Name: Roland Redfield
Age: 28
Gender: Male
Trainer Type: Pokemon trainer
Hometown: Olivine City, Johto region
Appearance:
Roland wears a ACU(Army Combat Uniform) from his time in the US Army with the velcro for the shoulder pockets and name tapes covered by fabric with the UCP(Universal Camouflage Pattern) camouflage on the rest of the uniform. While he has a boonie cap with him he usually wears the patrol cap except when it is raining or snowing. Due to it being his old military uniform it is water and fire resistant and helps to shield him from some environments. He has a tactical assault panel as well that, while un-armored, holds his weapon's magazines, his pouches, and medical equipment while most of his other supplies are in a MOLLE rucksack that he carries on his back apart from his knife which he has on his right leg. Along with this he wears shooting gloves he got while in the Army which are foliage green like the green in his ACU and some steal toed combat boots. Under his jacket he has a foliage green cotton short sleeved shirt. To hold the pokeballs for his party pokemon he has a foliage green belt.
While in the Army he had to stay in shape and due to being in the Army for several years he continues to do PT and practice the martial arts he was taught in the Army in order to remain fit for re-enlistment should he be called to duty or choose to re-enlist, as a result he is thin but muscular. He also has several scars on his arms, torso, and back from shrapnel and bullet wounds he received while fighting as an infantryman during COIN (COunter INsurgency) operations. His left ear has a hearing aid due to it having hearing damage from when a grenade went off in a room he was clearing with his battle buddy. Roland has black hair in a buzz cut along with brown eyes. He is caucasian with a very slight tan he is 6'1" tall and he weighs 175lbs.
Personality:
Due to his time in the Army he is very proud of the US military and its structure and doesn't like the, relative, disorder he sees in civilian life even though it does work for most of them. He can be very sarcastic at times and can seem cold to people but usually he is rather helpful and he enjoys helping other people, as long as they are willing to work towards their goals. He hates dealing with people that feel they should be given everything simply due to rank, name, or status as he feels anything someone wants they must strive to achieve on their own before having others help them. Because he was involved with COIN operations he is able to read people, for the most part, rather well and is able to understand what they need so that he can better help them. He also likes being and working as part of a team.
Because of his training and conditioning he believes in personal and unit honor and feels that people should act honorable and with integrity, by military standards not civilian, but he hates the naive people that believe in purposely getting into fair fights or that think you shouldn't use any advantages against an enemy. He feels that if you need to fight then you need to take every advantage you have to the fight to best protect your unit, complete your objective, stop their objective, and kill them before they kill you. Due to this he is more than willing to use any advantage to keep his team safe and to complete the objective so if his enemy has a hand to hand focus he will shoot them, and so on, to make sure that their threat level is below what he sends at them. Because of this it seems like all he cares about is winning but what he wants is simply to complete the objective and keep his team alive both of which usually help towards winning the fight. He is kind of blunt when correcting someone that makes a mistake but he will try and either help them or make them want to prove that they can do it again only better.
His strengths include being able to work well in a team and take charge if needed, being willing to overpower enemy attacks through superior force to protect his team and complete the objective, a tactical mind set, and being straight forward when dealing with someone's mistakes but not threatening, overbearing, or hurtful to them for it and will help them, if needed to improve in that area.
His weaknesses include adjusting to civilian life, always using force to destroy an opponent and their ability to fight back, has trouble accepting civilians' physical limits, and getting out of his infantry mindset.
History:
Roland was born in Olivine City in the Johto region to SSG(Staff Sergeant) Alan Redfield SFC(Seaman First Class) Jenny Redfield at a US Naval base and to better take care of him his mother retired from the USN(US Navy), when he was three his father was killed in action during a peacekeeping mission. To be closer to family for support his mother moved back to the United States and brought him with her and lived in New York city. As he was growing up she would tell him about his father and what he used to do which caused Roland to want to enlist in the US Army in honor of his father because he felt he would enjoy military life, while his mother was against his career choice, as he hoped to join the infantry like his father, she did her best to support him and made him work hard towards enlisting. To monitor what he was taught and did, she home-schooled him and had him on a schedule like that used during basic training in the Army, which he thought was too much and was preventing him from spending time with his friends, she would would also take him to shooting ranges so that he could practice and have some experience with firearms before he enlisted. When he turned 17 his mother gave her consent to let him enlist at the age of 17 instead of waiting until he turned 18 and so he was sent to Fort Benning, Georgia and went through the 17 week long 11B(Infantryman) OSUT(One Station Unit Training). During the training he realized how much his mother had helped him when she was raising him as he was one of the few that was able to adjust to the environment quickly. When he graduated he was glad that his mother was there to see him get his blue cord. After graduating and being placed in a unit he had very little free time but when he did have some time available he would always go to help his mother to repay her for helping him prepare.
After being an infantryman for three years a COIN operation was started with his unit being the first non-SOF(Special Operations Force) sent into the area. Due to this they had to deal with very heavy fighting and while pushing back the enemy forces in their area they had a, relatively, high casualty rate. Even so the unit served with distinction and completed most of their objectives while capturing enemy territory. On his second deployment Roland was caught in an ambush with his squad and he was shot multiple times by an enemy fighter. His vest stopped most of the rounds but two others got through and penetrated through his torso and into the back of his vest these two added with a hit to his right arm incapacitated him taking him out of the fight. Fortunately for him and his squad they got reinforced and all of the wounded were able to get life saving treatment apart from the squad leader who had been making sure everyone had ammo and pulling the wounded back to a safer area behind some cover who was killed after a bullet went through his left leg and cut the femoral artery. After this Roland and his squad were medevaced out of the area and taken back to a a base to get surgery for their wounds. Due to the wounds most members of the squad received the entire squad was sent back to the US to get them out of the combat zone and so they could be present for their squad leader's funeral.
Over the course of the next eight years Roland was placed in charge of a squad and deployed during other COIN operations, during which he got wounded again but this time he was caught in a grenade explosion that damaged his left ear and sent several small pieces of shrapnel into his body. These wounds didn't take him out of the fight however and he was able to complete his squad's objective after getting some basic medical treatment. As they were boarding a helicopter however he got shot twice by a sniper in the back. The first bullet was stopped by his already tattered and heavily damaged vest while the second one went through the vest and deflated one of his lungs. While his lung was able to get back to 62% effectiveness his ear is permanently damaged and he must have a hearing aid in order to hear from his left ear, due to this he saw himself as a liability for his squad and unit causing him to retire from the Army with the hope of re-enlisting should he be able to get better functionality from his lung and be able to improve the hearing in his left ear.
After retiring he moved to Olivine city, as his mother had moved back there while he was on one of his deployments, and while she was glad that he was alive he began to get depressed due to the fact that he felt it was meaningless for him to be alive as he had nothing else apart from the Army and so, while it took her a month, she was able to talk him into getting some therapy. The therapy was designed for police and military personnel who were injured or otherwise unable to continue in their duties due to physical or mental trauma and would pair them up with a pokemon so that they be able to support and raise a pokemon to help them feel a sense of purpose and so they would have a partner that would always be with them. It was beneficial for Roland as it was like being part of a team again and he was able to help and support the pokemon while it helped and supported him. After a few weeks with the pokemon he decided to go on a journey with it in order to explore the world and do more than just sit around at his house trying to adjust to being a civilian. To help defend himself and his pokemon from more dangerous threats he has a M4A1 carbine, extra ammunition, and a combat knife.
Goals:
His main goal is to re-enlist in the Army but at the moment he is simply working on traveling with his pokemon and having a team of pokemon in place of his squad while keeping a sense of purpose by helping and raising them like he would his soldiers.
