Most of the time, I use a cheat code and change the starter to Pikachu.

You know, I know when I first started the older games my very first time, I went with Charmander. However, since then I went with Squirtle. Silver / Gold came around, and I moved to Cyndaquil. Ruby / Saphire rolled around and I switched frequently between Treeko and Mudkip.
So why?
I get pretty into this game. I see most early Gen fire Pokemon as sort of wastes. I mean, let's look at Charizard, Arcainine, and Flareon. They all have exceptional Attack ratings... But they're fire Pokemon.
This means you either get powerful physical attacks OR STAB'ed fire. They're Spec. Attack is usually about average. It feels like they're just not reaching the potential that others are, like lightning Pokemon.
Venusaur is alright. I sometimes enjoy Toxidraining people to death. (Toxic -> Leech Seed -> Protect -> Giga Drain -> Protect etc. Or in the case of older generations, Toxic -> Leech Seed -> Double Team -> Mega Drain)
But it comes down to not enjoying the weaknesses of poison with little benefits. And he's not offensively what Blastoise is. Maybe I'm a little biased there. Oh well. ^^;;
Now, Typhlosion is a bit better in this category. But the reason I chose him in those versions were 2 fold.
Feraligatr sucks. It's plagued with the same problem, high attack and mediocre Spec. attack. Meganium is too defensive for me.
Secondly, strong fire pokemon are hard to come by who aren't troubled by very low defense. Look at Houndoom. An otherwise exceptional pokemon, but it has very low defense and several physical weaknesses. Then we have other new ones like Macargo (double weakness to water and ground? WTF? DO NOT WANT).
Sceptile rocks with great speed and Spec. Attack. That speed on a grass pokemon is something I just can't pass up. And to top it off, he's not cursed with that damn poison type as well! Blaziken and Swampert share a physical and special type - I don't like mixing up my attacks and such. It's really hard to make a strong pokemon with EV's in both Spec. Attack and Attack. I know mixed sweepers can be awesome every now and then but... BAH.
Sure, Blaziken can make one hell of a fighting pokemon, but it's basically a mediocre fighting pokemon with fire weaknesses too. Why would I want that when I can take a Machamp?
I did, however, take Mudkip every now and then. Simply cause I like 'em. But it was not my first choice.
I know this all seems kinda harsh. It's just the way I've developed into this game at this point. Which brings me to the fact that during an RP, I would not let this kind of thing affect me. I actually RP, not worry about what's powerful and not (unless that's my character I suppose).
Moving on to this site. I chose Squirtle because it is what my character would innately choose.

in red blue and yellow i mosty chose bulbasaur because he was one of my favorites. Here im probably gonna choose squirtle an then get another grass type. in johto i mixed it up everytime i started a new game because i liked all the starters. in hoenn i almost always started with mudkip. In sinnoh i also started with piplup. the only reason empoleon kinda grinded my gears was that he took normal damage from fire types because of his steel dual typing. that shudnt happen ever...imo

I've always used Charmander - they just seem to be more effective and useful later on. =]

I started with Bulbasaur as I'm Camtoniac's ***** and she told me if we had any hope of doing a group RP (which we are! ^^) it would be weird if we both had Charmanders and I prefer Bulbasaur to Squirtle.

I picked Charmander. Why? >_> <_<; Charmander rocks. Charmander later on can fly so you don't have to go get a flying pokemon if you don't want to. You could just have more choices as to which type of pokemon you want in your party. Besides fire types are cool.

I started with bulbsaur cause no one picks him x.x
In the games I picked, Charmander (Red), Squirtle(Blue), Cyndaquil(Gold), Chikorita(Crystal), Mudkips(Saphire), Piplup (Platinum). x.x I picked a lot of waters.

During my younger days, I was more prone to choosing water types since they out of all the three, seemed the most stable defensively. Lately though I've been abandoning that and going with fire types instead to try a better offensive strategy.
I'm currently using Quilava in Heartgold, which is alright, but nothing compared to my Chimchar in Platinum since speed + good offensive = win in my category.
As for this site, I was going to choose a stable Squirtle, but opted for Faust (my charmander) instead. Why? I have no idea. The fiery personality seemed to contrast nicely to Hale's cool demeanor.

For me, it was between Bulbasaur and Squirtle. Both are among my favorites, particularly in their respective type sets, but the determining factor for me is that, based on what my character knows about Pokemon, the double-type of the Bulbasaur line was a huge factor over a monotype Pokemon like Squirtle and its evolutions. In addition, a big thing for him was the strategies of each Pokemon; he sees Blastoise as too defensive for him, and Venusaur's mix of offensive capability (Sludge Bomb, Solar Beam, etc) combined with status moves (Sleep Powder, Leech Seed) is more his style.

I was going to go with Charmander cause that's what I normally do in the Gen I games. I like Charmander just a tiny bit more than the other two but I do love them all.
But then I sat down and really considered what my character would have. Squirtle was just so much a better fit that I had to go with the turtle. Go go Turtle Power!
