Phoenix was bored.
Unsurprising.
He hadn't stepped foot outside of his house since he and his mother moved to New Bark Town a few weeks before. They had just finished settling down in the house and, while part of him wanted to go out, explore, have fun, he pushed those feelings deep down inside of him. His mom was always at work now, leaving him home alone with his former battle partner, Blaze the Arcanine, and Xander, the excitable, hyper, utterly unbearable Charmander. He wanted nothing more than peace and quiet, which Blaze gave him, but Xander just wouldn't let him have that solace. What irked him the most was how affectionate he was. There was never a day that went by where Xander wouldn't cuddle in his lap or force Phoenix to stroke his back. Although he was positively annoying, Phoenix couldn't deny he was cute. Phoenix was watching a news story from the Unova region, his hometown. It looks like someone had taken down Iris, the champion, a dragon master. Huh.
At the sight of the newscast, Phoenix chanced a glance out the window. It was pretty misty out, making the lake seem to glitter and sparkle. Phoenix sat for a second and marveled at the ethereal sight, suddenly Xander face-planted on the window. The glass rattled at the sudden impact, and Blaze growled a low warning at Xander. the clumsy Charmander ran up to Phoenix, blubbering, with a bump forming on its head. Phoenix sighed, smirked a little, and ruffled Xander's short fur a little. He glanced back outside again. It was really beautiful... After deliberating for a bit, Phoenix sighed, turned off the TV, scooped up Xander, and opened the front door.
The air held a slight chill as he made his way outside. Of course, the cold didn't bother him; it never did. He set Xander down and made for Route 29, right outside New Bark town, his excited Charmander right behind him. Once they'd made it to their destination, Phoenix sat on a ledge and watched Xander frolic around as he admired and enjoyed the misty morning air.

New Bark Town was surprisingly active this morning, although since Phoenix was up and out just around the time where people left for work and school, it wasn't so strange. No one stopped him, but he earned a few odd glances, a little girl stared in childish wonder as her father pulled her along, and she turned as much around as possible to see him for as long as possible. The town hadn't gotten used to Phoenix's different look yet, they hadn't been around for long after all, and he hadn't been seen outside often. The mist swirled around the trees of the route, it was chilly and the humidity was high, a warning of the colder times which were approaching. Neither Phoenix nor Xander seemed bothered by it at all, but some pokemon found it harder than others. A sentret had been sitting on a fallen tree and tried to comb and dry its wet fur, it shivered in the cold and wrapped its tail around it. A little flash of light caught its attention and when it happened again, it rose high on its tail to see, what normally was a great scouting method didn't help it at all today. It jumped down and raced through the grass until it almost ran straight into Xander, it froze for a moment and then tilted its head. The charmander looked nice and content, but he also ran around and moved a lot, and seemed to be having fun. The normal type sent the fire type a hopeful smile and waved a bit, then jumped forward and gave him a light pat on his arm before darting away a bit again, looking over its shoulder to see if he followed. If he accepted the invitation to play. A sentret [Lv 4] invites Xander to play! Weather will be MistShiny: pOvrSak41-42(ooc: we can write the play as a play-fight, a tag happening just a tad too hard, or a claw a bit too far out on the paw, if you want, or you can go another route and we can see what happens ^^ ) 1-42

Phoenix, although sitting back moments before, had now sat up and leaned forward, confounded at the sight of a brand-new Pokémon. He'd never seen it before. He whipped out his pokedex and scanned the playful Sentret. The information claimed it was a normal type, wary of all that wasn't its kind. Well. This Sentret was contradicting everything that the pokedex had said about it. It wagged its tail tauntingly as it bounded away before glancing back, as if beckoning Xander to follow. Xander stopped in its tracks as soon as the sentret tapped him. He cried in excitement, hopped twice, and dashed after the Sentret. They were faster than Phoenix thought, and before he knew it, they'd disappeared behind a cluster of foliage.
He followed, and it revealed a ledge. After climbing over it, he saw the 2 Pokémon racing for another patch of trees. Phoenix ran after them. He tried his hardest to keep up, but they were just too fast. He climbed another ledge they'd raced over and found them tussling in a field, Xander having caught up to the Sentret. They struggled for a moment, then got up. The Sentret cried in excitement as they circled each other. Xander snorted a burst of flame from his mouth, revved up, and charged at the Sentret as it ran full speed at him as well. Phoenix could tell they were only playing, so he stayed back and watched as they went in for blows. As Xander was running, however, he tripped, falling flat on his face as barreled toward the Sentret on the slick, early morning grass. The Sentret saw a collision was about to occur, so it changed course and decided a head on clash like this would likely result in injuries for the both of them. It ducked out of the way and tried to clear a path in time as Xander slid ever closer with increasing speed.

The pair were soon chasing each other around. Chilly mists were making the ground slicker and no doubt soon there would be a fine coat of frost on the grass which would make for poor traction. But it was fantastic for play! The sentret and charmander were soon engaged in an odd little tag session, where Xander snorted out some flames, slipped and barreled into the sentret by accident. Hot sparks from his fire breath and tail singed the sentret's fur and the little mammal had to quickly hop up to avoid getting too scorched! But it didn't seem to take the hit as aggression, rather, after bounding away a few steps to put some distance between them, it hopped up onto its tail and bounced a bit. Its arms waved in encouragement for Xander to keep following! Then it rolled up tight into a ball...and tumbled down a little hill into some thicker grasses. Come! Catch it if you can, Charmander! ooc// I am interpreting this as charmander using 'ember' for their move since it's unclear if he is using ember or scratch. Sometimes folks will call out the move used in ooc notes, especially in 'play' battles, where their pokemon aren't really fighting, but moves have to be chosen to progress the battle forward! If you want sentret to join you, make sure to throw a ball!

Xander's heart was pumping. He'd never experienced such a rush before. After he collected himself, he whirled around, looking for the silly little Sentret to keep playing. He heart a chirp from his left, turned and saw the Sentret pack itself into a ball and rolled down the hill with a speed he hadn't yet see from it. He snorted smoke from his nose and gave chase. Phoenix never played with him like this before. He could get used to days like this! He was about to slide down the hill, but stopped. He turned timidly, eyeing Phoenix, than slowly motioned for him to come along. Phoenix shook his head, chuckled to himself, and followed along with Xander tugging him. Phoenix followed along with haste as Xander rushed ahead, eager to find where the Sentret was hiding, though it was difficult in the tall grass and misty weather. He rummaged around for a few seconds before seeing some rustling in the grass to his right. He heard some chittering, then out popped the Sentret! He ran around Xander for a few seconds before pouncing on Xander from an odd angle, sending both of them tumbling into some grass a ways away. They grappled in the grass for a bit, before tiny bursts of flame blasted from the grass. They were extinguished in the misty air within seconds, but the damage was already done. The grass was completely singed, sending a family of Rattata scrambling for cover as the 2 pokemon wrangled. All the flame missed the Sentret though, lucky for him.
Minutes went by. Not long after Xander burnt the grass though, Xander and the Sentret tired out at the same time. Phoenix stood up when he saw they were done, and scooped up Xander, and began to leave. After a while of walking, he heard a rustle in some nearby grass. He turned around and found himself face to face with the Sentret Xander was just playing with. It pointed at Xander, then at a pokeball, and chirped. Phoenix was confused, and the Sentret grew more impatient with each passing moment. Finally, the Sentret huffed, rummaged through Phoenix's bag, and found a pokeball. It tapped the button without warning, and the Sentret was quickly sucked inside. Phoenix sat, in utter disbelief as the pokeball warbled slightly. Did the Sentret just enter his Pokeball? Willingly? he'd never seen anything like this happen before, but it didn't matter. All he wanted in the moment was the Sentret to stay in the rattling pokeball.

The fires were a bit scary to the sentret, but Xander was such wonderful playmate that the sentret looked could see past that and wanted to continue to play! Right up until they both got exhausted from running around, it really had gotten warm now, so it had worked playing the tag and play wrestling with its new friend. The sentret grinned to the charmander, but then Phoenix came close and the sentret scrambled away, calling a warning to its new friend. From its hiding place it watched as Xander let himself get scooped up and carried away, it more looked like how a child got carried around by its parents. Could those humans really be like parents for pokemon? Now it was standing still the cold began to seep through its fur again and it shivered in anticipation. It made a quick decision and bounded after Zander and Phoenix, they looked warm and cozy, and it had been so fun being with it's new friend, surely staying with them would be nice? Phoenix was rather slow in the uptake of what the sentret tried to tell him, at least that was how the normal type saw it. It wasn't like a human had anything to say about what the pokemon wanted to stay with his other pokemon or not, right? It had seen trainers with pokemon before, and it had seen some of its kin get captured, it knew what this was about and what it had to do to stay with Xander so they could continue to be friends and play, and it could stay warm and hopefully get fed too. Out with all those useless junk in the back while it looked for that important pokeball, a potion flew through the air and luckily just missed a rock as it landed, A sandwich followed, and a blue greatball which was rather lucky sentret didn't know worked as well, and then finally the map got a trip into the air as well, folding out and floating gently towards the wet ground. "Sentret"" The normalt type exclaimed cheerfully when it finally spotted what it was looking for: it pulled out the pokeball and much to Phoenix surprise it disappeared inside and got caught without any struggle. This really was a pokemon who knew what it wanted, and would go far to make things happen. Gotcha! Xander grows +2 level to [Lv 7]! SentretName: [Scruffy] Gender: [Male] Level: 4 OT: Phoenix Silvius Attacks: Scratch, Defense Curl Ability: Keen Eye Nature/Personality: Quirky, Scruffy isn't like other Sentret. He really likes to have fun, is less wary of other people and pokemon, and has a bit of a wild side to him. Surely he will be a reliable asset to Phoenix and Xander on their journey.

"Hey you! I just saw you catch that sentret!"
A voice called out from a patch of grass. A young kid, barely old enough to apply for a trainer card, pushed through the browning weeds where he'd been lurking. There was a boyish smirk on his face, and his bright orange attire was a little rumpled from roaming around outside all day. Bandaids and bruises mottled his knees, and his shoes were caked in slush and mud. The vigor of youth was likely why he wasn't freezing out here in those shorts—never slowing down long enough to get cold.
He propped his hands on his hips and flashed gap-toothed smile.
"And now our eyes have met. You know what that means right? When two trainers meet eyes, we totally have to battle!" He pointed at Phoenix, "So there's no backing out of this! I know you have a pokemon and it's not one of those boring bugs either. Maybe you'll actually give me and my totally top percentage rattata a real challenge! I caught him earlier this week and he's super tough." He then threw a ball to reveal said rattata. "I choose you, Ratty! But he careful. The ground's all slippery so you'll be moving a little faster than you're used to!"
Youngster Joey notices you catching a pokemon. He challenges you with his top precent [LV 5] Rattata!
Weather is SLIPPERY.
Who will you send out first?
OOC// Hey! A couple of helpful tips for you here! Just so you know, if you want to move on from an area, just add an [F] to your title and post in the next board. If you want to update a pokemon's information in your adventure, do as you have done, BUT, know that you also need to RP a response to the moderated post. Otherwise, we don't know if you are moving on or sticking around! What you write can give us stuff to work with to give you a better experience. And if you don't know what to do next, you can ask a mod to provide a plot hook or even suggestions from the job board! The job board might give you a trail to follow across multiple posts or even towns! They can range from catching a certain pokemon in an area to delivering cookies from Cherrygrove to Violet for a young man who wants to show his affections for his date. We're here to help.

Phoenix looked up, surprised to hear someone else's voice this deep into route 29. He swiveled his head, attempting to figure out where the voice originated from and turned to view the youngster staring at him, pokeball at the ready. Just his luck. He had barely just obtained Scruffy, and now some random kid wanted to fight? No. Phoenix wasn't having any of it. He glanced at the boy and his Rattata, then at Xander, who perked up from his tired stupor after hearing the word 'battle'. Phoenix's eyes narrowed at the Charmander, shooting a burst of flare at the ground beneath him, stomping on the scorched earth, than facing the Rattata with a smirk. Nope, he was done with this route.
"Yeah, not interested, sorry." Phoenix recalled Xander into his pokeball and made in the general direction of his house. Since he'd moved to New Bark Town, battle wasn't anywhere near on the top of his priorities.
"Wha- Hey! Get back here! Our eyes met, so we have to battle!" Joey wasn't going to take no for an answer. "Like I give a toss," Phoenix called over his shoulder as he strode back to his house. Suddenly, out of nowhere, Xander popped out of his pokeball, right in front of Phoenix. He chirped angrily at Phoenix. This only served to make him more irritated. "I don't care what you want. I'm not battling this kid. Now c'mon, we're going home." He kept walking, and Xander attempted to drag him back by his feet, but he was just dragged along with Phoenix. Suddenly, though, Phoenix stopped. He looked around slowly, then turned back to the youngster behind him. "Hey... You wouldn't happen to know the way back, would you?" Joey raised an eyebrow, amused. "You mean to tell me you're lost?" He chuckled. "Well, you're in luck. I happen to know the way to Cherrygrove city, which is closer to here than New Bark. But." "But?" "Yep, in order for me to tell you, you have to beat me in a pokemon battle!" Joey smirked, pleased with himself for thinking of such a clever trick. Phoenix stood, dumbfounded. "Seriously." "Yup!" "In order for you to tell me the way out of here, I have to fight you." "That's right!" Phoenix glared at the kid. Of course he was going to say that. "Okay, fine. I'll bite." He reached into his pouch and pulled out a pokeball. He threw it into the air, and out popped Xander, ready for battle. "Let's get this over with, Xander. Use Ember." Xander dashed toward The Rattata and fired a burst of hot flames from his mouth, aiming for the Rattata as it took a defensive stance.

That was not what Joey usually was like and he was rather surprised with his boldness towards the trainer in front of him. Yes of course he was a child and he loved to battle, but usually he wouldn't stand up to an adult trainer if they said no, nor really dare battle them. One thing was to demand your right against you friends in the schoolyard and their equally young pokemon, but out here? Especially since he actually didn't know the way as he claimed. He knew the way back to New Bark Town of course, but Cherrygrove? The claim had been a whim and probably because he thought Phoenix really wanted to go there, now he wanted to himself. "Yes! Alright Ratty, this is for Kent! Quick Attack!" He shouted excitedly, keeping himself up high in adrenaline to not think about the consequences of what he had just done. He wasn't a bad kid, just doing what he needed to do to help a friend. He knew his friend's dream about seeing the fully evolved forms of the butterfly pokemon he had, but he had heard some of the adults quietly talking about Kent not might ever go on a travel, and Joey couldn't accept that. He knew Kent wasn't so strong but that would just mean that he would need to be strong enough for two and then they could travel together! It was the thought which counted, right? "Go get it! We need to always be ready to protect Kent so he can travel!" Joey shouted an encouraging reminder to his pokemon who dashed of so fast it was hard to keep track of it. No defensive stances here, they had no time for that as they were on a mission! The Embers Xander breathed as he dashed towards the rat just singed the ground, no rat where were he had aimed just a moment ago. He got the air knocked out of him when Ratty slammed into his side and they both tumbled to the ground. "That's it Ratty! Soon they will all see how strong we're are, that you're the best rattata! And then we can take Kent out traveling!" Joey exclaimed as he danced around, only to deflate completely a moment later when Xander pushed himself up on his arms and showered Ratty in embers. Wild Encounter Weather: Chinook (slippery) [attr="class","qkt-bkgd"] [attr="class","qkt-wild-pkmn"] Ratty LV 5 HP 58% [11/19]

(ooc: yeah.. this is way too much controlling. Remember, you cannot control whatever the mod spawns/create, not what they say, not what they do, that being wild pokemon and NPCs. We are two writing this story, and here you have left us nothing to do, this is the same as if you played with another member and took control of their character while threading with them. If you do this again we're going to need to ask you to rewrite the parts which is not okay. I can see what you are trying to do, that you need Phoenix put in a corner to accept the challenge, but you could set it up to it, and tell us you need something like this, because otherwise he'd just leave. You can write things more loose, f.ex. here you could have written that he turned and "would be dismissive of any idea about a eye-contact rule", parts of the discussion with Xander would still be fine, and then a "realizing he didn't know the way home, and had a growing feeling the kid only would help him if he battled him". That would leave it open for a mod to jump to that and let the kid realize Phoenix was lost, and strike the deal with the battle for information. OR perhaps the mod then got a wild idea and decided they didn't want to go that route, but would let Team Rocket appear and force you to battle together against them to get rid of them, but that is not an option now. So please: hands off whatever the mod spawns and control ^^ )

Phoenix looked on at the battle in front of him. Xander was giving it his all, and it clearly showed. He spat embers with such ferocity, they could've been mistaken for the flamethrower move. The Rattata crashed into Xander, knocking the wind out of him and sending them both sprawling to the floor. Phoenix winced at this, imagining the pain Xander had just experienced. But this was no time for pity. He'd already accepted the challenge, and to his knowledge, the youngster was going to show him the way to Cherrygrove if he won. To be honest, he didn't really want to leave the forest that much yet. Although he didn't care for battling, he still loved Pokémon, no matter the type. Xander and the Rattata both stood up once more, and Xander snarled menacingly and stomped his foot. Xander enjoyed the rush of battle immensely, an attribute Phoenix would've shared with him maybe a few years before. But for now, Phoenix was only doing this because in his eyes, he had to.
As the battle raged on, Phoenix grew more focused, more in tune with the events, transpiring. Suddenly, he felt something. Something deep in his gut, something he'd suppressed for years. It was trying to come to the surface, to take a gasp of air; of life it hadn't felt in forever. Phoenix felt a smile curling at the corners of his lips, a rush of adrenaline beginning to come on. What was this feeling...?
Phoenix shook his head and re-focused on the battle. Something strange had taken hold for a moment there. It was a feeling Phoenix was almost sure he'd long forgotten. One he was nearly positive he'd left in Unova, with is younger, more child-like self. Could it be...? No. Phoenix pushed the thought from his mind. Impossible. There's no way. 'Stay in the moment. Think of Xander. Tell him what you want him to do.' Phoenix looked over to Xander, who looked at him expectantly. "Xander, Ember again! Don't miss!" he shouted.
(sorry, I put too much in my last post. I'll try not to be as controlling going forward.)

Jeoy's face scrunched up thoughtfully when Xander fought back and after the first attack got back up on his feet and looked expectantly back at his trainer. He looked too well and unscratched to the kids liking, not that he wanted the orange pokemon to be hurt, of course not! But he knew they should look tired, and when he 'battled' with his friends the pokemon looked tired and even often went napping after a few exchange, and it was usually what decided the result of the 'battle'. "We need to hit harder," he mumbled to himself. The kid's hesitation showed his inexperience, while he thought Phoenix and Xander had plenty of time and Ratty freaked out when another barrage of embers rained down over it, and this time several of them burned through its fur and left sore patches. "Oh no! Are you alright Ratty? Keep your distance and Tail Whip, we'll turn this around!" Joey called out frantically, waving his arms around like a madman. Ratty winced but managed to grin reassuringly to its trainer, before it waved cutely to Xander with its tail. See? It was small and nothing to be afraid of, he could relax and not be too alert around it. "How did you get lost here?" Joey suddenly bursted out, "I mean, this is route 29 and not Ilex Forest." He looked curiously at the older trainer, he had always found it easy to find his way around this close to New Bark, but he of course had also grown up here and spent countless hours playing among the trees. "Are you going to catch a rattata too? You won't get one as good as mine though," he added with a grin, childlessly living so much in the moment he had momentarily forgotten his worry for his rat. It had gestured to him it was alright after all, and of course it was as it was the best there ever was. Phoenix felt a wave of satisfaction at the burning of the Rattata. Now, damage would be dealt steadily until the Rattata finally fainted from exhaustion. He'd felt like he won... But then he remembered something from his trainer studies in Unova. According to one of the adventuring guidelines books he'd read, some Rattata can have a special ability people called Guts. According to said book, guts increases the damage output of the pokemon if they're suffering. The book further went on to explain, 'Our studies have shown us that the damage increase only takes place when a pokemon is paralyzed, poisoned, or burned. This ability is common in Normal and/or fighting types that are known to have competitive spirits.' Xander burned the Rattata.
Crap.
Damage would be done each turn, but Xander's defense was dropped, AND the Rattata's guts ability was activated. Phoenix had a feeling that if Xander didn't knock out Ratty next turn, it would be trouble for them, and as far as he knew, the Youngster wasn't going to tell them the way out until they beat him. Given the circumstances, this particular burn was maybe the worst possibility. He knew he'd just have to tough it out. He knew a way to deal the most damage possible was to aim for the burned area. So he called out to Xander: "Xander, use scratch on the burn!" He turned back, looked Phoenix in the eyes, then charged at the Rattata, claws at the ready.

"This is your big chance to turn this around, Ratty! For Kent, use quick attack before that charmander can hit you!" Joey called out. Suffering from a burn, the gutsy rat drew in a deep breath. He only had one chance to knock out this charmander. While the odds were slim, he could win this. He could overcome the odds and defeat this stronger opponent. All he needed to do was hit this lizard where it hurt most! <Take this!> Ratty called out, dashing forward too fast to see. In a blink, he was on top of the charmander, slamming into him with a ferocity that was startling. It nearly knocked the lizard out cold, right then and there! The power of guts, eh? In the same way that people had to be wary of pokemon with abilities that were 'boosted in a pinch', statusing guts pokemon, even by accident, was quite the risky gamble. "Yeah! Go Ratty! You show'em!" Joey cheered. However, that one blow was not enough to knock the lizard out. Claws came down and sliced into the burn on the rat's side. Ratty went shock sill, trembling from the suddenness...before collapsing. "Wha...oh no. Ratty!" He hurried over and picked up the injured rat. "You did good, buddy. We'll get even stronger, so we can protect people like we want, okay?" His promise to help the other trainer was momentarily forgotten as he fussed over his fainted pokemon.

Phoenix sighed relief at the victory of the battle. He'd won, and the Youngster would help him get to Cherrygrove... or so he thought. As he youngster scrambled to heal his wounded Rattata, Phoenix glanced at Xander, panting from the ferocious impact of the rat's quick attack. He'd taken some heavy damage, too. Phoenix gently picked up Xander and took him to a curb nearby, where he treated him with a potion. Suddenly, a bitter chill shook the area, and a great gale of frosty wind fell over the forest. This, of course, didn't affect Phoenix, even more so because he was cradling Xander in his lap. Scruffy sped over and nuzzled Phoenix, then looked over to Xander, who was now feeling much better thanks to the potion. Scruffy suddenly shivered, gazing to the sky with a look of wonder through chattering teeth. Phoenix glanced upward as well, and almost gasped at the sight. Fluffy snowflakes began falling to the ground in almost a hypnotic fashion, swaying to and fro, dancing on the wind. The puffy cotton balls drifted to the ground gently, rocking around until they at last made their stop to the ground. Xander immediately shot up and chiirped with excitement. Phoenix looked on in awe. He'd seen snow before, but never in such numbers. The white flakes continued to fall, coating the ground in an even white color. A snowflake landed on Xander's nose, but melted instantly because of his high body temperature. Scruffy suddenly snuck up on Xander and pushed him into a mound of white he'd made a little bit ago. Neither Xander nor Phoenix noticed his undertaking because they were captivated by the flurry. Xander burst out and began to chase Scruffy, squealing the whole time. Phoenix chuckled at the sight, but then set his eyes on the sky once more. After a few minutes of Phoenix sitting and soaking in the sight, he turned to the youngster, who was likewise enjoying the snow, although he wore a coat now. "So," he began. "Where's Cherrygrove? Didn't you say you'd show me the way?"
