Art drawn for me by Bearyteary of dA. Note that the horns, when or if worn, are just costume horns in this scenario and not… y’know, natural.
Jessica usually looks like she wants to punch someone, and that isn’t far from the truth. It’s in the fierce, angry edge to her thick eyebrows and the fire in her eyes. It’s the rage pounding in her veins and the natural downturn to her lips. The delinquent has a wide nose, with dark red eyes, and a strong jaw with a chin that could (potentially) cut through stone. Her skin is the colour of warm teak, indicating mixed heritage, which gives her a warmer edge to the affair when she smiles – but that isn’t often.
Both in form and clothing, Jessica exudes fierceness. She stands at an intimidating six feet tall, and her height is only further amplified by her afro-textured dark hair, which sticks out in every direction, only to cascade down around her shoulders. Jess isn’t afraid to take up space, either, and her ingrained wariness of other people makes her resting expressions default to unapproachable. Her clothing defaults, ironically, to the colours of Team Rocket – black and red, primarily – and though she doesn’t wear the official red R as of yet, she wouldn’t look out of place in such a get-up if given the chance. Red lipstick completes the ensemble in addition to edgier clothing, completing the image of the sort of girl most parents warn their children about.
This is a woman who makes her presence felt, subtly or otherwise - usually the latter. Her walk is sometimes more of a swagger, chin held high, with a feline grace to her steps that can come across as predatory or very, very careful. The woman’s accent is distinctly unovan, considering she hails from New Tork City, only pronouncing her 'r' sounds if they're before a vowel, elongated vowels and so forth. She might "tawk to teh nuhse" or set an appointment for "twos-dey". Considering she’s just arrived in Johto, it’s still pretty prominent, though it’ll likely ease out in time.
Jessica was raised with a deep-seated hatred for the majority of humanity, and that goes perfectly hand in hand with her innate schadenfreude for the incompetent chumps in her life. This quickly spirals into a subtle flame of self-loathing when she’s reminded she, too, is a human, with her own flaws and problems.
She had always been expected to be perfect, and even that wasn’t enough, so she’s long since fallen into embracing her darker sides.
The teenager takes life very seriously, always on alert. She’s typically scanning her surroundings and seeing how she can make the best opportunities for what she’s been given – making notes of all possible exits, improvised weapons, security and any living beings in the area. She’s of the watchful sort, but her ire becomes evident when she’s lied to or cheated out of something she’s owed.
Defying her is not usually in anyone’s best interest, after all. Jess has little patience for weakness, including her own, and does not like to be denied. Life wasn’t always so grave, but she’s long adapted into what she’s had to endure. Under all of the hostile barbs and abrasive attitude lies a loyal, caring and strong-willed woman determined to live by her own set of terms and honour, though it’s not usually a side anyone gets to see. She’s far more hardened now, though her rage, molten hot in her veins and simmering under the surface, often turns people away before they get to see underneath.
Intimidation and sarcasm can be as powerful as a well trained Pokemon, after all.
Jess respects power enough to follow orders assigned to her from someone competent enough to give them, which may very well lead to friction in time if her way proves to be the smarter one. She’s not hesitant to call someone out on being ‘a moron’ either, which further endears her to very little in the way of even her own allies.
Born into a toxic home environment and more of a mistake than anything else, Jess’s life didn’t start off terribly well. Her mother worked as a waitress whilst her father worked in construction, though a good deal of the money was spent on her father’s budding gambling addiction, liquor, or the women he was often unfaithful with when Jess’s mother was busy. Jess was often caught up in entirely too many night fights, considered a burden and a nuisance more than anything, and their trailer home became the scene of more violence than any kid should’ve had to see.
Social services were useless at resolving anything, and a few years later, Jessica’s mom was dead.
And with her father in prison for domestic abuse and assault, Jess effectively became an orphan. When bullies started attempting to pick on her for all of this, as well as all of the reasons children usually do, she took on a more hostile, abrasive attitude. She made little in the way of friends after that, and from there things only got worse. Over her childhood years, Jess bounced in and out of foster homes as a result of unfortunate circumstances, her own actions, or a mixture of both. Her favourite of these homes happened to be one in Ecruteak, but not because of the gym leader. No, she was quite fond of the burned tower, and tended to watch the fire trainers train their Pokemon there when she was skipping school or otherwise suspended or expelled. Unfortunately, she wouldn’t end up staying there longer than seven months, because she ended up getting into a spot of bother. Or five. Who knew a pencil in a microwave would cause so much damage? Or setting a bin on fire and bailing? In either case, social services had long given up on Jess, and so she was tossed back into the system.
Maybe it was the not so stellar foster parents, or the bullies at schools where Jess had to fight to survive, or the shady neighbourhoods Jess had to navigate every day from Trainer School. But Jess had hardened up into a practical young lady - if very, very troubled. Things only got worse when she ended up in Virbank, where gangs were aplenty even with the home for troubled youth trying their best to stop it, but by that point, Jess was done listening to people. She mulled there for a bit, but ultimately disappeared one day when she’d heard about Team Rocket – and how influential they could be.
She’d aged up out of the system in the end, after all, and getting to Johto was the easy part. Now she had to catch their attention...
Obtain a houndoom, scizor and feraligatr, get stronger, destroy the gyms, join and rise up in team rocket’s ranks… the list goes on.
Other Info: For accessibility reasons on my side and on the side of any potential readers, I’m going to be keeping Jess’s accent as readable as possible. Just imagine it's still there, even moreso when she's angry.
How did you find us?: So I’ve been lurking a while, but I came from Harper through (technically) both Mindir’s ad (y’all know them as Tarler here) and Silverwing’s ad afterwards. I have no idea how this would be handled.
Application completed: Yes!
