It had been two weeks since Ethan Summers had arrived in this region to stay with his aunt and uncle, they had been nothing but kind and patient with him, their hospitality impeccable. That did not however change the fact that New Bark Town was a small place, not much for a teenager to do around here, especially for someone as independent as Ethan, so his aunt suggested visiting Professor Elm’s Lab. Knowing how interesting Ethan found most pokemon and that he had brought a few with him from Alola that the Professor might be interested in seeing as well. He was not too keen on seeing some Professor, but if it would help to put a stop to his aunt fussing over him and acting like he was going to break or something, then it seemed worth the impending lecture from this Professor type.
After breakfast Ethan informed them of his intentions’, which to no one’s surprised, was meet by approval by the rest of the family. So 10 minutes later he was on his way, it was not a long trip, but Ethan appreciated the warm weather. Upon arrival he knocked on the door, only to find it swinging open. It seemed a bit strange, pokemon thief’s could not be that uncommon around here, so Ethan entered the laboratory closing the door behind him. “Hello! Is anybody here?” He started walking, looking at all that fancy technology, wondering if his aunt had told anyone that he was coming?

There was a quiet hum that carried throughout the laboratory, bouncing off of the open ceiling of the warehouse-like two story building. There were a couple sets of lights on which signaled there was likely at least someone around but other than the soft whir of machinery there didn't seem to be any person busily working. But there was definitely someone here. After Ethan called out there was a sudden snort that echoed from the upstairs. A moment of silence followed before the squeak of a wheeled chair signaled movement above. Soon thereafter a tall man in a wrinkled lab coat appeared at the top of the left set of stairs.
"Hello!" he called back, giving half a wave before groggily making a hurried descent to meet his guest. He fixed his glasses on his face and shoved a disheveled range of notes back into his chest pocket as he made his way down. Clearing his throat he continued to regard the young boy, "Sorry, I must not have heard the door. Hope you weren't waiting to long."
Once at the base of the steps he reached out and flicked some of the wall switches to brighten up the place. The professor beamed a smile at Ethan, walking over and extending a hand in greeting, "Professor Elm at your service. What can I help you with today?" Now up close it was plain to see the light red marks matching that of sleeping on a wrinkled sleeve pressed on his cheek. Faint bags drooped under his eyes, but the purple tint could have also just been the unfortunate effect of wearing glasses for most of one's life.
After hearing the reason for Ethan's visit the professor gave a nod. "Well you've certainly come to the right place if you're interested in venturing out of New Bark alone. I'm sure you're aware of the dangers of the wild," he chimed, raising a hand to his chin for a moment afterward. "Hmmm, let's see..." He waved for Ethan to follow him before scurrying off to a deeper part of the lab and bringing the boy to a long table. Elm moved over to a large locked cabinet, rifling about his many pockets for a set of keys. "The lab was broken into the other day so some of my pokémon were stolen unfortunately..." he began as he found the keys and ducked down to open one of the drawers. "You may have noticed the lock on the front door was damaged as you came in. So I've had to be the night watch dog until the smith installs a new one." He sighed with disappointment, though it was quickly followed up by an ah hah!
"Here we go..." The Professor picked up a sturdy box and put it onto the table. He opened it up to reveal a tray set with three pokéballs. "But you're in luck! A good friend of mine in the research community donated a few of his rare pokémon as replacements for aspiring trainers such as yourself." Smiling, Elm withdrew the three pokéballs and called out the pokémon within to showcase them to the young lad. "Any one of these guys would be a great companion. I'll give you a few moments with them so you can decide which one you'd like to take with you on your journey through Johto."
With that the man shuffled away to one of the nearby desks and began searching through the scattered pages and items, pulling out a travel bag and stuffing it with some of the stuff he'd found. He returned after a while and offered the bag to Ethan. "I gift," he said simply. The bag had been left open a ways so Ethan could peer inside and see a nice bundle of starting items including pokéballs and medicines. "Also..." he started after the bag was accepted, digging a hand into another of his lab coat pockets and pulled out a red device, "This: a Pokédex. An incredibly handy device for anyone exploring and... well... I was wondering if you'd be willing to help me out as you travel about."
"You see, I'm collecting data on all pokémon species that I can but there's only so much I can get stuffed up here in the lab. Though, I couldn't possibly leave and do my own field research as that'd leave the lab unattended. The Pokédex I just handed you will automatically gather data as you encounter pokémon and then upload that data to me here where I can analyze it and continue my research. All that is required from you is the leg work," Elm explained with a hopeful tone.
"But of course I wouldn't expect you to do all this for me without something in return!" he continued, lifting a finger to the air that then swiped a crinkled page from one of his chest pockets. He unraveled it, smoothing it a little, and then turned it for Ethan to see. It looked to be a reward scheme of sorts. "As you collect data I'll give you special items as a reward for your hard work. Just seeing things in the wild will get you stuff from the left column, but I can get a lot more out of being able to interact and see pokémon so there's a separate list depending on the hard data I can get from things you capture." He handed the rough draft over to Ethan with a bright smile. "So what'd yah say? We can start you off with your new friend from the table."
The bulbasaur chirped cheerily in reply, having been standing at the edge of the table as she listened to the conversation. Elm reached out and pet the grass type lovingly on the head, glancing to the other two who had taken to stretching their legs with a game of tag around the table legs.

"Great! It seems to be working just fine. Now, just one last thing before you head off. I have a few trainers that have volunteered. And so to make sure I don't have too many repeat entries I'd prefer if you went out and captured as many as you could on your own instead of just sharing a pokémon's with someone." "Some sharing is expected of course, as it is interesting data to see how pokémon get around and relations between different trainers. But it's not my focus right now so I'll be keeping track here."
