Sara took the items from the professor. ”Whoa! All of these are for me?” Sara said, surprised. ”This lab must be well funded!” She thought to herself. She took off her backpack and started trying to fit the items into her bag as Kellen, the squirtle, grabbed onto the tail of a scarf which was hanging off the side, and then started stomping around in small circles like a drum major in a marching band with the scarf trailing behind them. Sara took stock of the items quickly as she shoved them into one of the smaller pockets on the front of her backpack - for easy access of course.
”There’s one more thing I wanted to ask you Professor.” Sara said, with a smile. ”It’s been a while since I’ve been to trainer school, and I don’t really know many of the Pokémon in this region. I was wondering if you had some sort of field guide to help me understand what these pokemon can do. The types of attacks, the size, whatkindofflavorstheyhave, what their tracks look like… Something like that?” Sara eyed the bookshelves noticing the extensive volumes on pokemon ecology, and then added, ”In Alola they had this type of pokémon helpers which would keep track of all the different pokemon they had ever seen. I think they called them Robo Decks or something. A few trial goers I met had them and the things wouldn’t stop spouting stuff about gambling… but the trainers swore that they were useful as field guides and would know things about pokemon at just a glance!”

"Robo decks... Robo dex... Pokédex!" Elm exclaimed, slapping himself lightly across the forehead in realisation. "Why of course, I had completely forgotten. Every trainer must have one of these!" Rushing towards his desk and sliding open the bottom drawer, he began rummaging through an assortment of boxes. Producing one of the boxes, he abruptly tore open the packaging to reveal a shiny red handheld device.
"This little contraption is called a Pokédex," explained Elm as he popped in a pair of double A batteries and plugged the device into his laptop via a USB cable. The screen lit up and began to flash as it began to apply the latest patch. "It works a bit like a visual Shazam. You point it at a Pokémon and it searches the database to identify the species." In a little over a minute, the gizmo appeared to have finished updating and the Professor unplugged it and handed it to Sara. "Quite neat heh? It was designed by counterpart in Kanto, Professor Oak."
"Most of the known species have already been catalogued but the world is evolving around us all the time... seeing as you're from Alola you must have heard about how the Grimer are adapting over there... some truly remarkable developments!" continued the Professor passionately. "As you encounter and catch Pokémon during your journey we will be able to learn even more about them."

"Now, just one last thing before you head off. I have a few trainers that have volunteered. And so to make sure I don't have too many repeat entries I'd prefer if you went out and captured as many as you could on your own instead of just sharing Pokémon with someone."
"Some sharing is expected of course, as it is interesting data to see how Pokémon get around and relations between different trainers. But it's not my focus right now so I'll be keeping track here."
