Name: Kenneth Vale - He typically prefers to be called "Ken" by most people, especially new acquaintances or people whom he uncommonly interacts with. He thinks being called "Kenny" is childish, but he will not complain when either his older brother or close friends or family call him by that name; he will correct others and insist that they simply calling him "Ken". He will acknowledge being called "Kenneth", but he rarely encourages it outside of formal or official affairs.
Age: 12
Gender: Male
Trainer Type: Beginner Trainer
Hometown: Celadon City in the Kanto Region
Appearance: Kenneth stands about average height (60 inches or 152 centimeters) but weighs roughly below average (85 pounds or 39 kilograms) for his age. He has straight, light brown hair that is cut somewhat short to his neckline; he normally combs his hair free of knots and tangles when he is at home or at a pokémon center, but when he is traveling or camping out, he does not have the luxury to prioritize his appearance. Although most of his family members have blue eyes, like his grandfather on his father's side, he has brown eyes. As Kenneth does not spend a lot of time in the open sun, his skin is very pale in color, and when exposed to a lot of sun, it does not tan all that easily, instead it mostly burns red if not covered in some form of sun protection. He has a permanent, though faint, lined scar on the bottom part of his right hand as a result of James, Jr. played too roughly with him one day at school and he incidentally cut his hand open on a metal chain-link fence.
His typical attire consists of blue jeans with a sweater vest over a collared, short-sleeved shirt, and comfortable hiking shoes to walk in a variety of different terrain. James, Jr. likes to pretend making fun of him for his choice of apparel -- since it is actually their mother who picks out the clothing. Kenneth typically blushes when his brother does this, but ignores it well enough and simply states that he likes the clothing choice, nonetheless. He does not, however, like wearing headgear, but he will relent by wearing a sun visor when he's facing too much direct sunlight. When he and James, Jr. were younger, Kenneth would go without wearing some form of hat when playing with his brother, and their mother would scold them both for that. James, Jr. took it upon himself to force his own baseball cap on the younger Kenneth whenever in such a situation from that point on. Attached to his left wrist is a forest green colored Pokétch he received from his mother just before leaving on the journey. James, Jr. has a red Pokétch he obtained directly from the Pokétch Company when visiting Jubilife City in the Sinnoh region last year.
Kenneth carries around with him a dark green colored backpack. Inside it consists of a sleeping bag, a change of day clothing, a set of nightwear, a set of thick warmwear for the coming cold Autumn and Winter months, necessary toiletry and cooking utensils. There are two cooking pans and a simple campfire metal grill attached to the side of the bag. Also, attached outside the bag is his sun visor when he is not wearing it on his head -- which is, unfortunately, most of the time, queue James, Jr. putting his own cap on Kenneth's head to Kenneth's visible, though silent, frustration. James, Jr. is carrying their joint-use tent and related items as well as a hatchet for splitting firewood when needed; though, having pokémon does trivialize the need of having one.
Notes for James, Jr., he stands at slightly above average height (67.0 inches or 170 centimeters) and weighs about average (115 pounds or 52 kilograms) for his age. He has straight, dark brown hair that is cut very short to just below his ears; he is typically unconcerned about the condition of his hair, regardless of the situation or scenery he is in. He has blue eye, a recessive trait from both of his parents, who both have blue eyes. He typically wears blue jeans with a short-sleeved shirts and customarily wears a baseball cap -- his mother gave him a new black cap with a yellow lightning bolt design striking across half the cap.
Picture: Kenneth is the boy on the left holding the book, while his brother, James, Jr. is on the right patting the squirtle on its head. This picture was taken by one of Jim's friends and fellow pokémon trainer, George, just over two years ago when they returned home while on their Kanto region journey. In the picture, the two are sitting against the trunk of an oak tree inside a park in Celadon City. Kenneth is reading from a hardbound pokémon encyclopedia his brother just gave him as a present for his tenth birthday -- James, Jr. turned twelve two month prior. James, Jr.'s pokémon are the squirtle, Armor -- his first pokémon he received from Professor Oak -- the mankey, Scyle -- his second pokémon he obtained from Route 22 when he accidentally took the wrong route out of Viridian City -- and the pidgey, Zephyr -- his third pokémon he rescued from a swarm of beedrill in the Viridian Forest. The remaining pokémon belong to George -- the bulbasaur, Bud, and the rattata, Fang -- and a third friend, Leiah -- the charmander, Sharlot, and the spearow, Amber. The pokémon, of course, have since evolved from the point this picture was taken.
Personality: Kenneth is generally a quiet and somewhat shy and apprehensive person, especially when dealing with people he is unfamiliar with or when in situations he is uncertain of. After having witnessed the argument James, Jr. had with their father three years ago, which ultimately led to James, Jr. leaving home for those three years, Kenneth had increasingly been afflicted with apprehension and hesitation especially when it comes to dealing with their father. Having never been the social butterfly as his brother is, Kenneth never found an outlet for the uneasiness he has around his father and tends to give mono- or limited-syllabic responses when directly confronting his father; unfortunately, this sometimes bleeds over when dealing with people who are not his father, as well.
He looks up to his older brother, almost adores him, and secretly wants to be as outgoing and exciting as him, but has a difficult time expressing himself to others and is often indecisive on many matters. As a result of these unconscious tendencies, other people tend to view him as being either uncaring or disinterested in many things. Only his older brother, having grown up with him, realizes Kenneth's true personality and encourages his attempts at being more open with others, but does not force it if he cannot.
Regardless of his inherent introverted behavior, Kenneth is and has always been very studious and inquisitive. His mother being a school teacher all of his life is definitely a boon for his desire to learn new things. He simply loves learning about things that are new to him, especially knowledge relating to pokémon. As Kenneth grew up around his mother's pokémon, he has some experience with actual pokémon, though limited they may be, but he is vastly ignorant of the motions of battling and training pokémon beyond the rules of the League and everything he has learned in school and his books.
Despite being apprehensive about the physical nature of going on a pokémon trainer journey, he realizes that there is only so much you can learn about pokémon through reading books or other forms of media, studying in a classroom or what his father does regarding research on technology as it relates to pokémon. He may be worried about what going on this adventure will mean to him, or other experiences he may have along the way, he is comforted by the fact that his brother will travel alongside him.
Family: James Vale, Sr. - 48 years old. He is Kenneth's father. James, Sr. is the middle child of four brothers and sisters. He was born and raised in Celadon City in the Kanto region. He commutes to work in Saffron City as a researcher for Silph Co. Three years ago, he was one of the hostages during the Team Rocket takeover of the Silph Co. building. He is typically a worrywart for the well-being of his children, and sometimes takes certain matters of their well-being to the extreme. He was very reluctant in permitting his youngest son, Kenneth, in starting his pokémon trainer journey (and even held him back from starting a whole year), but was eventually placated by his wife and older son on the condition that Kenneth start his journey with James, Jr. as his guide. James' father, David Vale passed away of a heart attack when Kenneth was 7 and James, Jr. was 9. His mother, Laura Vale (nee Kingston) currently lives in their family home in Celadon City, while his older sister, Stephanie Vale (unmarried - 53) takes care of her. His other brothers and sisters, Larry Vale (51), Lucy Stellar (nee Vale - 47) and Timothy Vale (43), live outside of Celadon City.
Marylene Vale (née Sturgeon) - 42 years old. She is Kenneth's mother. Marylene was an only child growing up. She was raised in Cerulean City in the Kanto region, but met James on her pokémon trainer journey when she was in her 20s. When Marylene retired from her traveling, she continued her education at the Pokémon University in Saffron City focusing on childhood education and currently works as a teacher at a local school in Celadon City teaching children on pokémon and other basic life skills. Even though she has since retired being a pokémon trainer, Marylene still has with her her main pokémon team; though, they have aged quite a bit in the twenty or so years since she last was an active trainer, you can expect that she would still be quite the force to contend with if she became someone's antagonist. Both of Marylene's parents -- Joseph and Michelle Sturgeon (nee Waters) currently reside in their family home in Cerulean City.
James Vale, Jr. - 14 years old. He is Kenneth's older brother and named after their father, but prefers to be called "Jim" or "Jimmy" to not be his "father's son" but to simply be his own person, instead. James, Jr. started his pokémon trainer journey at the customary age of eleven (the same year that Team Rocket took over Silph Co.), but after the invasion of Team Rocket in Silph Co., his father forbade him from continuing on his journey, stating that it was too dangerous with Team Rocket's incessant attacks around the Kanto region. James, Jr. rejected this and ran away from home to continue on his journey without his father's permission. He remained away from home for almost a full three years, and only returned home when he realized his father had forbade Kenneth from starting his pokémon trainer journey the year prior. When he returned home, he and his mother placated his father in permitting Kenneth in starting his journey under the condition that James, Jr. travel along with him.
History: Kenneth was born and raised in Celadon City in the Kanto region. He is the youngest of two sons of a pokémon researcher who works for Silph Co. (his father, James) and a school teacher (his mother, Marylene). He was never the most athletic person growing up, but he always tried to keep up with his older brother, nonetheless.
Goals: Kenneth does not particularly have any specific goals in mind as he goes on his journey. He will be following a lot of advice from his older brother and does believe that whatever goals his brother has for him are generally good goals to follow.
The first priority is to travel the Johto region with his older brother, capture pokémon, train them under the guidance of his brother, and most importantly, have fun while doing that. He does know that his older brother does want him to aim for him taking on the Pokémon League challenge, staring by challenging and ultimately defeating the gym leaders of each major city in the region. Kenneth, however, is not too confident of his brother's plan, but is willing to go along with it as he agrees that generally it is a good thing. Then, later, when the Indigo Plateau opens for that year, he will take part in the tournament.
Kenneth's, main interest, however, is centered primarily around learning about pokémon, more than what he can simply learn about them from books or stories he has heard from him mother and others who had been on their own journeys in the past. He does not know if he is confident enough to take on this challenge in its entirety, but if battling will advance his understanding of pokémon in the process, he is willing to go along with it.
How did you find us?: An advert on an RP board that I was a member of several years ago. The advert was posted earlier this year, but the RP board had been inactive for several years. I only visited on the off chance that something interesting may happen, and I noticed this advert on the site... so I followed the link.
Application completed: Yes, I will be adding more to the history as the RP goes on, but for now, I believe this application is suitable enough to be considered "complete".
Also, just a little side note, my favorite pokémon is a Cubone, and the fact that its Alolan form is part ghost time is great and very fitting to its lore.
