Damien had only been in Goldrenrod a few days and it was already becoming overwhelming just how huge it was. More than once he'd found himself lost in the labyrinth, never knowing when to expect a dead end or how to tell some of the allies from the less important streets. There was a foul smell that wafted up from the underground too, mostly at night. It reminded him a bit of the stank that plagued Cherrygrove when the plant had been meddled with. The ranger hadn't yet braved the Tunnel or any of the special sub-transit routes for this reason.
Instead he managed to find a wonderfully peaceful area protected from the rest of Goldenrod's industrialization: the National Park. Boy was it a fresh of breath air. Luckier yet, he'd managed to find it when a special event was being advertised. Seeing the familiar youthful face of Bugsy brought a smile to his face. He didn't even really have to think about it. While he wasn't much of a bug type fan himself he knew Riley was, and the Azalea-raised-boy held a certain appreciation for the little critters. Being that it was mentioned there were really rare ones to be found if one partook how could he say no?

When the day came his fingers were tingling with excitement. Damien arrived with only Bearithusa in his arsenal, and she too was excited to get to stretch her legs and explore a bit. He was admittedly a little worried considering her typing versus the wild pokémon they'd be facing in this event but she had been on very good behavior this last while so he felt a little reward was in order. Just hopefully she enjoyed herself.

As the start was declared Damien released the snover and ended up following her into the tall grass as she immediately bee-lined into the park. "Take it easy Bear, we don't want to scare all the little guys into attacking you. We want to try and find the bigger guys; got it?" The frost tree simply whistled and continued trampling through the tall grass.

Sure enough the excitable snover managed to rustle up some attention. Damien eyed the white form between the blades of green, picking up enough detail for a spark of recognition. "Oh wow, a Nincada!" he whispered with cheer. They weren't a common sight even around Ilex forest. Not exactly the rarest of bugs considering that Damien had seen them before, but they were definitely a prize. Bearithusa clapped her bushy hands together, raring to get going, but Damien wanted to get a slightly better look first. [break] [break]
Poking his head closer he managed to get a good look next to the frosty tree. While indeed it was a nincada it looked a little runty; and frightened. Bear's enthusiasm and unfamiliar form had the poor thing shaking, laying as close to the ground as it could as if that would help her forget it existed and move along. Once the wild pokémon had spotted Damien however that hope had gone out the window. It knew what to expect of the typical trainer. [break] "Hmmm, Bear. You might be too strong to play with this little guy but... It's a really good find girl." The snover was almost disappointed but the praise at the end brought another whir of cooing noise from her hidden lips. "Let's just lull it to sleep and try to capture alright? Time to sing your song, Grass Whistle!" [break] [break]
Bearithusa chimed, plucking a wad of grass and using that instead of her own bushy hands to do the deed.

As Bear found the perfect piece of grass, she played it wonderfully sending the Nincada to sleep before it could even attack. Poor little bug type.

"Perfect, well done Bear," Damien congratulated. He quickly turned his eyes away to shuffle through his items for the bundle of special balls he was instructed to use for the contest. The snover cooed cheerily, keeping up the soft buzzing of her grass call. She was quite enjoying just how thick and lush the blades were. It was a very well kept park. It was almost like he wasn't in a city at all. [break] [break]
Finding what he wanted, the ranger aimed and threw one of the sport balls at the nincada. If all went well he'd have a brand new pokémon and something he thought would be a decent capture for this special event. He'd have to look up later what it evolved into, as the vision of nuzleaf kept popping into his head but he was fairly certain that wasn't right.

The young man pumped his fist, quietly cheering at the successful capture. Bearithusa joined in the cheer, throwing her arms up with all the grass she'd pulled earlier flung into the air. Things were off to a great start for the pair. Now they just needed to keep it up. Time was ticking so the ranger placed the captured nincada in a special pocket and signaled for his snover to continue her trek through the swaying grass field. Damien took a moment to glance around, noting the grinning faces and other encounters that he could see nearby. There were so many different kinds of bug pokémon around he was actually amazed that no one seemed to be fighting the same one. Bugsy had outdone himself with this event. [break] [break]
He couldn't gawk too long at the range of rare pokémon he didn't recognize as Bearithusa was already gaining a decent distance from Damien. Noticing this he quickly gave chase, keeping an eye out for another bug.

Damien barely had any time to celebrate his victory before another bug type Pokemon made it's way towards him. This strange looking yellow and blue bug was a rare sight in the contest and even rarer in Johto. It was known as a Karrablast and as it's name suggested it was a very short tempered Pokemon. It would not shy away from a fight and as this particular one had never seen a Snover before it wanted to see just how tough the tree Pokemon was.

Bearithusa trilled as another kooky looking bug popped out of the veil of soft blades. Clapping her hands she waddled back a few paces so as to not get horned early on; this one looked tougher than the last. Damien managed to catch up to his snover just in time, staring in awe of the blue shelled pokémon. "What is that?" he half mumbled to no one in particular. With a swift motion his hands dug into his pocket and withdrew the handy upgraded dex that had been provided to him not long ago. He pressed the button to scan, allowing the device a second to parse the form of the wild bug, then flipped open the screen to glance the basic information. [break] [break]
"Karrablast huh? Sounds like a tough one Bear." The frost tree pffft in reply, rolling her eyes though her trainer could not see it from his angle. Damien could feel it though. A chuckle escaped him with a lace of embarrassment. Of course anyone could see this little bug was going to be a rough one. It almost looked like a mini heracross and those things were a beast. [break] [break]
The karrablast was getting a little anxious though, all the staring. It didn't quite like all of the things happening in the park and didn't quite understand what was going on. It also wasn't particularly interested in all the humans gawking about. There was something else in the stream of grasses that it wanted to find; a quarry of its own. But it would need to get through this ranger first. Karrablast huffed, Damien smiling in return. "Well I quite liked this nincada but... We are here for a contest and I know I can get those back in the forest." He paused for a moment, a light chill coursing through his veins as he remembered the unwelcome feeling from the shrine upon passing through the first time. Damien shook his head and got back into the game. "Let's see if our luck holds out. Bearithusa, another Grass Whistle! We want to try and take this guy in top condition if we can, so put it to sleep." [break] [break]
Another rustle of her bushy hands plucked an uncountable number of grass from the park grounds. She was more than happy to oblige the request, as normally Damien didn't want her to make noise. It may not have been the most exciting action around but she was just pleased to be out and about.

Bearithusa tried hard to sing Karrablast to sleep, but the little beetle was having none of it! Perhaps it had just finished its nap and wasn't tired? Who knows! Regardless, the Bug type fought back strongly enough to show that it was most certainly still alert and capable, slashing away with a Fury Cutter! The damage left Bearithusa looking less than enthused, for sure, but she was still more than in the match. So... Bearithusa again won the speed tie and tried her Grass Whistle again! Karrablast listened for all of 5 seconds before deciding that it still wasn't interested. It Leered unimpressedly (totally a word; shut up Chrome) at the Snover, letting her know just how "not good" that song was. Very "not good". Try again.

The snover snorted, a rush of air pushing through the tall grass in response. If she had easily visible lips one'd note they were pursed, skewed to the side. Instead the wild karrablast would just have the narrowing of her brow to go off of for her displeasure. Bear stamped the ground at the insult. Who could possible not like her lovely reed instrument? That buzzing choir of various pitches of which she had mastered into song. [break] "It's alright Bear..." the ranger began, noticing the intensity of her stance. She huffed again, tossing aside the playful stalks. If this bug wanted a song it was going to get one! [break] [break]
Smacking her hands together she made sure to lay the leafy threads just right. Putting them to her face she blew. It took a lot of effort for her not to just blare a high pitched squeal to agitate all around, instead retaining the will power to play an actual [hopefully] effective melody.

Karrablast seemed amused by Bearithusa's determination to successfully play a melody on with her grass stalks, giving in to its curiosity to watch. A mistake on its part, perhaps, but it didn't run into many Pokemon like Damien's Snover very often. Bearithusa's eyes closed as she focused completely on weaving a charming melody, the notes of this song finally melding together in a lovely harmony that had Karrablast closing its eyes to enjoy. Eyes that stayed closed as the little bug promptly fell asleep, a cute snore drifting free. Bearithusa stopped playing with a small noise of amusement, delighted to finally see GrassWhistle work for once.

Overjoyed and not above gloating, Bearithusa flung her hands into the air and gave a little dance. Shows what some bugs would know about music. Though, it did have the point that the snover was using an imperfect instrument on the first couple of tries. Putting her hands to her hips she nodded her head, chiming at her victory. [break] "Sshh, not too loud Bear. We need to keep this thing asleep." Her trainer's voice cut through her celebrations. Her hands moved to the general location of her mouth and she waddled back a few steps. Bearithusa figured Damien would appreciate the extra room as she figured she knew what was to follow her harmonious grass whistle. [break][break]
Ball in hand the ranger took aim and gave it a toss. The sport ball lobbed into the air like a poor baseball throw, but luckily the blue shelled bug didn't blend in all to well in the grass.

"Yes!" the boy cheered after the successful chime of the device. Bearithusa clapped her hands in the air, each slap sounding like a rustle of bush. Damien quickly skipped over to the newly captured pokémon and picked up the ball, soon afterward moving to bring out his previously captured pokémon. "Well Nincada, looks like you get to stay in the park." He released the still snoozing bug, its white shell striping against the tall grass obscuring it. Damien's fingers then went to the sport ball, deactivating the device and releasing the nincada back into the wild. [break][break]
Bearithusa trilled, waddling over to get a look at what was going on. Damien pat her head and signaled for her to be quiet. She covered her mouth with feigned surprise then skipped away. No doubt looking for another bug to encounter. The ranger smiled and backed off from the sleeping pokémon. It'd probably awaken soon. Hopefully. Allowing someone else a chance to get it. [break] [break]
He chuckled quietly to himself at the thought. Poor thing, it no doubt might be a tad confused when it first awakes and to immediately encounter another of the trainers partaking in the catching contest would prove a rather busy day for it. Maybe it'd get lucky and manage to scurry away unseen.
