Bugsy’s reaction to Leonardo wasn’t much of an indication on how the battle would fare out. He didn’t seemed all that surprised to see a high-levelled Pokémon but of course, this was probably because he’d seen many in the time he’d been a Gym Leader. “A Wartortle, huh? This should be interesting. Don’t expect this match to be easy...in fact, this should be a lot harder than most of your other battles.” Bugsy laughed to himself. “Kakuna, let’s go! Use your Harden!”
Leonardo’s superior speed really paid off. The water-type turtle swiftly moved over to his opponent’s side of the field, ready to pounce. As Kakuna attempted to ready itself for a Harden attack, Leonardo jumped at it, causing it to lose focus. The Wartortle revealed his strong teeth and chomped down heavily on the bug-type’s body. Although Kakuna’s defences were quite impressive, it was going to have a difficult time standing up to such Leonardo.
As the water-type retreated to his side of the field, Bugsy realised that Leonardo’s bite attack had caused Kakuna to flinch. “Oh no! Kakuna, don’t let me down!” the boy gasped, clearly becoming a little more stressed. Nadia’s strategies had worked well so far and if he lost, he wouldn’t have to feel humiliated. However, it was a Gym Leader’s duty to put up the best fight they could and the bug-type trainer had all intentions of doing so.

Harder... Harden... very, very funny. Well, so long as he was enjoying himself, that made the battle a little easier to take on. Of course, a lot of intimidation was removed with the defeat of that Scyther as well. On her journey, Nadia had yet to see a more powerful beast than that thing, both in strength and size. Fast and nimble it was, but Riolu's stubbornness paid off. Now all that should be left is Leonardo taking on this Kakuna and victory should be theirs! This is a 3-on-3 battle, right?
"You're only getting better, buddy!" Nadia complimented to her Wartortle. He was looking fiercely proud right now, just like he always has since his evolution. He may be naive, but damn was he a strong fighter despite all odds! "But don't get ahead of yourself; The fight isn't over until it is over! Right where you bit into Kakuna, I want you to fire a strong blast of Water Gun! Do it while you ave created a gap in its defenses!"
Crack the shell with Bite and then use Water Gun to seep through the cracks and help strike it from within... that was the game plan. And since Kakuna flinched, it wasn't able to mend itself with Harden either, so this worked to her advantage. If Kakuna's weak point was exposed with this tactic, maybe the battle could end here... only one way to find out.

After seeing what Leonardo was capable of, Bugsy knew it was only at matter of time until his Kakuna was defeated. His plan to use Harden hadn’t worked the way he’d hoped so there was nothing left to do but go all out and try an offensive attack. “Kakuna, I need you to try a Poison Sting!” the Gym Leader commanded, biting his lip gently.
Leonardo hastily fired a powerful jet of water at the cacoon, aiming to carry out Nadia’s strategy properly. The water successfully struck Kakuna, forcing the bug-type to skid across the battle arena. Water Gun worked particularly well and took a massive chunk of health from Bugsy’s Pokémon. Despite its defensive build, Kakuna was finding it difficult to stand up to Leonardo. “So, you have a strategy! Impressive, but don’t think we’re giving up just yet!” Bugsy proclaimed, turning to his Pokémon.
As Bugsy nodded, Kakuna fired multiple poison needles at its foe. The pins beat against Leonardo’s shell but his special defense was enough to render the attack useless. Her Pokémon only slightly effected, this battle was looking well for Nadia. Kakuna looked both tired and bruised already. Bugsy knew the battle was nearing a close but now he’d just have to wait it out.

This was it! The final strike of the battle before victory was theirs! Even with Kakuna's Poison Sting attack, it did little against Leonardo's tough plated shell. As the the little bards finished bombarding him, the turtle only scratched his chest a little it, brushing away what little that just continued to sit there. Any evidence of being poisoned? Absolutely none since a scratch wasn't even made in the built-in armor set.
"We have them on the ropes!" Nadia was now getting very enthusiastic over how the battle was wrapping up. Hey, who wouldn't be thrilled at a new badge except for the overly cocky? "I want you to use Water Gun again, Leonardo! Strike through the defense again just like before and you'll have yourself victory!"
This looked like it was it... after this, the Hive Badge will be hers at long last and she'll be one step closer to catching up to everybody else who had left her behind years before. Nadia was more than determined to catch up and even surpass all those other people, her friends and older brother as well. Her team was now some of her closest friends and together they would overcome all the odds. No doubt now that she was going to lose!

With a powerful spray of water, the shelled cocoon Pokemon was lifted into the air! If the spray of water didn't take down the Pokemon, then the thud back down would certainly do the trick. Though it looked the same as before, Kakuna not exactly having the most vibrant facial expression around, just the fact it was laying on the ground and not getting back up was enough to say that it was down for the count. When the judge rose his hand to Nadia's side and declared her to be the winner, Leonardo ran straight for his trainer and jumped right into her arms. Oof... he was getting big, alright!
"That battle was fantastic," Nadia approached Bugsy, holding Leonardo in one arm and reaching out for a handshake with the other. "Especially against Scyther. I wasn't sure if I could pull it off for a moment there, I've never fought a more powerful Pokemon than that!" Giant mutational jellyfish excluded that is.
Putting back down her Pokemon, she happily accepted her spoils from the battle, especially the gym badge which she pinned right back on her bag strap, right bellow the Zephyr Badge. Now with two badges, she felt more like an accomplished trainer. In addition to that, she did it this time without a Pokemon fainting! The last gym match, she had a few Pokemon faint. This time it was even harder, but she overcame that obstacle and pulled out an amazing victory. She was really proud for the effort her entire team put in and they deserve a well earned rest.
"Thanks for accepting my challenge, Bugsy." She made sure to give him a little bit of a curtsy out of some old habits. "I'll be sure I take good care of the badge. Maybe, someday if I come through the area again, I'll stop by for a visit. I know you get many challengers now and then, but I hope you'll remember me." Getting out Leonardo's Pokeball, she withdrew him back in and then reached for her rain coat, draping it over herself. "Now, I've got to get back to the Pokemon Center; Riolu is going to need some treatment quick. But thank you again, Bugsy! See you again!"
Putting the Pokeball back in the bag pocket, she makes a jog for the exit, but not too quickly to seem completely impatient or impolite. She made sure she was still smiling the whole way out, though inside her head she wondered how her Pokemon were doing. Strawberry and Leonardo were fine, but Riolu got beat to hell and back, though he still won. Regardless of his cocky attitude, he's still mortal and she still loves and worries for him, so the sooner he can be bandaged up, the better. Upon making it outside, into the torrential downpour outside, she went from her easy little jog to a complete sprint for the Pokemon Center. No time to waste: Medical treatment comes first. Once in the hands of Nurse Joy, perhaps she'd phone home with the news...
