Let The Steam Flow [Previous Page] x~ || [First ◘ Page] || ~>[Next page] Page 1
It was morning, and the soft greys and browns from the room painted a calming atmosphere, yet rustic. I was lying on my old cotton spring mattress bed. My eyes were closed, and I decided that I was feeling a bit to lazy to get up that morning. None the less, I heard the bell whistle, and if I didn't get up then, I would be late for work.
I slid off my bed purposefully, leaving my blanket on the floor for a moment before standing up and putting it away. I had to get a quick wash in before I left my humble abode, so I quickly whent to the sink and turned it on. Letting the water flow for a moment so I could splash myself with warm water. I quickly looked up at the mirror. My eyes the bright ruby red, and my reptilion skin a dusty orange. I frowned for a moment, splashed my face, and went to grab my clothes for work.
As soon as I threw the goggles on my head, the red handkerchief around my neck, and the satchel around my shoulder I pushed open the old wooden door, heading out into the world. The home I knew as Octu City. I would step out and close the door with the key that I pulled out of my satchel, so the door was locked and no one would break in. I turned around to remember and reminisce on how civilization has grown with the amount of tall buildings we had in the area. I did this for a minute while walking till I was interrupted.
For a split moment I thought it was my partner greeting me for the morning, his usual Hi-ho was ringing in my ears before the stranger pokemon had disrupted my thoughts, and my veiw. It was a Buizel, presumably male, with a rather small for it's size zubat on it's head. The buizel was wearing the same handkerchief goggles, and satchel as I was, so I assumed he was from the same company, but it must have been his first day as he was also wearing a shortened brown cloak that went to his elbo's. the zubat on his head had the handkerchief as well, but it looked like he was to small to wear the goggles or carry the satchel. That's when I noticed the buizel was doing it for him.
"New on the job?" I asked the buizel, already knowing the answer. I remember my first day wasn't exactly the easiest. I tried wearing my blue scarf and they almost burned it. I imagine they would do the same to the poor buizel. As if they had some decency around here it would go all out better. None the less the buizel didn't react poorly to my question. I imagine that he would enjoy the extra company on the way there anyway. "What department are you in?" I added, so I knew were to find this fella later if need be.
The zubat seemed to mumble about after my questions. I couldn't quite hear what he was saying, but he was probably saying something rude either way, the buizel spoke up before I could decipher it. "Yeah! How'd ya guess?" he seemed excited for the job, and quite frankly I didn't blame him for it. It wasn't every day that you were allowed to have one with the way the war was going on and about. "Department-B5, and the names Thomas Berry, and this is my good friend Ezef Crobat." He didn't hesitate on the introductions at all.
I decided it might be a good idea to warn him about his cloak, I didn't want his heart to be broken after all, but first I should introduce myself I suppose. It is rude not to after he gave me his own name. "Nice to meet you Berry," I learned quite early on around here not to call people by there first name unless they want you to. "and you to Crobat," the zubat grimaced when I said that name, and it made me sweat a little. "I'm Kasai Noma, you can call me Kasai. I should warn you before you go to your first job. You should put that cloak in one of the satchels, they'll burn it if they see you possess it on the job. The rule is only work clothes." [Previous Page] x~ || [First ◘ Page] || ~>[Next page]

Page 2 Thomas smiled wide for a moment, almost as if he had a good reason to wear the cloak, and get away with it, but before I could test my suspicions his face turned away from me and he looked to the ground. His face was red with embarrassment. It appeared that he didn't want to remove it for personal reasons rather then the ideal he had a good reason to wear the apparel. He was calm, but wouldn't do as I said, and we were still walking towards the work place. "Okay." He finaly gave in, and I watched as he removed the rope clasp that kept the clothe enclosed. I expected to see something he didn't want anyone to see. Perhaps he had a huge scar, or maybe he was missing his inner-tube? I was so desperately curious to know what his secret was that by the time he took it off I realized that all my excitement was for nothing. He was normal. He quickly stuffed it into one of the satchels around his shoulder. I quickly analyzed that it was the one that belonged to Ezef, as it had his goggles tied to the side of it. I watched intently as he went back to my gaze, but I was still stuck on the fact that they gave a zubat goggles. Even for this line of work. I was eye to eye with Thomas however, still thinking of the expressions that zubats make. Usually they show huge emotion through the ears and mouth due to the lack of eyes, and they usually kept them both wide and open. The one that was sitting on Thomas's head, Ezef, was expressionless. His mouth was closed and almost between a striaght line of defiance, and a frown of disgust. and it wasn't long before I was notified of this. THWACK! I had ran into the light-pole that sat in front of our work building. I looked up at it rubbing my face in a bit of pain, stepping back, and feeling as if the object was mocking me. I distinctly remember my partner constantly running into this pole every morning. He would then just rub his face smile, and then laugh at what he had done. I, however, was furious that I made the same mistake. "Are you Okay?" I heard the soft tone of the rookie behind me, and it felt like I realized who I really was when I hit this pole. I remembered a bit of my past, and how my friend hit this pole every time we came here. So what exactly was it that made me think this. "Hey.. um... Kasai was it? Do you have any advice before I head out to the steamers?" He mentioned where he worked. Department B5 of the steamers. Water type pokemon work there to keep the engines cool, and I'm generally not allowed back there. So I really didn't know what to say to him about the place. I rubbed my face again, and looked him in the eyes. "I'm fine... You'll do fine, just.... don't call anyone by there first name unless they ask you to." That's all the advice I could give. It was time to pack into my workplace. With that out of the way, Thomas headed out on the east road towards the Steamers building. A delighted look was on his face as he waved goodbye to me. Ezef was nuetral, and gave no reaction to me whatsoever. I was beginning to think he was some sort of doll. I needed to head west. My job was at the coal burning Department. Page 3 I started to focus on my work duties for this day. What I would need to do is important and vital to make sure everyone gets there fair share. Most 'mon that work here don't even know what there working on. The company has always been tightly known for keeping it's secrets. Especially from it's customers. I always have had a strong belief that what we did here wasn't all that bad as it provided homes, work, and pay to those who needed it, but all I do is burn coal. Set the fire for those who do know what's going on. I looked onward, supposing I should stop by the entry station to pull my card out so they know I'm here, and they pay me for my work. I guess I just wanted to make sure my partner was okay as I didn't see him this morning, then I'll go sign in. I found myself walking along the stone path that led from the entrance to the Coal Burner's district. My mind was a bit lost in who I was and what I was doing here. Wake up, eat, go to work.... scratch that, wake up, go to work, come home, eat, sleep, repeat the process. I haven't even been getting enough sleep with these hours and it was starting to drive me insane, but, it gave me a purpose in life. If I didn't work here. I would be able to work anywere else. Still I rather would be a gaurd, squire, or even just a merchant. Anything to get out of this steam driven town. I wanted to take someone with me. After that thought, I was brought back to reality again, but this time, it wasn't a pole, or rather anything hitting my face. "Ha-Ho~" The musical tone ringing in my ears as I looked ahead of me, but saw nothing. Was it that I was hearing things perhaps? No, I definately heard my partner, so I took a look down and saw a pikachu in the grass next to the building. Relaxing. He quickly got up to his feet, and I suddenly realized he was covered in soot. Was he working all night again? possibly. He needed the money, and they gave him the time. The question was, was if he was waiting for me out here, or if he was taking a short nap. "So did you sign in?" His glimmering face didn't catch a sign of weakness, tiredness, or any of the sort. I was surprised that he could even stand. The job was easy for fire type pokemon such as myself as he didn't need to shake the coal, or drag it over. We were required to breath fire into the furnace to keep it warm. It was obvious by now he was waiting for me as he always did. I quivered a bit as my face still pained from the earlier experience. Was there still a mark from hitting the pole? "Um... no, I'll go do that real quick, I just..." I quickly turned around before My partner was able to respond to my reaction in itself. I don't know what came over me, but I felt like I had to hurry away from Pik, and head to the entrance for sign in. I got to the front door much faster then it took me to find my friend. I must have ran all the way here? I found myself staring at the old looking mechanical gate. I went to touch it lightly, and gears began to turn. The door found itself opening before me and I took a moment to look up above the front desk where the logo sat. Silph Company Below the logo was the receptionist. A proudly standing Furret with a dazzling cap, of coarse with the company logo and a pretty ribbon on it. Also the goggles, and the company red hankerchief. The receptionist was pretty much just to be a pretty face in front of the building and not much more then that. Somewhat of a guide and a desquise all at the same time. Well, it all depends on your view of the place.

Page 4 I was distracted for a moment by her beautiful soft face. She had a very soft coat and soft brown eyes, and seemed to be focused with her work, talking to people who were in line at the front desk. There were some common pokemon from around here. Mostly fire type pokemon. Some normal, and some flying. They were all probably here to apply for a job here or there. At least it seemed that was what most people do these days. I glanced up at the clock and realized cause I stopped and visited with my friend, along with the piddly farting I've been doing since this morning, I was most certainly late for my job. Not that anybody would care to bother me about it. I was to important to them for them to fire me or throw me to the side. None the less I did need to hurry a bit. Finding myself inside the cooled building, I turned to see where the check in board was. There on the right hand wall was a board with slots on them. In each slot carried a colored card, and it was all organized by department. Since I was In department A, my card would be colored red, and would be in the slot 75 along with all my other co-workers. I stood there finding myself not wanting to come into work today. I was already thirty minutes late, but I didn't want to continue in these affairs. None the less I bit the inside of my lip and stepped forward towards the boxes, when something caught my eye. I stopped slightly turned back to the reception desk, and caught it with just a glance. All the pokemon that were there before weren't there anymore. Could I just have been daydreaming all this time or? no the clock hasn't changed so... Wait. There was one pokemon still standing there, or rather replacing the others as I didn't see him there before. I know I would have noticed him as he was blue. I turned my head to the floor, feeling as if I shouldn't have looked up at all, but something compelled me to look back up again. So I did. It was definately real, and I more then definately heard of this character before. A greninja stood tall in front of the reception desk, a red scarf wrapped around his neck, and a scar barely viable on his lip. He was looking over at me, and I knew I was being watched. An adventurer known to protect the kingdom without any reward. He was rumored to be magical and able to stop time itself. He also has huge tales of protecting the princess and recruiting random strangers. Of coarse these were all just rumors, and I never really believed he was even real, but that scar on his lip told me otherwise. This man was known as- "Miro..." I didn't realize I let out such a gasp of his name, but this didn't seem to phase him or make him react in anyway. He just stood there looking at me quietly. He was staring, and the time on the clock was ticking. Could I be frozen in fear, or aw? I wasn't sure what to do in the situation, but keeping my cool was out of the question. He finally tipped his head after a while of silence and staring. His quiet blinking expression gave me worry, but none the less, it was refreshing to know that he wasn't a statue or anything. I smiled in response, and then did a quick apologetic bow. "I'm so sorry Maso, I didn't mean to call you by-" I found that I was interupted by something, a pat on the head. There was a webbed hand on my head, rubbing back and forth. When I looked up, I saw what I presumed to be Miro, eyes closed with a happy look on his face. Was he amused by me or something. Did I mistake this Greninja for someone he was not. "Please young squire, call me Miro Senpai." I was a bit confused on the terminology for a moment. I didn't think he understood what the term Senpai even meant. and when he called me Squire, I wasn't sure if he was even talking to me. Perhaps he was the one confusing me with someone else? Did he think I was his student or was he just trying to please me for calling him a legendary hero. I wasn't sure anymore, and was quite confused.

Page 5 His eyes were soft, gentle, and he had a cunning look on his face. Miro's hand was still on my head, but he did eventually release it from me. Not that I could have just stepped backwards, but I was frozen in shock. I had a closer look at the fella this time. He was standing proudly in front of me. "You are a squire aren't you?" I blinked for a moment. Looking up at him as he spoke. I couldn't see his mouth move but I knew it was based on the scarf shifting about. His voice seemed- to good to be true, especially with the rumors about his lost tongue. I expected to be a bit of a slur or slang of some sort. Either way, responding was to be my next action. "No. I work here. The name's Noma, Kassi." I formally presented myself, and like always, I'd prefer them to call me by my first name. "Please call me Kasai, Miro." I was still shocked, and unable to move very quickly to respond. I quickly gave a small bow to Miro. Closing my eyes, and tried to be respectful to him as he did state who he was to me. "Hm." I heard him softly pondering something while my eyes were clothes. I wasn't quite sure what he was thinking of, or what he was about to say, but I found myself stuck in the position of bowing with my eyes closed. It wasn't till a moment of silence that I decided to look up at him again. I opened my eyes, and, he was gone. Everything was as it was before he arrived. Creepy. I suppose that was to be expected. A strange feeling came over me though. As the noises of the people in line became louder I noticed that time was back to the way it was before I met Miro. Did he really stop time? Not possible for any pokemon but maybe perhaps a legendary. Dialga was it? I didn't keep up on my mythology or culture up that much. Reading wasn't my forte I suppose. I had noticed that there was a wingul in the line with a blue satchel around him and a blue cap on his head. The delivery man was here? well I imagine it was mail for some higher up so I didn't bother. I turned to look back over to the clock, and check in bored. Everything there was normal. No changes, not even much in time. I was still late, and I was still disoriented. I walked up to it and sift through the cards, pulling mine out and writing down the time and date on it, Then clicking it into the box that read the card. Click It had read my card and I was to put it back in the correct box. As I sifted through the cards I noticed that Piks still had yesterday's date on it and didn't have the sign out date filled out. I frowned, and put my card away, wondering how long my friend has been putting over twelve hours into the business. I never really asked him why he did this at all. Nor did he ever ask me I suppose. I wanted to ponder about this for a bit, but I needed to head to work as soon as possible, and that would mean that I needed to turn away and head out the door. So I did. As I turned, I looked over to the reception desk to watch the mon's disperse in room for the mailman, and I put my hand softly on the iron door. "Mail for Noma Kasai!" The wingull cawed, and I froze. Who would send me mail? I knew nobody other then Pik personaly, and my family wouldn't even dare use the Pelipper mail system. Perhaps it was an invitation due to my hard work? I was begining to feel like I met enough people today already. Even so, I quickly turned around and walked up to the wingull who had the mail in his hand. "Are you Noma?" I stood there in front of him quietly rummaging through my work bag to pull out my ID, and as soon as I did, I showed it to the pokemon with the mail. "Yes. Please call me Kasai." After he thoroughly examined the Identification card I put it back in my bag where it belonged. I then waited for the wingull to present me with his tablet so I could sign for my mail. Despite it being just a card.

Page 6 The wingull finally pulled out the tablet that I was supposed to sighn and reffered to the grey square with his wing. "Place your hand there, and remove it gently." he said. I have done this before. It was when I got the job at the company. Although as a coal worker was a bit unreasonable for me, I inclined to sign back then, so signing now wouldn't be a problem. I Placed my hand on the tablet softly, then removed it. He then gave me the letter, it was sealed with white wax, and in the simbol of a Arcanine... Wait a minute. Isn't this a letter from the knights table? Yes it definately was. As I flipped the letter over the address to the castle was clearly written there. I wondered what was so important that they would mail a random coal worker? In the end I just stuffed the letter in my pocket and ran out the door. Outside Pik was standing at the entrance gate. It looked like he was waiting for me out here. "Your risking your job." I shouted outward, but I don't think he cared. After all, he hadn't signed out yet from yesterday, and for a moment I could see how tired he was on his face. "You should get some rest." I said as I finally caught up to him, but I knew he would deny needing sleep even if he stayed up for three days in a row. "I'm fine." He said cheerfully, and then continued to walk with me back to the workplace. I was astonished how quickly he put on the mask. "Anyway, what took you so long? I was sent out to get you because everyone was worried. Especially since the boss caught your key card number was just registered." I wanted to tell him, but I doubt he would believe me. After all, he was the one who would deny any belief in the man at all when I brought him up. No, it was more like he was careful about his beliefs and choices in life. Besides, I had a good feeling time was stopped, so I would tell the truth, just not everything that happened. "I got distracted by the receptionist, fumbled with the cards, and had to retrieve some mail from the Pelipper service." I replied bluntly, and that seemed to get the reaction from Pik I was looking for. He was happy that I told him the truth, as I know that if I lied, he would give me a stern look. "Well, the boss is mad at you, so you should go straight to his office." Pik mentined this, but I was sure I was just called to the office and no one other then Pik said he was mad at me. No matter what the reason, I had no choice but to seperate from my friend to confront the head of the coal company. I stepped into the building with pick, then waved goodbye to him as I headed strieght to the Boss's office. The door had some sort of lable on it. Rose Fire. That was the name of our boss, but I suppose no one has met her before unless they were called in. I knew what pokemon she was, but she never seemed to check up on us. Her assistant would however. I went to knock on the door, giving a gulp as I did. "Come in." She spoke out. Her voice being of a proud being. She seemed to not hesitate about letting me in either. I guess the door was unlocked. Then why did her assistant always carry a key to the place? I should think about it now however. Inside I go. I stepped inside, and saw her sitting at a desk filling out paperwork. I wonder how she does it with those paws? well she did seem to carry a strange jewel around her neck, and she didn't have to wear the company clothing. I simply smiled and waited for it all to go well. "Good morning Fire." I realized her last name was my first when I said that. None the matter, names were commonly the same around the place, but it did make me gulp as if to wonder if I said her name wrong. She responded without hesitation. "Good morning Kasai... or should I say squire?" She asked that same question again and I wasn't sure why? was I called onto the front lines? don't I get a choice in the matter? well either way she continued. "Please sit down. We need to talk." And with that I sat down in huge hopes I wasn't in trouble.

Page 7 While I embraced myself, I sat there quietly, almost twiddling my thumbs. I was staring at her quietly as the clock ticked along. In fact that's all I could hear. Tick. Tick. Tick. Not even the breathing of the pokemon in front of me. It had to be serious, but why was she so quiet. There was tension and it was getting to me. I was sure I was in trouble, but I didn't do anything wrong. "WELL!" She shouted out at me, making me nearly leap back, except since I was sitting down, the seat rocked back as I leaned back into it. As the seat leaned back forward the sound of the legs slamming against the floor. "are you a Squire?" She asked in a calming yet stern voice. It sent chills down my spine. At that point I heard a sort of electrical noise. A spark perhaps is what the noise was. It could have been my imagination, but I was sure that my friend was leaning against the door. I turned my head to look, but I couldn't see anything due to the lack of a clear window on the door. I frowned for a moment and then turned my head back to my boss. "I..." I needed to respond to her but I found myself frozen a bit in fear, and confusion. I remembered the pokemon who called me squire before. It was the legendary Miro. I frowned for a moment and looked over to my satchel. It struck me for a moment about the letter that the wingull gave me. It's possible that the letter was simply a request to become a knight. But that would mean I would have to be in contact with a knight of the castle. I reached down and pulled the satchel open to see what was inside. There was the letter sitting inside the bag, the same one as before. I reached in and pulled it out. Opening the letter, I pulled the edges of the envelope up a bit and looked at the seal. The white, almost cream color was stretching a bit, and the arcanine symbol began to deform slightly. I finally pulled it open, and found that Fire was staring me down as I did so. I officially pulled the paper out to read the letter. At the top of it seemed to be a formal writing that wasn't readable but very pretty. I looked below that and there was a good paragraph or three really. Queen AcapellaHello Dear Kasai Noma. You have been noticed a lot lately. The way you help people, the way you talk to people, and how you treat people. The glimmer in your eyes when someone is happy, the hard work you put in, and most importantly. Your strength and loyalty. Loyalty to the Silph Company. Loyalty to your people. Loyalty to your friends.
Loyalty is important in this comunity. It is important to the Monarchy, and those who are strong. Loyalty means staying to those who you trust in, who you care about, and the things that are close to you. The loyalty you show is shown in every choice you do and say. So I have something important to ask of you.
I must wrap this up quickly as I am a busy person. You have a recomendation. A recomendation by one of our best men. You may know him as the Legendary Miro. He has been watching you. Letting us know about you, and having a lot of faith in you. You are requested to bedcome his squire. His first, and his only squire. Of coarse, this is if you accept his invitation. If you have any questions come to the castle with this letter.
Queen Acapella I stared at it for some time, with so many questions. I knew I could go after work, but I couldn't just quit right now. So I knew that I was going to be stared down, stared down till I answered her. "I.... won't know until I figure things out... and I wont till after work." I felt so hesitant about it all, scared she would yell at me for not giving her a direct answer. I found myself shoving the letter back into my satchel.
