Running straight out of the Olivine gym, Joey got to the end of the road it was on and looked over the whole of the city. Given that Olivine's gym was situated near the entrance, one which sloped downwards to the bay itself, it meant he had peerless surveillance over where he would need to go. "C'mon, c'mon already! They're usually easier than this to spot." His eyes scanning furtively, Joey was in dire need of getting his Pokemon, Slash, some medical attention following the pummelling he had received in the last fight. He was stored away safely in his Pokeball but the clock was ticking. Injuries such as those could be fatal if they were not treated properly. "THERE! Alright, gonna make it!" Bounding off with a jolt, he sped off following the path he had mapped out to the Pokemon Centre. It was somewhat far off, near towards the city's expansive harbour. But he would make it. There was nothing that would stop him from getting Slash fixed up. A short while later and a number of people barged into, Joey broke his way through into the Pokemon centre. Looking around, he immediately spotted a nurse on the reception. "Help! My Pokemon got severely beaten up. He needs attention. NOW!" Understanding the severity, the nurse went flying around the counter, took the Pokeball out of Joey's hands and went chasing off, two Chansey in tow.
Bounding off after them, he watched as the doors to the accident and emergency infirmary sealed shut, displaying a sign light up above the doors informing them of a patient being treated. Watching desperately, he placed a hand on the back of his head as he massaged it stressfully. "Argh! Dammit! I hate it when there's nothin' I can do in a situation like this!" Nearly sending his foot forward with a kick at a nearby waiting chair, he softened his expression into one of dejected ire as he turned around and with a heavy slump, fell into the seat. "Hang in there Slash, ol' buddy... You can make it..." His eyelids weighing down heavily, it had been sometime since he rested. Spurred on by the adrenaline of fighting another gym leader, his exhaustion had finally caught up with him. Snoozing off into a sleep, it was at the very most all he could do in playing this horrific waiting game. With some time passing, he woke up with a start as he heard a beeping sound and doors being whisked open. Getting up, he looked over to the doors and a solemn nurse. "Hey! What's up?! He's gonna be ok right? Right?!" Striding over to her, he had to remember to cool his tempers lest he wanted to be thrown out of her. "C'mon, you fixed him up good, right?" Her face looking up to his, she gave him a solemn nod. "Whaaaaaat?! But I thought Pokemon Centres could fix ANYTHING! What's wrong?" Finally responding to him, the nurse explained the problem. "I am not too sure what your poor Meowth went up against, but it's suffered some very grievous damage to its skeletal structure as well as being rendered unconscious from the severity of the blow. It appears the Pokemon has entered a comatose state as if its body shut down to try and prevent any permanent damage."
Taking out a medical clipboard, she looked over the notes on it. "We have been able to reposition its broken bones, cleaned up some of the obvious lesions and trauma. But the main issue is waking your Pokemon up from their coma." Shaking her head, she offered an apology. "I'm deeply sorry but that's simply something we're not equipped to deal with." His mouth ajar as he attempted to take in all the info, he shook his head. "So he's gonna be ok? He'll come to soon right?" Letting out a saddened sigh she tapped at something on the clipboard. "There's a danger he'll be permanently comatose if he doesn't receive the proper medical attention soon." "If you can't fix it here, then what the hell am I gonna do!?" "I'm getting to that. Thankfully, over the horizon, over the ebb and flow of the waves, lies a coastal city known as Cianwood." "Cianwood...? I remember Jasmine talkin' about that." "Mmm. Perhaps the most important part about Cianwood is that it has a reputable pharmacy that has been established for over hundreds of years. I am willing to bet my profession they will have what you need to revive your Meowth." Leering his eyes, Joey's expression took one of adamant determination. A person such as Joey was the type who once they had a goal in mind, they would do anything they could to achieve it. If he had to travel the seas in order to get to this place, it would be of no consequence. He would get it done and ensure Slash was saved from any lasting difficulty. "If that's where I need to go. I'm there. I'll head out now."
Raising a hand to stop him, the nurse shook her head. "I'm afraid that would be an impossibly reckless action. If you go now, you'll be lost at sea given that night is setting. And with the local lighthouse unable to provide any light..." His eyes bulging, he had failed to realise just how late it was. "Woah, what?! I've been asleep all this time...?! Gah! But you said Slash needs this as soon as possible? I can't just sit willy nilly on my arse. I gotta get this done. Now!" Nodding her head, she appeared a little uneasy about this truth. "Yes... It is quite urgent. But if you risk yourself going out there now, not only will he be unable to recover but the lives of yourself and all your Pokemon will be for naught. You don't seem to be the type of person who has lived out at sea. The waves between here and Cianwood are treacherous. One false move and that will be your end." Gritting his teeth, Joey was about ready to kick the waiting seat again. "Fine! Guess i'll just try my first thing sunrise. I need some air..." Heading out of the centre, he went through the sliding doors and noticed it was indeed night time. Despite the faint glow from some street lamps, it was a perfectly dark night. Only the luminous glow from the moon above illuminating the world around him, even reflecting off the ocean. "So... Over these waves is my destination, huh?" Walking over from the building, he made it over to the promenade and leaned forward as he rested over the walk fencing, preventing people from falling into the waters below. "This is gonna be somethin'. I paddled around at the beaches back in Fuschia but to go all the way from one place to another. That's gonna take some serious doin'." Shaking his head, he knew he would be able to overcome it. It was for Slash. And it wasn't like he was without a team of aquatic based Pokemon that could help him make the crossing.
Carefully watching the endless crash and retreat of the waves, he appeared to let himself be washed over by its calming sight. "Alright, i'm relaxed now. Gonna go hit the hay and i'll... Huh? What's with this? A sea fog? That rolled in kinda quick. Hmm... That ain't right. It's not... Fog." Stretching his arm out in front of him, he noticed the properties of it were definitely off. Given how quickly it had set upon the environment and how easy it was for him to peer through it, it was more like a clear smog. A sort of haze. The penny dropping, Joey worked out exactly what it was. "That's it. It's some kinda thick haze...?" Trailing off again, he turned around as something could be heard approaching. Hearing the familiar sound of a metallic thunk, it reminded him of the brief noise he had heard when that unknown stranger had exited Olivine gym. "I'm really not in the mood for this." He mumbled to himself as he saw a figure approaching off in the distance. Shrouded completely, only a faint black outline could be seen of the figure. Whoever it was, they had some sort of cowboy looking hat, a long coat and a somewhat muscular physique. Tensing his own muscles, Joey knew not who this was but if they were looking for trouble he was not about to entertain anything. Getting closer, the figure stopped. Apparently viewing Joey from head to toe. Before Joey could do anything else. A voice called out. It was not one he would recognise. "Ahhh... It's about bleedin' time. To think you've been barrelin' about Johto with all your escapades and it's takin' me this long to meet you face to face." Stepping forward once more, their spurs clanging nosily, they came into view. As they did, they spoke out once more. "'Bout time I got to see my own flesh an' blood, heh."
His eyes widening with absolute shock, it took him a short while but he would finally recognise this stranger standing before him. His teeth gritting, muscles tensing ruefully, Joey spat out at the sight of him. "Y-YOU!!" Pulling something of a surprised, almost hurt expression, the man responded. "C'mon, son! That's no way to treat ya old man, is it? You an' me. We got a lot of catching up to do. A good ol' family reunion!" His face twitching angrily, Joey could feel every fibre of his being igniting in rage at the sight of this man. It was no doubt his father, Royce. But he would never consider him a father. Walking out on him and his mother, it was a title Royce did not deserve. That and his seedy affiliation with Team Rocket. "*****! RAAAAAAAARGH!" His body carrying itself, Joey rampaged forward with a swift sprint towards his dad. Not caring if he was his own father, the atrocities he had committed and all the crimes he had been a part of, he would end him here. "Tch. I was hopin' for a manly hug together. But if you insist... HMMMPH!" As agile and deft as Joey's movements were, his right hook failed to connect miserably. Weaving out carefully, Royce leant inwards as he raised his knee and slammed it into his son's chest. "I can tell yer angry. Part of me doesn't blame you but get over yourself. Carry on like that and you've not grown up at all from that crybaby you used t'be." Retreating back into the thick haze, eh reappeared again, complete with the jangle of his spurs. Trying to recover the wind that had been knocked out of his sails, Joey straightened back up before eyeing his father murderously.
"I will end you." Dashing off again he paid careful attention this time to the fact his dad was likely an expert brawler. Feinting with one fist, he led in with the other, missing by a fraction but was able to use the fist he had feinted with to lash out with a glancing blow to his lower jaw. Reeling backwards a few hops, Royce wiped the blood from his mouth before spitting it away. "Pffft! Hah! You definitely take after me, kiddo. Cool it. I got a proposition for you." His eyes glinting devilishly, it was clear Royce was here for one reason and one reason only. Fuelled by all the years of rage he had bottled up, Joey yelled out. "SCREW YOU! I don't want to hear it. You think you can disappear and reappear into my life like it's nothing?! Huh?! DO YOU?! SON OF A B-!" Raising his hands, Royce cut in. "Woah-hoah-hoah. That's a bit harsh to ya old man ain't it? I was never there? Pftahahahaha. You make me laugh, kid. I was there for yer gym fight weren't I? Smooth moves by the way. Stomped that lass like the weakling she was. In fact, it was from viewin' ya prowess in that gym fight that got me thinkin'. Maybe I oughta offer you a place by my side. I know I ain't been the best dad around. But think about it. You and me, son. Together, we'll take over Team Rocket. Sounds good, eh? Hahahahaha. I've been watchin' ya for some time kiddo. The gym fights, the Rocket fights, hell even those chumps who posed as you and ya buds. You've done me proud, m'boy."
Ready to go in for another strike, he wanted nothing more than to demolish this obnoxious demon's face in. Instead, his offer would ignite his hatred even further. "You want me, to come with you and take over the Rockets?! YOU'RE INSANE! You think i'd do that?! After everything you've done and the Rockets? Dammit! You ain't no father o' mine and i'll be dead the day i'm seen becoming a Rocket!" His fists clenching angrily, Royce merely smirked at his son's reaction. "Heh. I guess you're gonna need some time to think it over, eh? Hahahaha! No matter. Offer stands." Whimsically reaching for his hat and giving him a parting gesture, Royce stepped back and with a slam down of a Pokeball to the ground, a shadowy flying creature swept through the air. "Best be off. It was a nice lil' reunion. I'll be back though, son. Hopefully you'll reconsider the offer." Sporting a wild grin that was clearly something Joey had inherited, it was at that moment Joey snapped even further. "Come back here! We ain't done just yet. The part where I beat you to a bloody pulp hasn't happened yet! Damn you!" Darting forwards again, he raised his right fist, poised to strike out with a hefty punch but Royce was instead saved by swooping Pokemon he had summoned earlier. An arm raised as he grappled onto the Pokemon's feet, Royce looked down at Joey and gave him a mock salute. "So long, heheheh!" Disappearing off into the haze, it would be mere moments later that the haze itself also parted.
Looking up into the air angrily, Joey was besieged with anger. He had been ambushed by his old man and he was powerless to do anything. He could've gone for his Pokemon and thwarted him that way but he didn't. He was blinded and he went straight to resorting to violence to try and defeat him. Trembling, he looked up to the moon itself and with a mighty roar, dispelled his seething rage. "RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGH!!!!!!!!!" Falling to his knees, Joey knew he had blown a perfectly good chance to set right a wrong. But he had failed spectacularly. "*****... I'll get you yet..." His hands resting on top of his legs, he looked up at the sky and sighed. Next time. Next time he would have his revenge against that dastardly man. Collecting himself, he cradled onto his stomach, still feeling the blow from earlier and headed back to the Pokemon Centre. "I'm gonna rest up and see to Slash first... That's most important." Retiring away, the harbour side of Olivine was left perfectly quiet. Getting a room for the night, he crashed into bed, lying wide awake staring at the ceiling. He had not seen his father in many years. Since he was a young child. "Dammit! What does that ***** want?!" Leering at the ceiling as if his father's face had materialised there, he wanted nothing more than to smash his face off the side of the planet. Part of him was confused though. He knew he was a lousy father and a despicable villain from all his criminal acts, having earnt the moniker the scourge. But why had he been watching all his fights? "Doesn't matter. Just gotta... Sleep... Save... Slash...Zzzzz..."
Eventually falling to the sleep, it wasn't the comfiest of slumbers. Having experienced a very unsettling nightmare, he woke the next day with a cold sweat. Rubbing his hands over his face, he reassured himself he was back in reality. "Urgh... What a dream... I'd never join Team Rocket." Absent mindedly yawning, his eyes trailed over and noticed sunlight peeping through the blinds. "ALRIGHT! It's time!" Jumping out of bed, he began his preparations. Running off to grab some food from the canteen, he bought out Hoodlum and Calistra who he advised of the day before. Keeping them with him, he hastily retrieved Slash, saying farewell to the nurse and made a couple of party alterations. There was one Pokemon in particular he could count on to cross this ocean. Last but not least he even bought some speedos for the occasion. There was no way he was going to get his favourite attire wet. Placing them on, he proceeded out the building to get a good look at the sort of weather they would be braving, Cali and Hood in tow.
"Yo waddup J-Baller. What the dealy? You goin' swimminz?! Holla back. I ain't fakin' jacks. A true O.G. ain't down wit' dat." Nervously looking over into the waters below, the gangsta lizard didn't seem all too keen on braving the wet conditions. Eyeing the sea itself with some mutual suspicion, Calistra was hardly swimming away with the idea. "Hmph. The thug has a point. What is this...? This ocean? It is like an endless streaming river. Can't the say the idea of getting soaked interests me." Haughtily raising her head off to the side, it appeared that the two of them were none too keen on giving this a shot. "I ain't lifted to be parlayin' out on da seas. Iz you trazy? Dat s@%&'s wack, yo!" Folding her arms and looking off to the horizon, the ocean was something Calistra had never seen before and the uncertainty of it was definitely something she would prefer to explore some other time. "Allow us to remain here. We'll keep guard of the room." Looking up to Calistra, Hoodlum nodded his head enthusiastically. "Ay ay ay, mami Cali got the true idea fasho. Watch ya back here, na mean?" Lifting up some of the goggles he had bought from the Pokemon centre's tourist booth, Joey sighed. "Don't get me wrong, I ain't gonna force you guys but... You sure? Could be an adventure in itself." Realising he was likely unable to sway their opinion on the matter, he nodded in a resigned manner and headed back to the Pokemon Centre. "Just make sure nobody jacks my gear ok? That jacket means a lot to me." "Yo word up J-dawg, you know it. Me an' shorty gunna stay peace on dat you. RE-PRE-SENT." Rolling her eyes, Calistra wasn't the fondest of Hoodlum's inane comments but she would prefer it over sailing the seas. "I'll remain in human form whilst occupying the place. Come on you. Move." Saying goodbye to their trainer, Joey stopped off at the PC, still clad in his swimmer gear, making a couple of last minute additions.
Strolling away from Olivine City itself and onto the beach shore which connected with the water route 40 itself, Joey limbered himself up with a few stretches before he nodded his head as he surveyed the lengthy sea expanse itself. "No turnin' back now." Grabbing the Pokeballs he had taken with him, he tossed the majority of them forward, revealing none other than a recurring theme of able swimming monsters. "Hey guys! How goes it?" Lockjaw, Yojimbo, Davy Jones and more importantly Puka the surfing Pikachu greeted him with some excitement. The fact they were out and about meant they had some time to shine. "A lot's happened guys but here's the deal. We need to cross the ocean to get to a place to fix up Slash... He got pretty beat up and he's relying on us to help him." Receiving a number of grunts and cries in acknowledgement, the only one who didn't respond was Yojimbo who folded his arms and tapped his foot impatiently. Sighing, Joey rolled his eyes before laughing. "...And copious amounts of untold riches. Yes, yes. You'll get paid handsomely, Yojimbo." Suddenly perking up to even more of an enthusiastic fervour than his team mates, Lockjaw and Davy Jones were somewhat taken aback by the otter's sudden departure. Strolling over, Joey knelt down beside the Pikachu he had who possessed a rather impressive surfing board. "Long time no see, eh Puka? What did I promise ya all that time ago, eh? Surf is up my friend!" Excitedly turning around and noticing the lush waves and opportunity to get some surfboarding in, it seemed the Pikachu was incredibly happy Joey had held up his part of the bargain. In truth, Joey had stolen him as a means to an end whilst first journeying in Johto. Having neglected to use him all that much, Joey had promised the avid surfer Pikachu a chance to get some surfing in and this was as good as any.
"If you guys don't mind, i'd prefer you guys patrollin' alongside me and Puka as we make to surf along the waves. Ok. Here goes nothing." Picking up the surf board Puka possessed, he placed the Pikachu on his shoulder before going dashing onwards onto the board itself and surfing onwards, with Puka now jumping off to the front of the board. Letting out a round of cries, Lockjaw, Yojimbo and Davy Jones all went darting after them and it wasn't long before they had pushed out to sea and were on their way. Next stop: Cianwood. "Wooohoooooo! THIS IS AWESOME!" Yelled Joey as they paddled out further into the route, taking a moment now and again to ride the crest of the wave, his other Pokemon weaving in and out around them.
