Name:
Oberon Dateri Gender:
Male Age:
Sixteen Appearance:
Upon a first glance it is typical for the casual passerby to wholly overlook the youth, as he does not exude an aura that encourages people to look long. A dark, foreboding ambiance always seems to linger in his presence and most find it hard to stay close to him because of the sensation of foreboding that envelops him. His appearance by itself is a reasonable enough deterrent for most, coupled with his uncanny abilities and general demeanor he leaves most wanting to place as much distance between themselves and him as possible.
He is relatively tall, if one considers 5’11 inches to be considerable height. It is only on the rare occasion that he encounters someone taller than himself, being nearly six feet enhances the daunting façade he has adopted. His features are slanted, lean and sharp. His eyes are narrow, giving most the impression that he is always glaring at something and their uncanny shade of maroon does little to help the matter. His vision is often obscured though and not simply because of the long bangs of silver hair that are carelessly swept over his face to prevent people from getting a good look at him. Due to an accident as a child his eyesight is poor, he has been prescribed glasses to help his impaired vision but he refuses to wear them. Oberon’s hair is a sleek, startling silver that under certain lighting can appear an earnest white. It is long and he dislikes having to cut it, he equally dislikes having it braided, which is most often what he does. He sometimes allows it to hang out or throws it into a ponytail – in length it stops mid-back. To offset its brightness his skin tone is a pale amber. Typically he wears a cloak over his clothing, looking like a ragged traveler as he moves through towns. Beneath that is neater, almost fashionable attire. Adorning a black sleeveless shirt he has overlaid it with a long-sleeved crimson jacket with silver trimmings and a trademark cross etched on the back. A set of dark brown jeans and black boots and leather gloves complete the ensemble. His keepsakes are a single silver earring, upon closer inspection the item is beat up and the silver paint has chipped but its precious to the boy. Personality:
He doesn’t like people – or perhaps it’s because they do not like him that he has become intolerant of others. Generally speaking, Oberon will avoid unnecessary confrontations with others though battling is an incensed passion he cannot escape. He dislikes having to immerse himself with others only because he finds it hard to relate to them, finding them too simplistic to cope with and often shuns others immediately and goes out of his way not to make skin-on-skin contact with others. This habit has borne to his isolation and theoretically the foundation of his strange clairvoyant ability. When he was very young he discovered that he had a strange power, by making skin-on-skin contact with another person there were occasions that he could glimpse the past of that individual, their present or scattered shards of their future. Whether this ability has transcended over the years of lack of use is unknown but because of the incident between himself and another student he covers himself. What he hasn’t realized is that he only reacts with people with strong desires but has no craving to test his powers. Since then he has surrounded himself in pokemon, touching them has proven safe enough and he relishes these moments of contact. It is with them that he seems calmest and possibly the time when Oberon is most approachable. He might not be chatty but he does enjoy having a conversation. He’s shy; he doesn’t understand his abilities or how to block them but genuinely wants to connect with others. On the off chances that he is relaxed he seems even charismatic, an exhilarating pride emanating from him. History:
Born in Viridian city his mother was a teacher in the small residential school, teaching children about pokemon. Oberon had mixed feelings about having his teaching be his mother, proud that she was there but dismayed when she embarrassed him. But other than that there were no hardships of which he could complain about and he there was never a shortage of friends or things to do. As children they always managed to entertain themselves, concocting schemes to venture past the town and try catching pokemon, daydreaming and making bets on whose pokemon would be strongest, little immature things that filled them with hope. During the summer of his last year in the school before he would go to visit Professor Oak’s laboratory and receive his first companion, strange things began to happen to him.
Whenever he touched on of his friends he’d be stricken with headaches, hot flashes and lightheadedness. Following these symptoms would be images that passed in near incomprehensible blurs that he couldn’t decipher. They troubled him but he kept them to himself.
Eventually he learned that by not touching people he didn’t experience the pain but in doing so people began to assume he was being stuck up and his friends drifted away in his last year. All but a few stayed, attempting to bring Oberon back among the fold. Their endeavors were appreciated but not reciprocated often by the worried child. On one occasion one of his friends, Darius, got annoyed with him and started a fight. When they touched the images flashed again, clearer this time. He saw a teen running around town shouting but couldn’t understand what was being said. He saw his friend clutching a sphere and then another flash of light before a winged shadow loomed over him. It opened its mouth and a plume of flames engulfed his vision and the terror he felt was too real for him to forget. He fled and shut himself in his room for almost two days before he could be coaxed out and forced to attend school.
Weeks past and the scenes he’d witness had faded but the fear was still lingering there, he didn’t learn why until a few days before graduation. The day had been relative normal until he saw Darius running down the walkway like houndoom’s were chasing him. When Oberon tried to ignore it his eyes caught the glint off the object that the boy was carrying and his heart sank as he realized it was a pokeball. He stopped the boy and in attempting to get information was given a rough shove by his former friend, it was small but the contact had been enough he the images flared again. They passed in blurs but he registered them this time. Darius watching as trainers filed into the Pokemon center, the young boy snatching a pokeball from one of the trays and running as a trainer called after him.
Oberon insisted that Darius give the pokemon back to its owner but he refused. Knowing that it was imperative and despite his own fears, Oberon tried to wrestle the pokeball away from the boy and only managed to fumble and drop it. The pokemon with burst out and soon the boys were darkened by the shadow of its occupant – a charizard. The pokemon’s trainer was likely a challenger for the Elite four and his yells sounded from somewhere off in the town.
To this day Oberon wasn’t sure what caused the Charizard to attack but all he knew was that he saw the jet of flames and knew he’d fainted at some point. When he came too he’d been airlifted to a hospital and had undergone intense surgery to help with the burns. Worse, his vision had been impaired and they were not sure how much of it could be restored. He spent half a year in and out of the hospital before he was capable of functioning without the physical and mental therapy. Most assumed he’d want nothing to do with pokemon after the life-threatening incident but instead he insisted on getting away from it all and traveling the world with them. Other info:
