Winter was yet again on its way through the region, growing crystals dazzling in the morning sun to make a sea of glimmering gems hanging off of otherwise barren trees shriveling up for the oncoming cold. Grass withered and crunched beneath the ranger's feet as he moved on from Violet City into the southern route known as 32. It wasn't wholly unfamiliar, being that he'd been through here twice before. Once on his way to New Bark to begin his journey and then a second time in search for the swarming pups. The memory brought a fond smile to his face. This time, though, he was heading back home: to Azalea.
[break] [break]
It was yet another thought that warmed him as he traveled through the frosty terrain. The glow from having successfully obtained his first badge was the other, but it certainly didn't hurt that he had layered clothing and slipped his bandana over his face to help stave off the air's chilly touch. Somehow he always managed to avoid any nice weather, whether it was thunderstorms, hail storms, torrent winds, or this biting cold. He wondered if maybe he was cursed. Bearithusa being a manifestation of said jinx. He'd met the mischievous little thing during the last hail season, following a seemingly never-ending thunderstorm, and she herself summoned dark clouds that spit the icy pellets during battle. The grasp of winter was just something he couldn't escape from.
[break] [break]
As his mind whirled with all sorts of distracting thoughts, Damien's feet kept walking forward along the route. It was less straight forward than the earlier ones, with many branch offs and ways to end up circling back to where you'd started. Already he'd found himself on the way back to Violet having gone a full 360 around a rocky outcropping. He scratched his head, cheeks warming with mild embarrassment, and spun around to get back on track.
[break] [break]
Now less distracted, the young trainer set his mind to the task at hand: finding Union Cave. He knew vaguely where it was, thanks to the town map he'd withdrawn from his pack, but it was just a trick of keeping track of where he was in accordance to the colored sheet. He had partial memories of some land marks he could use in reverse from his trip from Azalea nearly a year ago now, so that would help; if he could find them. Right now it was just stiff grasses trying not to shiver, trees preparing for a long sleep, and rocks. Nothing at all looked particularly familiar and there hadn't been any formation that caught his eye. So, he kept moving. Eyes peering at the map as he went.

As the weather got cold, Damien was still enjoying the glory moment of his first gym battle. With the Feather Badge in his hand, his next goal would be the HIve badge in Azalea Town. But first, he would have to find his way toward the city, and the Union Cave is one way to reach his next destination. As he kept his eyes on the map, he could heard a loud sound calling toward him, also it sounds young and shivering. "Sssiir! Are you looking for the Union Cave? If you follow this paattth--" he pointed on the ground "you'll see a sign and then you can reach the Union Cave." He was feeling cold from the weather change, but not enough for him to be shivering every three words yet. A subtle shivering could be seen on this youngster's movement. Instead of simply continuing his way and leaving, the young boy's shorts pocket had a Rattata scurrying out, squeaking, and then climbed on top of his shoulder. Noticing this happened, the boy curiously asked, "Are you a Pokemon trrainerrr? Would you like to have a battle with me and my Rattata?"

The ranger peeled his eyes away from the map in hand to spot a shivering young lad. The first thing he made note of was the shorts. These youngsters. They really really loved their shorts. Hiding his baffled feelings toward the garb he passed a warm smile to the boy, giving him a quick confirmation of yes in regards to where he was trying to head. With the Youngster's finger jutting down southward Damien's eyes followed the invisible line. The path was thick with bush and tall grasses from what he could tell. It was no wonder he was unable to re-find his way there; he was thinking of the previous routes where there was a relatively open and clear space.
[break] [break]
Damien lightly whapped himself in the head, "Oh of course," he began with half a laugh. He'd spent so much time around the larger cities and well paved paths that he'd forgotten what kind of terrain he was heading into. Well forested wilds with nothing but small trails as a relief to travelers making their way closer. "Thank you." He gave a tip of his hat to the boy and began folding the map up a bit so it was easier to hold in one hand.
[break] [break]
Then came the battle proposal. Damien beamed a smile at the kid and the little rat perched on the shoulders of its trainer. "Sure, it'll help stave off this chill." Damien switched the map to his left hand so he could grasp one of the pokéballs on his belt and chuck it into the air. In a flash of light a spry Lillipup hopped into the field with an excited bark. Tongue panting, the thick bushy fur of the young dog fluffed to protect its little body, Booker was ready for action.
[break] [break]
"Ready?" he asked the Youngster, though it was a question that didn't really need answering given the boy was the one that instigated the challenge. "Good luck!" he called to his opponent before giving instructions to his own pokémon. "Alright Booker, let's start this off with a Bite attack."

Putting his Rattata on the ground, Albert nodded to answer his opponent's "ready?" question. Now that the battle was starting, the child was glad to have another battle to starve off his boredom. It's easy to get bored when you're friends with some Violet City citizens and don't normally battle for money. He was hoping to win some to buy himself some noodles from a new noodles restaurant that opened in the city. "Get ready, Rattata! Use Focus Energy!" He hollered energetically after Damien had sent out the Lillipup. As the canine came forward, the rodent prepared itself for a crunch. Except the Lillipup's developing jaw wasn't that strong, The impact from the Lillipup's Bite felt more like it was being squeezed in Albert's house when it ran into some narrow spaces. After the dog's attack, the Rattata's body glowed white and some bit of red, and despite the damage it took, the mouse looked more fierce and determined, as much as a rodent could look like.

"Well done Booker!" he cheered on, the lillipup jumping side to side excitedly as the rattata started preparing itself for the next round. Focus Energy wasn't a move Damien had faced before but he wasn't unfamiliar with its effects. But they should be fine 'cause--no wait! He almost underestimated the Youngster. His opponent's Rattata likely had Quick Attack in its repertoire. Mixed with a crit booster it would ensure the next round had the rodent on top; especially so should the focus move pan out into a critical hit.
[break][break]
"I see where you're going with this, nicely done," he complimented Albert with a grin. Sadly it was too late a realization to do much about it given his own pokémon's move set. "Watch out for a speedy approach Booker, it might hit harder than you expect. Do what you can against it then retaliate with another Bite." And that was about all he could do to help prepare his pup for what was to come. Now all he could do is cross his fingers and hope he wasn't about to witness an 1-Hit KO.

vs Youngster Albert__________________________________
With a sudden shiver, Albert ran his hands across his own, goosebump covered arms. The weather was getting colder but the boy was still outside in shorts, they must've been really comfy. Besides, now that the battle had truly started, his was slowly forgetting the coldness around him. "H-Heeh heh..." Letting out a shy chuckle as Damien commented on the boy's strategy, he raised a hand to adjust his blue cap. "T-Thanks! I guess that means y-you know what is coming next!" Trying to shake off his shivering stutter by becoming more energised and focusing on the battle at hand, the youngster flew his arm forward, hoping to achieve what Damien was concerned about. "N-Now Rattata! Get in there with a Q-Quick Attack!" The words leaving his lips, the purple rodent knew exactly what to do.
Completely focused on Booker, the Rattata sprang forward with incredible speed, scuttling across the ground as it made it's way towards the bewildered pooch. With great momentum behind it's movements, the rodent crashed into the Lillipup landing what both looked and sounded like a painful collision. Though Booker remained standing, it still brought a great grin to Albert's face. "A-A-Amazing! Y-Your Pokemon is s-s-strong to survive my Rattata's c-combo!" Holding a thumbs up cheerfully, the boy deflated ever so slightly when the pup lashed forward with another Bite attack. He was certain that the first part of the match would end but somehow, it managed to wriggle itself out of the pup's jaw. Letting out a playful bark, Booker panted at the sight of Rattata hanging on in there but the rodent didn't have as much energy as Booker currently did.

The rattata was a blur as it moved, zooming in to the little pup as a haze of purple before slamming into its opponent. Damien grimaced at the impact, worried that Booker would be rather worse for wear, but to his amazement the lillipup sprung right back up like it was nothing. His mouth hung slightly ajar. The young pup was much stronger than he had given him credit. How embarrassing was that?
[break] [break]
Damien chuckled with relief in reply to Youngster Albert's compliments; the teen at a loss of words. But this match wasn't out of surprises yet. The ranger figured it would be over once he saw the lashing of teeth Booker had given the rodent but it was the rattata's turn to turn heads in shock.
[break] [break]
"Whoa!" he blurted out as the strong rat wriggled free and managed to stay on its feet; albeit on its last legs from the looks of it. "Your rattata has great endurance. I bet after some more training it'll be a force to reckon with. Especially with that combo." Damien paused, an excited grin on his face. "But I think we have this one, right Booker?"
[break] [break]
The lillipup barked triumphantly in response before bowing down in preparation for his trainer's next command. "Let's finish this with a Tackle."

N...n..nice tackle there! The youngster shivered out as another chilly breeze blew through the streets, though it seemed as Booker was just getting started as the little purple rat was not silent, fainted, on the ground. Albert recalled his Pokemon's ball and returned him in a quick flash of light.
L..le..let's see how you do against my Zubat though! Go! He said once he was able to get the word out in a flurry of words and motions a Bat now hovered in the air moving sporadically as though his wings did nothing but really hold his body in the air. The youngster tried to show a air of confidence but quickly shivered again and held his arms close to his body trying to keep himself warm. He knew he should have listened to his momma when he left the house that day but he insisted he would be fine. Brrrr.
vs. Youngster Albert
Rattata was Defeated! Booker has gained 2 levels and is now Level 14! Albert sent out Zubat (lv. 11). Do you stay with Booker or switch Pokemon?

It was done; well the first round was. The rattata fell unconscious and lillipup was the victor. The ball of fur raced over to be pet, Damien obliging happily before directing Booker to get ready for another go. The zubat entered the field, fluttering rapidly and not without a shiver itself if he wasn't mistaken. Poor flying type. It wasn't quite winter but it was nigh. The Youngster looked like his adrenaline was wearing off as well and without that distraction flowing through his body the cool air was getting to him.
[break] [break]
Damien nodded ever so slightly to himself as he decided on how he was going to handle the zubat. "I think we're going to surprise you," the ranger called back playfully. His lips were curled into a soft grin. The younger boy, as fun as battles were and valuable the experience, needed to get to a warm place before his limbs went numb. As such, it seemed the best idea to finish this up quickly but [hopefully] not in a disappointing fashion.

vs Youngster Albert__________________________________
The youngster perked up at Damien's hint of surprising the pair. He hadn't anticipated that his own Rattata would fall so easily, that was already surprising in itself. The duo had a good Pokemon and Trainer relationship, their teamwork was second to none, especially when he would face other students at the local Pokemon Academy. But Damien had stood his ground and attacked with an assault of biting, overpowering his friend in the end. Now, he had sent forth his second partner, a fairly new addition; a Zubat. Flapping its wings, the fanged bat flapped furiously in the air, waiting patiently for an order from Albert. "Another s-s-surprise?" The boy questioned with a gentle smile, "B-Bring it on!" With a swift nod of his head, the youngster had a plan of his own too, hidden somewhere up his sleeve.
But the aspiring ranger had a hidden trick of his own and with a simple order, the Lillipup knew exactly what to do. A frosty breeze swirling around his fangs, the energetic pup pranced forward and with a mighty leap, aimed straight for the flying Zubat. His jaw wrapping around his opponent, the sound of cracking ice pierced the air, a displeased shriek escaping the parted maw of the bat. The Pokemon's wings beating much slower as it drooped tiredly to the ground, it miraculously grabbed onto its final shred of energy, much like how Albert's Rattata had done previously. Releasing a very obvious sigh of relief, the boy chipped in, "G-Good job Zubat! Now use S-S-Supersonic!" Despite its lack of energy, the Pokemon managed to emit a high pitch sound, which pulsated within the very mind of Booker, causing him to fall into a state of confusion.

Once again Albert's pokémon turned out to not be so easily defeated. The poor little zubat struggled back into the sky after a devastating bite from Booker and still had enough wits about it to send forth a shrieking noise that rang through everyone's ears. Damien would never get used to that bellowing cry. Even slapping his hands over his ears to muffle it it was still a disconcerting noise, and poor Booker had taken more than the brunt of it. The pup's sensitive hearing picking up on the underlying tones easily, allowing the disorienting effect to settle in.
[break] [break]
This was always a bit difficult to deal with. Damien was never quite sure how to approach it but he knew remaining quiet was the worst option. Booker, wide eyed and ears down, wobbled uncertainly on the field. There were a few times he caught the wag of his stubby tail and looked like he was about ready to bite it. That wouldn't be any good. "Uh, uhm," Damien stuttered a second before finding the words, "Booker, Tackle that blue bat." It wasn't exactly how he wanted to say it, his mind fluttering around. Hopefully it was simple enough that the lillipup was able to work through the confusion.

vs Youngster Albert__________________________________
As the confusion began to settle in, the wide eyed, energetic pup began to question his surroundings a bit more than usual. Where was he, why was he here and what was he doing? Movements would catch his attention from the corner of his eye, distracting him from his true purpose. Noticing this, Albert gave a cheery smile, his plan clearly working. "I-I-It may be harsh but this is an o-o-officially accepted strategy! I learnt about it in s-school." Rubbing the tip of his nose almost proudly, there was no need for him to get too excited. Even though Booker was confused, his Zubat wasn't in the best of shape. Barely hanging onto consciousness due to the previous attack, it was unlikely that the bat would last for much longer. "N-Now! Get some e-e-energy back with a L-Leech life!" Pointing a finger forward, the Zubat let out a pained shriek of acknowledgement before swooping down toward Booker.
Unfortunately for the Zubat, the confusion had made the Lillipup that much more alert and at the slightest sign of movement, he pounced forward. Tackling his body surprisingly quickly, he struck the unsuspecting Zubat and ended the battle with a flick of his tail. Standing wide mouthed, Albert slouched forward with a sigh before lifting up a Pokeball and withdrawing his fainted friend. "G-Good work!" He congratulated to Damien, "I thought for s-s-sure I could turn that battle around. B-But you got the best of me." Fidgeting about in his pocket, the boy brought out a small amount of money and handed it to Damien for his victory. "I-It was good to battle you. If we meet again, let's have a re-re-rematch!" Lifting a hand, the boy waved a farewell before dashing off towards the nearest Pokemon Centre.

"It was a good strategy," the ranger commented as the battle finished and his opponent began sifting through his pockets for spare change. "If we hadn't been so lucky a few leech life's and your zubat would have been back in the game." Damien accepted the reward money for winning the match with a warm smile. [break] "You bet! I look forward to it," he called after the youngster as the boy spun around and started darting away. Then a sudden thought hit him, "Oh! And thank you for the directions!" He wasn't certain if the young lad had heard him, but at least the late teen had made the effort.
[break] [break]
Just then Booker started being a rather unruly rascal. The pup jumped at the trainer with ramming speed, knocking the boy over in a start; the ranger unable to withhold the yelp that escaped him in surprise. Booker barked triumphantly, little paws pressing like pressure pins on the trainer's chest and stomach. Damien reached around to hold and lift the scruffy dog off of him so he was able to sit up. [break] "Good take down," he laughed, the pokémon responding with slobbery licks. In the next moment though a bright glow enveloped Booker. The widest smile overtook Damien's face as he watched the transformation leave a Herdier in the Lillipup's place. It seemed like just yesterday he'd added Booker to his team, and now he had evolved into his second form! A well of excitement boosted the ranger to his feet after much celebratory pets. With the energetic canine safely back in his pokéball Damien continued his way down the path.
[break] [break]
As he went he finally spotted the lake, fishers busy with their lines cast along the boardwalk. He stopped to consider. Down the steps to the wooden path? Or through the untamed grass straight south? His team still needed to train, so avoiding the more likely area for encounters would be the worst way to go for that. Before he went however, Damien did some rearranging. Up to this point Seraph had been wearing the experience share, and while it had been a great benefit he knew he had another that could use it a little more now that the cyndaquil had gained more experience from the device: Alexis. After the item had been moved the ranger made his way further down the path.

What a joyous day Pidgey was having. The skies were brisk from the frost down below, but the bird Pokemon had no cares. They were flying high and encountered many battles, all of which Pidgey won of course. Every Poke in Violet City new that Pidgey was number one at battling; it’s wingspan was stronger than all of the other Pidgeys and none of the flying Pokemon that it had encountered ever lasted very long in battle, or so that’s how it saw it. Yupp, you could say that this Pidgey was in the top percentage of all Pidgeys.
As the skies bristled and waved across it’s smooth feathers, Pidgey looked down and spotted a trainer. “What are this?!” Pidgey was so confused at this pupper. “It look like an Growlithe, but I do not know what it iz!” It swooped down for a better look but just then Damien called the dog back into its ball. Pidgey swooped back up, as to not be noticeable. Enchanted with this new Pokemon, the bird followed the trainer, wondering whether or not it should attack. Pidgey was about to go near the lake and hunt for some fish, but this seemed like a better use of time. It got lower and lower towards the trainer, waiting for the perfect time to strike. With an evil grin, the Pidgey began wildly circling the trainer, hoping that maybe another new Pokemon would come out and get studied.

The ranger had been rather busy with keeping track of where he was going through this wilder part of the route. The clear path was encroached by trees acting nearly as walls on either side and the grass was so tall with weed and flower it was easy to find an odd cranny or hole dug out by the wild inhabitants. If he wasn't careful he could end up with a sprained ankle.
[break] [break]
Eventually though the path began widening again, and that is when the slowly homing in pidgey blipped on Damien's radar. Turning his head up he saw it circle around. And then again... and again. A cold shiver trembled down his spine as he watched it. [break] "Something caught your eye?" he spoke to the bird, pondering just what it could have spotted on him to warrant such a behavior. He'd rather not have some bird flying around him like a vulture. It was uncomfortable. At least the thing hadn't dived in and attacked him unawares. Damien forcibly ignored thinking about just how long the avian had been eyeing him.
[break] [break]
Fingers fumbling to his belt he selected one of his partners. Maybe a fight would scare his skyborn stalker away. With a toss the pokéball opened up and out came Seraph. [break] "Ready for some sparring Seraph? We have a pidgey following us." The cyndaquil gave a nod and with a squeak he lit up his back and spotted his opponent. "Alright! Let's get started with an Ember."
