Ray and the gang arrived at Route 32, with Violet City just beyond the horizon. Since this was the first city on their journey with a gym, it was time to train up and possibly get a new Pokemon to add to the roster of friends. Ray's first course of action was to train some of his lower level Pokemon. As Skull Kid sniffed around for possible catches and Tails.EXE checked the surrounding mental energy for trainers willing to fight, Ray took the time to eat a Strange Cookie he had gotten as a Halloween treat this year back at Cherrygrove while sitting on a hill overlooking both Route 34 and Violet City.
"This your moment, Ray Jafari," he said to himself, "After you beat this gym, you'll be a man."

Ray had reached Route 32, the grassy plains which spread around the outer perimeter of Violet City. Within the traditional clad town were many places to visit but the most important one for any trainer, was the very first Gym of the Johto region. By winning the badge, it was proof that he was strong enough to continue exploring onward, meeting stronger trainers and encountering rarer, wild Pokemon. It was the first step in becoming a great Pokemon trainer but there was no need to rush. The reason he was searching around in the tall grass was to find more opponents to battle, strengthening his own team up to make his victory even more meaningful. With Skull Kid by his side, the duo searched for opponents but the cookie that Ray began to munch on might've attracted something more than he had bargained for.
A mad rustling of a nearby bush was obvious enough to draw in his attention and the Pokemon that emerged, even more so. Incredibly rare and practically unheard of around these parts, a spooky spirit which wore the helm of a tree trunk emerged, it's pair of glowing, red eyes staring directly to the hand of Ray. It had been attracted by the succulent scent but it had already been devoured by this human! Sniffling somewhat, the Pokemon known as Phantump looked saddened before floating hurriedly towards Ray and Skull Kid with a more dangerous glint to it's eye. It was angry that it couldn't eat the thing which smelt so sweet, thus, it was going to take it's anger out on the human!
The Strange Cookie has attracted the attention of a wild Phantump (Level 9)! Please select a Pokemon to use in battle!

As the wild Phantump appeared, Ray thought it was a hallucination made from whatever strange mixture of ingredients the cookie was composed of.
"Sweet Aed!!!" he exclaimed, "What's in this stuff and where can I get it?"
"Uh, Ray," Tails.EXE communicated via telepathy, "I think that's a Pokemon."
"Oh," Ray said, realizing what was going on, "In that case, let's get Rosalina out here for some training."
Summoning the Alomomola from its Pokeball, Ray began the battle while Skull Kid pointed at the Phantump like a dog. Apparently, he had just noticed what was going on and thought Ray hadn't noticed the living log before them.
"OK, Rosalina" Ray began, "Use Pound."

Disappointed with the lack of cookies, the unusual Pokemon known as Phantump had decided to stick around to battle Ray and his team. A dark spirit with a part of a tree trunk as a mask or helmet, it was certainly a rare sight, so much so that the trainer almost didn't believe what he was seeing! Atleast his trusty Abra was there to shake him back into reality. With a flick of his wrist, he sent forward his choice of Pokemon, an Alomomola. Only, his order to attack probably wouldn't go the way he had hoped. Rosalina wouldn't be able to do much training against this particular ghostly foe. Moving forward, the pink fish made an arc of a jump, aiming straight for her foe with her mighty fins. Only, she found herself crashing into the ground, rather than hitting her opponent. Fading into nothing before reappearing in front of Rosalina once more, the Pokemon appeared to be ghost type, making her attack useless! Letting out a sudden, high pitch shriek which made the Alomomola jump up in surprise, the Pokemon floated back toward Ray, feeling as if she hadn't really accomplished anything here.
Phantump: | Level 9 | Health: 100% ( 29/29 HP) Status: Normal Phantump used Astonish!
VS
Rosalina: | Level 7 | Health: 86% (36/42 HP) Status: Normal Rosalina used Pound! It doesn't affect Phantump...

Ray chuckled awkwardly at the miscalculation in his choice of Pokemon.
"Sorry about that, Rosalina," he said, motioning the Pokemon to retreat, "Tails.EXE, I'd say this is more your forte. Use Psychic."
Meanwhile, Skull Kid began to cheer battle strategies to Ray. However, being a Squirtle, Ray couldn't understand a word Skull Kid said. Hopefully, Tails.EXE could do some damage on the ghost log and Ray could catch himself a brand new Pokemon.

Catching the trainer by surprise, Ray's miscalculation had led the hungry Phantump to have a head start in the damage department but things were about to take a sudden turn. Realising his mistake, the trainer was quick to fix his errors and sent forward his trusty Abra to continue on with the battle. Only, when faced with it's new opponent, the Phantump shivered in fear. As if it were able to sense the powerful attack that Tails.EXE knew, the thought of battling such a foe spooked the ghost. Floating from side to side as if trying to consider every possibility, in the end, it didn't seem like the wild Pokemon wanted to battle anymore. Crying out in hopes of the Abra being able to understand what it was saying, the ghoul called and cooed about surrendering peacefully. But that wasn't all. Rather than fleeing, the Phantump still hoped that the trainer had food, it was the strange cookie that had attracted it to him, after all. Maybe if it travelled with the trainer, it would find another delicious cookie, or something far tastier! There was only one way to find out and it wasn't as if Ray wasn't strong. Convincing itself that it would be safe with Ray, the Phantump floated towards the human. It became very clear that the Pokemon wanted to join him!

Ray's heart filled with sympathy when the Phantump surrendered out of fear. The little guy was now defenseless. Fortunately for it, Ray always up for pacifism when nessicary. "Don't worry, little guy," he said, hugging the haunted log, "you can come with me." Skull Kid and Tails.EXE were confused, but were also glad to see Ray make a new friend. Spinarak watched carefully from a nearby tree as the Phantump was lured into the trainer’s grasp with a simple cookie! How foolish this foreign Pokemon was, didn’t they realize how simple this trap was?! Perhaps not, seeing as how easily the Phantump surrendered. The bug Pokemon wondered why the ghost was so enticed by this stupid sugar cookie, what made it so special?! Spinarak had decided to investigate more thoroughly in the matter, what was all of the hype about? It descended from a long web, high up in the old Sycamore tree where it had lived its whole life. The chilly weather was certainly enough to make a Pokemon’s skin start to shiver, so the spider thought it was best to make this investigation as quick as possible. Just as it was lowering its body, the web broke and Spinarak fell several feet, right onto Ray’s head. Spinarak ( level 10) would like to battle!

As Ray cuddles his new ghostly pal, he felt something strange plop on his head. Looking up, he hastily shooed the Pokémon off his head.
"Ech!!!!" Ray exclaimed, not liking the feeling of a spider in his hair, "Creepy bug."
After realizing the situation, Ray sent out his Spinda to continue the fight.
"Pirate," he said, "give this creep the old one-two Tackle."

The weather around Violet was quite nice, much like the climate in New Bark, Violet featured an array of blossoming flowers. No wonder Spinarak lived in this area, it was certainly beautiful, especially for a bug or grass type Pokemon. Perhaps the meadows on the routes are what attracted the bugs in the first place.
Pirate was certainly ready for battle, he went in for a tackle attack. His tangled feet made it quite hard to do anything with precision and accuracy but somehow he mustered up enough concentration to land a hit! Spinarak retaliated with a poison sting, a classic move for many toxic Pokemon. Although a common move, poison sting was not very effective. Battle Weather: Clear Spinarak | Level 10 | Insomnia | No hold Item HP: 57% (17/29) Status: Normal Used Poison Sting! VS
Pirate | Level 9 | Tangled Feet | No hold Item HP: 89% (31/35) Status: Normal Used Tackle!

Of all the types of Pokémon out there, Bug was Ray's least favorite. The little creatures were so gross and creepy looking. Not to mention the feeling of touching one just left him uncomfortable. No way in the Inifinite Layers of Abyss was he gonna let one touch his head and get away with it. Besides, exp doesn't always require being nice.
"Alright Pirate," he said, "switch out for Xion. Xion, take this sucker out with Astonish."

No doubt that Spinaraks were quite the mischieveous little buggers at times. They were known to eat Cutiefly, a Pokemon known for its purity in a far off island, and its evolution Ariados is quite the skilled ninja. Ray should definitely watch his step with this bug Pokemon, many Pokemon have fallen into its trap! At least the weather was nice, which was probably another reason this little bug Pokemon was out and about.
The spider seemed hesitant to get to close to foe, worrying that one wrong move could mean the end! All of the sudden the a ghosty tree thingy came out, Spinarak leaped towards the new foe and gave it a hasty poison sting. Xion retaliated with an astonish attack, but sadly Spinarak didn’t flinch, in return however it gave Xion another poison sting attack! Battle Weather: Clear Spinarak | Level 10 | Insomnia | No hold Item HP: 34% (10/29) Status: Normal Used Poison Sting x2! VS
Xion | Level 9 | Natural Cure | No hold Item HP: 66% (19/29) Status: Normal Used Astonish! ((Mod note: you can switch out a Pokemon and then have the new Pokemon still use a move. In short: you haven't depleted your running shoes for this battle yet ))

Ray was starting to get bored of this fight. He had better things to do then beat up a bug. However, exp was exp and some of his Pokémon needed proper training if they were gonna take on gyms.
"Alright, Xion," he said, not really invested enough for his usual passionate dramatics, "just use Confuse Ray and try to use Astonish while he's distracted."
Yes it was a bit underhanded to use two moves in one turn, but it's wasn't like wild Pokémon followed rules when it came to battles.

Ray was just about to give the command to finish the Spider Pokémon off when Skull Kid tugged at his pants with puppy eyes to express his desire to deliver the final blow.
"Alright, alright," he said, "Xion, switch out for Skull Kid here."
Skull Kid pulled out some sunglasses from Ray's pack and excitedly rushed to the battle field.
"Alright, Skull Kid," Ray said, rolling his eyes, "Use Bubble so we can get on with our adventure."
