Falkner couldn't contain his excitement, "Exactly! Doduo is an extraordinary bird. Once I get him evolved, instead of taking him into the races for his speed it's going to be an incredible experience hurtling through the air unlike any other bird." He accompanied his statement with a wave of his hand. He could imagine it now. Being launched into the air and sustained in flight not due to the flapping of wings but by the sheer will and helicoptering power of his soon-to-be dodrio's legs. "It's going to require a whole different kind of control compared to typical flight," he added, beaming a smile down at his challenger whilst the two birds between them combated. Of who quickly resolved the latest scuffle and set to waiting for another round of commands. "What? Where?" Pidgeotto returned, feathers ruffling even further at the thought. He was far too tired to elegantly handle a quick clean in the air. Thankfully Falkner finally seemed to be in tune with the pokémon's desires. "Pidgeotto, Roost!"It was now or never. While he hadn't quite been paying full attention to the level of wear the staravia was putting on his bird with each blow it was often not a great pay-off without a bit of sand attack or mud-slap to offset another potential hit. Falkner watched this round more intently as he silently wished for his little gamble to work. And it did. With the worry of having gotten some unwanted sand near his own eyes Pidgeotto dropped from the air much faster than he'd moved so far in the match. Mixed with the slight imperfect viewing that Astraea had she overshot her attack quite a bit. Pidgeotto promptly, almost too harshly, hit the ground and immediately set to roosting. A faint glow overtook his figure whilst he pruned some of his feathers to retain his more illustrious look from the start of the battle. Falkner was able to breath a sigh of relief and tune back in fully to Lei's response to his earlier question. For a moment he thought she was even more like him than simply the potential of a bird keeper when she brought up family pokémon. Though as she continued his heart dropped. Torkoal. Non-flying types. An overwhelming torrential wave loomed over the young adult. "Oh. The Professor is well renowned for all kinds of evolution research. That's quite a prestigious position," he started, buying time as he rapidly tried to figure out how to ask the next part. "I think I remember a posting about it. Does he have a few different specialists helping him out..?" He didn't want to giveaway that he'd had the wrong impression of her trainer style this whole time, but how else was he going to find out if she was a fellow bird keeper? vs Falkner Weather: Clear [attr="class","qkt-bkgd"] [attr="class","qkt-wild-pkmn"] [attr="class","qkt-clip"]Pidgeotto LV 15 HP 71% [34/48] [attr="class","qkt-wild-imgbox"] [attr="class","qkt-pkmn-img"] [attr="class","qkt-trainer-pkmn"] [attr="class","qkt-clip"]Astraea LV 16 HP 75% [36/48] [attr="class","qkt-trainer-imgbox"] [attr="class","qkt-pkmn-img"] Pidgeotto [Keen Eye]: -1 ATK Astraea [Intimidate]: +1 EVA, -1 ACC SP35 Astraea used Wing Attack! Lei looked surprised at Falkner and then laughed. "I don't doubt it will be an experience!" She exclaimed, "but it must be a rough trip both going up and landing." It didn't sound very pleasant to her but she was also used to ride pokemon back home, with well trained charizards and soft saddles. "Personally I think I'd prefer a real flyer and staying up there for longer, see the world from above," she said with a soft smile. She loved finding new secret places on the islands to camp and enjoy the day, or spotting a rare or strong pokemon to battle she would otherwise have missed. And then it of course was a fast and easy way to get from point a to b, compared to trotting along roads. Riding on Tarok opened up for one type of adventures and explorations while flying opened up for another.
Astraea was laughing so much of Pidgeotto falling for her trick that she didn't concentrate enough to see through her lowered vision, and she raced past him missing him completely. the staravia flapped hard to stop and turn around, she felt rather embarrassed by her mistake. "Wing Attack!" Lei called and Astraea sped up to make things good again.
Lei looked rather annoyed when Pidgeotto dodged Astraea's attack, while it was fun when others had the trouble she straight up hated it when it happened to herself. It was so frustrating to have big strong pokemon and then not being able to finish the battle because the pokemon were stupid enough to fall for the opponents tricks. Falkner was quick to take advantage of it and his bird looked a lot more energetic afterwards, which made Lei smile wryly. "You certainly aren't a push over, good call," she said to him and then held out Astraea's pokeball and recalled her. "Larksong, take the stage!" Lei ordered as she let out a swablu who looked around curiously. She blinked soflty to Falkner and ignored Pidgeotto completely. Behind her Polarmist was glaring at her with crossed arms, why did she always get all the attention and the chances to show off?
Lei shrugged at Falkner's questions about Professor Elm and her work. "Honestly I think he hires anyone who signs up for it, it's not like I'm his personal assistant or anything," she said and grinned, "that would be pretty boring in my opinion, I'm not suited to sit behind a desk all day." "It fits me well with the freedom to do things at my own pace, but it takes time when you need to get your hands on every type and species of pokemon which exist," she explained.

"Gust to get back up quick!" Falkner ordered and Pidgeotto obliged. Astraea was still the faster bird overall. Her dive in to make good on solid wing attack this time wasn't something the other avian could simply dodge even with a bit of sand to help. Falkner's pokémon started beating rapidly in an attempt to help propel himself upward as she came in. A 2 for 1 if it would work; which it narrowly did. With the dusty particles still agonizing her vision Astraea dove head first into the produced harsh winds. She was still right on target, even adjusting her projection to account for her quarry ascending, until one particular sweep of the gust threw her just enough off-balance her wing swept an inch underneath Pidgeotto's feet. And only that much because he tucked them in as close as he possibly could in an extended effort to dodge. Falkner grinned at the success. "Nice work Pidgeotto," he praised, beaming further as Lei also sent over her positive regards at the latest set of maneuvers. He couldn't have asked for Roost to have worked any more favorably for him. But his joy in this would be disrupted by her shrugging response to his gentle prod on her assistant position. That cinched it. She was a generalist. Or so he was understanding at this point. The blue-haired lad nodded a few times in response as he tried to keep his smile visible albeit diminished from a moment ago. At least he could take solace in the fact that she seemed to at least have an appreciation for bird types, even if it was only the rarer ones. This time when his challenger made to recall and send out another pokemon his excitement wasn't quite as overwhelming, though he couldn't help but remain intrigued. What would it be this time? He honestly didn't even have a guess, though if he did he could have never come close to predicting the rare plump bird that appeared before him. "Is that... a Swablu?" He tried not to sound so unsure as he peered over to Larksong in awe. It didn't look right. It's usual short, soft, baby blue feathers looked to be replaced with a fine furry felt and he could swear he saw a stitch line at this distance. He wasn't sure he liked it. It was clearly supposed to be a swablu but it was unnatural. He'd never even heard of such a thing. Where'd it come from? Pidgeotto was more open with his own distaste for the strange creature that was now hovering before him. With Larksong paying him no mind, the tan feathered bird swooped off to the side and flew overhead to let loose a cloud of sand and dirt over top of the plushie. vs Falkner Weather: Clear [attr="class","qkt-bkgd"] [attr="class","qkt-wild-pkmn"] [attr="class","qkt-clip"]Pidgeotto LV 15 HP 71% [34/48] [attr="class","qkt-wild-imgbox"] [attr="class","qkt-pkmn-img"] [attr="class","qkt-trainer-pkmn"] [attr="class","qkt-clip"]Larksong LV 12 HP 100% [36/36] [attr="class","qkt-trainer-imgbox"] [attr="class","qkt-pkmn-img"] Pidgeotto [Keen Eye]: -1 ATK Larksong Pillowsoft [Natural Cure]: -1 ACC SP35 Astraea used Wing Attack! It was certainly time to switch out Astraea! Lei found it really annoying that the otherwise promising bird could miss two times in a row just because a little sand threw her off, she really needed to do better than that! Especially since Lei had just mentioned it as one of her possible favorites, it was embarrassing to watch. She exhaled as Falkner praised his bird for his skillful dodging and forced herself to relax. She had wanted a fun battle, an interesting one and would have been really disappointed if Falkner had been a real pushover and easy to beat. Some of the Trials had been a real challenge as well but she had overcome those, she could do this as well. She wanted to test her skill against him and see if she could beat him at his own game. She just hated seeing her moves miss!
Lei didn't at all notice Falkner's disappointment of her not being a flying type trainer, she didn't really understand why people found some types so interesting they only wanted to use that one. She just liked the thrill of the battle as it was a thing she was good at. She did notice his lack of enthusiasm of her swablu which surprised her. She thought the sight of the fluffy pokemon would make him thrilled even if Larksong had just been an ordinary one. "She is!" Lei said with forced cheerfulness, "Both Larksong here and Polarmist are from the breeder of Pillowsoft," Lei exclaimed and gestured down to the delibird at her side, surprised Falkner hadn't seen the similarities. Larksong chirped sweetly while Polarmist turned his head away from the other bird in disgust. "I assure you they are live and kicking pokemon!" Lei laughed, "If you look closely you'll see that it is all feathers, just bred to look differently. Pillowsoft af breeding pokemon to look cute like plushies and when I was younger I loved cuddling with them," Lei explained and Larksong's chirping rose in happiness and the little bird looked hopefully back at her trainer. "I have a few others from that breeder as well, but they are not birds so I haven't brought them today," Lei added and then winked, "What would the fun have been to come here with not flying types?"
Larksong coughed and looked offended at Pidgeotto before she shook her feathers and tried to preen the worst dirt out of her wings. "Thanks, just what I wanted," she said sarcastically and looked him up and down before sighing with dropping shoulders. She did not look forward to a battle with this strong looking fellow, but it seemed like that was the only thing Lei was interesting in at these times, it had been ages since they had cuddled while watching TV.
"Larksong," Lei said and the bird readied herself but Lei went silent as she thought, not liking her options. "Go with a Fury Attack," she decided and Larksong steeled herself as she reluctantly flapped closer to Pidgeotto hoping to get a few attacks in.

Pidgeotto's keen eyes almost rolled at the Pokemon's sarcasm, fueled by a dislike of battle or something else- That wasn't Pidgeotto's place to figure out what it was, though. All that was required of him was making sure that they won this battle by any means necessary. The rapport between the two trainers had been going well, but something had ruffled his trainers feathers and that was causing a sore spot within the avian's heart. Often looked down on for being a bird trainer in the first place, there was something to be said about Falkner having a good time with a battle, but even moreso when Falkner wasn't. It fueled Pidgeotto's fire, and thanks to Falkner's quick thinking, it was going to stretch out this battle to possibly give them a win. Bringing bird Pokemon in here was one thing, but trying to beat them at their own game? That was foolish. Pidgeotto was going to prove it.
He didn't need fancy colors, or to have come from a special place. Their bond was enough.
"Whoah, Breeders, hmm? That's pretty advanced stuff. Though I could definitely tell from this battle that you were more than the typical doe-eyed trainer. It makes battles like these fun, even if we aren't cut from the same cloth." Falkner smiled slightly, doing his best to keep the emotions flowing. He'd just gotten so excited at the prospect of another (incredibly talented) bird keeper. But, these Pokemon were beautiful and well taken care of. It's all he could ask for in regards to the birds he loved so much. "I hope you don't mind that we keep things simple. It's worked out for us so far, so let's keep it up Pidgeotto! Gust!" Pidgeotto unfurrowed his wings and let out a caw before beginning to beat them in rapid succession, creating the signature torrent of wind. "Let's hope all the extra adornments on your Swablu don't make them an easier target!"
Easy or not, Pidgeotto wasn't about to let this chance slip away. If it wanted the sand and dirt out of its cloud-esque wings, maybe the wind could help. The air buffeted poor Larksong around, and when she moved in an attempt to retaliate, Pidgeotto had already expertly dodged out of the way. His beak clicked with amusement, chest ruffling out with a bit of pride. "Well, I triiiied to help with the sand, but I guess it wasn't enough." It was going to be harder and harder for Larksong to hit, but Falkner didn't appreciate the fact that only one of his Pokemon's moves could really 'hurt' the Swablu. They were both stuck for now, it seemed. "I don't think i've gotten to have an aerial battle like this in a while. This really is a treat. Thank you. You may not be a bird trainer, but your Pokemon trust you and fight for you just as ferociously. It was a disappointment, honestly, but after seeing all of these avians on your side of the battle... It just makes me all the more excited to ruffle some feathers. But don't think i'm not tempted to see if they have a plush-like version of a Pidgey."
Pidgeotto sorted indignantly and pushed his beak into Falkner's side affectionately. "Oh hush, you know no one can replace you two." vs Falkner Weather: Clear [attr="class","qkt-bkgd"] [attr="class","qkt-wild-pkmn"] [attr="class","qkt-clip"]Pidgeotto LV 15 HP 71% [34/48] [attr="class","qkt-wild-imgbox"] [attr="class","qkt-pkmn-img"] [attr="class","qkt-trainer-pkmn"] [attr="class","qkt-clip"]Larksong LV 12 HP 75% [27/36] [attr="class","qkt-trainer-imgbox"] [attr="class","qkt-pkmn-img"] Pidgeotto [Keen Eye]: -1 ATK Larksong Pillowsoft [Natural Cure]: -1 ACC SP30 Pidgeotto used Sand-Atack! Larksong was not fit for this battle, not with a skilled pidgeotto with the control of winds on his side. Larksong's wings were fluffy and soft and even if she hadn't been bred to be cuddly and cute her wings would still be fluffy and not made for fast aerial movements. Pidgeotto had no problems avoiding Larksong's poorly attempt to attack since his gust sent her whirling through the air as the cotton-like wings of her caught the wind and carried her off. She closed her eyes shut and tried to keep her wings close to her body to minimize how much it could throw her around, and she was gasping as she spread her wings again to regain control. "Right, of course you were," Larksong said dryly between her panting, "just get it over with so I don't have to endure this more than necessary, we both now how it will end anyway." She wanted to fight to make Lei happy but she knew when she was outmatched.
Lei groaned as Larksong got blown around with no chance of retaliating, she did not like her chances here. Her other pokemon surely would do better but she needed to find a way around that Roost and she had hoped that Larksong would have provided that. "Well I hope so, it's not like I haven't battled before," Lei said with a grin to Falkner and then sighend theatrically, "I doubt the stitches-looking feathers are going to slow her down but swablu's wings clearly aren't build for battling strong wings," she added as she watched her pokemon fight to regain control of her direction. She teasingly put her hands on her hips, "are you saying that people who aren't using flying types aren't good trainers?" She was quite surprised to hear he was disappointed she wasn't a bird trainer, but it made sense to her that he thought she had been one. The idea hadn't crossed her mind, that she could look like that to him.
"I'm going to disappoint more gym leaders along the way it seems," Lei said a bit thoughtfully before explaining, "you are the expert on flying types, how can I test my skill against you if I don't use flying types myself? If I just come with ice types or electric types I only show that I know about type advantages and then I don't learn anything. If the battle continues like this and I'm forced to go that road I'm considering myself as a failure in flying types." "As for the Pillowsoft breeds, they are bred for their looks and I'm testing out and do hope that they still have some of their battling skills, but I don't know yet," Lei warned and finally made a decision on what to order next.
"Larksong, you can do better than that, Fury Attack!" She called to her bird who sighed resigned before trying to build up some rage. The swablu tried to convince herself that Pidgeotto was the one to blame for her current situation and that Lei was displeased with her, so she could at least try get some revenge or something.

The evolved avian hovered above the disgruntled bluebird proudly. Large, strong wings flapping maybe even just a little bit louder just because he could. Pidgeotto's crown feathers lifted slightly with the defeatist attitude thrown back at him. The bird pokémon would certainly do as she asked, but would have preferred having a battle. He began whipping up another gust either way. Falkner, while not completely distracted from his pokémon, continued to pay more attention to his challenger. A potential sign of his trust in his father's birds. "No no," he quickly responded, not quite catching her teasing intent at first. The young gym leader's mind fumbled with an appropriate approach. Falkner's fluster was soothed in short order when she continued and he relaxed into a knowing smile. Which shifted to surprised intrigue as Lei spoke. "That's an interesting take..." he half mumbled. "I don't think anyone's come by with that sort of idea toward the challenges. At least..." he trailed off, about to admit how truly inexperienced he was in comparison to most of the other gym leaders with years more experience than him in the position. The young lad maneuvered around it. "Well, you'd be surprised how many kids come through and don't have much of a grasp on even just typings," chuckled Falkner. "It certainly speaks to your growth as a trainer. Being able to beat a leader within their own mastery is quite the challenge. Definitely a trait befitting a potential new league champion."The blue-haired lad grinned broadly, giving her a nod before taking a moment to watch the next exchange. Of which, went more favorably for Larksong. Pidgeotto wasn't expecting anything gung-ho from the odd swablu. Feeling safer than he was, he stayed put where he was and just released his attack. It did about as well as the last one, though as the wind dissipated a stray breeze from the gust uplifted Larksong into a perfectly aimed current. It was as if the universe was on her side. The stroke of luck not only put her on point but gave her a burst of speed just enough to catch Pidgeotto off-guard initially. Larksong's furious attack nipped the opposing bird's shoulder before he could pivot away, catching the rest of the blows on his stomach before he managed to rise and gain distance. vs Falkner Weather: Clear [attr="class","qkt-bkgd"] [attr="class","qkt-wild-pkmn"] [attr="class","qkt-clip"]Pidgeotto LV 15 HP 35% [17/48] [attr="class","qkt-wild-imgbox"] [attr="class","qkt-pkmn-img"] [attr="class","qkt-trainer-pkmn"] [attr="class","qkt-clip"]Larksong LV 12 HP 56% [20/36] [attr="class","qkt-trainer-imgbox"] [attr="class","qkt-pkmn-img"] Pidgeotto [Keen Eye]: -1 ATK Larksong Pillowsoft [Natural Cure]: -1 ACC SP30 Pidgeotto used Gust! Lei grinned at how flustered she made Falkner, that was fun. She had thought all these leaders were stoic and serious so it was nice to spice things up with a bit of teasing, especially when her own pokemoner underperformed. "Really? But how can you test them if they only uses ice type for example?" Lei asked surprised, "Or are you all so skilled that trainers around here only dare do things like that since they don't think they can win otherwise?" Since she had learned that the Gym leaders only used one type she had found the idea strange, even as experts in their field they had to come short if facing types they were weak against. Unless they went with dual types they would run into problems at some point and then what would the test be really? It didn't occur to Lei that it could be a challenge for trainer's with fewer pokemon than herself, since it could be tough for one single pokemon to face several in a row even if it had type advantage. You would need to train that single pokemon a lot, or spent a lot of time training a whole group if one couldn't do it.
Lei smirked when Falkner praised her for her idea and will to challenge herself. "I have grown yes, I'm not really a kid anymore who tries this out for the first time," she declared with a grin, "things tend to look like something you have tried before if you don't look out of the box, and I find the world boring without a proper challenge." "I wonder if that challenge could still be used if I ever became a champion," she said thoughtfully but honestly didn't really wish for it, it sounded like being a Champion of a region meant a lot of work besides just the battles. "So what do you do yourself? Or is this," she gestured to the whole gym, "still so new it is enough of a challenge for you?" She asked.
Larksong didn't think she would ever get close enough to get a hit in on her big opponent, but as the wind caught her and lifted her up towards him her eyes widened. She narrowed her eyes and tried to think that the pidgeotto was the cause of all this, which he technically was, and she took full advantage of the help she was getting to use her beak furiously at his wing and side, until he pulled away. "I did it!" She chirped happily, she had actually managed to peck the pidgeotto like Lei wanted!
Larksong finally managed to get an attack in, and Lei nodded pleased. Finally. As always there were a risk of Falkner ordering another Roost but she really hated seeing her pokemon miss their attacks, so she recalled the swablu and let out her red pidgey again. "Air Cutter Sun!" Lei called her order, he should be able to keep up and get some hits in, so they could get this battle finished one way or another. Probably in her favor as she planned on using healing items if necessary.

"Ice types are pretty rare around here," Falkner initially responded, though that wasn't the focus of her question. He continued, "Though, to the point, I haven't shown you all of Pidgeotto's moves." There was a momentary pause as he adjusted a sleeve. "And that's cause it's unnecessary in this battle; ineffective even. So long as you're using birds." He kept a bit coy, as if the special move was a secret and not fairly well known to anyone who asked around. "Pidgeotto's special in his own way. Maybe not rare, but he's quite capable dealing with geodudes and mareeps." Falkner put a hand on his hip and beamed with pride. The bird on topic would have too, if it weren't for the battle ongoing. Though with the recall of the festive swablu the evolved pokemon would get a bit of a breather. "Take a moment to recoup Pidgeotto, then back on the offensive."With her talk of ice types Falkner wondered if now was the time for the decorative delibird hugging her space. Instead he was graced once again with the visage of the vibrant pidgey. His eyes lit up again. A tinge of jealousy in them. "Back to a classic match up then," he commented cheerily, eager to see more of what Sun Shadow could do. His own pidgey was no match. Now he could see how the exotic variant compared to its standard evolved form. He took a deep breath, delaying answer to her inquiry into his life direction. She made her own sound so much more grand and interesting than his simple life. The two birds went at it. Pidgeotto sticking with the only viable attack it had versus another avian and Sun Shadow elegantly putting into action his special move. "I wouldn't say it's new," the gym leader finally began, "I've been doing outreach and helping my father for years. Bird keeping is a passion, and there's always something new to learn about them. Especially when discoveries from other regions finally reach Johto."
"Regional variants... Special breeds... It's almost an endless cycle. Not to mention mastering new combinations to allow my birds to overcome, or at least challenge, their weaknesses. As you said, wouldn't be much of a gym leader if we didn't have a way to deal with challengers who just tried to use type advantage against us."vs Falkner Weather: Clear [attr="class","qkt-bkgd"] [attr="class","qkt-wild-pkmn"] [attr="class","qkt-clip"]Pidgeotto LV 15 HP 42% [20/48] [attr="class","qkt-wild-imgbox"] [attr="class","qkt-pkmn-img"] [attr="class","qkt-trainer-pkmn"] [attr="class","qkt-clip"]Sun Shadow LV 15 HP 51% [21/41] [attr="class","qkt-trainer-imgbox"] [attr="class","qkt-pkmn-img"] Pidgeotto [Keen Eye]: -1 ATK Sun Shadow [Keen Eye]: Normal SP++ Larksong switched with Sun Shadow! Lei nodded, it was not cold enough in the areas she had been in for many ice type, she didn't remember having seen any but there were a lot of other types she hadn't seen either. It wasn't a thing that surprised her as she was used to ice types being scarce, and while she could easily have gotten more than she had, she had quickly learned that not all did very well in the heat of Alola. She nodded to Falkner's praising of his bird, and since he mentioned two electric types she guessed the secret move must be a ground one, now it wouldn't be effective against her birds. If that move also had something that could lover their visibility, she was glad she only had had Sand Attack to deal with. Lei on the other hand had a bit of trouble figuring out how this was an answer to her question on how he made sure he was a challenge. "Soo, you are saying that your tactic is to have this secret move, which handles your type disadvantage to what people usually brings to challenge you?" She said thoughtfully as she tried to get it to make sense. She was certain that move was a ground one now, and if he never met any ice types she could see how that helped him a lot. "It must be kind of predictable what people brings then, how do they get past that unexpected counter?" Lei asked curious and missed that it was probably what was interesting about being a gym leader, to see how people worked around difficulties and with their pokemon. Lei would probably quickly find that boring too though.
Lei huffed as Falkner got his pidgeotto to heal up again as Sun Shadow appeared, she had expected that. Sun Shadow lived up to her expectations and fought through the winds sent at him to deliver his own. She got distracted momentarily when Falkner began talking again to answer her question and she smirked. "Air Cutter Sun, and don't hold back!" She called out and watched as her bird began to beat his wings repeatedly. "Sounds like a lot of work," she called out to the gym leader with a grin.

"It can be for sure," he spoke in reply to the predictability of challengers. "It forces them to change strategies. Thinking on the fly as unexpected things come up is a necessary skill going forward, so we're happy to teach them that lesson here. Right Pidgeotto?" the young lad gleamed. His evolved bird cawed proudly in support. "Making use of items or supportive moves, learning team synergies... It's interesting to see what everyone comes up with," Falkner went on to list some examples. Afterward he became more focused. As stunning as Sun Shadow was the bird was a formidable foe. Last time the scarlet pidgey was on the field was but for a brief moment so it was hard to judge just where on the power scale the petite bird was. With pidgeys of his own he was quite aware of a predicament he could end up with should he not be careful. Pidgeotto was quick, but had no means of hastening himself like his common counterparts. Falkner seemed to be quiet for some time as he pondered. His decision here very well could set the tone for the rest of the match if he wasn't careful. But he had to make a decision. Lei's voice signaled his times up. The youthful gym leader decided to err on the side of a strong offense. "Keep at it Pidgeotto," he instructed. But luck would not be on his side as the cardinal pidgey certainly did not hold anything back. Flying through the gust that Pidgeotto supplied Sun Shadow managed to land yet another decisive blow that nearly knocked the larger bird out of the air. Somehow the gym pokémon remained conscious, catching himself a couple feet before the floor. Lei's bird wasn't in great shape either. vs Falkner Weather: Clear [attr="class","qkt-bkgd"] [attr="class","qkt-wild-pkmn"] [attr="class","qkt-clip"]Pidgeotto LV 15 HP 4% [2/48] [attr="class","qkt-wild-imgbox"] [attr="class","qkt-pkmn-img"] [attr="class","qkt-trainer-pkmn"] [attr="class","qkt-clip"]Sun Shadow LV 15 HP 22% [9/41] [attr="class","qkt-trainer-imgbox"] [attr="class","qkt-pkmn-img"] Pidgeotto [Keen Eye]: -1 ATK Sun Shadow [Keen Eye]: Normal SP30 Pidgeotto used Gust! "Yes! That's the way you do it!" Lei exclaimed and raised a hand in victory as Sun Shadow carried himself through the gusting winds and sent the pidgeotto down to count. But then Pidgeotto spread its wings and avoided crashing into the ground. Lei laughed, this was why she liked to battle, the excitement and to see the pokemon fight with all they got. She looked at the red pidgey who was flapping to keep airborne, he certainly was worth keeping around even though he looked rather battered by now. "Sun, get back here!" She called and grinned to Falkner as she waited for her bird to return. Sun Shadow made a sharp twist and soared down to land on the ground beside her. He was fine being called back and getting a break now. "Sun Shadow certainly is more than just a pretty look!" Lei called to the gym leader, "although he still needs some training to be up to your standarts," she added with a gesture towards pidgeotto. She was really impressed with how it had saved itself in the last second and made sure it stayed in the battle. She was certain that Falkner was going to get his bird to roost again, no matter if she healed or switched Sun Shadow out but she had to do something now Pidgeotto was the fastest of the two.
Lei bent down and pulled a bottle from her bag and popped it open. "Open up Sun," she ordered as she held the water ready to pour down his beak, he looked surprised at her especially since she hesitated and looked thoughtful for a moment. Pidgeotto was the fastest but.. Sun Shadow had a chance to be faster even though it was a risk. Lei grinned, she liked risks and Sun Shadow had been good at hitting his target so as long as Pidgeotto didn't last. She pulled the bottle back and Sun Shadow looked even more perplexed as she leaned over him with a mischievously look at Pidgeotto. "Quick Attack!" She whispered to him and gestured for him to go. He hesitated a bit confused of why she had called him back in the first place, but then took a few steps and set off. Lei straightened as she watched her little bird race off in incredible speed. He would either take Pidgeotto down, or if it had more determination and energy left, be taken down by it afterwards. But that was what you had healing items for.

For a moment he felt himself breath a sigh of relief. His worry didn't seem like it was going to be warranted considering his decision to stay on the offense for a tad bit longer. As Lei called for her bird to return he grinned. "Great recovery Pidgeotto, you're due for another Roost." Pidgeotto happily set himself down on the floor, almost too worn out to even begin the rejuvenation process. "Those are some stunning hits!" he called over to his challengers. "Sun Shadow's definitely more than just pretty plumage," he agreed, laughing a little. The gym leader felt even more at ease as it looked like Lei was going to spend some time doing a bit of healing herself. But then it all came crashing down. Instead of the potion application, Sun Shadow shot forward like a red bullet. Pidgeotto had only just been able to center himself mentally to being the roosting process. Falkner's eyes went wide. This was it. This was what he was afraid of. He'd gambled the prized bird had forgotten this move in favor of one of some special breeding one like the air cutter. His gamble did not pay off. Sun Shadow easily knocked the larger bird out with one final quick attack, leaving Falkner staring in shock for just a couple seconds. "Well, that was certainly a surprise," he almost huffed. It was clear he was a little disappointed as he recalled his father's pidgeotto. He took a deep breath and mumbled something to himself. Looking back to the striking red bird though, how could he possibly not be happy. "Defeated with my own specialty! Not often that happens," he praised, a bit more chipper. "Congratulations Lei, Sun Shadow, and all your other special birds." Falkner smiled as he walked closer, hands digging into a large pocket to pull out a small ornate box. Once he was close he opened it up to show her the badge inside. "You just earned yourselves the first league badge: Zephyr." He let that set in for a couple seconds before also handing her some cash and a TM disk. "And take this too. It's Roost." VICTORY! Sun Shadow grew to LV 19 thanks to Lucky Egg and gained +1 Happiness! (+2) He's trying to learn Whirlwind; forget an old move? Larksong grew to LV 13 and gained +1 Happiness! (+1) Astraea grew to LV 17 and gained +1 Happiness! (+1) Et watched studiously and grew to LV 11! WHAT'S THIS!?! Sun Shadow's trying to evolve; allow it? Falkner was defeated! Lei received: Zephyr Badge TM51 Roost £1560

"Hah!" Lei exclaimed and raised her hands over her head. Then she started laughing over how silly it was such common move should give her the victory. She turned to bask in the cheers from the small audience on the side and waved happily to them. It had been too long since she had participated in a battle which had actually been important and won it, with an audience. Lei turned with a smile to Falkner as he came over and congratulated her for her victory. "Thank you!" She said beamingly, "It was a close call but it was fun, this is how a real battle should be, so thank you." Her face lit up when she saw her prize and she waved the TM in front of Falkner, "this one can really be a game changer," she told him with a wink. She put it in her pocket and studied the badge for a bit, she liked it and wondered where she could have it so she best could show off her accomplishment. For now she put it on the front of her shirt until she found a better way to show it off.
"It's the only way to do it, now I can say that I truly has won your challenge and can call myself an expert in battling with flying types," Lei declared with a smile and touched the Zephyr Badge. Her eyes flicked to something behind Falkner and her smile widened as light flashed up by Sun Shadow's evolution. Could this day get any better? Lei called in all her pokemon except her pidgeotto whom she gestured to come and land on her shoulder. Sun hesitated but then flapped up to try, it was anything but graceful but he did manage to land and Lei suppressed a wince as his talons dug into her skin. "I hope the other Gym Leaders are as skilled as you," Lei said and half bowed as farewell before she strolled out of the gym with Sun struggling to stay on her shoulder. The moment she got out she shooed him off and got him to follow her instead.
