To say Lillian was excited was an understatement. She had already been on a journey before, sure. But this was a whole new region, well away from her parent's grasps, giving her (almost) unlimited freedom to do as she wanted. Not to mention, she got a new, completely adorable Pokemon as her starter Pokemon!
"You'd think there'd be more people here," Lillian mused as they walked along, the more sun slowly evaporating all of the dew left behind. "But I guess we got a head start today, didn't we?"
The Squirtle seemed to either not notice, or not care that his trainer was speaking. As the blue haired girl skipped along the path, the water type kept a steady pace behind his trainer; as if he just wanted to take a nap instead of starting an adventure with his new trainer. Lillian couldn't really blame him. Most starters were pretty young when they were given out to their trainers, right? Something about them being able to bond easier with their new trainers.
"I bet we'll find a whole lot of Pokemon here, though," Lillian went on, pausing to let the small Pokemon slowly catch up to her. "Ooo, I wonder what kind of Pokemon live here? I heard a lot of Pokemon migrate between Kanto and Johto frequently, they're so close together."
"Squir -- tle," said Brio, bumping into his trainer's leg and stumbling back a bit, before rubbing at his eyes.
Yeah, he most likely wanted a nap. Lillian wasn't used to such tired unless they were that way as a species. Maybe he just needed to battle and grow stronger before he would grow out of that. They had time to kill before they went to Cherrygrove; a little training and Pokemon catching could be done before they got there.

As the sun continued to rise in the sky so did a wind. The morning was pleasant enough to begin with, but the summer had so far been a dry one. The wind at least brought a hope of a storm. Something the trees lining the main path of route 29 very much wanted and could be noted by their shriveling leaves. However, the promise of a storm meant it would be a little harder to come across any wild pokémon as they would all be shuffling off to their nature homes. Normally the route would be lively with at least a few youthful trainers, but it seemed it was still too early for them as the trial was peacefully quiet. The breeze continued to gain strength as Lillian and Brio continued along. Bits of dust and cracked earth being picked up and swept along the current. The sky was a bit cloudy but none of the heavily burdened clouds signature of a thunderous storm. A bit unfortunate for the vegetation, but there was one wild traveler that was struggling enough with the building wind. On a low branch up ahead it stretched its lengthy red body. Butt end curled around the tip of one branch as it desperately tried to reach for a near branch of another tree. The worm was very young and skinny, it was clear to see, and the branch it had been on was cleared of any nutritious leaves. But the one across had a lush bundle. No doubt the wurmple's stretch across was for a hunger not satisfied by the shriveled bits dotting the tree it wanted so much to leave behind. Unfortunately with the wind picking up that made the transition between the two branches rather tricky. Both were swaying back and forth, up and down, and with the wind also pushing up against the pokémon itself it was a task just to keep anchored while it extended itself to try and catch the other branch. And the wind wasn't about to give any quarter. A sudden powerful gust whipped by and caught Wurmple well. With a crack the tip of the branch it had been holding snapped. It fell to the ground only after the wind was done carrying it several feet. More particles and small debris were being lifted and slung around by the winds and soon vision was obscured by a haze of dust. New Bark had gotten its storm. Wurmple shook itself straight and squinted through the dust, noticing the tall lanky shape of a human. Its tummy rumbled and its heart still pumped with adrenaline from the fright of flying. The bug type squeaked its name a few times as it looked at its surroundings. It had landed quite far away from the nearest tree. No escape. A wurmple was found! (LV 3) Will Lillian battle it? If so, you may begin with declaring a moveWeather = Sandstorm

The wind seemed to be their enemy today. As the sun slowly rose over the horizon, the wind began to pick up. Lillian became somewhat worried. Was there a storm coming? No, there couldn't have been. There didn't even seem to be a cloud in the sky, for that matter. The only thing that hinted towards storm was the even minuscule amount of wild Pokemon in the area as they traveled further along the route. Trainers seemed to be even rarer. Maybe there was a storm coming after all, and neglecting to check the weather report before they left New Bark made her unperceived to the storm ahead? But then Brio would be worried, too right?
The little Squirtle stumbling behind her in a sleepy haze made her think otherwise. There could have likely been a herd of Tauros passing by in absurd number, and he wouldn't have noticed unless they were right up on them. Lillian sighed, unheard in the gusts of wind billowing past them as they tried to continue. Hopefully, he would grow out of that when he evolved.
Then again, she could have been giving him less credit than he deserved. She paused as they were walking along to make sure he was keeping up -- didn't want him getting too far behind and thus possibly lost in the process, right? -- only to notice the Pokemon had paused and was looking curiously above them. Lillian looked to where he was staring. The blue haired girl almost screeched and scattered back at the sight of the bug type Pokemon, more surprised than anything. She was lucky she did; not too long after, the Wurmple fell to the ground not too far from where she had been standing. Lillian recognized the Pokemon almost instantly. The Pokemon was native to Hoenn, her home, and actually fairly common among most routes. It seemed confused. It had been eating, maybe had fallen off the branch? She really needed to start paying attention more.
"Maybe now's a good time for a first battle!" Lillian said, somewhat enthusiastically over the wind billowing past them. The Squirtle seemed to stare at the girl for a moment, then rubbed at his eyes and focused his attention to the cowaring Wurmple. "Yeah!" Lillian went on. "We'd get two different possibilities for evolution if we caught it, so let's go! Use your tackle!"
"Squirtle," the little Pokemon, rubbing it's eyes once more (perhaps because of the dust being brought up by the wind). It took a moment of wobbling around before the water type finally stumbled forward to tackle the wild Wurmple.

Though Wurmple had no hope of escaping without a battle there was one thing going for the bug Pokemon and that was the fact that neither it or Squirtle had any real battling experience so it did not have to worry about fighting an experienced Pokemon. Having said that it was both less bulky, muscular, and speedy than its opponent leaving it with very few other bright spots to look forward to. As worried as it was about the lack of advantages it had its cute looks might just be enough to buy it a bit of time to get an attack off before Brio could cause any damage or at least it hoped as it crawled towards him slower than a snail trying to get in range. Brio did not fall for the bugs looks as he rushed forward as the sand from the passing dust storm pelted both him and the Wurmple without mercy as he got close enough to finally strike the Wurmple. He delivered a mighty tackle attack causing moderate damage leaving Wurmple at an even bigger disadvantage than it started out with but by doing so he put himself in range for a retaliatory strike. Wurmple unleashed a Tackle of its own causing far less damage than Brio had but if nothing else it proved the Wurmple had a bit of fight in it as little hope it honestly had of winning the battle. Wurmple was so weak that the pelting sand from the sandstorm caused nearly the same damage to Brio as the bug types tackle and though the bug suffered similar damage Brio was clearly the stronger Pokemon by the end of the first round. There were still small glimmers of hope for the bug but if it did not run into a string of miracles this battle was going to get out of hand really quickly. Wild Battle Weather: Sandstorm (Both Pokemon take 1/16th of their health in damage every turn.) Wurmple | Level 3| Shield Dust HP: 56% (9/16) (Took 1 damage from Sandstorm) Status: Normal Used Tackle VS

Well, this sand storm really wasn't on their side. Lillian sighed in annoyance, knowing she'd be cleaning sand and dirt out of her hair and clothes for weeks (darn not having constant access to a washer and shower on a daily basis; one of the few curses of being a trainer and traveling the world). Regardless, she didn't think there'd be much to this battle, anyhow. It was but a small Wurmple, right? The battle would be over before Brio had a chance to loose too much health. Plus, while he did seem to grow weaker, the water type didn't seem to notice -- or care; that'd be the right word for it, really -- the sand storm going on around it. Granted, he seemed to be rubbing at his eyes a bit more, but still.
The tackle from the foe Wurmple didn't seem to do much for Brio either way. The Squirtle stumbled back from the sudden hit, and a rather humorous upset sound came from the small Pokemon. He blinked again, and looked back to Lily slowly as if he couldn't remember the small amount of moves he had to make a decision on his own. Sigh; how Lillian forgot the perks of having fully trained -- and grown up -- Pokemon could bring.
"Alright, Brio, use tackle again!" Lillian said -- then gagged slightly as she was sure dirt managed to get into her mouth somehow.
The Squirtle nodded, and lurched forward with another tackle.

As bad as things looked for the poor Wurmple had to try to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat as unlikely as it seemed at this point. It had seriously underestimated how much damage even a young Squirtle could cause it with a single Tackle and in its desperation to try and stop the Squirtle from getting an easy win it looked away from the turtle long enough to give the turtle Pokemon time to close the gap once again even as the dust storm raged on with no end in sight. Had the storm been any stronger Brio might not of been able to keep track of the bug type but luckily the dust was just transparent enough that he was able to stay on target He ran towards the bug as it turned to face him delivering another mighty Tackle that caused considerable damage to the bug. As Wurmple slowly recovered it could feel its energy had fallen to critical levels and that another hit would surely bring it down. With that in mind the bug rushed forward delivering a fairly weak Tackle of its own. Brio nearly laughed it off as Wurmple started to panic realizing it had very little hope of coming back from such a poor round. If that was not bad enough the dust storm yet again took its toll on both Pokemon as a tiny bit of their health was taken from the unfavorable conditions but Wurmple clearly had taken the blunt of the storm as it could hardly move now. It had no chance of out running Brio now and it had no real options left as the next round was about to begin. The only thing it could think about was what its fate would be as Lillian was in sole control of its fate. Wild Battle Weather: Sandstorm (Both Pokemon take 1/16th of their health in damage every turn.) Wurmple | Level 3| Shield Dust HP: 12% (2/16) (Took 1 damage from Sandstorm) Status: Normal Used Tackle VS

The sandstorm didn't seem to be letting up. At least, it wasn't going to anytime soon. But she didn't want this cute looking -- albeit slightly creepy -- Pokemon all caught up in the storm. Then she'd really feel bad for battling with it. Figuring she could at least trade something else for it, Lillian pulled out a spare Pokeball out of her bag and gave it a toss. Brio barely seemed to notice, even as the sand storm raging on. Then again, he was also pretty tired, poor thing.

The device tread the sandy air for a bit, the dust and other small particle debris making the journey more difficult than it had any right to be. Luckily the vibrant worm wasn't going anywhere fast. Not normally and definitely not right now as it barely clung to consciousness. The dust stinging its eyes helped a bit with that. However all that would go away once the pokéball smacked it on the noggin. Whisked away inside with a bright flash all the other woes were quelled. No more sand whipping against it, no more noisy wind, no more turtle tackling it. Once on the ground the ball rolled a little before righting itself and assume its capture mode. It wriggled lightly. Whether that was simply the pokéball resisting the force of the surrounding dust storm or by Wurmple's meager attempts at escape it was hard to tell, but the important part was what came next. A soft click!Success! Either too tired to resist or simply not wanting to brave the hardships of route 29, the little worm had been captured with no trouble. Now it was just a matter of Lillian and Brio getting themselves free of this annoying bit of weather. Though, it did seem like it was less strong than before. A glow of sunlight breaking through the dirty haze. Perhaps it would be over soon all on its own. SUCCESS! Lillian squealing with joy, jumping up and down slightly (and causing Brio to startle slightly in the process). The blue haired girl practically skipped over to the Pokeball with excitement, picking it up and examining it for a moment. Her first catch in the Johto region -- she felt very proud of herself, even if the Pokemon in question was a small bug type Pokemon. She tried not to be picky, though, knowing each Pokemon had their own unique potential. Besides, perhaps it would evolve into a Beautifly one day, if she was lucky enough. (Not that Dustox was a horrible Pokemon; Beautifuly was just undoubtedly a prettier sight to behold than its counterpart.) Lillian put the Pokeball on her belt proudly none the less, and turned back to Brio, who almost seemed to be falling asleep at this point. The trainer sighed; hopefully, this wouldn't last forever.
"You did a great job there, Brio!" Lillian complemented, approaching the Pokemon and squatting down to pat the water type on the head. "But that Wurmple sure did a number on you, huh? This sand storm really isn't helping too much, either. Oh, I know! Here!"
Lillian move ever so slightly so she could rummage through her bag in search of something. It took a long moment, however the trainer eventually pulled out what looked like a potion from her bag. After making sure the rest of the bag's contents were back in place, Lillian again turned back to face the Squirtle, who watched her with minimal interest.
"This might hurt a little," Lillian warned as she held the potion out to the water type, "but just hold still for a minute, alright?"
Brio blinked blankely at her. Lillian assumed that was the Squirtle giving her the okay, so she sprayed the Pokemon as best she could to heal his wounds. He didn't try to fight it too much, only turning away here or there when he didn't like the feeling of the odd substance. However, any traces of a battle quickly wore away from his small frame, and he even seemed a little surprised at how fast his wounds healed.
"There, all better!" Lillian chirped, storing the empty container in her bag until she could find a better place to dispose of it. Lillian then stood, turning around to see what their next move was. "Well, at least this weird sand storm is beginning to die down," she muttered. "Though it looks like the sun's geting brighter over that way! I bet that's where Cherrygrove it. C'mon, lets go!"
Lillian started her trek through route twenty nine once more, Brio ambling behind at a leisurely pace. If even a Wurmple was brave enough -- or possibly stupid -- to venture out into the middle of a sand storm, maybe they could find other Pokemon or even a trainer somewhere out here to battle.
( Lillian uses a potion on Brio. )

No need to use a Potion, Rab! Outside of Quests (or where otherwise stated), you get to recover for free at the nearest Pokemon Centre after a battle. (No potion deducted.)Lillian's next encounter was already watching her and her Squirtle continued on through Route 29. A plump, yellow blob had its eyes firmly fixed on the pair. It wasn't quite sure what to make of this human, but it felt that she was probably bad news for it. It had to flush her out somehow. It continued to skulk in between the trees and shrubs of the Route and waited for its chance to strike. Not that it had the faintest clue what "strike" meant in this context. It probably had to work that out soon, actually. This stalker continued its hunt for about half an hour, looking for a signal that it could finally reveal itself and attack. But the human wasn't really... playing ball. The yellow creature didn't know what it wanted to happen, but this girl wasn't doing it. Frustrated, the creature burst out from its hiding place with a loud "DROOOOW! in lieu of a coherent challenge. Lumbering forward, the tapir-like critter wasn't going to take "no" for an answer.

The sandstorm seemed to be going steady, if not dying down slower and slower as they walked along. It wasn't like Lillian noticed much of it either way, too focused on looking in between the route around her -- mostly in the hopes that she would see another person, if not for a sign that she might be nearing civilization -- and occasionally her map. Brio occasionally yawned or made a chirp, as if he let his trainer know that he was still there. He was smart enough to stay close, at least; or, at worst, didn't want to get lost in case he got too tired to walk. That seemed to be coming up fast, and Lillian would've liked to get the small water type to a Pokemon Center soon. Besides, while she was used to travelling and eating on the go, a nice hot meal still sounded nice even for her first day on her new journey.
Brio's tenancy -- as Lillian now deemed it a tenancy, if not a new common occurrence -- to stay behind his trainer so he could walk at a slow, leisurely pace seemed to be semi- useful. His footsteps stopped behind her, and it took Lillian a moment to realize this and trekked on a few steps. The trainer turned to question him, but was meant with a low, elonged, "DROOOOW!" Lillian squealed and jumped, pressing a hand against her heart in the process. Brio simply seemed to blink at the Drowzee that had appeared, obviously wanting a battle. Well, a lot of help he was.
Lillian felt running wasn't really in the game plan. Drowzee could put Pokemon and people to sleep, right? She couldn't seem to think straight in her current panic, and instead turned to Brio. "Well, what are you waiting for?" she asked, slight panic seeping out of her voice. "Use, uhm, water gun?"
Lillian hadn't even been sure a Squirtle so young could even use that yet. But sure enough, after the Squirtle seemed to stare at it's trainer for a long moment, looked back to the Drowzee and lazily opened his mouth, producing a stream of steady water that blasted at the Psychic type Pokemon.

Once Drowzee was certain that its challenge had been accepted the psychic type Pokemon walked towards Brio not quite convinced that it had to rely on its psychic powers yet as the young Squirtle did not look very tough. Drowzee had already noticed Lillian's hesitation to give an order along with Brio taking a moment to understand exactly what was going on and Drowzee believed it could strike first thanks to their slow reaction times but it proved to be a costly mistake as Brio fired his Water Gun attack scoring a direct hit on the psychic types face. Though his aim was impeccable the attack did not do a whole lot of damage as Drowzee specialized in their special defense. Even if the Water Gun was not a huge threat just yet it did mean that Drowzee was already at a disadvantage before it could even strike back but Brio never expected a psychic type to rely on a physical attack to start things off as it wiped the water from its face and then smacked the turtle across the face. Brio did a pretty good job enduring the attack but the mark on his face showed Drowzee meant business as weak as its first attempt had been. Drowzee may not have done as much damage as it could have to other Pokemon on the route but it was still fired up after scoring a good hit. It was not going to let the one hit Brio scored get it down too much as irritating as the Water Gun had been. With the next round just moments away Drowzee got ready to strike again but this time it seemed like it was going to rely on one of its ranged attacks to see if they would work better than Pound had. If luck was on its side it could make up the small gap between the two Pokemon in no time at all. Wild Battle Weather: Normal Drowzee | Level 6 | HP: 80% (20/25) Status: Normal Drowzee used Pound! VS

Well at least something to be going right for Lillian, though she wasn't sure whether or not Brio had just learned that move after battling the Wurmple or not. At least he was getting stronger, which meant they were closer to being strong enough to battle the first gym leader. Maybe they could even try catching this Drowzee, too! Granted, it freaked out Lillian as much as any bug type might, but it also seemed pretty cunning. Or at least tried to be. It could also help them out with the fighting type gym leader in Cianwood.
In Lillian's thoughts, she failed to pay attention to the battle -- much less have Brio try to dodge anything. This made her jump at the sudden slapping sound as the Drowzee slapped the little turtle Pokemon. This caused Brio to stumble back, a small hand rather quickly shooting up to rub at the red spot appearing where the Drowzee had slapped him. He didn't seem too upset or mad about it, which really annoyed Lillian in a way. She couldn't help but sigh at this, feeling less dreadful about the Drowzee now.
"Alright, Brio, use growl to lower the Drowzee's attack!" Lillian ordered, hoping that at least any further attack wouldn't do much more damage so they could still continue battling.
The little Squirtle did as it told. Granted, it still took him a moment, only doing so after it was done rubbing at his cheeks. He gave out a low growl, though it seemed to be more of a mix between a whine and a squeak. Lillian didn't honestly know whether to coo or fall over.

The long snout twitched, the soft sound of a sniff accompanying the motion that was barely above the rush of breeze twisting its way through the trees. Like a bustling audience the flora lining the route rustled in anticipation of the next exchange between the two. Though, this time it wasn't going to be a trade of blows. The call by the trainer came as a relief to the Drowzee, making it reconsider its original plan to switch tactics for something with more range. With the tiny turtle still rubbing its cheek perhaps the psychic type would have the upper hand if but for a moment. However, even though Brio may not have been acting with the utmost punctuality Drowzee was still the more lumbering figure. Plus it wasn't like the water type had to get much motion to follow through with Lillian's order. Turning his enthused attention toward the wild pokémon he wriggled his stubby nose an let out a confused growl. As Drowzee approached it couldn't help but pick up on the sound and in turn let that confusion seep into its own limbs. Was the squirtle more weakened than it had surmised? The noise was pitiful, but cute and pleading in a way. By the time Drowzee had made it within striking distance and reeled its fist back the effect of the growl had fully settled in. The punch came down much like the last, smacking into Brio's same cheek though not nearly as roughly. It had turned into something the turtle would expect of a play fight.
