Clavis strolled down the road, enjoying the warm air. Professor Oak, the man his Aunt Murray described to be the one to give her Blastoise, had not been at the Pokemon lab. As it turned out, Professor Elm had been the one inside. The odd man, not that Clavis could judge, had offered him three Kanto starters. Clavis knew that many of his family had expected him to pick a fire-type, and even he had to acknowledge that it would have been very beneficial if he had. However, he always knew that before he could pick any Pokemon as a partner, he had to look into its eyes. The Pokemon could do as it liked to judge him as a person and trainer. Bulbasaur had, in the end, been chosen and now trailed behind him. In a moment of carelessness, he named the poor creature Gaia. He had already silently apologized to Gaia a few times, although it didn't seem to mind its name. Clavis, as a gift, had given it a long red scarf and tied it around its bud. But even through the embarrassment of choosing such a basic name for a grass-type, he continued to smile his always empty smile, and he always would.

Spring had arrived! The ground under the trees were white as snow as the first flowers of the year covered it with their pretty heads. In the lack of combees and beedrills to pollinate, wurmple had taken over and was gorging themselves in the sweet nectar. The flowers was small but there were plenty of them around. There would be many beautiflys and dustoxs later this year. The leaves were beginning to open up on the branches and dotted the trees with greens, Clavis couldn't have chosen a better time to start his journey. The amount of wild pokemon was abundant and the weather was nice, what else could a trainer wish for? While most pokemon were clever enough to wait until later in the spring, a few pidgey pairs had already nested and one pair had even managed to bring a single chick through the still occasional cold nights and it had just become ready to leave the nest. It had grown used to be the only child and getting all the attention, so it had been strange for it to suddenly get ignored as its parents had started taking care of a new clutch, apparently wanting to get as big family as possible. The young pidgey was full of confidence, which only grew as it easily chased off a few wurmples it ran into, and it felt like it was invincible! It was sitting in a tree and watched curiously as a strange two-legged creature and a living plant walked by, but of course, the wurmples had looked rather strange too, back when it saw them first. It's eyes gleamed when it spotted the amazing red scarf, and knowing it could do whatever it wanted, it dived as it chirped happily and dug its claws into the red cloth. Flapping hard it managed to pull it over one side of the bulb and it was off Gaia, but way too heavy for the small bird to carry, so instead it landed right beside them and strutted around with and end of the scarf in its beak, showing off its great treasure. It was certainly not going to give it back. A Pidgey [Lv 2] with the egg move Air Cutter struts around with the scarf! It's holding a Pecha Berry! Clavis stared down at the Pidgey, his smile never wavering. Glancing at Gaia, who looked slightly irritated, he took a step forward toward the wild Pokemon. The Pidgey reminded him greatly of his hotheaded, five-year-old sister. Considering his options for a moment, he asked, “Would you be okay with fighting today, Gaia?” The Bulbasaur nodded without hesitation. Clavis then turned his gaze back to the young Pidgey, “Try not to knock him out, Gaia. I am going to try and catch him.” His little sister might leave him alone for once if brought a Pidgey from Johto. With a smile, he whispered to his Pokemon, “Alright, use Vinewhip, would you?”

The small brown bird was excited to have such a brilliant red scarf all to itself. It shook its head and tried its best to toss the scarf around its neck. The end of the scarf would thump against Pidgey’s side or only get halfway on its back each time it tried to toss it, though. No matter how hard little Pidgey tried, it couldn’t quite get the end of the scarf to fall around its neck and over the other side of its body like it wanted. “All the other birds will be jealous of me!” It chirped proudly at its newly pilfered item. When Gaia began whipping it with his long vines out of nowhere, the bird screeched in pain. It flapped its small wings at its sides and hopped across the ground. That really hurt! Pain ached from the spot on its back and sides where the vines had hit and felt as though tiny needles were stabbing it all over, though it would only cause minor bruises to appear where Gaia struck it. “Why’d you do that? That’s mean!” It screamed at Gaia. This strange Pokemon definitely had to be taught a lesson! Immediately, Pidgey flapped its wings and soared up high in the air above Gaia. As it circled overhead and used the gentle breezes that rustled the long branches on the nearby trees to let it glide, it studied Gaia on the ground below. Once Pidgey found the perfect opening, it tucked its wings at its side and dived out of the skies above after Gaia. Pidgey would come crashing into Gaia’s side, slamming its full weight against the large dinosaur-like plant. “Take that, you big meanie!” Pidgey huffed proudly. Clavis studied the flying Pokemon with strange eyes. He murmured to himself, clearly trying to think quickly. As an idea came to him, he shouted confidently, “Pidgey is close to the ground, now would be a good time to use Tackle!” Flying Pokemon were a problem to battle against, even a novice like Clavis understood that. VineWhip could reach the air, but only so far. While Gaia was quicker than they looked, he doubted they could use it effectively so close to the ground. Growl, the only other move, lowered the opponent's defense, but it was not very useful in this circumstance. This battle might take a minute or so, but that was no problem to him. He was patient and he could already tell that Gaia was too. Although, if he wanted to give this Pokemon to Dolores, he presumed he had better train it first. No Pokemon wanted to get on that little girl’s bad side. Slightly, but surely, Clavis shivered at the thought and dipped his lower face into his scarf.

The young pidgey completely ignored the human, it was battling Gaia and of course she was the culprit of all of this, she was the one who needed to be taught a lesson and see how great it was. "See? You don't mess with me!" It called confidently to Gaia and landed on the red scarf again, its eyes tingled at the colorful cloth and it began to peck at it in and attempt to pick it up and fly away with it. It just proved to be very hard when it was stuck under its own feet and it hadn't figured out it needed to move, the scarf was in risk of getting damaged if the bird was allowed to continue. Gaia wasn't, although her reasons to stop the bird mauling the scarf wasn't for the scarfs sake but because she was ordered to. Of course that might have been Clavis reasons but he didn't say that out loud. Gaia rammed into the bird from the side and sent it rolling over the ground. Success! The scarf was now hers to take again, if she wanted. Tackle was also clearly much more powerful against a flying type than a grass type attack as vine whip, there was always different ways you could lure a bird down if you needed it close to the ground. You could for example shout insults at it, claiming it was a coward to keep its distance, or you could make sure you had some cover above you which forced the bird closer to the ground. A lot of trainers also found ways for using vine whips to try catch and hold, only the imagination set the boundries. Pidgey was anything but imaginative and now it was also angry that Gaia hadn't acknowledged its superiority. It came running over chirping loudly, "that's mine! Get away from it, I found it first!" It tried to slap the grass dinosaur away with a wing but missed, what didn't miss was the blue energy which gathered on the edge of its wing and flew through the air and slammed into the side of Gaia. The pidgey's beak fell open and it slowly look at one of its wings in wonder. "What was that?" It whispered. Clavis’ expression never faltered and he softly questioned Gaia, “If you can, use Tackle. I promise that I won't lead you astray.” Gaia shook off the shock of just being attacked and nodded. This was no longer about the scarf. The Pidgey was full of pride and egoistic belief. It was clear that it would not back down unless taught a lesson. Oh, well. He always was a good educator. Clavis continued to look at the bird Pokemon with something that was surely steady inevitability.

The pidgey was quick to wake up from its own shock, "did you see that?!" It called excitedly to Gaia and revealed just how young and inexperienced it was. It forgot all about the scarf, and that it had just thought Gaia was annoying or something it needed to put in place. It flapped its wings a few times as it tried to recreate what it had just done but failed. Gaia bulldozed her way towards it, only to miss by a hair as it jumped forward, completely obvious to her attempted attack. It felt the brush of wind from her running past and it looked over its shoulder at her. "Did you see how I did that? I really want to do it again," it said and looked back down at its wings with a frown. "I tried to hit you with a wing," it said slowly and raised a wing, "And then I did this.." It sent it down with a sharp movement and a blue-white-ish energy blade shot through the air and cut the tip of the grass in front of the pidgey. "I did it!" It exclaimed excitedly, "Did you see that? Did you see that? Wasn't that awesome!" It chirped ecstatic and jumped around in a happy dance. "I just have to raise my wing and sent it down quickly!" It explained and showed it by doing it again, which set it off once more. "It's so easy! I'm so good!" It praised itself and it puffed itself up. Gaia showed her 'excitement' for its newfound move by ramming into it and senting it toppling over in the grass. It laid still, a newly discovered move hadn't been enough to help it this time, perhaps it could teach it some humility instead. The pidgey was free to catch for Clavis if he wished to, if nothing else he could surely sell it as not many pidgey's knew the move Air Cutter and it was a pretty powerful move. It could surely be a strong partner if he decided to keep it around and give it the time it needed to grow and be strong. Gaia won her first battle and grows +2 levels to [Lv 7]! She learns Growth! Gaia, once again calm, quickly snatched up the scarf. Taking it to Clavis where he tied it back to her bulb, slightly tighter this time. Patting Gaia on the head, Clavis realized that his blood pressure was much higher than usual. He stood and hesitated for a brief moment before reaching into his bag and pulling out a Pokeball. He threw it at the Pokemon and watched for any chance for the Pidgey to reject it. He had never seen a Pidgey use that move, although it wasn’t a necessarily rare one. He would have to ask Aunt Murray about it. But if it was normal or not, Clavis would be stuck with it for a while. After all, he couldn’t let an inexperienced Pokemon with a move that like that near his sister. What big brother would he be if it were to hurt her, or worse, make her mad. Clavis looked to his side, surprised to see that Gaia was looking at the Pokéball with a tired look. This whole “Pokémon Trainer” thing might be more delightful than one would’ve thought.
Picking up the Pokeball, he reached into his bag to pull out two potions. After giving it to them, he continued. Smiling down Route 29 until he found something else to interest him. A small pink winged bird watched Clavis intensely as he battles the other bird. Its sharp talon dug into the bark of the old oak tree where it stood and watched the new trainer. The territorial bird spent several springs chasing these pesky brown birds away from their nests, only to find that they had multiplied and returned with more each year. It was good that this stranger captured them and transported them far away from the territorial bird's area. But e question remained: what about the lad? He seemed... Risky. What if he wanted more than his fair share of Pidgey for the capturing? So the small bird dived down to the ground below and puffed up it's feathers so that it could look much larger and more intimidating than it was on its own. It would scare the child away by simply challenging Clavis and his makeshift team of Pokemon to a battle. The Pidgey always fled in fear whenever the Spearow showed up and scared them away from their territory. This Spearow had absolutely no reason to think that Clavis would react any differently. It hissed, scratching the ground underneath its sharp talons, and held it's wings out wide out at its sides in an aggressive stance. "This land doesn't belong to you!" [/B] The Spearow lowered its head between its shoulders defensively and growled. It hopped towards Clavis while flapping it's wings at its sides as if it were trying to shoo the boy away. "I'm giving you one chance to scram before I have to get nasty. This is Spearow territory! Even if you got rid of the Pidgey for me, that does not mean I can just let you pass through freely!" Spearow hissed and would try to peck at Clavis' shoes with its sharp beak if the young trainer didn't react quickly enough. A Wild Spearow appeared! Level 2. It knows Egg Move Astonish. What will Clavis do? -1 Poke Ball deducted for Pidgey capture. Shiny? nqXEpAWN1-42Egg Move: 1-81-42·1-8

The agitated Spearow stepped in his way and he noticed that Gaia tensed at its shrieks. It appeared to be trying to make itself larger than it was. Suppressing the urge to snort, he stepped forward, although he was already close enough, and murmured, “I don't want any trouble. Fighting you would be inconvenient to me at the moment.” When the Pokemon did not show signs of wanting to back down, Clavis’ eyes narrowed. Whether that was from delight or annoyance, his smile gave no better guess, he whispered to Gaia, “Use Tackle, please.” He had fought with Spearow before, back in Kalos, but never with a Pokemon. Usually, he'd throw dirt or rocks at it so he could escape. Spearow were ridiculously determined. Clavis would have to give it his all if he wanted to proceed.

The tiny sparrow stared up at the large human through narrowed eyes. With its wings stretched out at its sides and its fears all puffed it, it had to be the scariest thing out there. Why wasn’t Clavis and his little bulbous plant Pokemon turning around and running as fast as they could to get away?! It zipped up into the air with a loud shriek and kicked with its legs towards Clavis in hopes that its sharp feet would get him to move as far away from it as possible. They may not have wanted trouble, but trouble was all that Spearow would give Clavis and Gaia if they refused to leave. Gaia sprang into action in an instant. She leaped up high off the ground and slammed her thick skull into Spearow’s chest, knocking the bird away from her trainer. Spearow gasped loudly as it spiraled backwards through the air and landed with a loud thud in the grass a short distance away from Clavis and Gaia. It hopped up onto its sharp talons and shook itself vigorously while coughing. Who knew that a plant could attack with such a powerful force?! It wouldn’t be enough to deter the wild bird from scaring them off. “Why won’t you leave?!” Spearow hissed loudly at Gaia. Spearow hopped towards Gaia with its wings outstretched at its side. It obviously just needed to appear larger than life itself. The wild bird screeched with an ungodly sound at the top of its lungs, barely startlying Gaia who jumped back a bit from the bird’s approach. Was Gaia finally see how intimidating this wild bird could be even if its attacks didn’t pack much of a punch? That would be a pleasant gift for Spearow if she was. It was battered and bruised, but couldn’t give up the fight until it managed to chase these trespassers far away from its turf. Clavis winced at the unbearable sound and his upturned mouth twitched downwards for a moment. He looked down at Spearow and, silently, sighed. Another clear strike like Gaia had before would leave the Polemon fainted, not dead, but it would leave the Pokemon with a bruised pride. On the other hand, if he were to go easy and try to ignore it, they might not accept defeat and attack him and Gaia anyway. Clavis nodded to himself and looked at Gaia, who was looking at him with big red eyes. Eyes that reminded him of himself. “I know it must hurt your head to keep doing this, but use Tackle, please.” Clavis, somehow, managed to smirk and look apologetic at the same time.

The Spearow panted and sighed under the weight of its injuries; Gaia's full force attack carried more weight behind it than one might initially think, even for a Pokemon who was 90% head. But still, the Sparrow could not give up until this human turned tail and fled. Too many humans trampled through these grounds, scaring off all the good prey and taking all the good berries for themselves. And when they weren't taking all of the food for themselves, they were capturing the Spearow's friends and family for whatever their purposes were. Were they making them fight for their amusement, or were they being taken away to be eaten? The birds of the forest didn't know, and many were too afraid to find out. So this Spearow felt it was its duty to stay in the fight, to scare them off as soon as possible. The Sparrow swooped in for an attack, but it was too late. Gaia was too quick to respond to her Trainer's orders, charging in headfirst. The two Pokemon collided into each other, a loud thud echoing through the woods as the two bodies collided with one another. There was a brief pause as each one began trying to exert their force upon the other, their heads pushing against one another back and forth. After a moment though, the pain became too much, and the Spearow faltered. Gaia's body weight pushed the bird back, and the bird fell to the ground, rolling in with the dirt and debris on the ground rather painfully. The bird couldn't even muster up enough energy to flap its wings or struggle very much, becoming one with the dirt for now. Gaia could take some pride in herself for managing to power through the pain and overpower the bird; Clavis could continue on with his trek through Route 29, or he could stop to take the Spearow with him. It would be defenseless against the ball, but surely if he left it here on the roadside its kin might come to collect it sooner or later. Gaia won and gained +1 level! Gaia is now Level 8! Clavis sighed, patting Gaia on the head. He lifted the Spearow to the roadside and moved along. He felt a little guilty for the small Pokemon, but all that could be done now was to move forward with a smile on his face. And that's just what he will do.
