Ahaha, I don't have a consistent naming scheme. Mostly it's just whatever sounds good.
Every time I get a Charmander, I name it Zippo. ;D Beacuse Ritchie was awesome.
My Pidgey is named Athena because I developed her as a calm creature that analyzes the situation before charging in.
My Poochyena is named Fang because... I couldn't think of anything better. XD
I named my Magikarp Nero because I liked the way the name sounded. Nero was actually the name of a Roman Emperor that some say burned down most of Rome. Which sounds like a weird name for a floppy little Magikarp, but eh. It works. ;D
My Torchic is named Amaterasu because I love that name. It's the name for the sun goddess in Japanese culture.
And my Elekid is named Bolt because, like with Fang, I couldn't think of a better name. XD
But yeah. If I even get around to nicknaming my Pokemon, it's usually random. Sometimes I use historical names, someyimes the names have some meaning that relates to the Pokemon, but mostly I pick names based on what sounds good. XD

So you got a couple of goddesses (Greek and Japanese) and an emperor. I see a trend. ;3 I thought it was genius naming your Torchic Amaterasu. ^^

Most of my pokemon naming involves combining two word part or words and make it a name... I know that is strange...

I've had a lot of my Pokémon since Pokémon Yellow, so that's why they might have goofy nicknames. x3
-- Glint/Squirtle - I guess it's just to do with his mischievous personality. He was one of my first ever Pokémon so I'm not really sure it had much meaning.
-- Ruffle/Pikachu - Her name could be associated with her tendency to start fights and be rough in general. Again, she's been there since Yellow (which is why she hasn't evolved). Thank you Pokémon Silver for confirming her gender. xD
-- Rusty/Pidgeotto - This one was caught by my sister. I was trading her Pokémon to start off her game in FR/LG, and she caught a load of Pidgey. We always used to mess about and give the Pokémon weird names. I don't know why, but I randomly decided to train Rusty, and then she really grew on me.
-- Alena/Ekans - I got her name from 20000-names.com when I was playing Pokémon Silver. There's no real meaning behind it.
-- Kiet/Ponyta - Same as above. I just liked the name.
-- Sanga/Charmander - I got his name from both a Yu-Gi-Oh card that my cousins used to have, and a movie called Two Brothers that I watched when I was younger. I really liked the name and decided to give it to my Charmander, after I realised how overused Blaze was.

Well well. There seems to be some unique and interesting names from some people. I really like all of them so far. As for mine though. Here we go:
Blaze the Charmander - Un-creative I know, but it's something plain and simple for Zephyr's partner.
Striker the Gligar - Thought of the name while watching the anime and seeing it attack with it's tail and I knew it was a perfect fit for my Gligar on here.
Nox the Aipom/Psycho the Ralts/Rapante the Horsea - Other people's pokes traded to me, so I'm not sure about their nicknames and why they named them that way. I really like the names though!
Kipz the Mudkip - Not the most creative, but I felt it was suiting.

Berry: This was actually the name of my old Charmander, one I got back on Pokemon Red version, but I decided to transfer it to Berry on here. The only difference was that the Berry on my game was fully evolved.
Scatter: I actually used to have a fish named Scatter. Me and my brother loved that fish, and he was our second ever pet, after Ricky the Goldfish. So, that's where that came from~
Hiroki: Andrew named him, so I don't know c:
Spirit: Named after the wild Mustang from the movie Spirit. he carries a similar attitude towards Sandy as the horse did to the human as well, just...worse.
Munchy: I actually gave him the nickname one of my friends had back in elementary school, and I just thought it'd be fun. but the Munchy I knew, was a girl.
Muru: This is another one I got from a movie, which was Balto 2. I always loved how Muru the mouse was, and I thought the name was adorable. But, same as munch above, this Muru was a boy, not a girl.

I never really nicknamed my Pokemon before coming to this site as I thought it was a bit meh but I've started naming things alot now. I usually sit around and think up a personality first then allow Google to do the hard work for me by typing in the meanings of a certain key word or something LOL.
Cheshire my Meowth, for example, I would've been more than happy to just settle with something like Midge (it was an old cat of my grandma's~) but for whatever reason I was reminded back to Alice in Wonderland, asked Joe to slap a cocky grin on it's sprite and then named it Cheshire.
Otherwise it's just video game/anime names which I found cool but doesn't necessarily fit. Greil, Yune, Lute (Fire Emblem), Fujiko/Jigen (Lupin 3rd), Tenebrae (Tales of Symphonia 2), Kirin (Monster Hunter), Chaurus (Skyrim) LOL.

Out of curiosity I decided to make a quick list of all the starter names so far. See which ones are the most popular. =) I'm most likely the only one interested...What can I say, I gather and organize data like a boss.

Wow, Lex! Nice job, that looks like it took ages! It's really interesting to see all of those names. I love having a unique name for my mine. :3 You only forgot my Charmander, Blaze Sanga. D: He's in Andrew's box, simply because I have a different team planned for Terri and he fits into Andrew's history nicely.

Haha looks like ages, yeah, but it took a little over an hour. I didn't account for name changes, I just went off the original post in the 'Claim [Pokemon Starter]' threads. To be fair, half those Blazes came from people who never actually made a character. I'll take one of them off and add a Sanga instead. :3

Woot! I'm the only one with a Charmander named Zippo! Makes me feel *somewhat* original. ;D Oh, and to add to the list of gods, goddesses, emperors and lighters on my team, I jusr got a Horsea which I promptly named Scylla, after the Greek sea monster. If I get my hands on another one, its name will be Charybdis. Because I can. ;D I love me my mythology.

Mythological gods/goddesses (and Shakespearean characters) have some of the coolest names I think. Props on Scylla, that's gold.
@tiki: I think that's a cool method to picking names. After all, quite a few Pokemon species are named that way. Sentry + Ferret = Sentret
Andrew: Ruffle has got to be one of the cutest names for a female Pikachu. x3
paws: Makes sense. :3
@hunter: I think Blaze was so popular because Charmander's ability is blaze. The names you picked definitely fit the Pokemon. =)
@kat: I thought Spirit was perfect for Ponyta, little jealous I didn't think of it first. ;)
@morri: lol I do that with nameberry! And sometimes the thesaurus on dictionary.com. Love using names that reveal a bit of the personality.
kinderegg: Technosaurus is pretty cool. I have to admit. ^^ Can't wait to see what other names you come up with. =)
