The pidgey watched intently as Martin spoke and then let another pokemon out to face it, it preened its wing to hide its smug smile. So they found it too big of a challenge to the bulb and had to switch to keep up with it, it liked the sound of that. Oddend stared at the pidgey for quite some time and looked bored which irked the bird a bit, this might be a bigger challenge than it had tried before. Well, its tactic had worked well before, so why change something that was not broken? The bird dived and ran a wing over the ground, swiping up dust which covered the gulpin and stung in his eyes. "Come on! Show me what you can do, or are you falling asleep?" Pidgey egged Oddend in the hope of getting some reaction. It didn't seem to work as Oddend just kept staring and pidgey looked tired at it. "Really? If you don't want to give me a challenge, then why are you here?" Pidgey asked and then squared its shoulders. "Let me help you out of here, so your human send in something properly," it tried to tease the gulpin and whipped up a strong wind, with the hope of sending Oddend rolling back to Martin. To its chagrin it didn't work, Oddend was both to heavy and too much of a blob for a bit of wind moving him anywhere. "You gotta be kidding me!" Pidgey mumbled frustrated, if Oddend didn't budge then what? If the gulpin was just going to act like a punching back it would be better to just leave and find something else to do. It had had so high hopes for this battle. Pidgey squawked surprised and flapped its wings hard in a fruitless attempt to avoid the spray of acid that Oddend sen at it without warning. It spluttered and shivered as it burned its way through feathers to the skin, and it dumped down to the ground to take a dust bath in the hope that could take the edge of the sting. Martin Growth GardenerA slow smile was forming on Oddend's face as the Pidgey turned more and more agitated at his lack of response. Even if Martin had found a way to control his actions, it couldn't stop him from having fun on someone else' expense, and the Pidgey was just asking for it with all its mighty twittering. Oddend held back a chuckle and watched in eager anticipation to see the bird's reaction to his sudden attack. He wasn't disappointed. With immense glee he chortled at the Pidgey as it tried to clean itself off in the dust. Its expression was priceless. He was so caught up in the moment that he was already preparing to yawn at it for real, just to see what more funny faces it could make. Of course Martin put an immediate stop to that idea by calling him back. ~~ Blue was learning a great deal from watching Oddend's interaction, or rather lack thereof, with the Pidgey. One thing was Martin telling him not to mind the teasing, another was seeing the not caring part in action and the effect it had on their adversary. Of course, Oddend had the advantage of actual being stronger than the Pidgey, much stronger if you considered the total lack of movement caused by the gust thrown his way. Blue was impressed, and pondered if he would ever be able to stand his ground just as securely. However, even if he might not be able to do it physically, he could probably learn the mental part of it. He looked to Martin for the moment where he would be allowed back on the field. The trainer was watching the battle expertly, serious eyes turned on the task, and Blue was once again thrown by the stark difference between Martin and his earlier trainer. Then the eyes turned to Blue, they softened sligthly, and Martin gave an imperceptibly nod. Blue nodded back and readied himself to jump in as soon Oddend was out of the way. ~~ Feeling satisfied with the administrations of care he had given the Budew, Martin squinted more seriously at the battle to get a proper grasp on, when would be the optimal time to change Blue in once more. He considered the merit of letting Oddend lull the bird to sleep, but on the other hand he still wanted to end this quickly, and Oddend's attack should have softened the Pidgey well enough for Blue to take another shot at it. He checked that Blue was paying attention, and got ready to recall Oddend, while lowering his head closer to Blue to say. "As soon as you get out there, you drain it." The brave little Pidgey still had some fight left in it even as Martin refused to hold back against it. The avain Pokemon knew he was going to try something sneaky and whether it would be an attack or swapping Pokemon again Pidgey was ready to use its trickiest move again to try and counter whatever Martin was planning. As soon as he switched Pokemon Pidgey sprung into action kicking a cloud of sand at Blue before he could receive orders from his trainer. Even with its quick thinking however the bird knew it could not win with just sand alone. Pidgey then kicked up a powerful gust sending sand and leaves towards Bkue causing a decent amount of damage but not enough to stop the small Pokemon from launching its attack. The Mega Drain sped towards Pidgey seemingly on target to deal the knockout blow only to stop and fall straight down just inches from the flying type. Pidgey had reduced Blue's vision just enough to get lucky this time and avoid being knocked out. As lucky as it had gotten Pidgey was still in a heap of trouble. It had no way to recover and being outnunbered getting lucky misses like this was the only hope it had of making a comeback by now. Even as optimistic as it was the bird knew it was quite a longshot pick to win this battle as it could not afford to take any more damage. Martin Growth GardenerBlue jumped into action as fast as his stubby legs would move and happened to face the Pidgey's swirl of sand for a second time. At least this time he already knew the deal and wasn't quite as annoyed by the itchy feeling it created, but yet again it made it difficult to aim the planned attack; or dodge for that matter; and before he knew it he felt trapped in a vortex of scratching wind and leaves. It didn't push him around like before, but it still hurt, and since he was actually making an effort to not get bothered by the Pidgey's teasing, he also noticed the pain more. His anger grew despite himself. Blue firmly held on to the belief that the Pidgey would soon face the dust itself in the form of a properly placed drain attack, and launched it while focusing on keeping his mind as numbly straight as Oddend had done only moments ago. When he didn't feel the replenishing energy of his attack, his thought process stuttered and his heart fell. His moment to shine felt lost forever. What wouldn't Martin say, when he couldn't even get one single attack properly through to an easy target like that? ~~ Martin grit his teeth and had to actually put some effort into restraining an outward show of negative emotions. It wasn't like he was actually angry at the Budew for the failure, but he was getting real angry at the bird. Why the Pidgey line of birds insisted on drenching his poor grass types in sand attacks, whether wild or trained, was beyond him... not! It was a sound and truly annoying strategy, which Martin intended on finding a counter to at some point in the future if this kept up. For now though, he had to figure something else out, and the solution was actually pretty straightforward. "Blue, I'm going to have to apologise to you. You're not ending this fight as you wanted to, but I'm not risking your well-being any longer." He laid it on thick, sugar-coating his decision a good deal, while he fished out an empty Pokeball. He just wanted this to be over with, and he didn't want to wait another round praying the Mega drain would hit. He had better things to do with his life. "Just bear with me a moment, Blue. This Pidgey has spent its last day in the wild." and he let out a short laugh to release the tension of his suppressed emotions. He sure hoped the Budew didn't catch on to the note of vengefulness that last statement entailed. Wordcount: 433 (Ooc: Martin throws a Pokeball)

The feathery brown bird’s eyes studied the small bulbous plant carefully. It would scratch at the ground with its sharp talons, kicking up sand and debris behind it as though it were preparing for another attack. So they had only the two that the trainer was willing to face off with? And even these two rag-tag Pokemon couldn’t seem to handle the lonely Pidgey on its own, without consistently playing ‘You’re It’ with each other? Good. The Pidgey only wanted the toughest and bravest challengers to face off with. The Tiny Bird Pokemon would fan its dual hued, brown-and-cream colored wings out as far as it could stretch them on either side of its body. It would screech at the top of its lungs, giving out a loud chirp that both warned and challenged the Budew in one fell sweep. “You are not worthy. Prepare to meet your match!” It warned and bean charging as it rushed across the ground. Its wings began to flap, slowly lifting the bird up into the air. It would tuck its feet underneath its body as it prepared to soar up into the air, then dive back down after the small green bud. Then, with a flash of light, the Pokemon disappeared. A small red-and-white Pokeball fell to the ground with a quick snap. It would wriggle back and forth across the ground. The gusting winds that swept across the ground and shook the thick tree branches above and caused the tall green grasses to wave all about sporadically seemed to make the ball wriggle with a strong fervor on the ground. Though within a few minutes – minutes that might have felt like hours to some – the ball would ding one final time as the button glowed a bright red. Then the Pokeball would stop and turn silent as a successful capture had been made.

Martin Growth GardenerTrainer and Pokemon both waited with baited breaths as the Pokeball wiggled for an eternity on the ground. At least that was what Blue felt like. He was a bit bewildered at Martin's sudden change in tactic, especially since Martin had made such an effort to make it doable for Blue to actually have a shot at winning. His admittedly meagre battle experience with Jimmy had always been getting withdrawn or running away as soon the boy had worried about their health. Especially after that first time with a wild Pokemon breaking free of the ball and taking out its revenge immediately after. It seemed Martin knew something Jimmy hadn't though, because the ball finally clicked and Blue was no longer in danger of getting more hurt. He let that sink in for a bit. He decided the battle had been a valuable learning experience. Martin cared about him and his wishes, but understood to change things on a short notice if something wasn't working as intended. He wanted to be strong not just for himself, but Martin too. He wanted to prove that Martin's trust in him was valid. And he could be stronger he realised as the wish rooted itself in his tiny body. He welcomed the change with eagerness. ~~ Martin was in the process of picking up the Pokeball with the captured Pidgey, when light drew his attention to the still standing Budew. He hesitated a moment, then proceeded to pocket the Pidgey's ball slowly behind his back while watching the evolution happen carefully. He felt strange about it. Honestly, he hadn't known if his efforts to act like he cared would have worked. He hadn't really gotten the chance to practise on someone else, but evidently it did work, and the result was soon standing proudly in front of him. The strangeness in his chest refused to settle. Was he actually proud of this? Proud on behalf of Blue? Martin shoved the thought aside, refusing to look at it any further. He hadn't had time to decide how much he wanted to change his behaviour when the evolution happened, but he found it prudent to let any change on his part happen slowly, so went with a soft smile to the Roselia. "Look at you, Blue. You are turning into a fine rose with the sharpest of thorns" At least the compliment was sincere. It was the thorns of the Roselia he would need in the future, and he saw in its eyes that it was happy for this kind of praise. He recalled it on that note, and spend a moment taking stock of the situation. The hefty wind was settling down, but it had been pulling heavy clouds with it, and as Martin felt the first drops of rain drum against his clothes, he decided to dawdle no longer. He was finally far enough down route 32 that the Union cave had gotten in sight. He ran for its cover, and managed to make it without further interruptions. His clothes was halfway waterproof, and he shook the droplets off, so they couldn't get time to seep into the fabric. That done he began investigating the inside area, looking for the path that would be leading through to the next town. Wordcount: 546 (Ooc: Blue evolves and learns Poison Sting instead of Stun Spore, and Magical Leaf instead of Water Sport. Pidgey is send blank to Extras in Martin's box.)

The rain hammered on the greenery outside but Martin was safe and dry inside. If he didn't like cold rain, perhaps he would need to find a solution for when his gardening work required him to work even during weather like this? He probably couldn't hope for sunshine and perfect temperatures every time he had work to do, unless he began to use Sunny Day perhaps? The tunnel was dark but rather easy to navigate, the main tunnel had been made wider and smoothened to make the trip easier as it was well used for travelers between Azalea and Violet. Azaleas only other way was through Ilex and that always was overgrown and hard to navigate so most inhabitants preferred to visit Violet if they needed a bigger city than their own. Not long in lamps was mounted on the wall regularly which didn't remove the gloom and the darkness of the tunnel but at least made it possible to see without having to use Flash or a flashlight. Martin's footsteps echoed through the tunnel and for a bit that was all he heard, he passed a few side tunnels but they were dark and clearly not marked as the main one he followed so unless he wanted to explore the lit one was certainly going to be the fastest way to Azalea. An echo of a whispering voice carried through the tunnel, went quiet and then held a long tune, slowly raising in strength although it never became loud. A twist in the tunnel and the maker was revealed, it was a whismur who was using the echo to work on its voice. "Muuuuuuuur," it called out softly, trying to make it louder than a whisper, before falling silent and listening with its ears twitching as the echo traveled down the tunnel and back again. It was standing at the entrance to one of the dark side tunnels, so there might be a risk of it trying to escape that way if scared, but for now it hadn't noticed Martin. Whismur [lvl 9] is working on its voice with the help of the tunnel's echo. Shiny: tFZccY9L1-421-42

Martin Growth GardenerMartin was pleasantly surprised to find what looked like a well travelled path lit with just the needed amount of light to see where one was going. True, it was rugged and shadowy; certainly no well lit city street; but with Violet's Dark Cave in mind it was pure luxury. Martin spend a moment more considering what he actually wanted to do. His plans had changed so much from when he got up this morning, that he could barely remember what his initial idea for the day had been. A minor scouting mission turned into an improvised, hurried travel to the next town. Martin worked his shoulders and started walking. Here was no plants to distract him from the course, and luckily no littering either. Not wanting to get surprised however, Martin proceeded with caution. Maybe he would explore some of the darker side tunnels another day, but for now he just made sure that he could pass them by uninterrupted, and his timing seemed to be good. Besides the noise of his own steps, not much else drew attention to itself. At least for a while. The echo changed partway in and Martin halted for a moment to listen closely. A singing voice? He wasn't certain. Martin started walking again, considerable slower this time. He couldn't tell if it was a human or Pokemon, but he preferred to discover whoever it was first, before they discovered him. Rounding the twist of the tunnel, Martin felt like the view of the pink normal type shouldn't have surprised him. The whispering critters had seemed to replicate in masses in the one cave he had been through in Kalos. Maybe they were the Bunnelbys of the caves here. Martin used a precious second deciding how to go about the thing. He couldn't be certain it would be scared off at his lone approach, and he hated being caught off guard. He might as well just be safe and attack it, before it got the chance, and he had just the Pokemon for the job. He picked Phyllis' Pokeball and went into action in a few fluid motions, stepping ahead while letting Phyllis out in front, and giving a quiet order to the Pancham as soon as the light dissipated. "Karate Chop, Phyllis, and make it quick." ~ Phyllis hadn't had a work out in forever. She was greatly annoyed at that fact. She could hardly consider being thrown directly into a battle first thing a work out though. Especially when the opponent looked so weak. With a sincere hope that Martin would let her stay around to actually work up a sweat if she did as told, Phyllis wasted no time in readying her fists for the attack. The seemingly blind pink rabbit listened closely to the sounds of the cave as it worked on its voice. It’s overly large pick ears with bright yellow tips shivered and twitched on the top of its head. It lifted one ear after the other with a half-tilt so that they were still curved around its had and covered the holes in the sides of its head where the Whismur truly listened to sounds. The ears were a protective barrier, then, protecting the wild Pokemon from the loud sounds and booming ruckus of the cave’s natural and active lifestyle of its happy residents. The pink rabbit could hear the sounds of Pokemon that moved underneath the earth when it listened carefully. Onix buried underneath the cave’s floor, far away from the sights and sounds of the worldly inhabitants, burrowed deep underneath the ground. Small moles also maneuvered underfoot, lost to the Whismur or the lad as they lay too far below the topmost layer of the cave’s floor. Then another sound. There were other Whismur that bounced and chattered away far off down the cave’s intricate tunnels and maze-like paths, but something more. It approached the Whismur, and before the Pokemon had the time to react, it had arrived before the pink rabbit and unleashed the furious fists of a black bear with a white head and white cotton-puff tail. The pink rabbit dropped its large pink ears over the holes in the sides of its head and widened its cross-shaped and nearly nonexistent eyes. The rabbit started jumping and hopping off down the path and as it tried to hurry away and find safety. It was much too late, however. The Pancham ran up to the pink rabbit and karate chopped it with its strong hands, knocking the pink normal type rabbit out and dropping it to the ground. Martin Growth GardenerPhyllis made efficient work of Martin's order, and he was very satisfied when the pink thing fell to the floor without any resistance. He kept his face neutral however, as he studied the Pancham in the aftermath. The small bear was looking at him somewhat expectantly, and Martin wasn't sure what exactly it was hoping for. "Good enough" he settled on saying, since it had done just as he had asked. "Now," he continued as he looked ahead once more and clipped Phyllis pokeball back in place. "We just have to get out of here. You might as well stick around to keep anymore wannabe threats at bay." Martin resumed walking, fully expecting Phyllis to keep up with his stride. ~ Since Martin wasn't looking anymore, he never saw the satisfied smirk settling on Phyllis' face, when he allowed her to stay out. He was walking fast for her small form, but that was just another excuse to work hard, and she did. She kept two steps behind him, and worked through a hitting and running routine while they walked. She didn't trust Martin to let her stay out for long, so she had to work with what she got. Now if only they would meet a real challenge for her to test herself against... ~ Martin walked and listened to the surroundings, but other than faraway sounds of indefinable nature, and the rustle of movement from Phyllis behind him, he didn't hear much else. He doubted it was ever this easy to travel through the cave, but maybe the wildlife had learned to steer clear of the lit path, and trainers who wanted more excitement on their journey was down in the darker parts too. Or maybe Martin had just chosen a good time for being in a hurry. Whatever the case it couldn't have been much more than half an hour later that Martin spotted the brighter greyness of inartificial light from the cave exit, and a few minutes later he was looking out on a new world and presumable the road to Azalea. It wasn't raining on this side of the mountain, but unfortunately that was the only thing Martin could say about it. The fog that covered the outside world on this side made for a very subdued and blurry world. Martin made sure to stay on the downtrodden path. If he remembered the map correctly the city should be very close by, and he just wanted to check in at the Pokecenter and crash in for the night. He could always go exploring another day, and maybe the fog would have lifted by then. ENDWordcount: 437 (Ooc: Phyllis learns Low Sweep and forgets Karate Chop)
