The temptation to keep Cyrus out just a little bit longer, or perhaps never switch him out, was very strong. Damien watched the sticky web cling to the bird's feathers, making movement difficult yet the sand attack still looked like it had been rather effective. The young trainer had a hand readied on Turret's pokéball and after some hesitation finally decided to stick with his original plan.
"Good job Cyrus, time to let Turret take over." With one hand calling the pidgey back he used his other to toss the tiny turtle out onto the icy field. "Alright Turret, you're up. Water Gun!" he yelled out, pointing to the little bug making its free attack. With how often the squirtle got put out on a switch he was almost used to expecting an attack before he could himself. The water pokémon didn't seem to mind that fact however, beating his shelled chest as if taunting the bug before getting ready for his own attack.

Even though Turret was trying to intimidate the Weedle, the opponent Pokemon was instead, bored at the Squirtle's attempt. This wasn't new, honestly. Looking straight ahead at Turret as if nothing happened, the squishy bug type fired a String Shot at its opponent like it did to the Pidgey earlier. Sure, it's a Squirtle trying to look tough, but the Weedle was rather bored and likely preferred to fight something interesting like the Snorunt. Then, after that move, the Squirtle was covered in its sticky projectile, and likely needed some time to get out. Taking advantage of the situation, the bug type fired a volley of thin, poisonous stings toward the Squirle. Thankfully, the water type was still struggling to get out of the sticky String Shot, and the poison stings weren't deep enough to penetrate into his skin and poison him. After freeing himself, Turret wasted no time to fire a Water Gun. It wasn't like the Weedle was running around anyways. The bug type was drenched, shivered a bit by the water chilled by the atmosphere. It looked like Weedle had taken quite a hit from the water gun.

Watching the battle Damien could almost swear that the weedle just rolled its eyes in disinterest at the squirtle the trainer had just thrown out. With how it had wriggled its way in pursuit of the trainer, sneaking up behind, he figured the bug was pining for a battle. Well, in continued ignorance to the weedle's actual interest, Damien clenched a fist together determined to try and make the fight between Turret and the wild pokémon more exhilarating.
The beads of water rolling down the tan exoskeleton soaking in the chill of winter surrounding them making the poor bug type shiver might help with that. "Work through that sticky web, Turret. Use Tackle!" the ranger called to the tiny turtle. "Then another Water Gun if the weedle can take it." Turret bobbed his head up and down in response, readying for the next bout.

Shocked and shivering from the Water Gun attack it had been hit by in the last round Weedle could feel it's energy slipping away. Water Gun had done a lot more than the bug had thought possible. String Shot did not do as much as the bug had believed it would and Poison Sting lacked enough power to penetrate Turret's skin or shell leaving the bug type in a very bad position as the next round was about to get underway. The stick web created by String Shot did allow Weedle to make the first move and with no other option but to try and attack Weedle tried another Poison Sting hoping the results would be better this time around. To it's dismay however they were not. The tiny needles it fired at Turret mostly bounced off of his thick skin and the handful that did stick hardly caused him any real discomfort. If anything Turret now had even more of a reason than he already did to pummel the bug and as soon as Damien gave the order the turtle sprung into action running as fast as he could towards the young Weedle as fast as the turtle could run. As he slammed into the bug type Weedle fell over on it's side in great pain unable to make any further moves. The bug had taken a considerable amount of damage and it just could not take it anymore as it passed out from exhaustion. Turret had no reason to launch his second attack with his foe unable to pose even the slightest challenge anymore. It would have been a waste of time and energy to fire Water Gun on a knocked out Pokemon so instead he just looked at his defeated foe wondering what Damien would do to the bug now that it could not protect itself from any action Damien may choose to take against it. "Great job, Turret. Belay that last attack order." Damien beamed a smile at the squirtle before recalling his starter pokémon. Looking the weedle the trainer gave a deep sigh. "I better get you out of the open so some bird doesn't snatch you up while you're helpless..." He spoke mostly to himself as he moved to the bug type and carefully scooped it up, making sure not to prick himself on the poison point. The needles may not have gotten through to the tiny turtle, and Damien was wearing gloves, but he didn't exactly want to take unnecessary risk with the nauseous chemical. Thankfully living by a forest most of his life he was relatively versed in getting around the bug types carefully.
With the fainted weedle obscured in the tall grass Damien brushed his hands off and stuffed them back into his coat pockets. He was close to the next route by this point he noted. He stood at the edge of the grass in debate. It didn't last too long. Cyrus still hadn't had himself a battle all on his own, and if Damien's goal here was to train up the little bird he should at least confirm that he is doing so; as much as he'd like to just continue on with just hope he's doing something for the pidgey. It was a bit of a struggle but as always the ranger's helpful nature won over his discomfort. Damien began wandering through the taller sections of grass and near the edges of the route in search of another wild pokémon.

Unbeknown to Damien, a wide pair of crimson eyes were watching him during the tail end of his battle against the Weedle. Small in stature and not an incredibly common sight within the area, the wild, lurking Pokemon was known as Ralts. Having picked up on the sound of conflict, the small creature had weaved it's way through the tall grass, quickly finding itself within close proximity to a battle between a human trained Pokemon and a wild one. Being a psychic type, the Ralts was very sensitive to sound and movement around it and thanks to this, it had managed to flee from potential opponents numerous times. Usually before they even knew the Ralts, itself, was nearby. Elusive, the wild Pokemon was inexperienced in terms of battling but it's constant fleeing also meant that it lacked any sort of social interaction with both human and Pokemon alike.
Yet something within Damien had drawn in the attention of the Ralts. It was able to pick up on the emotions of others, mainly greedy trainers would cross it's path, forcing it to flee. But Damien was different. Watching cautiously with a hint of intrigue, the Ralts blinked as it saw the human carefully and thoughtfully move the fainted Weedle away from harm. An odd feeling rose within the body of the Ralts, the tiny Pokemon wanting to examine him further. Remaining hidden still as he took the opportunity to continue searching through the tall grass nearby, the silent Pokemon tossed the idea around in it's head but finally decided to step forward. It couldn't understand why it was being drawn to this human but maybe if it approached or battled him, the Ralts would understand. Was it his kindness earlier or had the Ralts picked up on how he wanted to help his Pidgey, Cyrus, grow? Regardless, his search for an opponent was soon over, as the Ralts rustled through a tuft of grass and made itself known.

The grasses crunched lightly under his feet as he moved through the wild area. It didn't seem to matter how carefully he stepped, but considering that this time he was looking for an encounter that didn't bother him too much. The young lad kept an eye out for movements out of the grass, turning around on occasion in case there was another brave weedle scurrying its way up behind him. After what seemed like an age rustling through the grass in the frigid weather a path off to his left began stirring.
Excited words flashed through his mind as he drew closer to see the red fins poking above the sea of green. Damien stopped, wracking his mind for what this one could be. It wasn't a common bird, bug, or rodent that normally prowled the area; though neither was that Oddish. The ranger reached into a pocket to pull out the dex he was given at the start of his journey. Aiming the sensor at the quiet psychic type the information populated the small screen. "A Ralts," he repeated the pokémon's name aloud. He took another look at the type listed in the information provided him then pulled out one of his pokéballs. "Go, Cyrus! This should be a good test."
The young pidgey cooed happily as it was called out onto the grassy battlefield. He looked up at the taller wild pokémon and fluffed its feathers in preparation to begin. Damien inhaled deeply before giving the first order of the battle.
"Let's start out strong, go for a Tackle!"

The Ralts was curious about what kind of trainer Damien was, and having the ranger accepted the battle request, it was able to use this opportunity to examine the human. The boy didn't seem to be familiar with Pokemon like Ralts, as the psychic type observe the human pulling out a Pokedex to read about its entries. Sure, Ralts have seen many humans pulled out that device on unknown Pokemon species, but this would be a rare time that someone actually would use the device on a Ralts. Neat! After the trainer sent out Pidgey, Ralts thought that perhaps it was an attraction toward the trainer who wanted to nurture his Pokemon with care. With the avian hopping forward for a full-force tackle, the Ralts was preparing for a retaliation attack. However, it wasn't expecting to be hit with a lot of force from such a little bird. It was a critical hit! The Ralts was in pain from the attack, but nevertheless could feel the bond between Cyrus and Damien from the attack. There was something about them that it hadn't observe before on other trainers. Hoping to see what their next move would be, the psychic type let out a growl, piercing the Cyrus's eardrums and lowered the fluffy Mcfeatherface's physical attack.

Watching the little bird bob-skip forward after the wild psychic type was a display no one was expecting to be followed by such a powerful attack. The tall and coolly stiff blades of grass blocked some view, but the push back from the pidgey's forceful tackle was impossible to take note of even if the ranger had been blind. All of the breath the trainer had held in at the start of the fight escaped in a baffled gasp seconds before his surprised expression morphed into one of prideful admiration.
He'd done it. That unfortunate beaten bird at risk of drowning in a shallow puddle, bullied by angry spearow, starved of food... that bird was now nearly one-hit KO'ing other wild pokémon undoubtedly stronger than those from its home forest. Admittedly the tackle Damien had just witnessed appeared to have been a bit fluky on just how strong it came off, so it wasn't a very good judgement of how well Cyrus had actually grown for the average case, but at this moment that was a small detail. The sense of accomplishment overwhelmed all else.
"Great job, Cyrus!" the boy cried out, warmed with joy and adrenaline. "Don't get intimidated by that growl, you've got this one in the bag. Make another Tackle attack on the ralts."

Sensing the growing bond between the trainer and his Pidgey, the wild Ralts lowered it's head, hiding it's crimson eyes shyly beneath it's helmet like hair. Still shuddering after the impact from Cyrus' tackle attack, the tiny fairy like Pokemon struggled to keep itself upright. It's arm wrapped around it's own body, the Ralts felt so weak after that attack and it's opponents only seemed to be becoming stronger. Picking up on Damien's sense of accomplishment and finally feeling that he was going in the right direction with his Pidgey, the tiny Ralts parted it's mouth in slight surprise. Had it been attracted to Damien in particular, due to the sprouting friendships he was beginning to share with his Pokemon?
Needing to stay focused if it wanted to stand a chance in this battle, the inexperienced Ralts turned it's head back toward Cyrus, who had just been giving another order. Fighting off the sound of the intimidating growl from the Ralts within the back of it's mind, the Pidgey was able to spread his wings and skip along the dirt before lifting itself into the air for a tackle attack. Picking up the speed with a few manic flaps of it's arms, Cyrus aimed straight for the Ralts and with all it's might, managed to collide into the wild Pokemon, knocking it out cold. Landing next to the fainted Ralts and cooing gently, Cyrus had managed to win this one with relative ease.

That battle had gone incredibly well. Even better than he had hoped it could have. Cyrus rammed into the wild ralts for a second time signaling the fight to an end, the little bird quietly reveling in its accomplishment next to his defeated opponent. Gazing from several feet away there was but a moment where Damien felt an uncomfortable pang at the thought of a strong bird. Flashbacks to his couple of encounters with frightening spearow briefly disturbing his thoughts. But the small pidgey that turned its head to stare up at the trainer had a different kind of sparkle in its eye; one that wasn't the murderous twinkle he usually associated with avians.
"That was fantastic Cyrus!" Damien cheered, "You've come a long way." The boy grabbed his pidgey's pokéball and held it out. With his pokémon returned in a chirp of confidence the ranger's eyes turned down to the unconscious ralts. He always felt a little bad for the wild ones trainers used for raising their team. But it was as much an experience for them as it was for captured pokémon.
After a passing moment of considering adding to his growing team Damien gave a respectful mutter to the fainted ralts then started moving on down the route. With how successful that battle had been he didn't feel the need to continue delaying his advancement to the next area: Route 31.
Violet City, here we come.
