Meeting upon the old couple again, Alex had been informed that the trial this time would be different. However, they weren't giving much of a clue or hint on how different it would be. He was handed a special wooden token that reminded him of the Cleanse Tag before entering the Dark Cave. The last time he had been to Dark Cave was a long time ago, and he vaguely remember battling a Zubat and a Bronzor from it. There were probably other Pokemon, but they weren't as common as Zubat, nor as unusual as a Bronzor. As if that wasn't strange enough, he also heard a strange noise speaking telepathically to him. Was this the difference the couple was talking about? He wasn't sure. He kept on walking though, to see what the trial would await him. Hopefully, this time, the guide wouldn't run away like that Cottonee.

Indeed, upon stepping towards the cave he would hear a strange voice in his mind. Thought where it came from was not immediately obviously. At least, not until there was a flicker of light and a small form appeared at the cave entrance, somber and poised, much like a guardian or guide might be expected to be. "Your trial will commence once you step foot in the cave. Its darkness will consume you and all you take with you. There is no hiding; no escape. The powerful will turn and the group must survive. Once begun the only way out is to reach the pedestal and take control of the darkness, or succumb to it."Around its little hand, a ball of psychic energy formed. The ralts lead the way into the cave, the darkness suffocating and dense, with an intensity that was undeniable. It was familiar, however. The darkness was tinged with a malevolent evil that haunted a certain memory that would arise in his mind—that of a shrine deep in a forest and the beast that cursed the guardian within. If he tried to produce any light himself, with flash or flame or even his phone, the light would not penetrate the gloom. "The darkness here is a curse. However...I sense something about you that might aid us in keeping it at bay. Or perhaps upon your person. Would you lend it to me?"

A glow of light appeared in front of Alex, and revealed itself to be a Ralts who was telepathically communicating to him. He listened carefully to the instruction given by the psychic type. He wasn't sure what some of the instruction cryptic message meant, so he would have to step foot in the Dark Cave to find out. Not to mention, he was here in the first place to take on the trial, otherwise, he wouldn't even come back all the way to Violet City in the first place!
He felt a strange... heaviness, but it was familiar. He was jogging his memory trying to remember what or why the feeling was familiar. The cave at least was visibly dark, but it just felt darker than usual. Unable to figure out what happened though, the Ralts had a strange request too. "Uh, sure, give me a moment." He replied, and began digging through his bag in the dark. He wasn't sure what the small Pokemon was asking, but even in the dark he could at least feel contents in his bag.
First, it was a bunch of plastic like feeling, so they're probably potions or lemonade. Then, there was glass feeling, so maybe it was the Soda Pop or Moomoo Milk. Then, he felt a bunch of cold metal on his hands, and given how spherical they felt, with a spent protrusion on one spot, he figured those were various Pokeballs and variations inside his bag. Then, he felt a bunch of rocky and almost sharp texture, and figured those were his gems. Next, he felt a bunch of almost squishy but not too squishy objects, and deduced those to be berries he carried in his bags. Then, he felt the outline of the Johto Map's wrinkly papers, the funky shape of the Sprinklotad, the case for many TM and HM he had on hand, the retractable fishing rod that's been sitting in his bag.
Then, he felt all of those things again in different order because he shuffled the objects around. Then, other objects that were textured not like those items, and then something soft and sandy in a bag-- that's probably the bright powder. Then, something sticky and feel yucky-- that might be the Black Sludge he should give to one of his part poison type Pokemon. Then, he felt something rectangular and wooden.
It was a Cleanse Tag he obtained in Ilex Forest. He withdrew it from his bag and showed to the Ralts, asking if that was the thing it was looking for.

“Thank you for this. It will aid us greatly on this mission.” Ralts spoke inside of Alex’s mind. When he extended the Cleanse Tag in offering to Ralts, the small Pokemon easily plucked it from Alex’s hands. Ralts spun around towards the darkness in the moody cave and held the tag up into the air. “Try to stay close behind.” Ralts warned, pressing through the darkness as it led the way. Something lurked in the shadows. A powerful force whose presence could be felt but couldn’t be seen. Ralts stopped, eyes widened with worry, and turned to stare off down an unknown path, before hurrying along the way. It urged Alex to keep up and tried to out-pace the strange, foreboding feeling that lurked within the cave. “Hurry! It knows we’re here and it’s after us!” Ralts squealed loudly in alarm. Try as they might, they wouldn’t escape the foreboding feeling that slipped through the air itself and into Alex’s team. It searched inside of each of his Pokemon, then selected the large beaver with a thick, paddle-like tail. Beav appeared in the blink of an eyes, his eyes glowing with some strange, dark energy. “It’s taken ahold of your friend! You need to calm him down and help him regain himself before it’s too late!” Ralts warned. Beav hissed, narrowing his eyes angrily, and readied himself to lash out at Alex. Beav is being controlled! Alex needs to calm Beav's spirit down with a battle! Who will he send out?

Alex didn't say anything when the Ralts thanked him for letting it borrow the Cleanse Tag. He was just basically watching things unfolded before him. He could feel the heavy presence of the darkness. He thought they have vanquished the darkness in the Ilex Forest, could there be another one hiding in the Dark Cave this whole time? Or perhaps, this was a different darkness that just lived in the Dark Cave? How does this work? His fleeting thoughts were interrupted by the psychic type urging him to run or walk faster. He wasn't the type to do either one of those, so he struggled along.
He didn't get too far when he was feeling his lungs burning and wanting to pant like a Herdier running out of breath. As if his physical state wasn't bad enough right now, a flash of light appeared from his pocket, as the Bibarel popped outside of his own Pokeball. He knew that his Pokemon don't usually do this, so it must be something with the Dark Cave! It looked angry and aggressive, if not possessed already. Ralts had also warned that Beav was possessed!
Alex grabbed a Pokeball and hurled out a Pokemon to calm Beav down. "Tikikala, come out and use Razor Leaf!" He hollered and summoned his Bayleef. The herbal dinosaur appeared and lowered his head, sending out a flurry of leaves with razor sharp edges toward the opponent.

Tiki was summoned to face down the enraged bibarel that he knew as a companion and teammate. There wasn't the same friendliness in those suddenly focused and vengeful eyes. The beaver looked rabid and ready to maul everyone he could sink his teeth into. Perhaps taking advantage of his friend's surprise, Beav lunged for Tiki and slammed headfirst into the bayleef, the attack right to the sensitive spots that the bayleef hadn't yet found the bearings to guard. It hurt. A lot. He retaliated with razor sharp leaves and a wince, breathing through his nose. The moody beaver paced, his stride becoming quicker. Swifter. Lighter. Suddenly, he was lunging again, seemingly twice as fast as before, and slammed hard into the bayleef. That blow was almost enough to knock his companion out cold, but the bayleef held strong, flaring his head leaf and focusing all his desperation to save his teammate into the next attack! Then it was over. Those sharp leaves knocked the bibarel out and they were left in darkened silence. The ralts hurried forth and checked over the two combatants and quietly chanted. Beav roused, looking confused and sore. And Tiki looked a little refreshed despite previously being on the cusp. "That is all I can do," Ralts said, swaying a bit. "I have healed them now that the possession has passed. Be wary as you venture onward..."
Bayleef knocked out Bibarel!

The Bibarel became ravenous looking after it was possessed. Alex's Bayleef stood between them, but was hit quickly from the normal type's headbutt before he could do anything to stop the maddening beaver. The grass type yelped in pain from the impact, and was able to shake off the pain enough to lower his head to unleash a Razor Leaf. The Bibarel came crashing again, this time boosted from his moodiness, and left the Bayleef hanging by a thread. With one last Razor Leaf, the Bayleef knocked the possessed Bibrael unconscious.
The psychic type came over and healed the fallen Bibarel, but it wasn't strong enough to bring the formerly possessed Pokemon to full health. It's alright though, as Alex have plenty of healing items he had acquired throughout his journey. He thanked the Ralts, "Thank you for healing my Pokemon. Now, what do you mean by that?" Then, he quickly pulled out two bottles of Fresh Water that he gave to his Pokemon.

"Because, human, your trial has only just begun. This is a small measure of what you will face," Ralts warned. "Now come. We have almost reached the altar." The little pokemon lead the way and the air became colder and mustier. There was an eerie stillness to the air. Like they had entered a tomb. Ralts would pause in a doorway and the ball of psychic energy would fly from its palm and split into quarters, each little orb darting to rest in a small hanging cage in each corner that would normally bear a fire. It offered just enough of a glow to reveal a broken stone altar and the totem amulet resting amongst the ruined wreckage. As soon as the human stepped in, a sinister laugh would fill the room. "There is no escape for you now." A hideous voice that sounded like many layered upon another cackled. "This room will be your tomb!" A strange purple smoke poured from the stone before swirling back together into a churning mass of violet-and-neon green.
The [LV 25] Totem Spiritomb appeared! Totem will start with +1 SP ATK

Alex hummed as the Ralts explained the trial had just began. He thought that was an interesting introduction to the trial. He patiently waited as the psychic type sent some psychic energy orb to the altar. Then, he heard a maniacal and obnoxious, and malevolent sounding laughter. It was coming from a Pokemon he had recognized, a Spitiromb. Although this one was more malevolent than the one he had procured from the Dig Site in Ruins of Alph.
"Hey, I am not trying to die here! Tikikala, use Poison Powder!" He grabbed a Pokeball and hurled it to face the ghostly presence. He hadn't battle with a Spiritomb before, so he wasn't sure what to expect, but knowing that this was also an Alolan trial, he figured it would be a little difficult. Perhaps, poisoning would be helpful for his victory, if the scattering purple powder hits.

"Who says you have a choice in the matter? I will reap your soul and add it to my collection~" The spiritomb cackled, its sinister expression becoming even nastier as it started to mutter to itself all the vile things it would do to Alex's immortal soul once it was victorious. Though whether it could or would should he lose here...well, that was up to interpretation. Surely the nice alolan couple wouldn't seriously lead trainer's to their doom over an amulet collect-a-thon...right? So focused on its wicked thoughts and schemes, it didn't even notice the purple powder settling over its form. Not until it started to cough and choke. Weird that a ghost had that reflex. Its rippling form writhed for a moment and it sneered at Alex, "You will pay for that, you fool." "Why does every ghost beings say the same thing? I've heard the same thing from the ghosts in Ilex Forest. Can't you like, say something new?" Alex wasn't fond of ghostly beings like this Spiritomb, but his interaction with the Ilex Forest ghosts had made him a little less scared of them. He wasn't comfortable with them yet, but at least he knew how to have a conversation with them now.
Thankfully his Bayleef managed a Poison Powder on the opponent, and this would be helpful to take down the menacing Spiritomb. The ghost Pokemon coughed from the purply poisonous powders, but it also did a weird spectral thing as the cloud of spirits swirled around it. It wasn't attacking his Bayleef yet, but nevertheless, it did something to prepare itself, and Alex wasn't sure how strong this Pokemon would be.
"Go for a Razor Lead, Tikikala!" He shouted at his Pokemon, who then immediately lowered his head to send forth a flurry of razor sharp leaves. He wasn't sure if his Pokemon could handle this Spiritomb, but there was only hope.

"Well sorry not being creative, ya brat! I'm a monster, not a frickin' storyteller!" the Totem hissed. The nerves of kids nowadays, not appreciating classic horror story monster dialogue. Now he really did wanna snatch this brat's soul and go back to doing his thing. Stupid elderly couple, roping him into their stupid little challenge. Bayleef let loose a flurry of leaves, sinking into the shadowy void that comprised the Spiritomb's body. The leaves hit, though they seemed to burn up or rot and wither away as soon as they reached the weird soul-like mass that was his body. Each time one of the leaves died, they turned into purple energy that was consumed by the Spiritomb's fanged maw. Then, he launched this energy back out in the form of a shadowy blast. The blast hit Tikikala, the blast singing across the dinosaur's body. It wasn't a flame, but it almost seemed to burn like one, the Spiritomb converting the energy from the attack used against it to strike back at its opponent. The Spiritomb laughed through the poison-induced coughs, "Now do you see what you're up against, little boy? "You... could be a creative monster." Alex stammered initially as a response, as he wasn't enjoying talking with a ghostly Pokemon anyways. Then, he watched as his Pokemon summoned a flurry of leaves at the Spiritomb. Even though it wasn't like a super effective move, if this ghost type had a disadvantage, it helped to wear down the opponent's stamina, which would help the poison to wear it out. The ghost type responded by openning its mouth to fire a blast of dark energy. The grass dinosaur took a hit and slide backward on the cavern ground for a few feet, but he quickly got into his feet and regained balance.
The spectral monster coughed from the poison, but still continued to mock Alex. "Was that a Dark Pulse or what? What am I up against? Do you want me to run or there's no escape? Please make up your mind! You don't sound that scary when you can't keep it together. Now, Tikikala, use Synthesis!"
Even though the cave was dark and in the absence of a sun, the grass type stood calmly and proudly on the ground and closed his eyes. In his meditation, his green scales glowed bright green as the whole body glowed. A few moments later, he could feel his stamina and strength returned.

Spiritomb seethed from his weird rocky little home. Where'd that old couple find this kid, suddenly everyone was a frickin' critic. "Stupid kids and their superhero movies, they don't appreciate real genuine art and terror anymore," the Totem grumbled under his breath in between his coughing fits. Damage and poison were beginning to wear on his stamina, and there was no way of getting around it. He could only hope to do as much damage to this snotty kid as he could before he fell. "No, you little cretin, that was my Payback!" the Spiritomb cackled, taking great pleasure in getting to brag about his abilities. Maybe now this kid would show him a little bit more respect and fear befitting someone of his station. He was a Totem Pokemon, he was to be given a little more respect and circumstance than this kid had shown him so far. Clearly if his attack was being mistaken for a Dark Pulse, then he was showing off his real power. Tikikala was able to heal themself, summoning up some plant-based energy to heal their own wounds and restore some of their energy. Soon, it was as if nothing had been done to her at all. Spiritomb seethed, the spiritual fire around his body swirling into more of a vicious vortex. "Fighting dirty by healing, I see? Well I'll make an attack that you cannot heal from!"Spiritomb continued to mumble to himself, conceiving of new vicious plots and schemes that the Bayleef would not heal from anytime soon. The Pokemon looked like a veritable black hole of malice, preparing for a supercharged attack for the next turn unless Tiki and Alex did something quickly. "Movies? How do you know what a movie is, living in this cave? Or are you stuck in this cave?" Alex asked with a bit of snark in the air, unsure what the spectral Pokemon was going off about. "Also, for your information, I don't watch movies that much. Maybe TV shows, if you know what TV show is."
"Ahh... Payback. Some of these moves look similar." He shrugged, casually. "It's not dirty if the Pokemon can learn how to heal. I can say the same thing about you playing dirty with Nasty Plot, can I? Well, if it helps, I can switch to another Pokemon who don't know how to heal."
He wasn't sure if the Spiritomb could be persuaded, but he knew that whatever it was planning with those Nasty Plot, this ghostly Pokemon could hit very hard. He held out a Pokeball and returned the Bayleef. Then, he tossed out a Pokeball and revealed a Torkoal who was breathing smoke out of his nose. He wasn't sure if his Torkoal could handle whatever the Spiritomb would do, but he was willing to give this a try for now.
