Elena's teeth chattered as she made her way through the rough underbrush of the Johto wilderness. Her hair had sticks and leaves sticking out of it as her walk here had been a long and grueling one, and she looked worn from the journey. Never the less, even with her arms huddled into her shivering frame, she carried on like a champion, she had come this far and nothing could stop her now. The tall grass crunched underfoot, made crisp from the frost around her with each step, leaving her sneakers wet and slick.
"woah!" Elena exclaimed as she felt her leg slip on a patch of fallen leaves, and she failed to regain her balance, slamming face first into the hard frozen ground.
This wasn't how she expected being a pokemon trainer to be, though with her luck she should have known better than to expect things to be glamorous. The train ticket her family had bought her only brought the trainer-to-be part of the way to her destination. A cab was meant to take her the rest of the way, but by some ungodly force their engine overheated. Elena had opted to walk the rest of the way but she vastly overestimated just how far away New Bark was.
Picking herself up, Elena's growing despair was replaced with an unrivaled sense of joy. Peeking over the tall grass was the roofs of a small, homely village. Abandoning all precautions she rushed forward, only to slip and fall once more. It didn't matter though, and she was back on her feet at a blinding pace, rushing forward with elation.
Onlookers stared at the ragged looking girl they had never met who rushed through their town, clicking her heels and pumping her fist in glee as she skipped and danced through the town. They seemed less concerned when they saw her head to the research lab at the far end of town. It wasn't so odd for new trainers to have such bravado, though to be so old was strange still. Elena stopped to compose herself at the front door, brushing the grime from her dress and brush the leaves from her hair as best she could before she entered.
"Excuse me? I'm here to meet Professor Elm?" She asked meekly, suddenly losing her previous bravado as she entered the sterilized facility. An anxiousness swallowed her as she fully entered the building.

It was not the first time that the residents of New Bark Town saw strangers, it was rather common to see new faces heading for the lab, and soon they would be leaving with a pokemon at their side. What was different though, was how Elena looked while she practically danced around with joy, they were not used to see such different things mixed together. Usually very young kids who were getting their first pokemon, or merely a chance to visit the lab and Professor Elm where showing excitement as Elena did, or if someone were looking like they had trekked through Ilex for months, would look a lot more miserable. She was followed by a lot of amused and curious looks.
What might be missed my Elena, was that at the little square in front of the lab, a bit board was, a job board, with smaller tasks which trainers or others could pick up, if they wanted to help out and perhaps earn a little at the same time. It was probably more of use when she had picked a pokemon, but by then she could check it out if she wanted to.
The door to the lab was open and invited people to step right in, not that Elena got far before she ran into a woman in a labcoat, she stopped abruptly. "Oh dear! What have happened to you?!" She exclaimed and rushed to Elena to check her over, "are you alright? Hurt? Anyone after you?" She asked rapidly and glanced past the young woman and out the door to see if anyone dared to follow her in. There wasn't. When Elena had assured she was alright and not chased by something dangerous, the researcher would calm down. "My apologies, I get quite protective," she laughed and ran a hand through her messy hair, before she gestured for Elena to come along. "What brings you here, and what is your name?" She would ask, and exclaim the moment she got the name, "oh! We have been waiting for you! Why are you running late?"
With a smile she lead Elena into a room where a man with short, messy brown hair and a lab coat which pockets were filled to the bring with notes, where pacing back and forth. "Professor, you don't have to worry, Elena is here and is relatively alright, nothing bad has happened to here," the female researcher said warmly and Professor Elm looked up relieved. "Elena! I'm glad you have finally arrived, I have heard worrisome rumors lately and worried something had happened!" He said as he walked over and grabbed her hand to shake it. He looked like he would like to say more but the female researcher had went over to another door and opened it, and in came three pokemon running eagerly. "Oh right, there are someone else who has been waiting eagerly for your arrival," Elm said with a smile as he turned to the three pokemon, who lined up, looking curiously at Elena. Or at least two of them did. "Let me introduce Bulbasaur, Squirtle and Charmander. A grass type, a water type and a fire type. You can pick one as your first pokemon to start your journey with," Elm said and gestured for Elena to step forward and check out the three options.
(ooc: the job board is a hint to [url=https://zapdoszulu.proboards.com/page/job-board[/url], which are completely optional and mostly just a help to make a story if needed. You can start one yourself or simply ask a mod to throw some options at you ^^ )

Elena was initially worried by the worrisome rumors the professor had eluded to but her concerns quickly dissipated when Professor Elm brought up why she had come here. She was amazed by how well-trained these three seemed to be as despite their eagerness the three Pokemon lined up dutifully and stood at attention for Elena. Elena could hardly contain her excitement, she had dreamed of his day and it was finally here. She stared at the Pokemon with watery eyes, trying her best not to cry. At long last she would have her first Pokemon. The professor had told her to pick, and she felt a bit off about the concept. She wanted this onPokem to be a life companion, should they not have a say in this too? She decided then and there that she would just have to make sure she picked the right one.
Staring at the trio with utmost scrutiny she tried to gauge what she could about their personalities. The Squirtle was the first one she looked at, she stood like a proper soldier: proper posture, a fierce but stoic glare plastered on its adorable face, and hands tightly pressed against its side. It seemed far too intense for Elena, how could she ever keep from pinching his chubby cheeks or giggling at his attempts at shrugging off 'boo-boos'.
The Charmander beside it seemed to fidget and squirm, struggling to keep itself contained in one place. Its eyes darted about, not in fear but in wonder, a nefarious wonder she realized as she saw the mischievous gleam in its eye when its eyes landed on a set of beakers on a table. With how the assistant glowered at this little dragon, Elena could tell this was not the first time he had pondered causing chaos. Certainly not the kind of Pokemon she would like for her first, especially once it learns to blast fire from its mouth.
Finally, Elena's eyes met the Bulbasaurs. At first, she thought it was stoic like the Squirtle until she realized that the whole time it hadn't blinked. Its eyes stayed fixed on a fly buzzing in the room, watching it like it was a miracle in the making. Elena stifled a giggle that finally caught the Bulbasaur's attention. The two of them stared at each other for a moment, before finally the bulbasuar blinked, one eye then the other. Elena had certainly seen enough. She offered a hand out to the Bulbasaur and he slowly leaned forward to sniff it and examine the girl in front of her. When she smiled, so did it, letting out a pleasant chirp. "Saur!"
"I think I found the one. Do you mind if I put him in my own Pokeball?" She asked, reaching into her bag and pulling the pokeball her family had bought her.

Professor Elm clapped his hands together, delighted that Elena and Bulbasaur seemed to pick each other. In truth, that particular Bulbasaur remained in his lab a bit longer than he liked, as most of the other fresh travelers who came looking for their first starters to begin their arduous quest with looked over it in favor of the overly popular flame-tailed lizard. “I am so happy you and Bulbasaur both seem to want to join each other!” He hummed a bit, a small frown on his lips. “Usually, the Pokemon are stuck in their original balls. But let me see real quick…” Since Elena’s Poke Ball looked so similar to the Poke Ball Bulbasaur was already in, Elm’s very limited skill on such a difficult task was actually useful. He easily switched them out so that Elena would have by all accounts and means, a Poke Ball who’s meaning to her delved deeper than that as it remained something given to her by her family, attached to her starter. "There you go...all switched over!" Elm smiled, delighted. “If you ever want something more Kurt’s granddaughter, Maizie knows how to switch their original balls much better than I do. She’s in Azalea Town, which will be along the way.” Elm offered he smiled. As he would turn to bid her farewell on the beginning of her journey, a wild bear would appear at his door with its paws held out expectantly. Well… come on, Mr. Professor Elm. Why do all the other kids get their own starters but not me?! “I wanna be a Pokemon trainer too!” The Spinda roared angrily, stomping its feet on the ground and slashing its claws in the air. Oh dear... I guess no one sat down and told this Spinda it's a Pokemon and not a people, huh? What on earth will Elena do now? A Wild Spinda is really angry! Level 4. Elena was ready to quickly disregard his request to change Pokeballs when she learned just how tedious it was, but the professor and his aides were nothing if not kind and helpful. It caused her to feel knots in her stomach as she watched the professor silently while he worked but eventually, the Pokeballs where switched and her brand new Bulbasaur was placed withing the orb her family had given her. She clutched it close to her heart and basked in the moment then and there.
"thank you so much professor, If I can ever pay you back, let me know" She said before looking to the pokeball and realizing she was speaking for more than one person now, even if one was a very aloof pokemon. "Let us know" She corrected.
The professor made sure she knew about someone who could switch pokeballs later, something to keep in mind for later. For now though, Elena was eager to get to the road and prepare for her journey once and for all! Pleasantries where exchanged and Elena had only just turned away from him to exit the research facility when he was met with a surprise. A pokemon! Already, she was face to face with a potential new member to her party! There was a flurry of emotions when she saw it: she was afraid, both of losing and of the familiar sting of pokemon hitting her., but also a thrill, a rush of adrenaline for her first real battle! Her emotions dulled, however, as she noticed the pokemon did not seem to be very eager to fight. In fact, it was holding it's hand out, expecting something, though whatever it was she did not know.
"Spin! Spinda!" The Pokemon protested.
Elena was unaware of the pokemon's ambitions, but she couldn't help but giggle at it's growing frustration. It was throwing a tantrum like a toddler! Her chiding stopped when she saw it baring claws now, and she quickly remembered it was a wild animal! She decided to take this growing frustration as a challenge, and so she pressed the button on her newly filled pokeball forth. A bright light shone as the bulbasuar emerged, letting out a 'roar'. "Bulbasuar!"
Elena matched the energy growing in the room, the tension of a battle beginning!
"alright buddy, show'em what you got!" She declared, pointing dramatically at the Spinda like she had seen all the trainers on television do. The bulbasaur didn't react at all, just standing there idly and staring at the spinda with it's vacant stare. "P-please?" She asked, a bit less eagerly this time.
As if snapped out of some strange stupor the bulbasaur suddenly shot up and lunged forward, headlong into a tackle!

Spinda stared at Elena and Butters for a second. Who were they and why were they in its way? In its rage, it reached out its long claws to try and shove the girl out of the way, in an effort to teach her not to stand in someone else’s way. “You’re being rude. Don’t you know this? Other trainers want to begin their Pokémon journey, too! Like me!” Spinda insisted, its temperament slowly reaching a boiling point. “Careful with that Spinda, miss!” Professor Elm called from behind her. “Usually, I would have recommended starting your first battle off with a Pidgey or Caterpie but…I’m thankful you’re keeping us in the lab safe!”Buttercup finally found her momentum, it would seem, and not a second too late. As soon as the small quadruped frog leaped off the ground, stubby legs carrying her careening into Spinda, she would knock the spot bear off course. Spinda screamed in pain, flopping over onto the frost covered ground. Even her Bulbasaur was rude! Was everyone in New Bark Town this rude?! It was a wonder anyone even wanted to come to Professor Elm’s lab in the first place! “You’re being mean right now. Who taught you manners, huh?!” Spinda snapped, grabbing Bulbasaur’s back legs before she could escape. Spinda would pull Butters down to the ground with her and ram its large head against her side. There! Maybe now, the two would learn a lesson in being nice and respectful of the next trainer waiting in line. Sure, Spinda wasn’t your typical trainer. It had claws and fur and didn’t dress in those silly things people called ‘clothes’. But did that mean it didn’t deserve to be a trainer itself? It could command a whole army of Pokémon to use their best moves, if someone would just give Spinda a fighting chance! “Stay down while I get up and I won’t have to keep being so ugly. I don’t like it, you know.” Spinda huffed in annoyance. Wild Encounter Weather: Frost [Clear] [attr="class","qkt-bkgd"] [attr="class","qkt-wild-pkmn"] Spinda LV 4 HP 80% [16/20]

Elena was simultaneously encouraged and scared by Elm's works. It was nice to hear someone appreciate her attempt to fight off this pokemon, though he made it seem far more dangerous than she would have hoped. Luckily, it looked like her initial strike had paid off. Butters was slow to listen to her but he packed a wallop as he brought the off-balanced enemy to the ground.
"That'a boy!" She cheered as she felt pride swelling for her victory over her first enemy.
her elation died with the Spinda's rebuttle. It gnashed it's teeth as it roared out it's name in growing frustration and slammed her pokemon to the ground, returning it's tackle in kind. Elena seemed worried suddenly, even with the potions in her bag and the homefeild advantage, what if this pokemon proved to be too much? THinking fast she shouted out.
"uh, uh, use your vines!" She cried out, pointing dramatically but with a much less defiant glare.
This time, the Bulbasuar was far quicker to connect the dots but still took painfully long. The Spinda returned to it's feet while Butters stayed on the ground, unmoving like a stone. As soon as the Spinda had regained it's footing, two sets of vines sprung for and moved to wrap around it's legs, ready to flop the enemy back onto the ground.

Those vines ensnared the spinda and the little bear growled, flailing its arms in protest, wanting nothing more than to kick and bite in pure frustration. Honestly, it was moments like these that reminded it how humans looked down upon them. How they didn't believe that pokemon could be trainers too. Just because they didn't use those fancy catching things or wear clothes and they had fur and— <LET ME GO! I am going to become a 'pokemon master' one day and cannot have pokemon like you stopping me! You should be working with me and not the humans.> It complained grumpily, twisting free and landing harshly onto Butters. They bounced apart from the force of the impact. It pushed to its feet and wobbled, regaining its 'balance' quickly. "I believe you 'have it on the ropes' as the kids say," Elm said with a chuckle. Elena was shocked by her pokemon's strength , easily holding the Spinda in place and squeezing its limbs like a hungry Ekans. This gave her plentiful time to pull a pokeball from her bag before the Spinda finally freed itself. She also felt some guilt for the battle. This Pokemon didn't seem like it wanted a fight, and the way it stretched its arms out initially as if asking for something. Even now it was shouting to the Bulbasaur as if trying to reason with it.
As the Spinda rose to its feet Butters was already standing stock still like he was before, though a bit worse for wear. Elm gave her the encouragement she needed, further cementing to her that it was time to catch this Pokemon! She tossed the ball cautiously, not wanting to beam the Spinda in the head, letting the ball gently roll beside it before it opened to engulf the Pokemon. Elena watched with baited breath, fingers crossed and biting her lip in anticipation.

The ball flew through the air and pinged off the upset spinda's head. There was a ping and a flash and the ball opened up in a flash of red light that swallowed the spinda whole. The little capsule fell to the ground and began to furiously shake as the pokemon within fought the very idea of this battle ending now! But after a few rocks, the ball fell still and quiet. Caught. Elm clapped softly, "You have done it. It seems as if you have the basics under your belt. You and Butters are quite the team and I am eager to see you two grow together." He picked up the ball on the floor and offered it to her. "And I am also curious to see how your journey unfolds. May you find many worthwhile companions on your way." He would place it in her palm. "Go on. Just make sure to check in now and then."

They reacted happily as Elena pulled them into a hug and twirled. "We did it!" She cheered with a giddy chuckle. Setting her precious pokemon on the ground, he seemed insistant that she keep him in her arms, tugging on her dress with a claw gently. Elena placed the newest pokeball of hers into her bag before returning her attention to the professor. She couldn't help but blush at his praise. "Thank you sir, er, professor. I'll do my best!" She replied before turning to the door. He was right, it was time to get her journey started!

"Good luck! Myself and my team will be here if you have any questions or grand news to report. And remember, trainer, have fun out there!" Elena stepped outside with Elm's voice chasing her, ready to face the day, breath clouding around her mouth as the heat from her lungs met the frosty air. She would take a step forth, and would instantly feel a solid impact onto the top of her head. A bit of snow falling off the eaves of the lab? An exploratory touch would reveal NOT SO. That was a very solid, wiggly, WORMY shape that scree'd and clung to her head in alarm. It would be easy to shake off, it was just a wurmple after all. Elena waved the professor off as she opened the door, smiling brightly for the first time in a while. Everything seemed to be on the up and up! As she stepped outside the air struck her like a dagger but she refused to be phased, merely taking the cold in stride! Then everything went dark. She nearly toppled from the weight, stumbling about as she grabbed at her face. She nearly screamed when she felt the bumpy, skin-like texture and the various sharp feet wriggling on her. Luckily, she tossed the Pokemon to the side, shuddering from the sensation moments before.
When she saw the wurmple, she had to do a double take. Two Pokemon in such quick succession! She was as shocked by this as the wurmple was. She quickly rushed for one of her Pokemon, tossing a Pokeball out recklessly. "Go bulbasuar!" She eagerly shouted.
The pokeball opened and an up-right silhouette appeared, slowly congealing into the form of the Spinda she had just caught. The Spinda seemed confused, before turning its angry gaze at its trainer. Elena, anxiously, pointed to the wurmple. "H-hey, wait! Let's worry about the wurmple first!"
Ditz nearly toppled over as it spun around to see the shaken bug in its path. The Spinda smiled with glee. Perfect! A Pokemon of my own! it thought as it rushed forward, charging the other Pokemon with a tackle!
"Hey! You're my Pokemon now, got it?" The Spinda roared. Though to its trainer, all they would hear is "spin! Spinda!"

Wurmple tumbled through the air as Elena tossed it off of her. “Ahk! Help! I’m falling and I can’t get up!” The small fuchsia-hued Pokemon screamed. It’s many tiny arms kicked and flailed through the air in vain. It was trying to grasp at anything – hair, a stray vine, a random branch – but nothing was close enough to help stop its fall. “Oof! What was that for?!” Wurmple cried painfully as it landed on its side. It rocked and rolled until it managed to righted itself once more. Quickly, Wurmple lifted itself up as tall as it could on its back legs and searched around for a moment. “Oh… did I startle your human or something?” It asked Spinda curiously. “I’m not…really looking for a trainer. You see… I gotta evolve first.” It hummed. Then that big bear clobbered it with her body! Oww! That definitely didn’t feel very nice! “Hey, cut that out, will ya?!” Wurmple snapped, rearing back and slamming its head into Ditz’ shoulder. “I said I needed to evolve first. You’re going to leave a bruise if you do that. I don’t want your trainer to capture me just yet.” It insisted firmly. The wurmple retorted to the attack with a tackle of it's own, and the impact left the dizzy panda pokemon spinning away before it caught itself, only to lose it's balance again. Ditz managed to plant it's feet long enough to point at it's foe and bark back a reply. "Don't worry, I'll evolve you when I catch you!" The spinda replied hastily before turning back to it's trainer. "Hey! Throw the ball already"
Elena seemed to have the same though, as she was rummaging through her bag with reckless abandon before pulling out a pokeball just in time to see the Spinda looking at her and shouting. Spinda Spin spinDA! Elena looked at the pokemon in confusion, but realized she had bigger bugs to fry. She tossed her pokeball at the bug. Her fingers crossed as she hoped it would stay put!
