With night settling over the riverbed, a cluster of Poliwag began to wander curiously to the water's surface. A few bubbles tentatively broke the surface. Then, Leilani's line heaved: she whipped back her fishing rod to come face-to-face with the fattest bug-eyed Poliwag she'd likely ever see. Lei suppressed a yawn as she the hook and lure was drawn in all the way and she pulled it out of water, he looked at it tiredly and allowed herself to yawn deeply and she rubbed an eye. She had lost count on how long since she last had hooked something and while the other fishers had mostly caught magikarps, some of them had been more lucky and getting more interesting thing on the hook. Lei looked at them, no one had left from what she could tell, but she was tempted at the moment as this was so dull, and it was cold and she was bored. The warm bed back at her hotel was calling for her although it would be a long walk back to Cherrygrove. She could of course go to Violet and find something there but it felt like giving up, and she wanted to show all this fish crazy people that she could do just as well as they could, and that she wouldn't give up when they hadn't. It meant there must still be something good out there, right?
Lei sighed and stretched her cold body and moved around to warm up, the glanced at N and Littlelight who was both sleeping, or looked to be doing it. Lei could only see the surroundings of their shapes and no light shone in the dark. She turned away from them. She narrowed her eyes at the rock a bit further out and drew the arm with the rod back as she took aim. She had seen that there were seaweed between the rock and the bank and she had been trying to hit that area for quite some time by now. The lure flew and a little splash marked it hit the water. "Yes!" Lei celebrated quietly and clenched her fist, she did it! It was a bit too close but the direction had been good and it surely would have hit close to the seaweed, it might hide something good. "I wonder if light could lure something up?" Lei mused quietly as she slowly began roll in the line and the lure, pulling it temptingly through the water.
Something bit! Lei heaved and something very round was pulled out of water. Lei stared at its round eyes as it flew through the air and bellydropped on the land before it. "Poli.." Lei mumbled as she tried to remember what it was called, she had seen it before back home although it was certainly not everywhere. It was something new though, rather than the magikarps so she definitively wanted to catch it. "Ling, time to yawn," Lei whispered her order the moment the chingling had materialized, she pulled a pokeball from her pocket and waited until her psychic had done as she had wished and then flung it at the tadpole. Lei did not notice how quiet the other fishers had become, granted they had been quiet before but they had all stopped fishing to stare at the glittering poliwag Lei had pulled up.

Having a foreign Pokemon up close, the Poliwag responded on instinct, swinging its tail around and across Ling's face. It didn't do much: Ling absorbed the hit and let out a high, hypnotic chime. This served to panic the Poliwag more. It puffed up its belly defensively but the time it took standing there was time took hearing Chingling's Yawn. It dwindled in a state of half-sleep... Lei still hadn't noticed the gleam of this poliwag but to be fair, it was dark and she had yet to run into one by herself. She had a few' shinies already, but they were all bought from others, it wasn't a thing which happened often and many could go through their whole lives without seeing even a glimpse of one. The pokeball striked true, of course but the poliwag wasn't having any of it. Even in its sleepy state it managed to break free and it scattered the remains of the pokeball everywhere. The tension in the air rose and a few of the fishers carefully made their way closer as they did not want to miss the outcome of this and probably hoped for a chance themselves, should Lei fail entirely. Lei sighed and closed her eyes before she sent out another pokemon right in front of Ling, who jingled as he jumped backwards to make space. The torkoal blinked and squinted as she tried to see anything in the dark, she had no idea of what she was facing but at least knew her trainer well enough that she must be facing something. The smell of water and the sound of waves lazily lapping at the cliff was not very reassuringly but she stood her ground and waited patiently.
Lei was really just buying time and Agate she knew she could count on, the poliwag had turned at the flash so if nothing else it had kept it from running away for the time being. It's reaction she couldn't see, and she didn't care as long as she could hit it with another pokeball, which better had to do the trick.

The poliwag began to stir and Lei clenched her jaw, she had miscalculated with how effective the yawn was, or perhaps the poliwag had just more fighting spirit than she had expected of a pokemon of that size. It suddenly made it all a bit interesting although the poliwag killed that too by almost not fighting the pokeball. "Oh well," She said and shrugged and took a step towards the pokeball. A cheer erupted behind her and she jumped and spun around, all the fishers stood and clapped and cheered and she stared at them like they had gone crazy. "How lucky can you be?! That is what most of us have hoped just to catch a glimps of!" One of them exclaimed cheerfully. "Yeah, just so typical, a noob coming and getting all luck," another said and leered at Lei's old rod, he himself had one which certainly had cost a lot of money, and had a lot of gadgets to help get the best catch. Another gave him a light shove and stepped out in front of him, "don't mind him, he just sees it as a competition and is a sore loser, may I see it close up?"Lei looked suspiciously at them as she tried to figure out what was going on. If they were playing a trick on her they were doing it very well, but her catch couldn't be that exciting, several of the others had poliwags themselves and this one hadn't even been very big. "I have fished before back home, but luck is a big part of it," Lei said casually and looked at the small pokeball in her hand, and explained she would need to make some chances to her team to make room for it. She recalled her pokemon and only took slight notice of Ling's new form having missed his flash of evolution entirely. It only took her about 10 minutes to go back to Violet and change the team around, 15 minutes when she included the time to call out said poliwag to see if she could see anything special about it, but she couldn't. Now she was curious to learn what the fishers were so excited about with this otherwise normal looking pokemon. When she returned they hadn't gone back to fishing but was standing in small groups chatting with each other, it stopped when she arrived and they quickly gathered around her to swooned over the poliwag. It was firs when one mentioned it was shiny that it clicked for Lei and she was glad it was so dark that the others couldn't see her expression. The anglers were too occupied with the confused looking poliwag. "Yeah, that doesn't happen often! It's really subtle isn't it?" She said as a little voice still doubted it, the tadpole might had a slight sheen to it but she would never have guessed it was a shiny. "Yeah! You really have to know what to look for!" One of the others exclaimed and eagerly began to point out all the little signs which gave it away. It took quite some time before they got back to fishing, Lei had no idea since it was dark and she didn't bring a watch. She was rather dazed as she slowly reeled in the line trying to lure anything to her from below the surface. It felt unreal, she hadn't really understood it yet that she had encountered a shiny pokemon purely by accident and that she had actually caught it! She had a few shinies herself already but they had all been bought, finding one yourself was incredible rare and not something she had ever thought she would experience. She pulled up the empty lure without really thinking and threw it aimlessly out again. Wordcount: 633 (ooc: Ling evolves and is replaced by poliwag, which I have corrected to be shiny. Something came flopping up onto the beach shorelines. It was a strangely colored Magikarp - all golden and beautiful. The oddly colored fished flipped and flopped in all sorts of directions as it tried to make its way back to the murky deeps of the watery lake. A Wild Magikarp✯ [Level 8] Appeared! What will Lei do? +0.5 to rod! Shiny Check:4w78vnw01-42Magikarp level 8 1-42

It was no wonder it was just a magikarp who found the uninteresting lure interesting enough to bite on, since Lei for once didn't pull it alluringly through the water as she had done before. It just bobbed up and down along with the waves, getting an occasional jerk as some part of her brain remembered she was supposed to be fishing and not just stare out into the dim light and try wrap her head around that she had really found and caught a real shiny pokemon. All on her own. That of course wasn't that surprisingly, but that she had been that lucky was hard to believe and she pinched herself again to test if she was dreaming. It felt so unreal standing here. She still wasn't really sure it had been shiny, perhaps the anglers had been playing tricks on her.
No matter how boring the lure moved it was enough for a magikarp, or at least this magikarp. The reasons to why it decided to test it more or less dead looking food would go unanswered. Perhaps it was really hungry, or perhaps it was curious and wanted to investigate what this new thing was? Perhaps it wanted to get another life than what it already had and saw the lure as its ticket out of there! Or perhaps it was just stupid, Lei sadly would assume the latter no matter the circumstances.
Lei snapped back to the present when her pole jerked and she reacted without thinking. "You gotta be kidding me!" A voice shouted as Lei's jaw dropped at the sight of the golden fish which was flying through the air. While the poliwag easily could go for a normal looking one, a shiny magikarp certainly couldn't be mistaken for anything else than what it was. A storm of exclamations was heard and Lei, half fearing someone would steal her catch, let out Little, ordered a Thunder Shock which was obeyed as the pichu saw it as a great defense against the rather big fish falling straight at her, and Lei hurled a pokeball at the shiny.

Lei blinked in the sudden darkness after the flash of both the electric attack and the pokeball. She strained her ears as she listened to where the pokeball could have ended up and for the ding which would confirm the capture. She could feel the tense in the air and found it hard to breath, knowing all the other fishers were watching her and the pokeball intently. They all exhaled at the same time when that sound vibrated through the dark and Lei rubbed her eyes in an attempt to get rid of the dancing spots. She was keenly aware that the other fishers didn't come over to congratulate her as last time, having run into two shinies in a row while looking like she was a first time angler herself with a disgrace of a rod when you were around people who had helped you start and taken you to their spot.. well Lei didn't feel welcome any more. She didn't know them and they were a group, who knew what they would do if they felt she played unfair.
Lei managed to see enough to snatch up the pokeball containing the magikarp and she quickly pocketed, she took a deep breath and then turned to the others. A few were walking towards her while the others stayed behind and watched, Lei straightened her back and waited to hear what they had to say. "Ah lass, that's some luck you got there," one of the anglers said and smiled through his big beard, Lei allowed herself to relax a bit. "What is your secret?" The woman who was with him said with a little laugh, "we are meeting here every week and sharing our knowledge about technics, equipments and places, and you not only managed to see a shiny, you reeled not one, but two in and caught both!" Bitterness had crawled into her voice and the man gave her a gentle nudge. The woman rubbed her arm and looked down, "I'm sorry, but its just so unbelievable lucky. How did you do it?" She asked quietly and Lei looked kindly at her. "I don't know," Lei said honestly, "I don't really dare believe it myself yet, but if its true I'm just got filthy lucky and will probably only be able to catch ratattas from the rest of my life!" She laughed and the two fishers joined in genuinely and seemed to relax a bit. "I do think I have surpassed my welcome though, so I think I'll call it a night and leave you the spot," She added seriously and the two nodded, relief clear in their faces.
As Lei walked along the road the thought of what had happened slowly settled in her mind, and a smirk spread on her face as she straightened. She had caught a shiny, she had caught two shinies! She had fished them up before the so-called skilled fishers had lured them in, but of course when it came to pokemon she was just that good. It was not like she was a complete noob when it came to fishing as she had done plenty back in Alola, imagine what she could do if she got a proper rod instead of the old ugly one she had now? She eyed the water which glinted in moonlight beyond the trees and then couldn't withstand the temptation any longer. It was like if you had won on a lotto ticket, then you hoped you might get as lucky next time and bought another. Lei had said she would leave the others their spot but she hadn't said she would stop fishing, and who knew, her luck might continue? She could brag about having gotten two shinies, but imagine if she could brag about having caught three! It was rather low tied here still but she scrambled out on a tree which had fallen half out into the sea and threw out the line eagerly.

Lei narrowed her eyes as the water continued to shimmer, although it began to seem like it was underwater and not just the reflection of the moon. Her eyes widened when she realized it was swimming straight towards her lure and a moment later it hooked itself, and Lei felt a tingling up through the fishing pole in her arms. What was going on?! She heaved at the pole unceremoniously which usually probably would have made the pokemon let go and her losing the catch, but this was clung stubbornly and Lei threw the pole like she had got shocked the moment the fish landed on the ground. Lei stared at the blue fish with two shining antennaes, she let out Kauko, "keep it entertained!" She snapped and pulled out her pokedex to look it up. "Chinchou," she said slowly as she read up about it, "no wonder it tickled, it must have sent electricity up through the rod, little bastard," Lei mumbled and narrowed her eyes at the fish. "Could get pretty useful though, when I go surfing," she added thoughtfully, having a fish which could easily swim around and still be super effective against all other fish, that wasn't a bad idea. "Keep it in!" Lei snapped at Kauko when she saw the chinchou flopped towards the waters edge, "Struggle bug or something! Keep its attention!" She watched as her shuckle did his best to lunge at the fish and then hurled a pokeball at it, hoping she'd be lucky once again.
Kauko popped out and spread his arms over his head and put a dumb smile on his face, the chinchou watched him suspiciously. "Hi, you have spotted me among all the other greens, that is well done," he said and the chinchou stared like he was crazy. "You are not green!" it protested and Kauko chuckled, "no part of me is blue, that is true." The blue fish stared at him for a bit more, then shook its head and began to try work its way back towards the water, Lei called out to Kauko with some orders. "Hey wait, don't you want to join us? If you like battles I'm sure you'd like it," Kauko called out cheerfully and the chinchou paused to glare back at him, "that was my initial plan, but you are just too weird." Lei called out again, and Kauko had to drop his "leaves" and let his arms drop, "I can give you a battle, Razor Leaf here we go!" He declared as he pushed himself forward and struggled against the chinchou to keep it on land.
Wordcount: 437 (ooc: Kauko "the oddish" is using Struggle Bug and then Lei throws a pokeball. I have gotten confirmed that my fishing level wasn't updated, so I have added +1 to it (since chinchou was uncommon. If the capture is successful, I'd like to use my multiplier in Kauko)

Things just clapped exactly like Lei imagined it, but again, why wouldn't it? It was not like she was superstitious and thought she could get things to happen for her, she had the same options as everyone else. She was just really good at taking advantage of what life offered, and if others didn't fare so well they could just open their eyes or train themselves better. Lei had wanted Kauko to do a bit of damage before she caught the pokemon, and that was of course just what happened. Her pokemon did as envisioned and the wild pokemon complied and stayed in the ball as it was supposed to. Lei blinked in the sudden darkness after the flash of the pokeball, she recalled Kauko and strolled over to collect her newest pokemon. It wasn't anything special of course, it could have been fun to get something not usually seen around here, but you couldn't be lucky all the time. It wasn't one she had in the pokedex so she was pleased. A yawn pressed on and Lei gave in, it was probably time to get back to a bed.
