Jin was born an average boy. There was nothing apparently special about him. The only part of him that stood out in a sea of his own friends was that Jinsei was blond like a yellow crayon. He has brown eyes that reflect a fair bit of emotion when he’s feeling happy, sad, angry, or remorseful; though most of the time when he’s seemingly thoughtful people say his eyes are quite lifeless. His fair skin was mostly unblemished save for a birthmark here or there on his body - hidden by clothes. Jinsei marks himself at five-feet-nine-inches(5’9”) or one-hundred-sixty-five centimeters(165cm) tall with an equally average weight of one-hundred-forty-nine pounds(149lb) or sixty-seven kilograms(67kg).
To combat the staggering levels of average, Jin employs visual characteristics such as piercings in his ear, a chain with a pendant given to him by his mother, and his father’s old jacket. Jinsei possesses an industrial scaffold piercing, two smaller lobe piercings through his right ear, while in his left ear he has three studs going from his lower to upper lobes, then a singular piercing in his left brow at the tail end, and finally, a singular tongue piercing in only a 12 gauge close to the tip of his tongue. Around the Sugimori boy’s neck is a pendant on a thick, red, synthetic rope gifted to him by his mother. There are a few golden beads that are fixed into different lengths of the rope but the pendant hangs front and center. The pendant itself is a large jewel of glittering red growing from a curled length of stone. This is probably the most expensive thing that Jinsei owns, despite the fact that he has several different pieces of technology at his fingertips, used to keep track of his life and Pokémon. Jin prefers to wear comfortable, dark clothes but will dress fancy if the occasion calls for it. His most unique piece of attire is a brown, leather, bomber jacket possessing a fur-collared hood, previously owned by his father during his years in the International Police Force. The secret to Jinsei isn’t his calm visual aesthetics, but rather his demeanor. Jinsei prefers that a person get to know him before they write the review on his story.

A whirlpool of seedy thoughts combine with a tsunami of headstrong emotions to create the character that is Jinsei Sugimori. Jinsei isn’t one to fly off the handle in rage but he will snipe you with wicked and provoking comments. He’s not prone to crazily fluctuating whims of fancy to do this and that, instead he’d rather relax and take things easy. Jinsei puts himself before most things and that makes him plenty selfish but when it’s necessary, when the situation calls for someone to stand up defend the lesser, help the poor, safeguard the innocent from the wicked, Jinsei will be there. His idealistic view of the world is that if one should have Pokémon then they should use those Pokémon for good and to help others. Being a trainer, trying to become the best, feels like a hollow goal to him, and so, while he has agreed to go on this adventure later in the course of his life, Jinsei will endeavor to instruct his Pokémon on the ways of dispensing justice where it is necessary. To that end, Jinsei needs to build up his strength as a trainer if some day he’s going to take that sense of justice to become a Ranger or an IPF officer.
Jinsei’s interests are fairly general and not uncommon to most boys, video games, girls, and music, he does have other special interests. The Sugimori boy likes poetry, he likes art, and he finds great pleasure in making his own. Ever since he was small, Jin liked to draw. Over time his skills flourished into a talent and proclivity for the artform. As he was growing up Jinsei used his talent and skill to win himself an amateur’s award in his year at school. He carried on using and developing his skill to drawing characters of adventures: heroes of the past, the hopeful visions of the future, and moments in the present. As Jinsei adventures he plans to record every wonderful moment in his sketchbook. Jin’s hope is that his faith in his friends to show him the goodness in the world and he can preserve it for the future and be reminded what his faith had done for him.

Jinsei Sugimori was born in Lumiose City to a Pokémon Ranger Kasumi Gosumaru and a retired IPF sargeant, Masuko Sugimori, some time during the summer months of the year, late at night. Kasumi and Masuko met early on in Kasumi’s career as she first became a ranger. Masuko was Kasumi’s contact in the organization for the region she frequently patrolled. Masuko was often called out to assist Kasumi during arrests or to assert an arrest. With Kasumi’s Pancham and Masuko’s Gloom, the two made a spectacular pair. Gloom would control the battlefield with his spores while Pancham took out stragglers. They would then mop up the culprits with one neat constrict and put them in cuffs until backup arrived. This unique synergy that Kas and Mas had together spurred some intense chemistry on and off the battlefield. Their desire for one another was only superseded by their intense devotion to justice. One would not date the other while they belonged to the same noble cause.
Masuko struggled the hardest with his emotions. He cared deeply for Kasumi. Mas wished more than anything to be with Kas, but his heart also pounded in his chest for stopping crime and inequality in the world. Also, it wasn’t entirely conducive to be dating a co-worker considering they were both a part of the same organization to protecting the world through their friendships with their Pokémon.
Things only became worse as their feelings for one another grew. Three years into their blossoming friendship and secret adoration for one another did something finally snap. During a raid on a Team Flare hideout Masuko’s Gloom had been knocked out during a battle with three other opponents. Though they didn’t seem to care about following traditional rules set out by the law it sure didn’t help them to defeat Kasumi’s Pancham as she Pounded and Body Slammed her way to victory, defeating the Team Flare henchmen. In the fray of battle Masuko himself had taken a fair bit of damage as he tried to protect his Gloom from the extra cruelty at the hands of Team Flare. He was rushed into hospital and cared for there as they treated his wounds.
Kasumi never left his side while he recovered. She cared for his every whim and in that time they grew much closer than before and even shared their first kiss then. That kiss was the ultimate nail in the coffin of Masuko’s career. Somehow, Masuko’s bosses learned of an “apparent” affair that Mas was having with Kasumi. Masuko tried to explain that it was only a kiss but as far as his bosses were concerned Masuko had crossed the line. They gave him the option of leaving under resignation or be terminated publicly. In reality Masuko’s bosses were corrupt and harbored a coveted affection for Kasumi and were maneuvering an obstacle out of the way so that Kasumi remained available and single. Masuko took the resignation to preserve his dignity but was unaware as to the greater machinations going on around him.
Kasumi, however, was not so blind. She looked into Masuko’s resignation. She was displeased with the obvious pretense surrounding Masuko’s resignation and pushed harder. Masuko’s former bosses learned of her investigation and tried to cover it up but Kasumi’s sense of justice was so highly-tuned that she just could not be deceived by their last-minute distractions. She honed in on one man, Gosetsu Tomojiro, the Regional Managing Officer, and pressed him for answers. With a bit of pressure she uncovered from Tomojiro that he and the other administrators had forced Masuko to retire. Kasumi, filled with anger, forced Tomojiro to confess his crimes publicly and oust the other admins for their gross abuse of power. When he refused she promised from then on that she would find a way to make him pay for what he’d done. Thankfully, the silver lining to this situation was that finally Masuko and Kasumi could pursue their love without the interruption of their career. This gave rise to a deep and personal love which produced a sweet little boy who loved playing with his father and his father’s Gloom, and learning to love his mother who was only rarely home. Masuko did his best to instill his children with a sense of goodness and love that he and Kasumi both shared.

Prologue - A Blank Slate
Jin grew up in a rather dull life. The mysterious past of his father and mother remained elusive to him his entire life, so far. Most of his formative years were spent much like anyone else’s. Jinsei went to school, he did homework, he played pull the Apom’s tail, kicked over trash cans, drew on the walls at home, and basically did everything a growing boy should do. Jinsei didn’t feel strongly toward Pokémon. His only exposure to them was what he knew in his everyday life. He saw the relationship between most Pokémon and trainer as nothing more than something cruel. The Pokémon did the bidding of the trainer and then they were forced into Pokéballs after their duties were complete. It all seemed very cruel to him.
When Jinsei was asked if he wanted to join the other children of his age in becoming a Pokémon Trainer and going on an adventure. With a defiant face, Jin rejected the opportunity. He decidedly took on a higher education, trying to focus on some of his goals. He wanted to be like his father and mother, servants of justice. He hoped that he wouldn’t need a Pokémon to work in the IPF, but, sadly, that was not the case. A few years later he learned of a mandatory Pokémon policy that requires all members of the IPF as a safety precaution so that if they were attacked their Pokémon could help defend them.
Chapter One - The First Mark
Enter, a younger friend: Akira Masuda. Akira was only a year younger than Jin but they lived much different lives. While Akira was crazy for Pokémon and their complex lore, Jin obviously did not. This did not stagnate their friendship however, Akira always respected Jin’s position but felt that he was being too closed-minded, that there was always something more between a Pokémon and its trainer. It took six years for Jin to open up to this thought. Ever since he watched Akira leave with his very first Pokémon, Jin seemed to take notice. He didn’t believe his friend could force his Pokémon to do things they didn’t want to do, Akira didn’t seem the type of person. However, Akira was persistent but patient with Jinsei and gave the Sugimori boy as much time as he needed.
As Jinsei learned the truth to the requirements of being an IPF officer he couldn’t help but find himself conflicted with his will to help people and Pokémon with the disgust of probably playing master to a slave. Akira’s answer was to show him the truth, to opening up a story that Jinsei had never even read: the tale of a Trainer and his beloved Pokémon. Jinsei took a moment to appreciate the touching irony of his friend’s words. Jinsei hated that people took one look at him and decided he was a delinquent by the way he dressed rather than learn the truth about what kind of person he was through meeting him. And here he was, having signed off on a part of life he’d never even experienced. Would becoming a Pokémon Trainer make him a hypocrite? Would it invalidate all the stances he’d previously taken, simply by trying? It took a while for Jinsei to come around but he bravely set a foot forward and registered with a brand new Pokédex to boldly take on this new chapter in his life.

Stop injustice should he be there to witness it.
