Lex, no duh, lol. I read half of every pokemon's etymology trivia section in bulbapedia. although my nicknaming may also involves onomatopoeia or greek or latin root word.. or just random letters shuffling and rearranging...

Nick name up date: Jet- been explained Grace- I think of hopips as graceful Pokemon so I named her after her personality Flash- the first horse I rode was called flash so I made a reference to flash though that horse is sadly up in a better place now,and after seeing how Morri caught her during a thunderstorm it made more sence (I named her flash before I noticed) Jo-Jo- I gotten him from Joey and after the hard work he done for me I named the Chingling after his mod name plus it's a cute name and I plan to keep Jo-Jo a Chingling Natalia- I named after a roleplaying friend in chile who's favourite Pokemon is a fire type plus chile gets forest fires though my friend doesn't cause them Radar- I was looking at names on google and I fell in love with the name since rattatas use their ears like radars

Haha looks like ages, yeah, but it took a little over an hour. I didn't account for name changes, I just went off the original post in the 'Claim [Pokemon Starter]' threads. To be fair, half those Blazes came from people who never actually made a character. I'll take one of them off and add a Sanga instead. :3 Haha, I can't believe I never thought of that! That seems like a much more convenient way. xD Blaze was originally one of the names in my Yellow Version (before the ability ;D) but when I saw so many people were using it, I decided to change it. x3 I'm pretty sure Joey, Morri and Alex all got changes too. It's pretty cool to see how many of each there are! Andrew: Ruffle has got to be one of the cutest names for a female Pikachu. x3 Thanks, haha! Her name, personality and nostalgia are the only reasons I've kept her in my party all these years! My team is quite stereotypical (two starters, a Pikachu and a Pidgeotto/Pidgeot) but they've all grown on me so much. That's why I really need to make them stand out more in terms of names and personalities. xD

In all honesty, i'm a bit like Morri. I never nicknamed Pokemon up until joining here (And it was only after a couple of months of my stay here that I warmed up to the idea). Prior to that, I found it kinda stupid but now i'm a firm follower of nicknaming. Gives it a real personal edge. Here's some of mine: Hoodlum the Scraggy - Pretty straightforward one, he's a ghetto thug so that fits right? Chugga the Koffing - I had been thinking Smog but without sounding too much like the Koffing version of Blaze/Charmander I tried thinking differently. Then the idea of a train chugging along with smoke pouring out of it pleased me nicely. Voltek the Elekid - Nothing special. Volt on its own was too unoriginal but the ek on the end just gives it a sort of uniqueness to it. That and the fact it sounds sort of like tech - technology. I have Voltek penned out as Joey's way of short-circuiting security devices and machines etc Slash the Meowth - It just works to me. He's a flea bitten alley cat and fights dirty. Plus, when you think i'm looking for a Flea and an Ozzie... Whoever gets this is a true scholar. Narcissa the Roselia - She's like the ultimate narcissist, it just works. Doopliss the Ditto - I do love me some video game references. ;D Anyways, i'll do some more for later.

Tepig: This Pokemon SO reminded me of Ryoya's cursed form on Ranma 1/2. So I nickname it P-Chan which is the name given to Ryoga's cursed form. It means Pig-Cute, lol.

So far, my nicknames have come from pop culture references.
Watson the Squirtle - Is a reference to John Watson, a character famous as being the "sidekick" of sorts to Sherlock Holmes, similar to how Watson is treated as a "sidekick" for my character Matthew.
Adonis the Shiny Spearow - Okay, I'm a mythology buff, so when I caught this Spearow, I decided it would be fitting to name a creature like that after a mythological character known for his beauty.
Winchester the Torchic - I'm a big fan of Supernatural. Torchic's personality is very loosely based off of Dean Winchester, one of the main characters of the show. Since I didn't want to give it an actual name, I just decided to use Winchester.

Nice work on that starter list Lex. As for my pokemon.
Autumn named her pokemon: Glitz, because it is all elegant and fancy sounding to her, Fumiko, because it means little girl in Japanese, Scout, because he is a scouting pokemon, Drew, because I had been drinking Mountain Dew at the time, while thinking about Nancy Drew (the game), Boss, because he was the boss of those nosy gang of pokemon, Hotrod, well it seemed to fit XD, Sweetpea because she looked like a pie and I was putting on sweetpea perfume at the time, Misty because it sounds pretty. I think I might have more pokemon, but those are the only ones I remember. c;
edit: I did forget one. Jessica was named Jessica, because that is my rl sister's name.

There are 4 good nicks for a Pikachu: Volt, Sparky, Pecha, Sparkle
Those are real good names for it. I think they sound cute. Or they could be used for a Pichu, I guess.

I love me some Sherlock Holmes.

Most of my names come from something, but they're not always fitting.
Saphira - she was named after the dragon from Eragon. Since Charizard is rather dragon-esque, I figured it fit. Plus it's a departure from the usual Charmander names.
Fiero - it means 'pride' in either Italian or Spanish, not entirely sure.
Tempesta - this means 'storm'. It fits her personality very well.
Starscream - EVERYONE'S FAVOURITE BACKSTABBING DECEPTICON. No real reason other than I have an inclination to name all my Skarmory Starscream thanks to my obsession around the time D/P came out..
Angelus - named after a song I used to like.
Niamh - I believe it means 'bright' or close to it. Mostly I just thought it was pretty.
Ignitus - the original inspiration came from a dragon with the same name in a Spyro game
Moka - named after the vampire from Rosario+Vampire c:

Hmm....after all the fuse about Snivy being called Smugleaf, if I ever get a Snivy, I think I'll nickname it Smugleaf.

Hmm, why is that? Some names can be cute. It's like in real life you don't call your dog,'Dog'. So why would you call a Pokemon by what it is?

I don't ever really come up with any unique names for my pokemon, just usually take the first letter of their name and give them a normal name like johnson, or Samanths. Never was too creative with names.

An update on my Pokemon, now that I have purchased a new one:
Felicia the Purrloin: Named after the secret identity of the infamous Black Cat, a thief from the Spider-Man comic books series. I thought it would fit considering she is described as a "thief", and because she actually is a "black cat".
