Name: Lucan Hannes
Age: 14
Gender: Male
Trainer Type: Pokémon Trainer
Hometown: Malie City
Appearance: Lucan is a skinny youngster, a bit shorter than average for his age, with pale skin and dark ruffled hair, a sharp fringe on the left of his forehead. Another most notable quality are his blue-green eyes, which are quite wide and often light up with excitement, whenever the boy is riled up for whatever reason. He has a round visage, and delicate nose. Though not chubby by any means, his smooth cheeks are noticeable, and blush violently in a number of occasion when he is excited or embarassed.
Very thin and apparently fragile in the upper body, Lucan is more resilient than he appears, and he has strong slender legs for walking, from a childhood spent outside and trips with his parents on Mt. Hokulani in Alola.
Except for his head, he has extremely few body hair, and he gets kind of irritated if someone draws attention to that, particularly to the complete absence of the slightest facial hair, as he would very much like to at least start growing a beard.
Lucan loves to wear a black and gold baseball cap backwards, the fringe sticking out of the hat and dangling in front of his forehead. His favourite colours to wear are red, gold, black and white, and he usually sports a red and black shirt with short sleeves, long black and gold trousers, and red sport shoes. For this reason, he has sometimes been told he resembles a certain other Trainer from Johto. This amuses Lucan, and he jokes about that in one way or another.
In his backpack, which is reddish brown and kind of worn, being actually his mother's from when she was a Trainer, he carries a couple more shirts and a scarf for cold times. He hopes to someday acquire clothes that are "epic enough" for his journey. He carries a golden belt bag he stores important small items in and Pokéballs around.
His most recognizable accessory is his beloved notebook, which Lucan always has ready at hand complete with pen in case something worth rhyming about happens. Other than that, being fascinated with legends and folklore, he'll probably be interested in wearable souvenirs if he finds some on the journey.
His arms, and really any patch of skin he exposes for too long tends to feature scratches and bruises because of the boy's recklesness.
Personality: Lucan is energetic, somewhat flamboyant and easily excited. More than everything, he loves epic stories, possibly violent, exciting and over the top, and enjoys hearing, reading and telling them. He carries a notebook on which he narrates notable events in his daily life, often in rhyme, and always exaggerating for the sake of baroque epicness. Sometimes, he even tries speaking in rhyme or song on the fly, but this tends to only happen when in the company of really close friends or in situations of real excitement and fervor.
He can be a difficult person to be around. Lucan has a notoriously hot temper and gets irritated quickly. On the other hand, his predilection for banter and witty remarks can as easily irritate others. Depending on circumstances, this makes his relationship with others often a stormy one, expecially in the beginning. He is a bit of a loner by instinct, and not the best at socializing with people, but he could develop strong friendships if under the right circumstances.
Lucan does seem to live in its own world the majority of the time, and maybe naive on some issues but he is not deluded or stupid. His attitude is simply his way to get the most emotions out of life, and somewhat of a defense against his own fears or incomprehensions by others. Though more reckless than brave, Lucan tends nonetheless to stand up to what he perceives as injustice, and more often than not he could try to straight up punch someone before throwing a Pokéball or talk things out.
Far more comfortable around Pokémon and nature than with people, Lucan tends to avoid acknowledging his sensitive side and occasional need for affection and comfort, and will often resort to his harsh and weird persona as a shield. Lucan’s slight complex about his own lack of physical presence doesn’t exactly help, either.
REALLY uncomfortable in caves or dark buildings. He will face those if he feels he can’t avoid it, but he will be nervous and incredibly susceptible when doing so, and often complain about it if others are present.
Situations with limited visibility such as snowstorms or sandstorms make him nervous as well.
History: Lucan was born and raised in Malie City, on Ula Ula Island in Alola. As a child, he loved the town’s library, in which his uncle Lucius worked, and where he devoured the books about myths and legends as soon as he could read, sparking his dreams of adventure. His second favourite place was Malie Garden, where he often went playing with his older cousin Nero, a boy of similarly eccentric nature, but great charisma. Nero was even more reckless than him, and quite strong, which Lucan admired, while also envying a little.
At the time, their company of friends was quite large, a lot of other kids drawn in by Nero’s reputation, some of which started to become friends with Lucan as well. However, Lucan soon noticed that the other kids were first and foremost Nero’s entourage, partially because Lucan’s own awkwardness, and partially because Nero himself made sure of that by his stated role as leader, and making so that Lucan rarely encountered others without him. Lucan ended up feeling like the one everyone talked to just because he was Nero’s cousin. At the same time, he was somewhat dependent on Nero to make new acquaintances.
That would change when he was ten, with the arrive of Harriett. The girl came from the Hoenn Region, to spend summer in Ula Ula, and took Nero’s little gang by storm with both her wits and looks, by standing up to Nero himself when he tried to impress the newcomer. She eventually joined the group of her own accord, while refusing to aknowledge Nero’s full leadership. That left Lucan’s cousin impressed and frustrated at the same time, while sparking the interest of Tracey and Barry, two brothers who where a bit closer with young Lucan.
Meanwhile, Lucan himself was awfully awkward and shy around the smart, pretty, and somewhat intimidating Harriett. By virtue of the fact that Harriett once praised Tracey for his kindness towards Lucan, the brothers started inviting him to play and hang out with them and the girl as well, even though Nero sometimes found ot and barged in uninvited, attempting to retain his leadership and be noticed by Harriett. Nero trusted Lucan with telling him about their little splinter group and what Harriett said or did, but the younger cousin was growing tired of that, and eventually refused to do Nero’s bidding.
While they were arguing, Barry came bringing the fresh news of an incident in which a wild Alolan Meowth snatched Harriett’s shining pendant and fled in the Malie Garden. She was in tears, and Nero seized the occasion to step up and try to console her. She desperately wanted the pendant back, and while Nero proclaimed vigorously he would bring it back, being the only one in the group with a Pokémon (a Piplup), Lucan slipped away towards the Garden, only noticed by Tracey, his mind set with one and only one purpose: be the hero, this time.
His knowledge of the Garden brought him relatively quickly to the Meowth’s whereabouts, and Lucan found the Pokémon, still holding and admiring the pendant. Initially, Meowth was curious and peaceful towards the boy, but it got aggressive as soon as he realized he was aiming to take its shiny conquest away.
Desperate and reckless as usual, Lucan straight up attacked the Meowth, latching onto the Pokémon and getting scratched on the arms and legs, but getting a hold of the pendant.
He was almost sure he did it, when Meowth cried out loud… and mother Persian arrived.
Lucan stood up, cornered, sure he would be maimed or severely injured if not worse, single minded on trying to run past them to deliver the pendant. A desperate attempt… if it weren’t for Tracey, which suddenly arrived to save Lucan, distracting Persian and making his friend get away.
Seeing the Pokémon turn on Tracey, though, Lucan once again got Persian’s attention to himself and started running. The escape and battle went on for a while, and eventually Nero’s Piplup arrived at the scene with the two injured boys and tried to fight off Persian. In the end, though, Nero let confidence get the best of him and Piplup was almost defeated. It was only thanks to Tracey’s quick reflexes if the three got away.
Amidst the confusion, the pendant was broken when Lucan instinctively raised the hand holding it in front of his face to protect from Persian’s last attack. Lucan felt incredibly guilty for that, expecially when he saw Harriett crying even more, and even though she said she wasn’t mad with him, Lucan didn’t feel that way.
Also, she was visibly in awe of Tracey’s exploits in the rescue, and worried about the injuries he suffered. Lucan got the message. He had failed, in more ways than one.
Nero worsened the situation by offering to buy a prettier pendant for Harriett himself, to which she angrily explained it being her grandma’s, and irreplaceable. At that point, Nero apologized for Lucan’s “lack of abnegation” in defending the pendant, due to his being scared.
That was the moment Lucan punched him, furious with pain and humiliation, letting it all out. It took all of Tracey and Barry to get him off his cousin, which smartly didn’t react in front of Harriett, and let her scald Lucan once more for losing control, being only stopped by Tracey. At this point, Lucan was crying, furious and bleeding, and had to limp his way home alone.
After that, and the end of summer, it only went worse. Harriett returned to Hoenn, and Tracey and Barry moved from Malie as well, and then Lucan was left with his furious cousin and the rest of the gang. Nero’s revenge and bullying on Lucan started out subtle, but became increasingly more intense, culminating in an episode in which Lucan was locked for hours in a storage closet, contributing to his fear of caves and close, dark places.
In the end, the situation in Malie became unbearable, and Lucan was glad when a job opportunity brought his family back to Johto, where they came from. Initially, he lived in New Bark Town, learning to know the nature around the town, and the Pokémon leaving there, quite isolated from boys his age, and studying the legends of Johto. Now, after some years of growth, reflection and pleading with worried parents, he is ready to start his own epic journey!
Goals: Now that he feels ready, Lucan sets off to face against Johto’s Gyms in the Pokémon League journey, believing this to the path with the most adventures and fights on his way, and occasions to shine.
His ultimate purpose is to visit and explore all legendary and mythical locations in the Regions of Johto and Kanto, and write a modern poem on his adventure in the search of legends, while possibly discovering more unknown secrets. To encounter the most legendary Pokémon would be the coronation of his dream, and he sees the League path just as a recognized way to get stronger as a Trainer and explore the world.
He sees Pokémon as comrades of a small “army” he is general of. The most important thing for him is to have Pokémon that are loyal and willing to act together with him and each ohter, so he could free a Pokémon that is either unhappy with him or doesn’t get along well with the other team members.
His anger towards Nero and sadness for losing contact with Tracey, Barry and Harriett have mostly subsided, as Lucan mainly wants to start over with his life.
However, should he meet them again, old feelings and memories are sure to come back, probably for quite spectacular results.
Deep down, a part of Lucan probably hopes for someone else to share at least a part of his journey with. Does he know? Will he admit it? Only time will tell.
Other Info: Quite a messy eater, sometimes really loud voice. Appreciates trivial humour. Often catches colds.
Family: Miles, father, 46 years old. Julia, mother, 44.
Fanny, sister, 5 years old. Joifully pesters Lucan, which seems to ignore her but actually has a bit of a soft spot for her.
