"Donita, right? I need you to come back to my laboratory if you would please. I have a special favor to ask of you."
The young trainer looked at her PokeWatch that was top of the arts device for technology. Useful as a phone or a map. Donita sighed and looked behind her on the route she was currently on. She hadn't made it very far but she was at least halfway to the town. Will she ever make it there and truly start her journey?
Reluctantly, the beginning trainer grummly headed back towards New Bark town slow at first as her feet dragged across the grass but then picked up the pace into a small jog. 'I need to hurry this up and get back to my task at hand. If the Professor needs me then it must be important.' Nodding, she hurried back into town.
The doors to the Lab opened with a loud squeak as the panting Pokemon Trainer slowly walked inside the building. "U-uhm." Donita said as she caught her breath, taking in a few gasps of air to quickly calm her heart beat as she looked around for the Professor.
"Pr-professor Elm? I've arrived just like you asked me to."
The wheels of an office chair rolling across the floor sounded from afar, somewhere beyond the shelving and whir of machinery. A lab assistant near the door had turned around, fingers raised to adjust his glasses, and gazed at their guest. With a smile the white coated man raised a hand to catch Donita's attention then waved her inside as welcome. "He's just down that way Miss," he voiced, moving his arm to point down the center isle of research materials with his clipboard.
Further in, the back desks and long table would come into view as would a slightly disheveled man with short chestnut hair and round glasses. Hearing the footsteps behind him he spoke, "Just ooonnnneee moment..." He trailed off, eyes intensely focused on a set of data crunching on his monitor. After the promised moment passed the professor spun himself around in his chair. "Ah, thank you for waiting. I'm glad you could make it back here Donita. Sorry to derail you from the start of your journey around Johto but... It dawned on me that I could really use your assistance."
With a smile the professor rose and withdrew a bright red device from one of his many coat pockets. Elm offered out the object. "This is a pokédex! An upgraded one at that. It contains general details on all species from all known regions across the planet," he proudly stated, chest puffing up ever so slightly as he said it. "As impressive as it is, it doesn't have quite all the data that I'm looking for. You see, I need more details on as many species as I can get, but I'm so busy catching and keeping up with all the stuff I have here there's no way I'd have the opportunity to get the live accurate info myself so..." He paused to shove a hand into another of his pockets. "What I need is a field assistant. Someone to go out into the world and gather that information for me. You seemed like the perfect candidate since you were already just setting out. No doubt you're going to encounter all kinds of pokémon just going about your own journey, so all I'd need you to do is keep that Dex around so it can collect the data and transfer it back here. All on it's own of course!"
Elm unfolded the bit of paper he'd just pulled out, turning it around and showing it to Donita. "And of course I'd offer some incentives. This here is a list of milestones based on how many pokémon you simply see, as well as how many of them you capture."
"So! How about we start you off with what you have with your right now?"
"It seems to be working right. Now, just one last thing before you head off. I have a few trainers that have volunteered to help me out on this. So, to make sure I don't have too many repeat entries in the case of trading around the same pokémon, I'd prefer if you went out and captured as many as you could on your own instead of just sharing a pokémon with someone."
"Some sharing is expected of course, as it is interesting data to see how pokémon get around and relations between different trainers. I'll just only accept a small collection of repeats as it's not really what I'm going for at the moment."
