Sam had to agree, at least the Butterfree was being a good parent and watching out for it's child. As much as she still disliked ripping the poor Pokemon away from it's family, what did trainer's do everyday? The same exact thing. The Sandshrew someone fought could have a clutch back home to watch over. The Wooper someone caught probably had a Quagsire looking for it for days. As much as it pained her to think about it, Sam was taking part in something that destroyed Pokemon families daily. Suddenly the allure of being a Pokemon trainer made her a bit nauseous.
But, NOT being a Pokemon trainer meant staying back home. It meant never meeting Icarus, Garrus or Joka, or any of the other Pokemon she's had before. It meant not ever having the chance to meet to meet other Pokemon. The young trainer had his sights set on a Pokemon, and he wanted it. Would it have been so bad if the mother wasn't here? She almost could feel her mother watching her, and Sam was curious what her own parent would think of what she was doing. It was a necessary part of life that nobody thought of until it was being defended.
"Joka, you're doing great." Sam reassured her newest team member, which seemed to give the bat something to spin around about. Flapping her wings to keep to the skies was easy, but it was about to be harder with the copious amount of string that the Caterpie had spat at them. Sam couldn't help but chuckle when the boy mentioned the bright side. "I gotta agree with you there. I'm glad it's not the face either." That was definitely something to be thankful for indeed. "Joka, we're gonna do the same thing again, alright? This time, be careful. You've got all that string on you..."
Not wanting to take the baby AND hurt her own Pokemon in the process, Sam watched with nervous anxiety as her own Pokemon executed her own aerial acrobatics. Meanwhile, it seemed as though Adonis and the boy were doing well. Taunting it seemed like rubbing salt in the wound, but it would lower defenses, and make things easier to damage and catch. When put out of perspective, the battle was going well in her favor. Sam would have to get over the dirtier aspects of battling and training if she ever wanted to progress.

For all his enthusiasm, Joey was a complete rookie when it came to actually capturing Pokémon. Adonis had been a gift from his parents, given because he wasn't quite old enough to obtain a real starter yet. Wanting to be like his peers, many of them walking around with Charmanders and Squirtles, and even Bulbasaurs, the boy was naive to the reality of being a real trainer. Joey didn't know he was potentially yanking a young Caterpie from its worried mother, only focused on how such a unique looking bug would be a great friend for his Rattata. That, and it would totally increase his cred at school. No more wedgies for this aspiring trainer! Gripping tight to this train of thought, Joey twisted his cap in an anxious gesture before calling out to Adonis.
"Hey buddy, show 'em how fast you are with Quick Attack! Don't let that nasty string slow ya down!" he yelled, pumping a fist wildly in the air. But a mere moment later, after a confused glance from Adonis, Joey put a palm to his face and smacked himself. "DUH. Gotta tell you who to attack, don't I? Ehehehe... still learning the ropes. Uh, go after Caterpie!" he amended, offering a sheepish shrug while looking sidelong at Sam. Joey had a long way to go if he was ever to become a tried and true trainer, even if he had the gist of battling down. Adonis twisted his head to chew through the silk tying his legs down, ignoring the rest clinging obstinately to his fur before bolting away.
Moving fast enough to become a blur, the Rattata let out a triumphant squeak as he careened into the blue Caterpie, toppling the squealing Bug-type over and dodging mama as she fluttered towards him. Shrill, angry noises preceded mama Butterfree shaking her wings, eyes glowing a faint blue before several small yellow objects materialized in front of her. Spinning wildly, the objects morphed into tiny stars that sped across the field, homing in on both Adonis and Joka. Adonis staggered as the Swift struck him painfully across the snout, catching sight of Joka dropping in altitude as she took the hit as well. Caterpie followed up by launching another String Shot, a sight that made Joey groan in dislike.
Undeterred, the Noibat flared her wings wide and maneuvered speedily around mama Butterfree, lashing out hard and fast with a decisive blow. A single, sorrowful trill escaped mama before the Bug-type simply dropped to the ground, all energy depleted. "Yeehaw! That's one Pokémon down!" Joey cheered, knowing he was a step closer to adding the Caterpie to his team. But as he watched, the Caterpie squirmed over to its mother, nudging her repeatedly to try and rouse her. "Aww... sorry little fella, but she can't battle right now," murmured Joey, the excitement somewhat fading from his face.

Joka's hits were harder and harder, and Sam knew that she'd end up knocking out the Butterfree this turn. As much as it pained her heart, the show must go on, right? "Hey, kid." She murmured, watching Joka fly towards Butterfree. "Just... take good care of this Caterpie. It's very special, and I think that the Butterfree and Caterpie are going to be sad for a while. So you need to take the best care you can for it, that way you can forge a bond with it." Butterfree let out a cry and fell to the ground.
Joka returned to Sam's side, resting on her arm to keep from flapping tirelessly. "Pokemon aren't about street cred, or about how they look. Many Pokemon look really weird, and people may not like them. Like... Slakoths. Nobody really likes them. They're lazy, and don't really battle well. But I have one, and I make sure that he's just as loved as the rest of mine. I don't care that he's a bad battler. It just takes a little extra effort. Pokemon aren't all about the battles, they're a big responsibility. If you take this Caterpie from it's mom, you're going to need to be it's best friend, and for the right reasons."
It wasn't her intention to lecture the boy, but she did want to make sure that he understood what he was about to do. His motives seemed to be that of an excited boy; none. He wasn't in it for ill intent, but he wasn't in it for the partner either. Perhaps the illustrious exotic partner and what that would mean for him in the real world. "Joka and I will play on the sides, that way you can focus in on the Caterpie. We'll jump in if we're needed. Joka, play Defensive with a Screech." Joka nodded, but refrained from taking to the air as Caterpie tried to nudge it's mom. "Are you prepared to take care of this Caterpie as well, if not better, than it's mom?" She tried to think of an allegory to try and help explain the situation.
Unfortunately, her mouth was dry and she was silent. Words weren't coming to her mind like they should've. She wanted to think of a better way to explain to the boy, but she wasn't able. Instead, she just watched Adonis and the boy, hoping he'd truly grasp the importance of the situation.

Sam watched the gears turn in the young boys head, hoping that his mind would be swayed eventually. Had it been a lone Pokemon, perhaps she'd have had an easier time with this. However, watching Caterpie take it's place in front of it's mother... Sam's heart broke all over again. She was glad she'd ordered Joka to just screech instead of actually hurt the bug. She could deal with the mother for a time, but knocking out the baby would have been too much for her to deal with. However, the boy hadn't put it past himself just yet, and had charged forward with the plan to capture it still. Adonis took advantage of the screech distraction, and knocked out the bug. "Good job, you won." She tried to sound happy for Joey, but the words just sounded flat. He was about to get what he wanted, and that should make them both happy, right? However, Joey seemed just about as happy as it as she was. "You don't want to go through with it?" The change in the boy's heart was, well, surprising, but not a bad thing. It made Sam smile knowing that the Caterpie would stay with it's family and not be ripped away without choice. Sam was about to pat the kid on the back and tell him he'd done the right thing, but an eerie shadow passed over the ground. Sam looked up in enough time to see the hungry bird descending down upon the fainted bugs. Joey didn't think Adonis could stand a chance, and Sam didn't have enough time to process using her Pokemon. Bag slipping off her shoulders, Sam charged forward in an almost out of body experience. Her pokeballs clinked to the ground, releasing the rest of her Pokemon. Joka squeaked in horror, flying forward after her trainer, while the others gathered their surroundings before realizing what was happening. Icarus was quickest, and surged forward with Joka to follow his trainer. Sam had put herself between Pidgeotto and the bugs, and the bird was closing in fast. Flailing her arms out to the side to their full extension, Sam hoped it would be enough. If it wasn't, well... Her Pokemon filed in beside her. Her newest addition, the Litleo and Noibat, took their place in front of the bodies while Icarus climbed up onto Sam's head. Electricity sparked from his cheeks in a clear threat to the bird, while Garrus slowly tried to catch up to defend as well. At least he tried, right? Sam jumps in to save the family! All her Pokemon come out to defend her, and the bugs! Maybe it'll scare away Pidgeotto!

Adonis, weakened from the battling, could only throw his encouragement in as a squeak of warning at Pidgeotto. Joey, taking a cue from Sam, put himself in the bird's way as well, minding Sam's Pokémon as he stepped over. "Yeah! Go away you big bully!" he shouted, flailing his arms around enough to give the Pidgeotto paused. It had stopped upon seeing the rush to protect the fallen bugs, and now hovered uncertainly in the air. Beak snapping shut, it glared down at them all, knowing there was no way it could fight off multiple Pokémon AND two determined trainers. "Geoooo!" it trilled angrily, swooping down threateningly before pulling away suddenly, wheeling round to fly off into the distance.
Blowing out a relieved sigh, Joey lifted his hat to wipe the sweat that lined his brow and turned to Sam. "That was so awesome! I'm so glad we could save these two from being snacks for that bird!" he gushed, sporting a brilliant smile that only grew as the two bugs stirred on the ground. Mama was the first to rise, head lifting up and red eyes wary as she took in the Pokémon and people surrounding them. Another shrill cry sounded out, familiar to both Sam and Joey by now, heralding the arrival of a second Butterfree. Unlike mama, this one sported no markings on its wings, identifying it as a male. And judging by the worried look he wore, it was the papa Butterfree.
It was a touching reunion as the two Butterfree nuzzled each other happily, mama picking up Caterpie when it finally awoke as well. The two parents floated over to Sam and Joey, papa offering a small greenish bag filled with a strange powder to Sam before the family fluttered off. "They looked really happy, didn't they? Even though I didn't get another friend for Adonis, I had fun. And learned things, too! Thank you so much for coming with me!" Joey said, grinning again and sticking out one of his hands for Sam to shake. Adonis clambered up onto the boy's shoulder, squeaking at Sam and her Pokémon as his way of saying thanks. "I better get back home though. Maybe I'll see you again in the future huh?" Laughing, Joey waved over his shoulder as he jogged into the grass, leaving Sam on her own once more.
Congratulations!

Sam fully expected to feel the world of pain from Pidgeotto's claws and beak. Instead, she saw Joey run in to protect the family as well as her Pokemon. It was a heartening thing to see. The Pidgeotto swooped down, but balked at the last moment with a shrill cry, executing a swift arc to avoid the onslaught of pain awaiting it. Sam's chest hurt, and it was then she realized she'd been holding her breath. Letting it out with a large, relieved sigh, Sam placed her hands on her knees in a bit of a relieved laugh. "That... was close." She chuckled, looking over at Joey.
The boy seemed excited to help as well, and he seemed unscathed from the bird. "I'm glad everything worked out well! That could've been messy." Sam felt a tugging at her pants leg, signalling that Garrus had finally joined the party. She picked up the lazy sloth and gave him a hug. "Better late than never!" Garrus gurgled, and a shrill cry grabbed all her Pokemon's attention. "Hey, another Butterfree!" Sam warned. Joka took flight once more, ready to defend if needed.
However, it wasn't needed.
The Butterfree was a male, and more than likely the father of the shiny Caterpie. The family was coming to, and more than likely could piece together what had happened. With the family reunited, Sam felt much better about the whole situation. A quick glance to Joey seemed to confirm her thoughts; he was feeling the same way. This was teaching him a valuable lesson that many didn't learn until it was too late. The Butterfree approached her and gave her a little bag, and Sam hugged it close and nodded her head at the Butterfree. With that, the family was gone and she and Joey were left on the route. He thanked her, and she nodded. "No worries! I'm glad you had a good time, and i'm glad you learned something. You and Adonis make a good team." She complimented the pair as they left, leaving her alone in the route once more. She glanced at her team and then proceeded to return t hem to walk along towards Cherrygrove. "We're certainly making progress..." She murmured, looking around. Only one wild Pokemon had graced her presence so far. So many people... The universe knew that she was socially anxious, apparently.
