summer: balmy, noon |
So far today had been horrendous! Jake couldn't believe his ears when his father had called that morning. He had to go to some stupid lab in some podunk little town and get a starter there?! Why the hell did he, Jacob Grant, have to pick up some dirty, dingy, little weakling of a starter pokemon from some idiot professor when his father could've purchased him a full team of the best breed and fully evolved pokemon from anywhere in the world? This was simply ludicrous and completely outrageous!
The whole ride down to New Bark Town, in the back of his father's Cadillac SUV, Jacob sulked in the back seat glowering out the window as the scenery passed him by. This was completely absurd. Hadn't he just spent how ever many long damn years in school so he didn't have to do this stupid journey thing?! And on top of all this his father was cutting him off! At least until his journey was complete. His mother had rightfully argued for at least giving Jake a generous stipend and emergency credit card but his father said something about some idiotically nostalgic moment of his own childhood journey and how he'd learned and grown so much during that time and how it'd led to his own path of becoming the well-renowned researcher he was now. Fat lot of good that did Jacob. He didn't give a rat's ass about pokemon research, he just wanted powerful pokemon to highlight his own awesomeness.
The road began to widened, what little road there'd been, and the first makings of a small town began to come into view. Jake glowered even harder, now looking more constipated than angry. This whole thing was a straight up insult from his father, who of course couldn't even tell him in person. Not that Jacob really cared all that much about seeing them, neither parent had even made it to his graduation ceremony, but that was to be expected. His father he saw maybe twice a year if that and his mother was typically in and out visiting her various friends and having lavish parties that held no interest at all to Jacob. Even just that morning as Jacob was leaving, his mother had prettied herself up and dashed off to have breakfast with the mayor. Again, not that Jacob cared, he was just pissed at them about this whole stupid thing.
"Sir, we've arrived." Cornwall, the driver, announced as he pulled up in front of the quaint little laboratory and came to a stop. Jake flopped back in his seat and groaned.
"This sucks. Screw this, take me home Cornwall. I'll make father give me a proper pokemon! I can't believe he'd try to pull something like this." Jacob whined as he crossed his arms over his chest and pouted, looking more like an eight year old than an eighteen year old. Cornwall glanced in the rearview mirror and raised a brow.
"My apologizes sir, but I was instructed simply to drop you off, not drive you home." Cornwall knew well how to handle the bratty adolescent. Despite Jacob's usual influence over his parents, the staff knew that their orders were to be adhered too above that of their son. Cornwall could well see the benefit Jacob might gain from a journey, same as his father believed, so knew his father would strongly reprimand him if he brought Jacob back against the doctor's wishes.
Jacob's jaw dropped and his hazel eyes bored holes in the back of Cornwall's head. "Are you freaking serious!? Just take me home! Now! Now! Now!" He bellowed, stomping a foot on the floor of the vehicle with each word. Cornwall let out a sigh and stepped out of the SUV. He turned and opened Jacob's door and stood there patiently waiting. Jake continued to glare daggers at Cornwall and scrunched down in the seat refusing to move. Cornwall raised a brow but too did not move. He knew he could outlast Jacob as Cornwall had a thousand times more patience than the brat in the seat.
"UGH this is so stupid!" Jacob continued to whine now glaring at the back of the driver seat. He knew he wouldn't win but he wasn't about to show it. The pair literally sat there for twenty minutes in a stalemate neither one willing to budge on this. Still Cornwall could see Jake's resolve waning. The tiniest hint of a smirk crossed the driver's lips. A few trainers had passed in and out of the lab, shooting the stationary vehicle a couple curious glances, but Jacob didn't care. It wasn't until a cute little redhead dressed in a short lab coat came skipping by that Jacob began to perk up. The girl slipped into the lab and Jacob quickly sat upright.
"Whoa, I didn't know they had chicks like that working at a place like this!" Jacob stated in surprise as he slipped out of the car, all traces of his earlier tantrum vanishing from his mood. A cocky grin was suddenly plastered over Jacob's features and he glanced at Cornwall. "Keep the engine running Cornwall, I shan't be long." Jacob stated as he turned toward the lab. Cornwall made to say something then a mischievous glint gleamed in the older gentleman's eye as he watched Jacob saunter up to the lab doors.
"Of course sir..." Cornwall stated under his breath as he climbed back into the driver seat, and once Jacob was out of sight, put the car in gear and made a loop heading back the way he'd come. Cornwall smirked widely to himself. He'd of course been instructed to only drop Jacob off, not to chauffer him around the region during the entire length of his journey. Now Cornwall had intended to inform Jacob of this but well, after that earlier scene, Jacob could discover this for himself.
Oblivious to his driver abandoning him, Jacob stepped further into the air conditioned lab. At least this was more comfortable than outside. He quickly looked around for the redhead but saw no one now, save for a gangly professor. The professor seemed deeply wrapped up in something and only glanced up briefly when Jacob entered. He waved then motioned toward three pokeballs sitting on a nearby table.
"Welcome, there are your choices, pick one and move along. I'm very busy today." The professor stated as he turned his attention back to his work. Jacob scoffed not liking being ignored but not really wanting to talk to this person either. He still didn't see any sign of the girl from before and a pout began forming on his lips. Well he might as well take one of these daft little things. A projected image was displayed above each pokeball showing what they contained, plus a small note stating their various information including their evolution line. Jacob glanced briefly at the images making a face at all of them.
"UGH is this all you have?" Jacob groaned as he shot the professor a dirty look. The professor shooed Jacob a way and nodded, not even looking up.
"Yes, yes, now pick one and get going." The professor stated as he went back to ignoring Jake. The boy rolled his eyes and let out an even more exasperated groan.
"FIIINE." He grunted and snatched up the ball containing the fire type charmander. Jacob stuck his tongue out at the professor's back then turned around and stomped out in annoyance. As soon as he got outside however he saw that the car was gone. Jacob stared in utter disbelief and gawked. What the hell!?
"CORNWALL! The hell did you go?!" Jacob screamed in the parking lot as he slammed the pokeball in his hand down on the ground causing it to tremble and pop open revealing the charmander within. Jacob stared at the little fire lizard before clenching his fists and shaking them skyward.
"Why the hell is this happening to meee!?" He hollard then turned swiftly on his heel and marched in the direction he'd come, toward the route known as 29. Charmander stood there completely bewildered then hurried to catch up with his new trainer. The little fire type watched the boy seriously concerned about his behavior.
"Char? Mander char?" He asked hesitantly, eyes wide and innocent. Jacob stopped in his tracks and turned back to face the charmander. He had no idea what the charmander was asking and just shot him a dirty look.
"Look you little dinosaur, this is all your fault!" Jacob growled jabbing a finger in the charmander's direction. Charmander blinked in shock wondering what on earth he'd done and what he could do to fix it. "If I hadn't taken so long grabbing one of you stupid starters Cornwall obviously would've waited for me!"
Charmander gapped at the teen having no clue how that could possibly be his fault. Of course in Jacob's mind his logic was perfectly sound. It was obvious that Cornwall had simply been too impatient to wait while Jacob got a starter and must have had to drive off somewhere. He'd be back, Jacob was sure of it.
"UGH! Worst. Day. Ever!" Jacob kicked the ground then resumed stomping back toward the road. He'd simply wait here at the start of the route until Cornwall came back for him. He leaned against the route sign post and crossed his arms over his chest. Charmander cautiously approached him not knowing what else to do but stay near the teen. Jake glowered down at him and pouted. "Stupid little dino."
