Haley stretched, reaching down to pull on the boots that, moments before, rested against her borrowed bed. If there was one thing she liked about Pokemon Centers, it's that they rent out rooms for traveling trainers. Not that she had anything against camping, but a nice bed every once in a while was quite pleasant. She checked over her Poke Balls, making sure she had the right ones. Denki, the Electrike, with his name written on the top. Sirius, the Growlithe, with her name, a sketch of her constellation, and a flame sticker on the Poke Ball. Sleipnir, with his name and a flame sticker. Tor, the Zubat, with nothing but his name. Yokina the Pichu, her name and a caution symbol atop the capture device. And Pax, the Togepi, an egg sticker on his Poke Ball. The last Poke Ball was empty at the moment. The trainer turned and, having zipped up her hooded jacket, scooped up the baby Pokemon, cradling him in her arms as she walked out of the room, turning in her keys as she did so. Haley stroked the napping Pokemon's odd rabbit ears (she still didn't understand that) as she walked through the silent city. She'd gotten up early; if she squinted, the trainer could just see the sun beginning to rise, and it was a nice break from the constant activity of Cherrygrove. The only sounds she could hear were the occasional sounds of a stray Pokemon. She stopped in front of Falkner's Gym, switching Pax to be cradled in one arm as she compulsively checked the Poke Balls again. She was reassured by the static electricity given off by Denki's and Yokina's and the heat eminating off of Sirius's and Sleipnir's. Switching Pax to her other arm, the young trainer pushed the door open, idly wondering if they trained this early. After stepping inside, and seeing that, indeed, the lights were on and the gym was open, she moved Pax once more so as to have him resting in the cradle of both arms. “Hello?” she called. “I'm here to challenge the Gym Leader Falkner!”

The Gym was open yes, but it was very early and not many were up at this hour, and especially not to challenge Falkner! Everyone knew that Falkner was like his birds and rose early to get most out of the day. The early bird gets the worm, after all. When Haley entered, only one of his assistance was there, and he looked rather tired while he was putting away the breakfast he had shared with Falkner, only a few moments earlier. He suppressed a yawn and poured himself another cup of coffee. He didn't notice Haley at first and it was first when he lifted the tray and turned to take it out, his eyes caught her. At first he blinked like he was unsure if he had fallen asleep, was there really a trainer this early? Then he got flustered he hadn't been ready for her and given her the proper welcome and introduction like it was his job. He stood indecisively with the tray as he couldn't decide if he should get that out of the way first (he found it embarrasing that the Gym may sent the wrong messages to its challengers) or put it down and get Haley introduced to Falkner. "Simon, did I hear someone arraving?" Falkner asked from the platform where the battlefield was. "Well, yes," Simon answered still flustered, "I think you have a challenger..." he answered but hesitated as Falkner's got distracted by something that happened ontop of the platform. "What are you waiting for?!" Falkner exclaimed a moment later, "Get up here you two, quickly!"Simon the Assistant quickly put the tray down and more or less herded Haley to the battle area, which was covered in snow, while Falkner was looking at a not-so-red delibird, who was playing around with a couple of Falkner's birds. When the Delibird noticed them it danced over to first Simon to give him a present, then Haley was the next one and Falkner got his last. It looked expectantly on them until they started opening them. Simon's gift was a delicious looking cake, while Falkner got a pair of goggles, which he put on immediately. "These are going to be useful with my next Sky Battle attempt" he said laughing and looked at Simon, "are you planning on sharing that?" He asked teasingly. Haley would find three Rare Candies in her present. ~~~ The Holiday Delibird has arrived to give you a gift!x3 ~~~ "Thank you very much," Falkner said gratefully to the delibird who waved cheerfully with a wing. Simon was quick to add his thanks as well, perhaps he would be lucky to get a visit next year as well? The delibird chirped happily to the pokemon around, before flapping its way up and into the cloud that had appeared over the platform. It disappeared into it and the cloud disolved to show nothing else than the roof. "I still don't get how it gets in and out," Falkner said wondering, then he looked around. "We better get the arena freed from snow, Simon?" Falkner asked and the assitant nodded and got to work right away. His Pidove and Starly was quick to blow the snow off and he then hurried down to put away the breakfast and taste a bit of his cake while Falkner was busy. "You were here for a battle?" Falkner asked Haley and would smile if she confirmed his question. "I can't wait," he said and gestured to where she should stand, before he walked to the other end and readied himself. "Welcome to Violet City Gym, I'm Falkner, as you probably know and I'm a master of flying types and if you want to win my badge, you have to beat me and my birds first, but I'm sure you know already know that too," he winked goodhumoured to Haley and raised a hand high above his head. The air became full of flying types off all size and shapes, several of them dived swiftly past Falkner with a hopeful look on their faces, while he was looking like he was taking some decissions. In the end he pointed at a pidgey, who made several excited loops before landing on his outstretched arm. All the other birds landed on ledges made for them, and they sat quietly to watch the battle. "My first choice for the battle, will be Pidgey here. Are you ready?" He asked Haley. Gym Leader Falkner has accepted your challenge. He sends out Pidgey level 10 Chose a pokemon!

Haley turned at the sound of liquid splashing into a container, looking at the assistant. She hovered uncertainly, not sure if he had noticed her. Pax yawned, tucking himself into his shell. The trainer grinned awkwardly when he finally caught sight of her, not sure about the etiquette. The silence stretched on for a long, awkward while, neither trainer nor assistant saying a word. She turned at the sound of the Gym Leader's name, mentally thanking Arceus and any other god she could think of for rescuing her. She turned to the assistant (Simon?) as he spoke, before jerking around as Falkner shouted, waking the tired baby Pokemon from his nap. He popped his head from his shell, ears perked towards Falkner. She scrambled over the ice, nearly going arse-over-tea-kettle several times as she fought for balance on the ice, herded by the assistant. Haley stared at the Delibird, mind going to how (s)he looked like the mythical manifestation of St. Nicholas. The Delibird more-or-less danced to Simon the Assistant, offering him something from his tail sack, before jumping to Haley. She accepted the present awkwardly -it had been years since she'd received a gift given with good intentions- and waited until Simon had begun to open his before opening hers. She palmed the Rare Candies and looked them over before sliding them into her rucksack. Her eyes went to the cake, and watched as Falkner slid on his new goggles - 'Sky Battles?' she wondered, but didn't say anything. “Thank you,” she echoed Falkner. Pax waved at the bird-Pokemon as it flew away, rubbing his eyes. “Same here,” she echoed him again, trying to figure out how the heck the Delibird got out. She decided that she probably didn't want to know. Her hand was held up to shield her face as the Pokemon Gusted the snow off the battlefield, shaking the snow out of her hair. She walked over to where she would stand for the battle. “I'm Haley, of Violet City, and I'm here to challenge you to a battle.”A sparking Poke Ball was unclipped from her hip, and she threw it forward. A red beam formed a green wolf-Pokemon. Denki leaped forwards, snarling and snapping playfully at his opponent. “My first choice is Denki, the Electrike.” She turned to the electric-type. “Use Tackle!”

After Electrike was sent out, Falkner raised an eyebrow, as his attention was focused on the electric type. He had been a gym leader long enough to know where this was going; after all, electric types beat flying type. However, when the trainer started the first turn with a Tackle, he kept his alertness as this could be a strategy or something. "Pidgey, Sand-Attack." He gave his bird an order. Denki barked playfully as he was running toward the Pidgey, and then slammed right onto the tiny bird. The poor avian could feel the dog's weight on the soft body, and chirped at the speed and size of that dog. Then, once the bird got to its feet, it kicked up some sand to the Electrike's eyes, making his vision a bit blurry to locate the Pidgey. "So, Haley, what brought you to the gym?" the blue haired boy asked the challenger, in a curious but still authoritative tone.

Denki yipped happily, wagging his tail... stub... as he took in the situation. So many birds! No, no Denki, focus! This is your chance to shine! He shook his head, and focused his gleaming eyes on his immediate opponent. Hearing his trainer's order, he charged forward, galumphing gaily towards the Pidgey. Denki connected hard, barreling into it with a slight yap. Now that's how it's done! He spun a gleeful circle after landing a successful hit, only to be met with a blast of sand in his eyes as he completed it. His trainer groaned, dragging her hand down her face. “Denki!” She shook her head. “Tackle, again!” He whined, plopping down on his haunches, bringing his paw up to rub at the irritating grits in his eyes. Golden eyes blinked heavily, darkened streaks of fur showing where his eyes had run and soaked it. “That hurt!” he complained, before getting into position to attack again. Hearing the Gym Leader's question, Haley attempted a poorly joke. “My... feet?” She shook her head, tinting a slight red at the tips of her ears, and brought a hand up to rub the back of her neck in a nervous habit. “Sorry, bad joke. But, if you're looking for some sob story, or someone to say that they're trying to show that the under dog can win too, you're not going to get it from me.” The teen snorted. “I'm merely here to further my own goals. To make my Pokemon, and in extension, myself, stronger.”Her mind went to the cruel red-haired trainer, and she grimaced. She was not like him, no way! “I'm here to get my Pokemon to their highest potential, and if I need to fight every Gym Leader in every Region thrive over, then I'll do so.” In agreement, Pax nodded, waggling his arms, while Denki barked, bobbing his head in a nod.

Falkner was a bit stunned by Haley's response to his question but nonetheless it was also an impressive answer as most trainers would walk into his gym pretending to be a master without a single badge. " I say that is a far more reasonable response than most of the others who enter my gym. Your joke was actually pretty fitting since your feet did technically bring you here but nonetheless I look forward to a good battle." His Pidgey had already partially blinded Haley's Electrike he still had the type advantage over Pidgey and Falkner was not about to get overly confident. " You did good in the last round Pidgey but be careful. Electrike are a strong electric type and this one is pretty well raised. Sand Attack should help but let's be careful. Use Tackle on Electrike before it can cause you any more damage." Denki was too fast for Pidgey however and the Sand Attack had let loose his inner rage. He ran forward in an amazing burst of speed running right into Pidgey causing even more damage than his first hit thanks to a Critical Hit. Pidgey was shaken up pretty badly from the Tackle but it was able to start running forward and perform a Tackle of it's own. Pidgey's Tackle was far less powerful than Denki's however it still did cause him a bit of discomfort. " Wow I had a feeling your Electrike was well raised but that was some Tackle. I had hoped Sand Attack would have lowered your Electrike's accuracy enough but it would appear as though it did not. I may have to reevaluate my strategy in this next round." Falkner had not been a gym leader for too long but even he knew that he had made a silly mistake thinking that lowered accuracy would be enough to give him the upper hand. " So tell me Haley how long have you been a trainer? You have raised your Pokemon very well by the looks of things so far. He said as he waited for a response. Haley shifted uncomfortably, rubbing again at the back of her neck. Technically, it wasn't a lie, and she would do anything for her Pokemon, and she was doing this to further her goals... just perhaps not the ones Falkner was thinking of. Pax shook his head, sensing his trainer's unease.
She perked up slightly, a proud grin curling at the corner of her lip when he called her Denki 'well-raised'. Denki puffed up as well, putting his chest up slightly and wagging his tail. Bouncing away from the Pidgey, he limped slightly from the force of the critical hit. He staggered back from the force of the little bird's hit, but didn't show much of a reaction.
“You okay bud?” Haley called, watching him limp slightly as he readjusted his stance. A sharp bark, almost offended sounding, was her answer, and she snickered. “Well, excuse me!”
“Thanks,” she turned back to Falkner, “But he's pretty much trained himself. Keeping up with us and all that. But he's an Electrike, they're insanely proud. He may act like a goof, but he's not willing to taint his pride by loosing a battle.” Again, Denki barked sharply in agreement, narrowing his gleaming eyes at his opponent.
She paused for a moment, trying to determine just how long she'd been a trainer. There had been times when time had passed insanely fast, and others when it had gone by as slowly as a Caterpie slugging along. “Maybe... half a year? More?” She rolled a shoulder in a shrug, grinning sheepishly.
The trainer glanced at her canid Pokemon once more, and called an order. “Tackle, again!”

Falkner nodded after Haley's replies, and then responded back. "Half a year? That's very good. A lot of trainers come with some... other types of Pokemon that were about your length as a trainer, but they can't match your level of skills. You're doing well so far for a trainer who's been around for half a year." He smiled, giving compliment to the trainer who was challenging his gym with an electric type. Then, he added his response to something else. "Then this just means that, your Electrike trained himself from the invisible peer pressure by being with a trainer, Haley. While your Pokemon is proud, it is proud to be with you and your Pokemon, and hence why he wanted to train himself to keep up with his friends. It is likely that he trains himself because he is proud to be with you and your team. Like an indirect training, you know? If you are not his trainer and he is by himself, his motivation would probably not be the same."After he had finished saying that, the canine charged forward again, slamming his self toward the young fledgling. The bird was down before it could make a move, although the critical hit earlier had taken a lot of life from this bird. "Good job, Pidgey. You too, Haley, good job. Not a lot of people can pass through my Pidgey. Now, come on out, Pidgeotto, we have a challenge for you." The gym leader smiled a bit, seeing that finally someone had been good enough to at least defeat his Pidgey. Returning his fainted Pokemon, and thanking the bird as well as congratulating the challenger, Falkner switched out to another Pokemon, which was like a bigger Pidgey and more feathery. "If I haven't tell you already, aren't flying Pokemon great? They are quite majestic creatures."
Denki is now level 15! Denki gained 1 happiness! Now +1! Falkner sent out his (Level 15) Pidgeotto!

Haley smiled at him, nodding slightly. “Thank you.” Denki 'woofed' as if in agreement.
Denki puffed up as he continued to speak, ruffling his fur and pushing out his chest, looking like he was mighty proud. He gave a great canine grin, flopping his tongue out of his mouth and wagging his stumpy tail. The green dog looked between his opponent's master and his own, easily agreeing. She was his master; of course she'd want him to be the best he could be, right? And he had to work to stay at pace with the rest of his pack... even the ones he didn't like. This human knew what he was talking about!
Denki gave a low 'wuff', eyes shining bright and sparks dancing on his fur. Haley blushed, and rubbed at the nape of her neck. “Doesn't every Pokemon aim to make its trainer proud? It would take a bad trainer for them to do otherwise.”
After confirming that his opponent was knocked out, Denki pranced about like a yearling puppy, all high legs and wagging tail and floppy tongue. Haley rolled her eyes as she called out to him, thanking him and telling him he'd done a great job.
Haley felt it would be redundant to thank him for the compliment, so she merely smiled again. She shifted Pax into a more comfortable position, the egg-bound Pokemon wiggling his lagomorphic ears. A pale hand came up to scratch at his ears, and he made a contented purring sound.
When Falkner recalled the fainted Pokemon, and sent out the next on its evolutionary chain, Haley called out: “Denki, to me!” The canid pouted for a moment, before trotting back to her side and sitting down, leaning his head against her leg. She stretched out a hand to pat him between the ears.
Haley leaned down, setting the Togepi on the floor. He bounced to the battlefield, waggling his ears at the bird that stood several times his size. “You alright to do this?” She called, and as an answer he thumped a foot down on the ground. She grinned, and called out an order, “Pax, use Metronome!”
Turning to Falkner, she nodded. “They're very beautiful; I love watching them fly. I have a handful back at the Professor's.”

Falkner chuckled, "Well, essentially, yes. But some trainers have difficulty bonding with their newly caught Pokemon and earning their respect. After a while though, they should be able to resolve their differences. If not, the trainer would release the Pokemon." Then, he watched as Haley switched Pokemon. Did she really switch into a Togepi? While he did know that Togepi would evolve to flying type, the little bunny eared walking egg seemed a little incompatible to his Pidgeotto. "So your next choice is a Togepi, huh? They evolve into a rather unique flying type Pokemon, but don't think I will go easy on you because you're using a soon-to-be flying type. Pidgoetto, Gust!" Falkner commented at Haley's next Pokemon, and then sent out his "bigger Pidgey" to use the flying type attack. With a flap of its giant wings, a small whirlwind of gust was formed and went toward the little Togepi's direction. The walking egg was tossed up in the air and then left to fall down on the ground. Miraculously, the egg shell still wasn't cracked from this, they must be made of strong denial of momentum. Then, the Togepi happily lifted his baby fingers, and wiggled left and right as he squeaked and summoned a spell. The Metronome turned into an attack known as Defend Order. When he finished, a white orb was conjured in the air, and then a swarm of glowing Combee-looking thing fluttered around, ready to defend the Togepi from whatever Pidgeotto's next attack would be.

Haley nodded in agreement, her eyes focusing on the dueling duo. It was the mutated baby Pokemon's first battle, and it was against a Gym Leader. She couldn't help but wonder how he would fare.
“Yeah, they do. I'm curious how his ears will translate over, though.” she laughed, watching the baby Pokemon bounce, his ears flopping this way and that. She bit her lip; the bird-type was over three times his height, and she couldn't help but to wonder if she'd made a mistake. But she had to have faith in him.
The trainer flinched and the Electrike growled as the egg-bound Pokemon went tumbling ears over feet, landing on its fragile-looking shell that, miraculously, didn't shatter on impact.
However, he didn't seem to mind much, as the Togepi merely bounced up again, and waggled its fingers in an odd motion. The two on Pax's side were startled as a white orb formed, creating a mini-army of glowing Combee.
After seeing that the Combee weren't going to launch an attack, Haley called out: “Pax, you good to keep going?” At the Togepi's affirmative-sounding cheer, she threw out another command: “Alright, Metronome again!”

"Well, I'm sure you'll find out when your Togepi evolves," Falkner replied to Haley at the ears comment, and then kept quiet as the challenger didn't seem interested in talking about flying type Pokemon. Getting ready for another Metronome, it didn't take Falkner very long to order his Pidgeotto to use Gust again. The big bird casually flew up and summoned another gust, which repeated what happened earlier with the Togepi floating in the air and then falling; that was anti-climatic. Afterwards, the wiggly fingers worked again, and then this time, summoned a flurry of snow that attacked the Pidgeotto in its direction. When the attack stopped, the feathery Pokemon shivered only once for a few second, and checked to see if its body was frozen from the attack. Thankfully, its body was intact, and the powder snow was more like a scratch. "Nice move, but it wasn't enough to take down my Pidgeotto," Falkner taunted the challenger, finding her a bit silly to use Togepi on his PIdgeotto. On the other hand, the Togepi looked like he was about to pass out.

Haley sucked air in through her teeth as the little Pokemon was tumbled around, its shell somehow not cracking in the squall. The little Pokemon hurried to its feet, and waggled its fingers, this time summoning a blast of freezing snow. The trainer rolled her shoulders, enjoying the brief burst of chilled air. Denki shivered, fluffing up his fur and leaning against her calf.
She nodded in acknowledgment of Falkner, mind enshrouded in thought. “Pax!” she called out to the egg-Pokemon. He huffed, flicking an ear her way, one tiny hand coming down to rub at his shell. “Come back!” He fluffed the fur on his ears, but turned dutifully and hurried to her side. She scooped him up in one arm, digging out a Poke Ball with the other. “You've done well, thank you.”
She hit the button on the Poke Ball, holding out the capsule. A beam of red light shot out, taking the form of a blue bat Pokemon. The eyeless Pokemon cried out, flapping its wings to stay aloft. “Zubat!”
“Tor! Ready to give it a go?” It clicked back in response, fluttering in a bobbing X-pattern. “Alright then, Wing Attack!”
The Zubat's wings glowed as it charged forward, aiming to strike the Pidgeotto.
“Do you like all winged Pokemon?” she questioned, eyes going between the two Pokemon's wings. “Or just birds?”

Falkner did feel a little bit bad of how much damage his Pokemon did to the cute egg Pokemon. But it also excited him, he wanted to know her next Pokemon as this was such a surprise. When Tor was released he smiled as it danced in the air, almost forgetting this was a battle. "Well, birds are my true love. But any flying Pokemon excite me!" he admitted to the young trainer. "You zubats coat is very glossy! You must treat him well"Finally snapping out of his trance and love for flying Pokemon he looked again at the battle field. He was annoyed that his planned attacked would no longer work, but he kept his friendly smile. "Ok! Pidgeotto sand attack!" he called out. Pidgoetto was quick to move. Hitting sad into the poor just send out Zubats eyes. Zubat was mid flight flying towards the hurt Pidgeotto. Even with sand in his eyes his wing attacked hit! Alright Tor! Battle

Haley smiled proudly as the Gym Leader praised her Pokemon's gleaming coat, puffing up slightly. Tor seemed to like the compliment as well, clicking loudly and seeming to show off a bit in his flying. “It's entrancing watching them fly, isn't it? The way it seems so effortless.” Tor chirped loudly as he was complimented, and she gave a quiet laugh. “Thank you. I'm fairly certain that if I didn't groom him every day, he'd lead a revolt.”
Tor gave a slightly offended chirp, as though to say 'no I wouldn't!'
When the sand hit his eyes Tor blinked rapidly, trying to clear it out with tears. “You alright Tor?” Haley called, frowning. In response he bobbed affirmatively in the air, chirruping. The Zubat was not going to allow a bit of sand to put him out of commission. “You're sure? Alright, try Wing Attack again!
The Zubat flapped rapidly, his wings beginning to glow, before rocketing towards the Pidgeotto, hoping to connect despite his blurry vision.
