Wren approached Cherrygrove city, crumpled brochure of Johto in their hands. Their team was residing in their pokéballs for the time being as they read and walked. "Cherrygrove City... Where you can smell small flowers and a sea breeze. How delightful!" Wren had hardly ever gotten this much sun back in Ballonlea, having lived in the shade surrounded by luminous mushrooms. They wondered if the rumor of a man giving away running shoes was true. Their shoes were okay for walking, but it would be nice to have some for the more active parts of being a trainer. More sun and more exercise... Better late than never!
The budding trainer pulled out the job listings from back in New Bark Town. They took a glance over the papers for reference.
Help Needed
If you are going to Cherrygrove, please come by Juniper Street 4 and ask the Fergusons. Our son went there on his pokémon journey and we haven't heard from him.
That's certainly troubling. Being as sheltered as they were, Wren imagined the parents may be frightened right about now... They emotionally prepared themselves for when they meet the Fergusons. What about the other one?
Experienced Trackers wanted!
Some big pokémon has destroyed the best training route to Cherrygrove, I need help finding a better one, ask for Mrs. Ilmatar at the Collective.
Strange, Wren had made it to town with minimal hold-ups, maybe there was another route to Cherrygrove they hadn't known about? There's plenty of time to explore... Putting the papers back in their tote bag, Wren began heading in. I should cover the Fergusons first, that seems really pressing.

That missing person notice was quite troubling indeed! Who knew what dangers befell that child! Wren, armed with a map and some vague instructions, navigated the streets of Cherrygrove, checking houses and signs for that elusive Juniper St. As they walked, they would feel...as if they were being watched. By something. But what? Glances around would reveal little beyond happy little houses and neat flower boxes. There were a few children playing ahead, tossing a ball back-and-forth, their pet skitty cheerfully winding through their legs. It was a beautiful, peaceful day. What could possibly be making them uncomfortable? A minute of unease would pass, and start to trickle into another. Then, a slight movement would reveal the source. Up ahead was a coiled purple form, watching the trio ahead play with serious, focused intent. Its tail would rattle once before it would start to slither stealthily towards the playing kids and that oblivious little skitty. None of them saw what was coming. They were laughing and giggling and stumbling around as children do. The skitty was focused on that ball. Little paws bapped at the side when it passed by, and every so often it would scoop up said ball with its tail and give it a toss to keep the game of catch going. The ekans slithered closer. Closer. On the hunt. On the prowl. Heading straight for that little skitty like it was a scrumptious snack.

Fruitless in their search for the Fergusons' residence, Wren's anxiety began to build. They were in a whole new city, in a whole new region, being watched by who knows what. A hand flew to their mouth, but the sensation of the glove to their teeth reminded themself not to bite their nails. I'm not doing that anymore.
The trainer began to suss out whatever was looking at them. Turns out there was a wild Ekans that now had it's eyes on a couple kids and it's pet Skitty. Wren had always been afraid of snake pokémon. They just creeped them out. What was important was the fact that it was fast approaching those kids.
Hands shot up to project their shout. "Watch out, behind you!" Accompanying their warning, Wren sent out River for the first time, revealing a round and colorful Azurill.
Wren wanted to be careful to not aim a projectile move at the kids. "River, use Bubblebeam!"

At the sound of Wren's shout, the kids turned and screamed, scooping their pet and dashing out of the way of danger just as the ekans lunged. It hissed with menace, frustrated at the loss of its meal, before turning its form to face the one who thwarted it. Its tail tip rattled vigorously with ire. And it met that stream of bubbles with a flurry of poisoned needles that ejected from its maw. Bubbles were popped as the projectiles met, and mist sprayed everywhere. But on both sides, the attacks would go through, sending the ekans and the azurill stumbling back a step. They were on even ground. The ekans coiled itself up defensively, eyes narrowed with suspicion. It hungered. "You will make a tasssssty snack," it hissed at River with predatorial menace. "Aw, jeez, why does this have to be my first battle?" The tiny Azurill whined as it bounced atop it's tail. The baby was shaking like a leaf to Wren's dismay. Her trainer swallowed their fear of the Ekans and of River's own. They read somewhere that being confident in battle can translate to the Pokemon's confidence as well. They took a deep breath and called out to River. "You got this River! Bubblebeam, again!"

"You're awfully bold...Ssssssince you look like a ssssssnack," the ekans hissed, its stare unsettling. Very, very unsettling. It narrowed its gaze and slithered closer, its eyes making the Azurill shiver. "The ssssssskitty essssscaped becausssse of you. I think...I will eat you insssssstead!" Yep. That was DANGER! This ekans was on the prowl, very boldly stalking its prey now, even as the flurry of bubbles smacked into it again. It hissed, offended, but managed to shake them off. However, she did succeed in making the snake reaccess its approach and slow down a little, more cautious. But it kept stalking. Slithering. Growing closer and closer as it readied itself to strike. Its venom sacks felt swollen with fluid. Ready for when it lunged and sank its fangs into vulnerable prey. "Come heeeere little sssssssnack," it coaxed. "Time to become lunch." River felt like she could pass out from how scared she was, but her trainer's kind words and praise held her together. "You're doing great, River! I'm right here! Hit 'em with Charm!" To her chagrin, the Polka Dot Pokémon put on a brave and endearing smile. She tilted her head sweetly atop her tail, hoping that her façade would slow down the predator before her. She tried her best not to tremble due to her decreased defense. "W-Why would you want to eat me? I'm too sweet and cute for all that! How about we be friends?" ____ (OOC: Totally forgot to establish Wurmple in my old thread. Here he is! The snake actually hesitated for a moment. Coiling on itself and watching with narrow, suspicious eyes. Its tongue flicked out to taste the air. To taste the scrumptious snack that sat before it, trying to be cute and pitiful and charming. That hungry stare made poor azurill's heart race and more chills race down her spine. Oh nonono. This was bad. She felt so vulnerable right now and couldn't help but quiver a little. Of course, at least, she'd managed to get the ekans to not strike with her cuteness. But perhaps that was because it was pausing to contemplate how best to gobble her up whole, like that skitty it wanted to devour earlier... Its belly rumbled a bit, reminding the ekans that hunting needed done. So back to slithering it went, edging ever closer and closer to its tasty, tasty prey. "Cute ssssssssnack is bessssst snack," it decided to say in a sinister hiss. Wild Encounter Weather: Clear [attr="class","qkt-bkgd"] [attr="class","qkt-wild-pkmn"] Ekans LV 9 HP 64% [18/28]

"You've got this, River! Just a little more! Bubblebeam, again!" Wren cheered, using their hands to boost the morale of themselves and their Pokemon. River felt terrible during this fight, but things weren't that bad, yet, she thought. Maybe I can do this! The timid mouse thought to herself. She bounced on her tail to propel herself high into the air and Bubblebeam down at the ekans, bouncing back down and backwards to regain some distance between them. "The only snack you'll get is a defeat sandwich!" River shot back, awkwardly.

"I beg to disssssagree," the snake hissed, lifting up its head to spit more poisonous little spines at the Azurill. That gaping, dangerous maw was right in front of River now. Full of deadly promise. She managed to spit bubbles to slow the poisonous stings from hitting her too badly, and avoided getting poisoned, but this was a very slow battle of attrition. Who would win? It was anyone's guess, really. The little baby pokemon was fairy and weak to poison, but she was doing her best against this venomous snake looking for a snack. As the scene cleared, it was evident that both pokemon were staring to tire. Though neither appeared willing to give in quite yet. "You will be a tassssy sssssssnack becaussssse you are weak. River was starting to get annoyed. Sure, she was scared, but she was handling this battle quite well all things considered. "If I'm so weak, why haven't you eaten me yet, then?" She spat. She bounced atop her tail, gaining some distance away from the snake, which helped her regain a bit of confidence. "Keep going! Bubblebeam attack!" Wren cheered, using their hands to accentuate their intentions. Wren wasn't aware of the type disadvantage, but maybe their Pokemon was just putting on a good show despite her timid nature.

The ekans hissed with menace and lunged at the taunt. It wasn't quite close enough to bite the azurill, but its body did loosely wrap around the space where the little pokemon was bouncing. "You won't lassssssst much longer little ssssssnack. Your fear makessssss you tassssstier," it promised before trying once more to knock it down with a poisonous sting. But those barbs were met with bubbles and the two were once more blown apart, space forced between them from the impact of the speed matched assaults. They were both clearly wearing thin. The victory might just be determined by who was faster in the next couple turns, or if the ekans could poison the little azurill. Perhaps the ekans would get overconfident and go back to leering, or just try to wrap River up in its coils now that it was so close that it could touch its prey. Wren was impressed with River's performance. The timid little mouse was bouncing around and taking hits like a champ! River swallowed her fear, releasing a Bubblebeam attack before Wren could instruct her. "Just like that, River! Bubblebeam!" The trainer was full on jumping up and down, copying their Pokemon as the Azurill darted about and attacked.

Another exchange of poisonous barbs and bubbles. The ekans was clearly very weak, but so was its prey. Who would be faster? Who would deal the final blow? It was hard to tell at this point. But the wild snake was curled around the bouncing baby, clearly poised to take advantage should she falter. That maw was partly open. Those eyes were narrow with stubbornness and hunger. The snake hissed again. "I. Will. Devour. You. The moment you sssssstop bouncing. You will be in my belly." It was a weaker threat than before, as its strength was faltering. But the threat was still quite present and real. That skitty had been a temping snack before River was placed between the kitten and the hunting snake. "I-I don't think I will!" River spat, pelting the snake with more bubbles. "Just because I'm afraid of you doesn't mean you'll beat me!" She tried her best to shake off her opponent by bouncing more defiantly, despite how weak she has become.
"Please, River, one more time! Bubblebeam!" Wren felt like they were watching ponyta racing neck and neck. If anyone could do it, it was River!
