Having recovered from the stomach bug that had kept him grounded for a few days, Max was now feeling energised and motivated. The downtime that Max had to recover allowed him a gracious amount of time to assess his options moving forward. After witnessing the sheer strength and power that Crimson used upon the wild Mawile they had encountered in Dark Cave, Max was feeling confident about his teams readiness to challenge Falkner at the Violet City Gym. Before leaving the pokemon centre at which he had been staying, Max treated Crimson, Anubis and Jupiter to a slice of cake, much to their delight.

Before setting his sights on Violet City Gym, Max took a bit of a detour as he noticed a shopping stall near the centre of the town. Among the various wares that were for sale was a green egg, this had definitely caught Max's eye. Max questioned the shop owner, who happened to go by the nickname Marchbaby, as to what pokemon was inside. Max's was informed that the egg contained the bug type pokemon known as Scyther, this new information had Max's eyes glistening to get his hands on it, legally of course. Max pursed his wallet and delivered the necessary funds to Marchbaby and made his way towards the local pokemon gym with his new egg cradled in his arms like a baby.

An evident beaming smile could be seen on Max's face, confidence was clearly not something he was lacking moving towards his greatest challenge to date. Max's team was young and mostly inexperienced however he has the utmost faith in them and their abilities. In terms of his team, Crimson the Charmander and Jupiter the Mareep had been sharing most of the action on the front lines of battle. Anubis and Hope however had temporarily been sidelined in the lines of battle, however their time to shine was sure to come.

To earn the Zephyr Badge, first Max would have to defeat Falkner and his band of birds. Jupiter the Mareep, being an electric type pokemon would be taking the lead for this venture and so in preparation Max had released the bubbly electric pokemon out of its pokeball. 

"Alright, let's do this!"

Max pushed the doors of the Violet City Gym open and stepped inside as he gazed at his new surroundings, the decor of the room definitely signified that Falkner was a fan of the avian kind. Jupiter was already bouncing around in excitement, her personality and pink scarf certainly made her look alot less threatening to most, Max however was aware of the potential his electric type partner possessed, despite her obvious shortcomings in the attention department.

"Falkner, if you're around I'd like to challenge you for the Zephyr Badge"

A vaulted ceiling of glass and elevator up into second floor that only spread halfway across the building was more than enough signal there was going to be a battle related to the sky somehow; even if one ignored the slight smell of a pidgey coop. It wasn't strong by any means, the gym kept very spin and span; particularly the glass. Even when closer to transparent veil separating them from the outside it was still nearly impossible to tell there was anything there at all. The only signal was the thin steel seams keeping all the panels in place.

At Max's call someone answered. They were up high, on the platform.
"You couldn't have arrived at a better time," he began, walking to the edge and looking down to greet his newest challenger. "My pokémon are due for some training." He smiled, if a little smugly, then pointed to the elevator. "Come on up."


The view from the second level of the gym was amazing. While not immensely high by any means it was still like being on a roof patio in the city. The gym had enough of a clear birth around it to make for a scenic view of the surrounding greens littering the streets. With a few of the side windows open bringing in a breeze and some faint noise it was indistinguishable from actually being outside.

"Welcome to my gym, the first badge on many trainer's journeys. I prefer to battle up here as it's a comfort to my bird pokémon. From up here it makes it feel like I'm soaring right along with them," he explained, digging a hand into one of his pockets and withdrawing a pokéball. "But I won't bore you with too much of that. You said you were here to try and win my badge, so what do you say we just get started. You have a name?" As he asked he tossed the pokéball into the air and out came a chipper little bird very well known in this part of Johto.

The Violet City gym was certainly a marvellous sight from inside, if not for the thin steel seams holding the glass window panels together, one would not be criticised for believing that the gym itself was open. Falkner had clearly adapted his surroundings to resemble that of a bird aviary in which he and his partners would feel most comfortable.

Max gazed up as he heard a voice emanating from the second level of the gym, it was the voice of Falkner, the Violet City gym leader. Upon his request Max and Jupiter rode the elevator to the second level, Jupiter's energy and excitement was clearly on show as she seemingly could not remain still, and here Max was believing that he was the most excited member of the team to be going for his first gym badge.

As Max arrived on the second level of the gym he was able to view Falkner up close. Falkner's unique appearance certainly would assist him in standing out in a crowd. Apart from his blue hair he was wearing a white-outlined blue jacket decorated with four white buttons and some indigo shorts.

"Pleasure to meet you Falkner. The name's Maxwell, but I prefer Max."

The Violet City gym leader wasted no time as he cut the rigmarole short and released a small bird pokemon from its pokeball, a young Pidgey, a common pokemon within the Johto region. At the sight of her new opponent Jupiter was bustling with excitement, she was clearly ready for battle as she bounded in front of Max. Flying type pokemon are generally regarded as quick pokemon, the speed advantage was clearly in favour of Falkner's Pidgey over the more bulky sheep pokemon, this was a factor Max was well aware of.

"Okay Jupiter, it's your time to shine girl. Let's shock the competition with your signature Thunderbolt attack!"

Jupiter the Mareep was quite the interesting character, this was primarily due to her bubbly, attention-deprived personality was visible to basically anybody who so much as glanced in her general direction. As she had shown before in battle, Jupiter was not a push-over for anybody. Despite her short attention span, Jupiter was continuously alert to any request her trainer gave her.

As Max beckoned his orders the wool pokemon glared at her flying type adversary as yellow sparks begun to surround Jupiter's body and begun to crackle, before long a powerful bolt of yellow electricity would be unleashed from the Mareep's body towards Falkner's Pidgey.

Max keenly observed Falkner so as to gauge the gym leader's confidence, normally with a type advantage this lopsided one would feel and exhibit the pressure throughout their appearance and actions. Max was sure that Falkner has experienced his fair share of trainers that had waltzed through the gym doors with a concrete plan to abuse typing advantage and so would have a plan up his sleeve, this was the primary reason why Max had a back-up plan ready to be executed.

After learning his opponents name Falkner quickly learned which Pokemon he would be up against as well and he was not too surprised by the young mans choice as electric type Pokemon were a common foe he had to face. It was not a bad choice against him at all but Falkner did have a few ways to overcome and his Pokemon had a small speed advantage as well to allow him to take advantage of his one defense against electric type attacks. " Mareep is a pretty good choice I must admit at least on paper as Pidgey do not normally have many options to protect themselves from its electric type attacks but there is a single move they can learn to overcome that weakness." He said as a smile ran across his face.

As he watched Jupiter build up her energy he gave his Pidgey an order as well to try and stop the electric type from scoring a hit. " Pidgey time for us to use Sand Attack. It is the only hope you will have of dodging that Thinderbolt." He said as Pidgey scooped up a bunch of sand in its feet and flung it in the sheep Pokemon's face. The sand caused Jupiter to lose some of her ability to aim but it was not enough to totally ruin her aim as she scored a glancing blow on Pidgey who fell to the ground as soon as it was struck by the electric type attack. Though this first round did not go his way Pidgey was the weaker of his two Pokemon and as such he was far from defeated.

He recalled his Pidgey and then tossed a Pokeball containing his Pidgeotto in front of him. " Pidgey you did well but luck was not on our side. Pidgeotto should be able to handle things from here." The larger bird Pokemon certainly looked like a tougher opponent but there was still the question of both numbers and if it could overcome a type disadvantage after Pidgey failed to do so. " Now that the first round is over I can really go all out from here on. Will you be swapping out Pokemon before we begin?" He asked as he waited for a response.

» OOC: Using Running Shoes!

Despite the obvious typing disadvantage that Falkner was faced with, his facial expression indicated that he was not at all phased, to him it appeared to be just another day on the job. For Maxwell, this was no ordinary day, this would be the day he received his first Johto League badge in the form of Falkner's Zephyr Badge. As Falkner iterated to Max, the blue haired male indeed had a plan up his sleeve that was ready for execution. With a smirk on his face Max caught Falkner's gaze towards him,

"I guess we will just have to wait and see how that plays out"

And so the battle was underway. While the type advantage was indefinitely in Jupiter the Mareep's favour, a slight speed advantage was in Falkner's Pidgey's favour. The speed advantage allowed Pidgey enough time to fling bunches of sand towards Jupiter, this attack was aimed at reducing the electric type pokemon's accuracy as her eyes begun to sting with minute sand particles stuck in the corner of her eyes. Despite the annoying sand particles being stuck in her eye, Jupiter was able to push through with her attack as the yellow sparks that had been surrounding the sheep pokemon crackled violently before a long powerful bolt of electricity was formed and unleashed towards Falkner's Pidgey.

The aftermath of Jupiter's attack was much more definitive than that of Falkner's Pidgey's measly sand attack, the flying type pokemon had fainted under the power of Jupiter's thunderbolt attack. Max could not help but smile cheekily towards his opponent, the early signs of the contest were certainly tilting within his favour. Falkner had returned his fainted Pidgey to rest in its pokeball and in turn had released a much bigger and stronger looking bird pokemon, this was Pidgeotto, the evolution of Pidgey. Max's eyes lit up with excitement, maybe Pidgeotto would provide an actual challenge for he and his team.

Max glanced down at Jupiter and could see that she was visibly irritated by the sand particles that were in her eyes, as Falkner posed the question on whether he wanted to switch out pokemon, Max gave the question some thought,

"I'll pass on that offer thanks, I have faith young Jupiter here can get the job done."

Falkner's confidence was unwavering despite his first pokemon having lost its fight, the resilience that the gym leader had shown thus far was admirable. The stage was now set as Jupiter the Mareep and Falkner's Pidgeotto prepared for battle. The speed advantage would definitely be more pronounced for Pidgeotto, the flying type pokemon's appearance indicated that it was definitely more developed than its previous evolutionary form.

"You're doing great Jupiter, keep up the good work girl! Let's try a little combo out, first I'd like you to use Thunder Wave and then follow it up with Thunderbolt!"

Jupiter heard Max loud and clear, however her already dwindling attention was more so exacerbated by the sand stuck in her. Despite the obvious irritation that she was in, Jupiter begun to prepare her oncoming combo of attacks as sparks begun to crackle off her fluffy coat of wool.

Sure Pidgey had gotten knocked out, but Pidgeotto was much wiser and stronger. Just looking at its anatomy would be evident in describing what makes this Pokemon better than the prior evolution. “Your Mareep is definitely a good type to use against my bird Pokemon. But it’s still a younger version of an otherwise powerful foe.” Pidgetto spread its large wings in an attempt to show its brawn. Afterwards, it flew in the air, circling the small electric Pokemon like it would its prey.

“Alright Pidgeotto use your gust attack!” The large bird flapped furiously, conjuring a strong breeze to knock the Mareep of its feet. Jupiter rolled across the battlefield upon being toppled over. In retaliation, Jupiter released a shock wave of electric energy, causing Pidgeotto to become paralyzed. This didn’t speak well for a Pokemon who relied mostly on its speed. While Pidgeotto tried to shake off the paralysis, the electric Pokemon released a large bolt of thunder which rattled the foe down to its skeleton. Yet, through all of this, the bird had some fight left. “Try to use your gust again!” Another burst of wind came through and hit the electric Pokemon again.

» OOC: Going, going, gone!

Back and forth, that was one surefire way to describe how the battle between Falkner's Pidgeotto and Max's Mareep had gone. The gym leader's alpha flying type pokemon had begun the proceedings by knocking Jupiter off her feet with a strong gust of wind. In retaliation, Jupiter worked to remove the obvious speed advantage that was in her opponents favour. Jupiter's thunder wave attack caused Falkner's Pidgeotto to become paralysed, a status ailment that Max was sure that Falkner had seen many times before in previous gym battles.

Falkner noted that although Mareep was strong, her evolution's were definitely a force to be reckoned with. Max smiled in excitement as he noticed that the newly paralysed Pidgeotto appeared much slower than his own pokemon now, the tables had turned in his favour. Pidgeotto took the full brunt of Jupiter's thunderbolt attack, shocking the already paralysed flying type pokemon to the core. In an act of desperation, the paralysed and clearly hurt Pidgeotto fired off another gust of wind, this attack however clearly did not look as polished or as dangerous as its previous iteration. With a cheeky grin on his face Max glanced from Jupiter to Falkner,

"Quite an electrifying turn of events don't you think Falkner?"

Max then turned his attention away from Falkner and back onto the battle that was occurring directly in front of him. The typing advantage strategy that Max had entered the gym challenge with was certainly paying dividends so far. The paralysed and injured state that Pidgeotto was in was not a pretty sight, the flying type pokemon would likely succumb to the damage inflicted after one more dosage of Jupiter's thunderbolt attack.

"Let's close the show Jupiter, hit Pidgeotto with another Thunderbolt attack!"

The bubbly electric type pokemon bounced around in excitement, she was clearly the fresher of the two pokemon on the battlefield. Yellow sparks begun to surround Jupiter's body and begun to crackle, soon a long and powerful bolt of yellow electricity would be unleashed from Jupiter's body with a direct target in the form of Falkner's Pidgeotto.

Mareep was definitely a good foe! Falkner was pleased to see such a strong little Pokemon step up to the plate for its first gym battle. “Yes, I would agree that your electric Pokemon is a formidable foe. Although I hate to see my birds suffer, your Mareep contains some raw potential.” Falkner rarely saw a foe with so little filter in its energy output. “Thunderbolt is a bird’s worst nightmare, I’m surprised such a little Pokemon knows a move that even Electabuzz trains to learn.”

Falkner looked at his wounded Pidgeotto, knowing that its paralysis would equate to a severe cut in speed. There was very little chance they’d make it out. Suddenly, Jupiter began glowing with static energy. No doubt another thunderbolt would be soon to come. With a loud crack, a bolt of thunder cracked towards the bird. Knocked out for sure, the leader returned his Pokemon. “Wow. Your Mareep certainly knows how to battle. I present you with your prize; a package that contains various valuable items as well as your gym badge. The zephyr badge is an important step towards any Pokemon journey.” Falkner handed the bundle over, but as he did so, Mareep began to glow. “Well- it appears our battle caused Jupiter to evolve.”

Falkner was clearly impressed by the power that Jupiter possessed, after all she did happen to be executing a move that many electric type pokemon stronger than her would spend numerous hours training to perfect. Max had arrived to this gym challenge well prepared, his choice to teach his electric type partner a truly electrifying electric type technical move had proved to be a masterstroke.

"Jupiter, she's truly one of a kind that's for sure."

The excitement of the moment could be seen on Maxwell's face as Jupiter's latest dosage of thunderbolt landed a clean shot upon Falkner's Pidgeotto, the flying type pokemon had fought valiantly against the odds however Max's strategy and execution had been superior on this day.

Humble in defeat, Falkner provided Max with a package, this package contained some pokedollars, the technical machine for a move known as Roost and last but certainly not least, the Zephyr Badge. Max was so filled with excitement that his attention towards his own pokemon had dwindled, it wasn't until Falkner alerted him that something unique was occurring to Jupiter.

"Oh boy, this really is the icing on the cake for Me!"

Max was overjoyed as he watched his electric type partner glow, Jupiter's evolution was the culmination of the hard work she had put into her training as of late. The small yellow wool sheep pokemon had transformed fairly dramatically, Jupiter was now bipedal and had a pink skin complexion to name two of the major changes appearance wise. Max shook hands with Falkner and nodded his head towards the blue haired male in appreciation,

"Thanks for the battle Falkner, we should do it again someday!"

OOC: Will be replacing Tackle with Charge on Jupiter and will be allowing her to evolve, I will provide an edited sprite for her once it has been made and will post in the Pokemon/Item Transfer thread then! Will be closing this thread and moving Max on!
