After what seemed like staying in Violet City for a long time, and traversing through the Union Cave for some amount of time, Alex found himself finally in the bright sunshine of Azalea Town. He rested himself for a day, and also used the second day that he had arrived in the city to explore what food and cuisine and local culture this area have to offer. He found out that this area was in close proximity to the Ilex Forest, where bug type Pokemon and grass type Pokemon frequent there. In addition, with the close proximity, the small town and the local forest shared a rich nutritious soil that benefited plant growth in the area. Some local citizens planted various fruits and vegetables, and some even get into the whole herbs-and-farm formality where the individual grow their own spices and experiment with cooking. He would have to see if a local restaurant here have interesting noodles for him to try out.
Though before he would do that, he have one important task in this city. Being a partial bug-type enthusiast and trainer, he thought that the first thing to do in Azalea, after resting from the long walk in Union Cave, was to challenge the gym leader. He examined his choices carefully from his party and his box, and decided to fight the gym leader in an all-out bug versus bug battle. There could be nothing wrong with that, sizing up who would be the better bug trainer. Or even, competing who would be the smarter trainer of the two. Thinking of the excitement, he remembered that he fought the last gym leader, Falkner, with a grass type Pokemon!
He swapped out some Pokeballs and proceeded into the gym, with a confidence in his face that was different from other trainers. A confidence that he could win a bug type gym without resorting to flying or fire or rock type Pokemon. Although he had a partial bug/flying Pokemon, that would still be counted as a bug.
Alex pushed the doors open and walked into the gym. The environment was basically an indoor glasshouse but without a lot of glass, and instead a mix of warm air, humidity, and healthy green grass and giant trees. He stood by the challenger's platform and shouted loudly, on top of his lung, "Is the Gym Leader here? I am Alex and I would like to challenge the gym leader. I train bug type Pokemon myself too, and I would like to win this gym with just my bug types. How does that sound?"

Bugsy has been in the back of the gym feeding some buy type Pokemon that he was watching that belonged to one of his friends when Alex walked into the gym and had not even realized a challenger had entered the gym until Alex began to speak. As Bugsy turned around to see his challenger he was quite excited to hear the challenger would be using Bug type Pokemon as they were his favorite. Few challengers would bother to use a single Bug type when they battled him mostly due to the usual weak performance the type suffered from. Bugsy could not contain his excitement as he began to speak. " Welcome Alex I am the gym leader Bugsy. I am a huge fan of bug types myself so I am really looking forward to our battle."As Bugsy grabbed his first Pokeball he threw it to the ground in front of him and out of it came a cocoon like Pokemon that lie nearly motionless in front of him. Bugsy was well aware that a Pokemon such as his Metapod were not usually seen as a good Pokemon but he hoped to someday change that. For the time being however Metapod would be his first choice. As Bugsy looked down at his bug Pokemon the cocoon did not even move an inch as it just looked over at Alex likely wondering what Pokemon he would use. Metapod was relieved to battle something other than a fire type for once but the mystery of Alex's choice of Pokemon still caused the bug to stay cautious in hopes of taking advantage of it's high defense. " I look forward to seeing which Pokemon you will use. I am an encyclopedia when it comes to knowledge of bug types so I do hope to see which bug types you will be using. Metapod here looks relieved as well after all the fire types we have battled over time. Now challenger which Pokemon will you be using first? He asked as he waited for Alex to respond. Bugsy accepts your challenge. He sends out his level 18 Metapod.

Alex's eyes shot a glare when he saw the bug type gym leader was using a Metapod to start. An intermediate evolution bug type Pokemon, and also a Pokemon that probably would be better evolving and raised for its full potential. "If you're using a quite-sturdy-looking Metapod," he commented and also began the battle as he held a Pokeball on his hand, "then I will use Beautifly. Go, Casilk!"
Out from the Pokeball was another bug type Pokemon, but with full-fledged wings and slightly abnormal coloration from normal Beautiflies. The Beautifly fluttered gracefully, trying to see if Bugsy was a man or a woman before he would try flirting. However, the bug quickly figured that the opponent human was indeed a male, and then Beautifly shifted his attention on the battle, which would be a thick emerald hide of a pupa.
"So, I just said that I will use bug type Pokemon, and I didn't say what moves they would use. Alright Casilk, go for a Gust!" the trainer ordered as he began his next move. The bug type hummed as he got the order, and then began flapping his wings rapidly to create a windy terror for the opponent. Alex watched happily as he wondered what other bug types the opponent has.

Bugsy dipped his head to acknowledge Alex's first choice in Pokemon. It was possible that there was a pang of envy in his gaze at the shiny butterfly, but it couldn't be helped. Bugsy was quite happy with the Pokemon that he had, and even though Alex didn't seem happy with Bugsy's first choice, the battle would progress as planned. Alex seemed confident to only use Bug Pokemon against him, which was a rare occurrence indeed. The last challenger to attempt such a feat didn't want to use a fire type, but Bugsy's Pokemon team had forced her hand. Hopefully Alex would be able to stick to it. It'd make it quite interesting indeed.
"Well i'm excited either way. That's a stunning Beautifly you have! Such beautiful coloration, I haven't seen anything like it." As Alex mentioned the move he'd use, Bugsy chuckled. "I'd be a pretty bad expert on bug Pokemon if I didn't know that Beautifly could use flying moves. I'm well aware what you're doing." Bugsy switched his bug catching net from one shoulder to the other. "Metapod! Let's go in for a Tackle. Let's see what this Beautifly can do."
As Casilk fluttered his wings, a small gust of air formed and hurtled towards the tanky bug Pokemon. It seemed as though it would knock out the poor bug, but Metapod seemed to hang on by the skin of it's teeth. "Good job, girl! You see? Isn't Metapod just fantastic? I'm sure you thought you were going to knock her out in one hit. Many are quite dissapointed in the end. Now go in for that tackle." Bugsy smiled, watching his Metapod slowly hop towards Casilk. It's hard body slammed into Casilk. It didn't do much damage. The impressive feat was Metapod simply surviving. She wasn't the damage dealer that was for sure. Alex smiled as he listened to he bug expert Bugsy complimented his bug. (Therefore proceed to use the word/syllable "bug" three times in one sentence.) He replied politely, albeit nervously with a gym leader as he didn't expect his Pokemon to be complimented, "Thank you. I actually caught this Wurmple a while back, with a freshly evolved Dustox. Though I didn't know when I first started that, you shouldn't use a flying type Pokemon out in the open to look for a bug type Pokemon. The bugs get scared, especially the small ones. " He chuckled to himself, as Bugsy's compliment made him remember how he first started his journey and how he caught the Pokemon. Though different from the gym leader, Alex don't study Pokemon for their life cycles or behaviors. The young trainer was aspiring to be a doctor, and so he would study bug type Pokemon for topics like how to treat humans a bug bite, a bug scratch injury or wound, or poisoning by a bug Pokemon. When Bugsy acknowledged that he knew what Alex was doing, he murmured a "Good." response, and continued to watch the battle as it unfolded. Indeed as he had planned, the Gust attack would either faint or knock a huge chunk of health out of the Metapod. Unfortunately in a way, Alex's battle got the result of the latter, even though he would pretty much preferred to see the opponent knocked out cold from the Gust. Oh well. Alex politely (subconsciously reluctantly to be polite) responded, "Well, your Metapod is quite sturdy. I don't expect my Beautifly's Gust to knock out your Metapod. I mean I wish it would, but I also planned in case it wouldn't." He spoke analytically, "If your Metapod held on, then I will just have to use one more turn, and that was also expected."He stopped, moving his head between the Beautlfly and the Metapod, as if having one more look of the Metapod. Then, he ordered his bug Pokemon to do the same thing in return. "Casilk, show the Metapod your Tackle as well!"The Beautifly nodded, and then yelled a "Beaau!" in response. Next, the flying bug fluttered his wings as he flew closer and closer to the Metapod. Alex kept his head straight, watching the battle with his full attention, even though his mind was onto the next Pokemons that Bugsy would use. He was watching and thinking. OOC: 400 words. Tackle

"Metapod, use Bug-" However, before Bugsy could call out his attack for the Metapod, the bug pokemon was just barely hanging on and he knew that his pokemon was in trouble. Bugsy knew that it'd be considered a huge miracle for him to survive the next attack. The beatifly was the one that went first this round as he hoped that his metapod could survive the attack. It was too late now to change things. Alex's Casailk heard the command from its trainer almost instantly. Fluttering his wings, the casilk flew with power but was also being careful not to damage or hurt itself. As the pokemon flew forward, it slammed itself into the hard shell that belonged to the Metapod. The pokemon cried out in pain as its sturdy body prevented it from falling over but Bugsy could tell that his pokemon had suffered enough, there was one pokemon down and two more to go. He hoped that Kakuna or Sycther would be able to give Alex a run for his money. "no! There went one of my pokemon! Metapod take a rest you deserve it after that battle!" He said with a bit of sadness in his voice as he sent the pokemon into its ball. Now, it was time to get serious as he took out a pokeball that belonged to another bug pokemon of his. "Let's go, Kakuna!" He called out as he sent the pokeball flying into the air. As the pokemon was released, the golden cocoon pokemon appeared, where Metapod once stood. Kakuna's dome shaped head held two pericing black eyes that would later belong to a Beedril once it fully evolved. But for now, it seemed just fine in being a Kakuna and would wait patiently for that day when it changed into its final form. Luckily bug pokemon evolved much earlier than most pokemon, so they were easy to become more powerful and learn new moves faster than normal pokemon. "I know Kakuna might not seem much, but she's a lot different than the metapod, from earlier. So I hope you're in for a surprise this time." He said showing confidence still, since it looked like it hadn't faded when his metapod had fainted. In fact, things were just only starting for this battle between him and Alex. Battle

Watching his flying bug retaliating with a more powerful Tackle, Ales was impressed with his Pokemon's attack hitting the opponent. The sturdy Metapod was no more in the battle, and he lit a smile on his face, as he defeated one opponent so far. "Good Job, Casilk! You take a rest too, and return!" the challenger spoke after the gym leader, returning the Beautifly right after the Metapod was called back.
Next, Alex watched how a Kakuna had replaced the Metapod, where instead of fighting a green cocoon Pokemon, he would be fighting a yellow one instead. He shrugged at the sight of another cocoon, and dug through his pocket for another Pokeball to release for the fray. "If you're using Kakuna, then I will use... this Pokemon," he responded and tossed out a Pokeball. "Go, Spiden! Start off with a Shadow Sneak on the Kakuna!'
Out from the sphere, a green and yellow bug Pokemon appeared, almost camouflaging in the grassy field. The arachnid crawled a few steps to get used to the field, and then prepared for the battle. She clicker her mandibles together, hissing to the Kakuna to let it know that, she was ready for whatever the opponent was throwing at her.

Although his Metapod had been taken down, Bugsy was still in relatively good spirits. His Metapod had withstood a super effective attack, and he'd managed to show this trainer a thing or two about his bug Pokemon. Kakuna was up next. His secret weapon was usually next on his plate, but he figured that would be too forward for the other bug user. "I have to admit, it's rather odd staring down this battlefield. I mean, it isn't every day I meet another bug maniac like myself. It's a rare treat indeed, right Kakuna?" The bug shuddered in it's skin happily. It wasn't facing a Pidgeotto, Charmeleon or other fiery hazard. Life was good today.
The Spinarak seemed to be in very good health, and taken care of. It made Bugsy feel good to see others that took care of their Pokemon, especially bugs. He was used to staring at fiery dragons and nimble birds. Did he mention it was a rare treat? "That's a mighty fine Spinarak you've got there! Have you ever tried weaving with their silk? After the stickyness wears off - I usually use dust to fix that - it's a very good rope or woven cloth if you're good enough!" Geeking out a bit more about the battle, Bugsy had to pay attention to reel himself back into reality. "But enough with that. Kakuna! Let's show him we're no pushovers. Iron Defense!"
The defensive nature of his first two Pokemon were paramount. Kakuna's hide seemed to shimmer for a few moments before the lackluster yellow turned shiny with the hardening of the layers. Bugsy shifted his bug net to his other shoulder and smiled. "Good work. Let's see that Spinarak's attack!" Bugsy grinned, but he didn't 'see' anything. Spiden stuck to the shadows, sneaking towards the immovable Kakuna. It was like taking candy from a baby! As Spiden crept forward, all legs took care of where they were placed. As the spider lept forward, it bit down on the Kakuna, but was taken aback by the strength of the hide. "Oh that's just too bad, isn't it?" Bugsy grunted, watching his Kakuna barely take a scratch. "Well yes, I've read about Spinarak's silky web. The woven cloth you get from them makes good bandages or materials to clog blood or something," Alex replied, about to go off tangent on his Spinarak's compliment. "And thank you, she likes to crawl in dark places to sleep in." He added, smiling that the two were actually talking about bugs.
Then, he paid attention to the opponent's attack as his head began brewing up a storm to counter Bugsy's strategy. He fixed his eyes as the Kakuna glowed to improve defense temporarily, and he was taking mental notes when his Spinarak attacked with a Shadow Sneak. When the round was over, he folded his hands on his torso, and began looking very serious. Though the fact that this was Bugsy's second Pokemon also made him uneasy, and he still planned to win with only bug type Pokemon. Yet at the same time, he wanted to gloat in who's the better bug trainer.
"Well, I like to train grass types too, but they won't shine in this gym today," he commented casually. Then, after a really brief pause, he added a command for his Pokemon, "Well, now it won't be a bad thing if I just ignore your defensive entirely, right? Now Spiden, go for a Night Shade!"

So delighted Bugsy was to find a fellow bug maniac that he was tempted to quiz his challenger on all the Bug-types he owned, almost forgetting that this was a rather important battle. He was used to seeing all too common Fire, Flying and the occasional Rock type with the challengers that flocked to him, so to be pitting his carefully raised bugs against their kin was thrilling beyond belief. Spinarak alone was a special favourite of his, but he had yet to acquire one thanks to his duties in the gym. "This net is reinforced with silk I got from a friend's Spinarak. Makes it a lot less prone to getting holes in it!" Bugsy exclaimed, giving his net an affectionate look. He really needed to take a day off and use the net to bolster his collection of bugs.
"Let's change things up this round Kakuna. Try Bug Bite!" Bugsy instructed, deciding to shift into a more offense-based strategy. With both battlers sharing the same type, it would be hard dealing out damage, but Kakuna was limited with her moves unless he chose to evolve her. Buzzing in response, she hopped towards Spiden with a certain grace, closing the gap between them with a sudden lunge. Spiden wriggled as the uncomfortable sensation of sharp jaws biting into him increased, her flailing legs eventually connecting and knocking Kakuna back. With only her beady black eyes to go on, it was hard to tell Kakuna's expression, but she seemed almost smug as she hopped back to Bugsy.
Clicking her mandibles in an irritated manner, Spiden concentrated hard until an ominous purple aura edged with deep reds and yellows enveloped her. The ghastly aura floated out from her and made its way over to Kakuna, swirling around the cocoon and catching her in a mirage. Dredged up by Night Shade was a ferocious image of a Pidgeotto, talons outstretched and wings fanned out to their full width. It was a truly frightening image, one that sapped not only Kakuna's will to battle, but some of her strength too. "Interesting strategy! Not many people figure out how to bypass Iron Defense," Bugsy said, his gaze speculative as it alighted upon Spiden.

Alex kept his cheerful expression as he watched the battle continued. Sure, he had a plan to use bug type Pokemon only, but a doubtful part of him was wondering how successful he would be in this attempt. He narrowed his eyes as he watched the Kakuna hopped toward the Spinarak and used a Bug Bite attack. Even though he knew that both Pokemon were the same poison and bug dual types, he just wasn't sure how much power or offense his opponent's Pokemon have. It could be very possible that the Kakuna could take out Spiden with a bug bite.
"Thank you, Bugsy. I have my Spinarak keep the move in case she would fight some sturdy opponent. Or some Pokemon that Spiden could not hit with other moves. It's a nice move that pretty much only normal types resist that. Anyways, Spiden, use Night Shade again!" Alex went off tangent to BUgsy's compliment, as he was glad that his strategy was working now. Since it wasn't broke, he could keep on continuing attacking with Night Shade. Well, not him, but his Pokemon. Spiden clicked her mandibles again, hissing that she's still ready to handle whatever the Kakuna throws at her.

Listening to Alex as he spoke, Bugsy folded his arms and nodded with a smile stretching across his face. He always found it interesting to hear the strategies and ideas of passing trainers and Alex was no doubt a unique challenger. It wasn't often that Bugsy was able to face other Bug Pokemon and for this, he was grateful. But just because Alex trained a couple of his favourite Pokemon didn't mean that Bugsy was planning on holding back. Even if his Kakuna were to fall, his third and final line of defensive was something that caught many trainers off guard. A few flying moves or attacks that bypass defence were no match for that Pokemon, atleast, that was Bugsy's current line of thought. Clapping his hands together loudly, the young boy nodded his head. "I understand! That is a safe strategy! This is why I love Bug type Pokemon. They can learn a versatile range of moves just like any other Pokemon, I am glad there are others out there like myself who don't look down upon them!" His heart pounding against his chest, his adrenaline was certainly pumping.
Outstretching an arm in front of him, Bugsy was eager to see how this battle would turn out, in his loss or favour. "All we can do for now is whittle down your Pokemon with offensive moves, since my defence is pretty useless. Use Bug Bite, Kakuna!" A subtle click echoing from the cocoon Pokemon's body, it was Kakuna's way of acknowledging the order. Her seemingly immobile body jumping forward once again, the Pokemon approached the scuttling Spinarak, revealing a pair of hidden fangs and crunched down once again. A bit more mentally prepared, the Spinarak managed to wriggle itself away with relative ease and from underneath it's eight legged body, a shadow stretched across the ground. Emotionless eyes looking down, the Kakuna tried to hop away, in order to avoid an illusion similar to last time. However, the fear from the previous attack was still apparent in the Pokemon's heart and as soon as the shadow reached it's body the Kakuna flinched defensively. Feeling a sharp pain shoot across her body from the shadowy attack, to Bugsy, he was just happy his Pokemon was still standing.

"Yes, though I actually like bug types not for their versatility, but for their perseverance to handle so many type disadvantages. Well, at least a pure bug type. It's quite aspiring, isn't it? Now, I cannot really believe that you really just have a Metapod and Kakuna. When I fought Falkner, his Pidgeotto gave me a hard time and I had to use Ivysaur to put it to sleep and drain it with leech seed, and then use my Dustox to attack with Confusion. The Pidgeotto knows Roost, which is a surprise. You too, should have a surprise, right?" Alex responded to Bugsy, as he seemingly reminiscent his entire Pokemon journey, or basically the key events, so far while fighting this gym battle. Then, he returned Bugsy's smile with his own, adding, "I guess we should finish Kakuna to find out. Alright, Spiden, Night Shade one more time!"
He looked down the field patiently at the Kakuna and Spinarak, as both Pokemon were of short stature. He pondered in his head, what would the next Pokemon that Bugsy would use, and how would he counter that. For now, he knew that he had won at least two of the gym leader's Pokemon. Spiden crawled as she zoned in, making a soft rustling sound that could rival the creepiness of her own shadow. She was glad to finish this battle with the Kakuna.

Hearing Alex speak about bugs once more had the young leader grinning and almost shaking his head, wanting to keep a clear mind for the battle but unable to resist the temptation to talk about his favourite type. "Bugs certainly are unique in their adaptability, whether it be against foes or their environment. We can study them all we want but in the end they can still surprise us!" Bugsy gushed, pausing to take a breath and allow Alex to finish speaking. Interest sparked in his eyes; not many passing trainers spoke of Falkner being a challenge. Most seemed to breeze by the Flying-type leader, and sometimes sweep Bugsy himself, without batting an eye. He'd have to tell his friend about this later, Bugsy mused. Maybe it would perk Falkner up knowing he'd made a distinct impression on at least one former challenger.
"Of course I have a surprise," he replied in a scandalized tone, almost shocked to hear such a question. "You'll just have to wait and see it. Kakuna, another Bug Bite!" Bugsy continued, watching her struggle to hop forwards with her energy at an all time low. Resilient to the last, Kakuna made the arduous trip over to Spiden and fell upon her with hidden teeth once more, throwing the last of her strength into the attack. Sensing an opportunity with the cocoon so close, Spiden knocked Kakuna off with a quick flailing of her legs before launching her sinister Night Shade.
At such close quarters, it proved an effective method to seal Kakuna's fate, the cocoon wobbling dangerously before simply flopping over. Not a very dramatic scene, although the brief sadness visible on Bugsy's face spoke volumes as he returned the fallen bug to her ball for a rest. "You tried hard, my dear friend. But now... it's time," Bugsy all but murmured, taking out one final Poké Ball and staring at its sleek surface for a brief moment. Looking up at Alex, a wry smile touched the leader's lips as he let the ball fly.
"It's time you became acquainted with one of my dearest Pokémon - Scyther!" he exclaimed in excitement, features washed out by the light that spilled forth from the ball and revealed his strongest partner. Standing tall and proud, Scyther drew herself up and raised her dual scythes up high, fixing Alex and Spiden with a menacing glower. Any bug maniac worth their salt would know she was a prime specimen, bright eyes and shiny green body radiating vitality, and doubtlessly strong.

OOC: not learning Magical Leaf... I'll just wait for Giga Drain @ level 26 Send out Whirlipede and use Screech
IC:
Alex listened to Bugsy's response, and patiently and happily waited for this round of battle to finish so that he could see what would be the next Pokemon. He blinked casually to relax his eyes from staring too long and the strain induced on the muscles. In the few blinks of his eyes, he watched as the Kakuna countered Spiden's Shadow Sneak with another Bug Bite. That round of battle didn't take long to finish off the sturdy yellow cocoon Pokemon. When the Pokemon wobbled over, Alex knew that it was time to see who the third Pokemon was.
Lo and behold, out from the Pokeball, a giant green bug-- flying even-- appeared with two large scythes that looked like they could slice the Kakuna and Metapod instead. Alex gripped his fist in astonishment, and then uttered a "Wow" for a second. After his moment of awe was over, the trainer thanked his Spinarak's help and returned the bug type back into the Pokeball for some rest.
"So I guess this Pokemon should be the one that gives me a hard time? Return, Spiden, and take a rest!" Alex commented, still amazed by the size of that bug. Then, he dug his hands into his pocket to find another Pokeball to toss out, shouting, "Go, Gig! Get ready for a long battle! Start off with a Screech!"
Out from the Pokeball was a purple bug that looked like it was curled up into a ball. Upon sensing that an opponent was near, the bug energetically rolled around to get warm up first. Then, it prepared whenever opportunity came close to do a Screech attack. Gig was excited and ready for a battle!
