The battle with Sewaddle felt like it had taken a literal epoch to finish. By the time Ray and Skull Kid could return to their Pokémon hunt, it almost seemed like Summer had passed them by and Autumn had arrived. The skies turned grey as clouds loomed overhead, though it didn’t look like they were threatening any rain. It was just a plain ol’ overcast afternoon, nothing special there. The Pokémon in the area seemed quite disheartened by this news, almost as if this had replaced some rather nice weather. But was it really that nice? Hadn’t it been cold and frosty when Sewaddle appeared? If one could avoid questioning the seasonal changes of Johto recently, one might notice a rather serene setting around them. Route 30 was rather picturesque, with Bug Pokémon living in harmony with the birds and sheep nearby. And the monkeys, we can’t forget those. Mankey, to be precise. The Fighting type wasn’t native to this environment, but a veritable swarm of them seemed to be plaguing it right now. As Ray and Skull Kid searched for a new Pokémon to battle, it wasn’t long before some action found them instead. A crowd of Bidoof burst out of a nearby bush, almost running straight into the twosome. They looked absolutely petrified, though it wasn’t quite clear what they were running from. This was soon to be answered, however. A lone fist punched out of the bush. A brown fist. Soon, the rest of the arm emerged, covered in white fur. If Ray kept his eyes on the bush as it seemed to mutate, he’d see it apparently grow a pig-like nose next. Then a full face. And shortly after, the rest of a Mankey’s body would pop out of the hedge. This Mankey seemed angry for some reason. It was probably quite unused to the ecosystem here, so it might just have been incredibly hungry and trying to find suitable food. Whatever the problem was, it wasn’t going to sit down and talk about its feelings with anyone, much less a stupid human. Humans were, after all, just hairless apes. What ugly creatures, thought the Mankey as it noticed Ray stood in front of it. What hideous monsters. Perhaps it was time for a purge. And on that note, the Mankey charged out at Ray unannounced. A wild Mankey (Level 9) is about to attack Ray! Will he fight or flee?

The simultaneous change of seasons had occurred to Ray, but having a childhood friend in a spirit named after a Creepypasta spin-off had taught him that nothing in the universe is consistent. Therefore, he simply passed it off as said universe simply getting bored and speeding up time for fun. Of course, Skull Kid would have thought differently on the matter if he was paying attention.
Anyway, the crowd of Bidoof caused Ray and Skull Kid to spin around and around waiting for a opening to fight one of the brown balls of fluff. However, the main attraction arrived shortly after in the form of a Mankey. While still a tad dizzy, Skull Kid managed to get in a proper fighting stance and nudged Ray with his tail to alert him of the battle about to begin. Ray quickly turned to face the Mankey and popped the collar of his jacket to look cooler.
"Let's do this, Skull Kid," Ray said, "Use Water Gun."

Not so easy pickings to attack a human when they have a minion. A Squirtle that didn't know any better. Diverging from its initial target of Ray, the Mankey screeched out and began to furiously swipe at Skull Kid, paws banging against the turtle's face and chest region. Being quite angry was a boon, and the monkey was able to get a solid 5 shots in before Skull Kid blasted it back with a well aimed Water Gun applied directly to the face. Dripping wet, Mankey tumbles over backwards a few times before scrambling back to its feet and charging again!

Ray glared at the Mankey for his barrage of Fury Swipes against his companion. While enraged at the primate for his savagery, he still respected how powerful his strikes were. This catch was going to be a powerful ally.
"Stay frosty, Skull Kid," Ray said, smirking mischievously, "This battle is about to get great."
With that, Ray threw a Great Ball straight at the Mankey. Crossing his fingers, he waited for the result.

The already irate Mankey grew even more enraged as it's body began drenched by a burst of water. Droplets dripping front the very tips of it's white mass of fur, steam practically raised from the wild Pokemon's body. It's strikes were swift, accurate and powerful, making it a worthy catch in the eye of Ray. Something as tough as a Mankey would prove to be an essential partner down the line, with heavy hits that would be able to keep most foes back. Now, all he had to do was somehow successfully capture the creature. He had only ordered one attack but he was trusting in the strength behind his own Squirtle, too. There was no doubt that Skull Kid's hit had knocked the angry ape down a peg or two and now was as good a time as any to give capture a go.
Pulling out a slightly stronger Pokeball, he prepared the Greatball in his hand before taking aim. With a toss, the capture device soared through the air, homing in on the fidgeting Mankey. Tapping against it's body and drawing the Pokemon inside via a flash of red light, the Greatball landed on the ground and began to shake from left to right...
WIGGLE. WIGGLE. WIGGLE. . . . TING!

Ray let out a "BABOOM" at the sight of the captured Mankey and did the SANS DANCE victoriously. After a few minutes, Skull Kid jumped high enough to reach Ray's face and gave him a taste of his backhand. "Thanks," Ray said, realizing how silly he looked, " I needed that. Come on, let's get to Cherrygrove and we can get some real rest." And with that, Ray and Skull Kid continued into town, hoping to heal up before they continue their journey to become the ultimate Pokemon Champion.
