Shiro emerged from his pokeball to the soft light of afternoon in New Bark Town. It was familiar; he had lived wild not far from here, but now he was a Trainer's pokemon and he'd go wherever his human wanted. The others of his team joined him soon: the little rat who had been the whole cause behind Vitra impressing him enough to leave his old life behind, the Starly she called Kuro, and the Bulbasaur Midori. Looking up, Shiro's eyes brightened at the sight of food; his stomach growled but he waited until Vitra had given him a portion before reaching for the first piece.
He'd just picked one up when the purple rodent-type darted in to snatch one, and Shiro squealed in outrage. "That's mine! Wait for your own!"
Kai only looked at him, nibbling away at the food held in her front paws. Shiro huffed, but he was pleased enough when Vitra gave him another piece to make up for it, and more than happy when Midori nudged her way between them, a solid barrier and protection Shiro was glad to have. The rest of the meal passed in relative harmony, each pokemon eating their fill, and when they were done Shiro wandered away. He had no intention of leaving the little town, but he wanted to explore. Even if it was with the pest of a Rattata following.
Shiro ignored Kai as best he could, and his path was aimless; it was only the flash of the young boy's hair that caught his eye, and he watched the youngster make a full circuit of the lab- and then another, and another. Each time he passed by the back of the building, he looked up at an open window and paused for a moment before going on.
"I don't like him." Kai's voice made Shiro jump, so fixed that he'd forgotten the Rattat's presence. "Sneaking around like that. What's he up to?"
"He's not hurting anyone," Shiro replied, pushing himself up onto his tail and watching as the young human appeared a third time, his gaze going again to the window.
"Yet." Kai looked at him. "Maybe he's going to steal a pokemon."
"Steal? What pokemon? Why?" He was confused and uncertain; surely not. Who would ever do such an awful thing?
"Maybe a Bulbasaur, like Midori. As to why-" Kai sat and scratched her ear. "Who knows? Humans are weird."
"Humans aren't weird. Vitra's nice," Shiro contradicted, dropping back to his hind paws and flicking his ears as the young boy sidled around to the front of the lab again.
"She's weird too. She stopped us fighting but asks us to fight other pokemon? Seems weird to me. I'm going to see what he's up to." Without another word, Kai set off. Shiro followed, sensing nothing good in the Rattata's words and still not convinced that the boy was as bad as she claimed. The two rounded the building, and Shiro spotted him standing just in the shadow of a plant by the entrance, peeking through the door.
"Hi!" Shiro piped up, and the boy jumped, whirling around to blink at the two. "What are you doing here? I think you can just go right in..."
"Shhh!" the boy hissed, waving his hands at the Sentret and snatching a quick look back at the door. "Everyone will hear you!"
Was that a bad thing? "Told you," Kai sniffed. "He's up to something, I know it."
Shiro ignored her. "Is everything okay?" he asked, tipping his head to the side in concern, but when the boy waved his hands at him again, the Sentret backed up.
"Go away!" the human demanded, and he darted around to the back of the building again.
"I'm going to bite him. That'll teach him to steal!" Kai was off, and despite his own growing misgivings Shiro ran after her. He paused, just for a second, as the boy turned and his eyes widened at the sight of the Rattata charging at him; Shiro hurled himself forward and between them as the boy stumbled backward and tripped over his feet, falling onto his rear.
"No! Leave him alone. Go back to Vitra!" Shiro swiped at the Rattata before spreading his little arms out to the sides and narrowing his eyes. For a moment the two stood still, staring at each other; Shiro could hardly believe when Kai broke first and backed off.
"Whatever. He's not worth it anyway, and when some pokemon goes missing, you'll know why." Nose up, the rodent-type stalked off, back to where Vitra and the rest of the team were enjoying the last of the sunlight.
Shiro watched her go long enough to make sure it wasn't a trick; then he relaxed and turned to blink at the boy, who was just getting to his feet again. "It's okay, she's gone. I don't think she was really going to bite, she's not that bad." He spoke quieter, mindful of the boy's request to stay quiet even if he wasn't sure why.
He was pleased when the human knelt down to him again. "You helped me. I guess- I guess you're nice. You're not so bad." He hesitated and Shiro patted his leg, encouraging him to continue. "See, I'm supposed to get my first pokemon, and start a journey, but I'm nervous. What if something happens? What if something goes wrong and I'm too far away from home to come back? What if I just... can't do it?" His eyes were upset- Sentret blinked, silent for a moment, and then turned away, beckoning with a paw.
Slowly, the boy rose to his feet and followed; when he seemed to falter as they neared the front door again, Shiro reached to grasp him by one of his pant legs and urged him on. The lights inside were bright, and the boy twitched as another human ran by holding a pokeball, but Shiro kept hold of him.
The rest passed- slowly, but steadily. The older human spotted the boy quickly, and with patient coaxing he managed to get the name of the pokemon the boy wanted; the youngster's face lit up like a light as he was handed his first pokemon, awe and joy glowing from his eyes, and he choked out a 'thank you' before turning to leave again. Shiro padded with him back outside, and his eyes closed with happy pleasure as the boy reached out to hug him. "Thank you too. I know you're someone else's pokemon, but I hope I get a Sentret as nice as you someday."
Kai had been wrong! This boy wasn't bad, just really nervous. And Shiro had helped! Just like he'd been helped. "You're welcome! Goodbye!" He waved as the boy ran off toward a house, still clutching his pokeball carefully, and Shiro turned to join the rest of his team, proud of himself and glad to be sitting here with his trainer and all her pokemon- even Kai- as they watching the sun slowly set.
