked in anticipating, and he swung his head around to glare at Grace impatiently. Barco was begrudgingly willing to allow his new, childish owner to call the shots, but if she wasn’t going to get her head in the game soon, he would leave her behind.
Grace flinched nervously when her Pokemon seemed to turn his rage on her. This was probably much scarier than the crazy light show that was happening before her eyes. ”Uh okay okay! Well you’re still trying to get that guy,” she stammered, pointing at Taillow. Barco neighed his displeasure. ”So uh how about another Shock Wave?” The four-legged creature didn’t hesitate. In a flash, he was rushing forward, head lowered and static charging dangerous blue in his mane.

The frozen Taillow snapped back at the Blitzle, the two wild Pokemon sharing one similarity and that being rage. Barco was prepared to battle but he was waiting for continuous orders that trainers were supposed to give. Yet Grace was still new to all this battling malarkey herself. Having almost been physically assaulted by this Taillow, it would've been no surprise for her to still be somewhat startled but even a pecking bird wasn't as fearsome looking as the glares Barco was able to deal out. His fine pelt flickering with sparks of electricity, the black and white steed wanted nothing more than to strike his hooves across the body of the Taillow and simply get this hail battle out of the way. Luckily for him, Grace gained some sense, as she managed to stammer another order.
The lightning bolt shaped maned which stood proudly on Barco's head began to glow a bright blue but the wild bird had used Grace's uncertainty to it's advantage. Focusing the energy it had, the small avian planned to use it's speed to land a critical hit at some point and with a scrutinising stare, tried to find the weakness of the electrical equestrian. Barco, on the other hand, wasn't one to simply allow his weaknesses to be found. Other than being young and wild, the Blitzle didn't have much battling experience but it was eager to dive in head first and this battle proved his prowess. With a flick of his head, the Blitzle sent forth a blade of electricity which tore through the falling hail and struck the body of the Taillow cleanly in the chest.
Feeling it's entire body shake uncontrollably, the blue bird felt a bit of smoke rise from it's singed feathers. Uncertain as to whether it could take another electrical blow, the Taillow had two options. Either flee or somehow turn this battle around to it's own favour. Only, Barco wasn't it's only foe and the hail overhead relentlessly struck everything in it's falling path.

Despite the fact that she felt like her face was frozen over, Grace broke out a smile and cheered on her Pokemon encouragingly. Truth be told, Barco was intimidating the heck out of her, and she was trying her best to keep herself from being on the wrong end of those lightning charges. So she decided she was going to be super supportive of his endeavors, and that be frying the poor Taillow to a crisp, then so be it. ”Hey look at us! We’re pretty good at this!” she called through the hailstorm blowing around them. Her voice was muffled by the scarf she pulled around her face. Oh she hoped they wouldn’t have to stay out here for long. She was surprised the bird was still up. Maybe this was the perfect chance!
Her Blitzle was also eager to wrap up the battle. The pelting hail was starting to irritate his body, and Barco whinnied and kicked in annoyance at the constant pricking. He had never seen conditions such as these, and while the spirit inside him would push through regardless, he was not sure he enjoyed these solid raindrops. The equestrian peered through the sheets of hail, making sure his eyes didn’t leave his enemy. Taillow better not make a run for it. If he wasn’t careful, that small, speedy Pokemon could try to slip away. If only the girl would hurry up…
”Okay, so they said that we want to catch a lot of Pokemon. What about this little guy?” Grace was saying, giving Taillow a good look as she contemplated her choices. ”He kinda reminds me of Archer, doesn’t he? I bet they can be friends! Probably teach him some manners too...” Feeling quite the informed consumer after doing her research, Grace was on another level of confidence. Clumsily fishing out a Pokeball with her numb fingers, she called out to her Pokemon. ”Great work, Barco! You’re awesome for helping me out!” The girl launched the empty sphere forward in the direction of the avian.

Gaining a bit more confidence after participating in a battle against this wild Taillow, Grace thought one step ahead and considered capturing the red chested avian rather than forcing it to faint. Finding some kind of familiarity with the bird, considering she already had a feathered friend on her team, as a Pokemon trainer capturing most Pokemon was simply what they did. As she rummaged around for a spare Pokeball, the practically frozen and weakened Taillow shuddered on it's perch. The previous attack from Barco had well and truly knocked the wind right out of it and despite merely wanting food, there was nothing stopping the avian from spreading it's wings and fleeing to safety. Well, nothing other than a sneaky shock attack from Barco or the many hail stones finishing it off.
Not having many options at all, the Taillow breathed heavily from it's beak but soon noticed a red object apparent in the hands of Grace. What was that? Was that food? Eyes almost beginning to sparkle, the Taillow saw this as a ray of hope. Had she finally realised that all the Taillow was, was a little peckish and wanted some food? It's faith being put back in humans, not that it had any to begin with, the bird eagerly began approaching Grace herself, ready to accept her gracious gift. Blinded by the idea of filling it's belly, the bird flew head first at the tossed Pokeball, flinching as the object tapped against it's body before sucking it inside with a flash of light.

As soon as the Pokeball ceased its twitching, Grace gingerly shuffled forward, carefully walking past her Blitzle, to fetch the now-filled sphere. The ice cold surface shocked her, and she almost dropped it as a result, but Grace managed to hold it close, staring at it in wonder. This neat contraption and this entire concept would never fail to amaze her. The girl tucked it clumsily into her backpack to keep it warm, but she was aware that it wouldn’t be there when she opened it back up. Grace was feeling optimistic about this one. She could’ve been seeing things, but she was pretty positive that it looked like the Taillow had almost wanted to be captured. Well that was half the battle wasn’t it?
Rubbing her hands together rapidly to generate some much needed heat, she turned back to Barco. The striped creature was observing her with quite the glare. Grace gave him a short praise, to which he snorted gruffly. He pawed the ground impatiently, jerking his head at her pack. His trainer hastened to retrieve his Pokeball and send him back in. All by her lonesome once more, Grace continued to fight the hail as she made her way down the street, head ducked and scarf pulled tight. Her pace quickened when she was starting to recognize some of the landmarks, and soon, the brunette found herself on the outskirts of town leading to Route 30. This was a risky move, venturing out of the safety of the city in this horrid weather. But the scrimmage had perked up her spirits a bit, and Grace was eager to push on. She cast one last glance into Cherrygrove, squared herself up, and marched forward into the wilderness.

As Grace made her way onto route 30 a strange noise coming from up ahead stopped her in her tracks. It was unlike anything she had ever heard. It was not long before a Quagsire appeared in front of her with it's arms full of a few items that it had been carrying looking for what it believed to be a worthy trainer to give as a gift. Upon seeing her the protected Pokemon held out it's arms showing her the items it had in it's possession as it it were willing to give her the items to help Grace on her journey. The water type smiled as it's arms remained out waiting on her to take the items. Right after she secured the items Quagsire shook it's head in approval. With it's arms now empty the water type began to walk away. It no longer had to worry about finding the items a good home as it believed Grace would take good care of them. Being a protected species Grace was not able to even battle the Quagsire however the items it gave her would hopefully prove to be a worthy substitute for a battle. With the Quagsire slowly walking away from her knowing she could not legally do anything to it Grace was able to keep pushing forward. There would more than likely be more obstacles on the road ahead but this one at least bared gifts. A wild Quagsire offers you the following items to assist you on your journey: Rindo Berry x1 Nugget x1 Pearl x1

The going was quite tough, Grace had to admit. The chilling weather didn’t look like it was letting up anytime soon, to her dismay. She kept her head bowed and hands stuffed in the pockets of her purple coat. She was sort of regretting her moment of weakness before. To think that she was right here a few days ago, and she would have completely missed this heck of a winter storm. Grace wasn’t sure how far as actually went on the route earlier, and she had no clue how far out the next city was. All she had to go on was this seemingly endless stretch of wilderness and the billowing white and ice that filtered the scenery. Which was great. It was just great.
Though it was bitterly cold, Grace was pleasantly at ease by the lack of other living organisms in the near vicinity. Here she was, walking and minding her own business with no strange disturbances or cute little creatures coming up picking fights. It was relaxing, and the brunette could almost start skipping had her joints weren’t aching from the cold. An unfamiliar sound ahead alerted her to another being coming into proximity. The wintery white didn’t allow her to see very far, and she was starting to get another kind of chill. ”Uh oh…” Grace came to a slow stop, cautious of what might be waiting for her beyond the white veil. Images of a raging sheep flashed in her mind.
To her relief and surprise, the creature was anything but a fluffy, angry sheep. It was a rounded, light blue thing with a shiny body and huge hands. The Pokemon had a wide, goofy smile and dots for eyes. The thing had definitely saw her, and it looked like it was headed her way. Grace whipped out her Pokedex quickly, allowing the device to give the Pokemon a scan-over. This was a strange Pokemon with an even stranger name, Quagsire. ”Well, here we go again,” she said to herself, unaware of the protected status of this water Pokemon and preparing to summon her own. She had decided on Terry for this scrimmage and was just about to call him out when she paused. The Quagsire thing was waddling cutely up to her, and it looked completely unafraid to approach a human. Its arms were holding onto several items, and the glinting caught her attention. Once it practically got to her feet, it held out its possessions with a broad smile.
Not sure what to think of the situation, Grace could only manage to squat down and receive the creature’s gifts. ”Oh wow, uh, thank you, Mr. Quagsire,” she said in bewilderment. Content that she collected the items from it, the Pokemon proceeded to turn around and walk off. She watched for a second before shaking her head slightly and pocketing her spontaneous presents, two shiny round items and one berry, along with Terry’s Pokeball. Well that was a little weird, a little different from the usual encounter. She wouldn’t mind skipping out on a battle though. That was completely fine with her.

Whilst the Quagsire they had just met meant them no ill will and instead came to offer them its blessings in the form of the round shaped objects it possessed, that didn't mean other Pokemon on the route were quite as relaxed. Grace may not have known it but she had began exploring route 30 at a rather specific time of the year. It was swarming season for a particular type of Pokemon and in reality, the whole route was littered with these curious beings. Well camouflaged, it was very much the idea of hiding in plain sight amongst the vegetation and foliage of the route itself. There was one of these creatures in particular that had been in close proximity that it had witnessed everything that had happened during Grace's chance encounter with the Quagsire. Having seen the exchange, it had become infatuated, nay obsessed, over the glorious golden object it had seen and wanted nothing more than to claim it for its own. Remaining hidden and thinking up a plan to retrieve this delightful nugget for itself, the Pokemon decided a surprise ambush would be for the best. Not only would there be the chance of the human dropping the nugget in surprise but it may also get some retribution for all the times people had aimlessly walked about and stood on top of it and its kind's head. After all, it's camouflage may have meant it was little more than tall blades of grass to those not really examining their surroundings. Waiting not a moment longer, the Pokemon spat itself out of the ground with a flourish. Swirling about mid air before landing with a startling cry, the Pokemon made itself known. For those in the know, it was none other than an Oddish. Although, this one was definitely beside itself in its lust for that marvellous nugget Grace had received. Thankfully it appeared to be the only one of its kind so affixed by its presence so there were thankfully no chances of an Oddish uprising but it still meant Grace had a rather troubling pest to deal with. The Pokemon was aggressively swaying from side to side in order to indicate a battle for the nugget and there appeared to be no real chance of escape. In fact, unless the Pokemon was subdued, there was the reality it may not even leave her alone. Stomping one of its feet in a threatening although clearly not threatening manner given its diminutive size, the Oddish wanted the nugget. Or else. Encounter
An enraptured Oddish (Level 6) wants the nugget! Please select a Pokemon for battle.

A sudden movement caused the girl to reel back and let out a startled gasp. A plant sprung from the foliage and made a mad dash toward her. It was literally bristling. Caught off guard, Grace had backed up defensively, but upon closer inspection of the strange being, she found herself able to relax somewhat. The angry little thing was pretty small, and despite its aggression, it looked sort of comical bearing such a threatening expression. Grace stood watching the thing for a few moments as it got up in her business. Snapping the little stare down she was having with this creature, she reached for her Pokedex, very curious to what this threatening Pokemon could be. Surely it was a Pokemon, though its vegetation appearance made her wonder. Its picture flashed on the device, and Grace raised her eyebrows in bemusement.
“Alright, alright, Oddish,” she said as she shuffled through her pack. “I know the drill.” She held out a familiar Pokeball and summoned her Pokemon representative. Barco the Blitzle came thrashing out of the light. His small hooves pounded against the ground as the Blitzle made a furious circle around his trainer, coming to sliding stop in front of Oddish. Barco neighed fiercely. As much disdain as he had for his so-called trainer, he was just satisfied that she was giving him many opportunities to stretch his legs.
”You know what’s up! Let’s Flame Charge,” she said to her Pokemon confidently. She smiled a small proud smile to herself. Normally she would’ve needed to take out her Pokedex to get a refresher on her Pokemon’s moves, but she was beginning to get some of them down in her head. Barco stomped and in a flash, made a beeline for his opponent. His furious sprint suddenly burst into a streak of flame. Grace couldn’t help the soft gasp as she witnessed fire engulf her Blitzle and shot at the bothersome Oddish.

Immediately pleased with the acceptance of battle, Oddish ruffled it's head leaves and stomped it's feet once more before taking a step or two back to give the trainer and her choice of Pokemon a chance to gather themselves. Battle-hungry and ready for the fight, Oddish watched with florally baited breath as Grace sent out the challenger. The first knight defending the nugget in honor, perhaps? A mighty electric steed. Oddish recognized the electric streaks down the side flank of the Blitzle. Although Oddish wasn't aware of what Blitzle was capable of, the grass Pokemon had already written off the nugget as its. After all, Electricity didn't do much to grass. Oddish had this in the bag. If anything, it's own sheer determination and slight hubris would get it through this difficult battle. Trainer Pokemon were always stronger than wild Pokemon, but with the shiny nugget on the line, Oddish couldn't afford to falter or step down. After all, confidence was all that was needed to intimidate in the battles around here. Perhaps the same tactic would work on Blitzle? Preparing it's own attack, Oddish watched in slight horror as flames licked around the charging Blitzle. With increased speed, the wind fed the flames until the creature was a charging mass of fire and hoof. Unable to dodge out of the way, Oddish braced itself for impact. The sheer force of Barco slammed into Oddish and the flames licked at the grass Pokemon, causing it quite a bit of pain. Oddish let out a cry of pain before attempting to get back onto its feet from its back. After a few moments of struggle, Oddish stood and released a little snort before stumbling over to Barco, who was just now beginning to cool off. A little bite was all Oddish needed to cause a bit of damage and get a little bit back in return... It went without a hitch, although it seemed more of an annoyance to Barco rather than painful. Either way, the first round and concluded and Oddish still felt like it would be the victor. After all, it survived a fire attack from a strange electric Pokemon.
