When she stepped out of Professor Oak’s lab, Beatrix felt as though the sun was shining twice as brightly as before. She looked down at the pokeball in her hand and felt a smile spread across her face. Her first Pokemon.
Since she’d been a little girl, Beatrix had wanted a Pokemon for her own, a passionately loyal partner who would journey alongside her and be with her through any challenges that came up on the way.
Professor Oak had been a very interesting man to meet. She had expected him to be serious and busy, but he was kind, quirky and talkative. Very talkative. He had spent a long while going through the various strengths and abilities of the Pokemon he offered so that, when he finally got round to showing her the starters, Beatrix was restless and eager to get on. It took her only a few minutes of interacting with each Pokemon to know that the bright-eyed Bulbasaur who came to sit by her feet was the one for her.
“Hello, you” Beatrix had said with a smile.
The Bulbasaur held her gaze for a long moment before reaching out a clawed paw to tug at the edge of her trousers.
“Saaaur,” it had replied in return. The Squirtle ran up to try and catch Beatrix’s attention but the Bulbasaur flicked out a vine to firmly stop it in its tracks. The Squirtle bumped to a halt, looking confused, before being effortlessly pushed away by the vine. The Bulbasaur kept its eyes on Beatrix. Beatrix laughed at the show of protection and knelt to pet it.
"I think you and I are going to get along well".
After picking up her new Bulbasaur, Beatrix went to check on her father. She gave him a long a hug and pet old Silky the Camerupt one last time before picking up her packed rucksack and heading out to route 29. As soon as she reached the edge of the route she pulled out the Pokeball and released her Bulbasaur with a flash of red light. As soon as it appeared, the Pokemon raced to sit by her side.
“You’re a friendly one,” Beatrix said, “I was thinking of calling you Medley. Would you like that?”
The Bulbasaur didn’t reply. It just looked up at Beatrix with steady eyes. Beatrix pointed at it. “Medley” she said clearly, and then pointed at herself, “Beatrix”. Medley blinked and gave what sounded like a satisfied grunt. “Good enough,” Beatrix smiled.
Route 29 was beautiful and sunny. Beatrix walked at an easy, unhurried pace along the path, her thoughts flickering between her father back in New Bark Town and the exciting adventures that lay ahead. Medley shifted between walking at Beatrix’s heels and running suddenly at bushes or patches of grass, chasing after noises that Beatrix couldn’t hear. Each time Beatrix would call her back. “Medley!” After a while, there was no doubt that Medley knew her name for she would come racing back to run in circles around Beatrix’s legs every time she was called. Beatrix laughed at the Bulbasaur’s energy. Medley seemed very protective of her already and that thought warmed her heart as she walked, and some of the nerves that came with starting this journey started to seep away.

Little did Beatrix know that as she and Medley played that they were being watched by an inhabitant of the grass patches. The Pokemon was willing to allow them to run around for a little while as it did not want to jump out too early and make a regrettable error however after enough time passed it grew more confident in stepping out and making it's presence known. It was not a large Pokemon by any means in any category outside of the size of it's teeth which were huge for it's body size. It's small size allowed it to get very close to Beatrix and Medley before jumping out of a patch of grass with it's red eyes staring at them. The young Rattata was taking a bit of a risk by choosing to battle a human but it had a lot of confidence in it's strength. The young rat slowly drew closer to the pair until it was only about 3 feet away from them before coming to a halt it's eyes still locked onto them ready to strike. Though Beatrix and Medley had not been aggressive at all the purple Pokemon had still come looking for a fight and it would not take no for an answer. Baring it's fangs as it waited for her to make a move Rattata could hardly contain the rush of energy as the battle was about to get underway. Waiting for the human to make her move put Rattata in a state of agony as it wanted to get things started right away however even it had enough honor to wait until Beatrix made a move before attacking. A level 5 Rattata would like to battle. Please select a Pokemon.

Beatrix was just about to pull out her town map to get a better idea of how far she and Medley had walked when the Rattata pounced out of the bushes, teeth bared and fur bristling. Beatrix gave a startled yelp, jarring to a stop and staring down at the small Pokemon. It locked eyes with her in an aggressive stare and Beatrix had the feeling that if she moved too suddenly it would leap at her.
Medley, on the other hand, seemed completely prepared for this. She leapt to put herself between Beatrix and the Rattata, growling threateningly. She paused, waiting for a command.
Beatrix shook herself out of her initial shock and grinned as adrenaline flowed through her. Her first battle! Digging back to what she had remembered in her trainer school days, Beatrix pointed at the Rattata with a flourish.
“Medley, tackle that Rattata,” she said confidently, looking down at the Bulbasaur who was buzzing with tense energy. Although she had never commanded Medley before, the Bulbasaur’s eagerness to stay by her side had been clear from her walk and she had a feeling that Medley knew exactly what to do.

The wild rattata chattered back at the bulbous pokémon who'd stepped up to the challenge, taking a few steps back so as to put a bit of distance between them. Its tail twitched up and down for a couple seconds while it considered how it wanted to begin this fight. This wasn't its first fight. Rattata was tough! It had battle its way higher and higher up the food chain in route 29 and now it was time to test itself against a trainer. It had to start out strong, otherwise it'd be face down in the dirt like the pidgeys and weaker of its kind who had been unlucky enough to face off against one. With Beatrix calling out her attack Rattata jolted into action. The speedy ball of purple fur raced forward, angling its head down, and bashed into Medley with its own tackle attack. The bulbasaur's stout form made it easy to absorb, the bulkier pokémon feeling a bit of a push from the impact but otherwise in pretty good shape to retaliate. Rattata whipped around to retreat and Medley took chase. Knowing the little rat was faster she let slip one of her vines to snap the air to the side of her opponent and then redirect her own path to the other side in preparation. The rattata acted just as planned, startled by the crack of air it hopped away from the noise. Skidding to slow and beginning to run away from the assumed missed attack the wild pokémon was hit with Medley's tackle. Beatrix drew a sharp breath as she watched the Rattata barrel into Medley, concern for her Pokemon flaring up. She had never seen Medley fight before, and has no previous experience to know how capable she was of taking a hit. However, Medley endured the hit well and immediately chased after the Rattata to deliver a strong tackle. As far as Beatrix could tell, the two seemed to be on roughly even ground. Nevertheless, Beatrix wanted to be sure that Medley wasn’t overcome by the Rattata which was faster than the Bulbasaur.
“Medley use growl and then follow up with a tackle!” she called, moving forwards to follow the two Pokemon as their fight moved along the trail.

The battle was getting rather heated as the two pokémon stared each other down having broken away from one another. Though, as Beatrix called for the next move the tension lifted slightly. Medley grinned, the curl of her lips shifting into a soft smile as she readjusted her positioning. Making herself appear less intimidating the grass type let a cutesy growl rumble from her throat. Rattata's head lifted, ears twitching at the noise. Its angry visage lost some of its edge as it, too shifted its stance. Rattata bounded forward and swung itself around, lolling its tail back and forth gently in some odd display of faith. Medley blinked blankly, unsure of how to take the motion, but it certainly made the little critter seem less dangerous than she'd initially thought. Still, her new trainer had further instructions that needed to be carried out. Rattata continued with the tail wagging, hopping to a different location nearly close enough to whap Medley in the face with the furry appendage. That made it an easy target. Reeling back, the bulbasaur shuffled to the side and leapt for the near Rattata. With a squeak the purple rat went tumbling away. Beatrix let out a sigh of relief as the Rattata didn’t attack Medley and her Bulbasaur surged forward to deliver an accurate hit. The Rattata wasn’t posing as much of a threat as she thought it would. Then something tickled the back of Beatrix’s mind and, remembering a lesson from Pokemon Trainer’s School, she realised what had just happened.
“Be careful, Medley” Beatrix called out, her hands balling into anxious fists at her side, “Your defence is down!” Beatrix quickly thought it through. The Rattata was a smart little thing. By using tail whip twice, Medley had lost the advantage of having lowered the Rattata’s attack and had the tables turned on her. Now any attack of the Rattata would hit much more strongly. Beatrix took a deep breath as she decided that the best strategy now, may just to be to go all out and hope to defeat the Rattata before it did too much damage to Medley.
“Hit it with another tackle, Medley” Beatrix said, “You can do it!”
*oops, sorry! I had seen other people do it in threads and I didn’t realise. Thanks for letting me off this time, I’ll stick to one battle move from now on.

Rattata might have decided to show some restraint in the last round but all that did was prolong a battle it knew it could win if it kept up the attack. Medley had taken quite a hit in the opening round and if it could do a repeat of that attack that she would be in trouble. Given Rattata's nature of being on the aggressive side there was little choice to make here as it did not want to allow her to catch up after doing so well up until now. True as that may be it still could not shake the thought of remaining cautious from it's mind. After thinking over the options Rattata worked up enough confidence to rush towards Medley with a full body Tackle attack to try and widen the gap between it and the young Bulbasaur. The attack hit spot on and caused considerable damage to Medley though thanks to her decent build she was able to hang on. As he unleashed a full bodied Tackle of her own Rattata emerged with the upper hand however she was not very fare behind and still very much in the fight which was discouraging to Rattata as it was hoping she would be ready to give up by now. The bad news was that there was a very real danger of Medley being knocked out with the next attack. Beatrix would have quite a decision to make as the next round was about to get underway. Battle

Beatrix had hoped that the Rattata would stick to non-offensive attacks long enough for Medley to get the upper hand. Her stomach sank as she watched the Rattata bowl into Medley again. Even though the Bulbasaur managed to deliver another hit, the effects of the battle were starting to become clear. The small grass type was huffing heavily with exertion and when she shifted to adjust her position, Beatrix could see a wince of pain flash across the Bulbasaur’s face. With her defence so low, another attack may just be too much.
Beatrix knew that she had to step in, and there were two options. She could either use a precious potion to keep Medley going, or she could throw a pokeball and try to end the battle by catching the Rattata. The latter route would end the battle more quickly if it worked, but if the Rattata escaped it would hit Medley and… Beatrix looked at Medley. She looked so eager to win this fight. Beatrix wanted to take the risk, but she also didn’t want to lose the trust she had formed with Medley so early on by letting her faint.
Knowing time was short, Beatrix flipped her bag off her back and opened a pocket with a quick fluid motion. She pulled out a Potion as she called Medley over, suddenly happy that she had spent that morning making sure the Bulbasaur would come when she called. Medley came running, although her eyes narrowed when she saw the potion. Did she not know what a potion was? Or was she offended that Beatrix thought she needed help?
“Come on, Medley,” Beatrix said as soothingly as she could, coaxing Medley to take the potion, “this will help.” The effects were almost instantaneous. Medley’s eyes brightened, and when she eagerly whipped around to face the Rattata she moved without pain or hesitation. From that movement, Beatrix could tell that Medley had recovered completely. Beatrix offhandedly wondered what they put in potions for them to make them work so effectively.
At the cost of a potion, the battle had now turned in their favour. The Rattata was still worn and tired after battling, and Medley had recovered and returned to full fighting spirits. Even if the Rattata used the advantage of its speed, Medley should be able to withstand it long enough to end the battle.
“Use tackle when its guard is down. Hit it with everything you’ve got!”
Tl;dr: had a crisis, used up one potion, used tackle

Battle! The Rattata watched the Human and her walking pod of Salad closely as the woman coaxed the young creature over to her, using some strange bottle on her that admitted some sort of mist. What did it do? Why did the Bulbasaur look less weak now? It would make it weak! It turned as soon as Medley turned around to face it again, moving its tail in a rounding fashion that caught Medley in a trance that lowered her defense for a second time this battle. She wouldn't get away with getting mysteriously better like that!
And before the other Pokemon could move a muscle in retort, it struck, launching itself forward in a flurry of purple limbs, an aura forming itself around the running Pokemon until it finally slammed into Medley, causing her to stagger back. But she was encouraged now, she had her trainer behind her! And so she launched herself at the retreating Rattata, slamming into it and knocking it to the floor, where it lay and didn't get back up again, too tired to move. Medley had won! She looked back to Beatrix to see what she would do next.--Wild Rattata |Level 5|HP: 0/19Status: Normal Rattata used Tail whip! Kat Says- Hey, your first battle won huh? Medley bested that Rattata and gained 3 levels, and is now Level 8! She learned Leech Seed, way to go! That Rattata is just laying there now. You can throw a Pokeball at it, if you'd like! I won't tell anyone. Beatrix cringed as the Rattata slammed into Medley after performing another tail whip. The Bulbasaur’s defence was so low that the hit sent her stumbling backwards, unlike before where she had been able to take the hits and keep her balance. Then, Medley threw herself at the Rattata again and Beatrix held her breath as the Rattata fell. A moment passed, then two, and the Rattata lay motionless making no move to get up. “Bulba!” Medley cried, turning back to watch her human, her little chest puffed up with pride and her eyes shining with truimph. Beatrix let out the breath she had been holding in a great woosh and smiled widely, a fist hitting the air as she gave a little cheer. “You did it, Medley!” she said, coming over to pet the Bulbasaur on its head. Medley closed her eyes contentedly at the praise. Beatrix looked over at the fallen Rattata. Although she didn’t have the best feelings towards the rodent who had hurt Medley so badly, she had to admit that its fighting spirit would make it a strong companion. She pulled a pokeball from her belt and touched it to the Rattata’s fur. A bright red light washed over the Rattata, and it was caught. RattataName: Bite Me Gender: Male Level: 5 Ability: Guts Attacks: Tackle, Tail Whip, Quick Attack Nature/Personality: Brave; Likes to thrash about. Beatrix stood up and looked around. She could go wandering around the route looking for more battles with Medley, but she felt the traveller's urge to keep moving inside her. She could always come back later if she needed to. OOC: Thanks Kataya! Ending thread to for now to continue in Cherrygrove. Planning to trade Bite Me for an Alolan Rattata. Edit: Rattata now traded away for Alolan Rattata!
