It was time. Bishop had changed out his team, got his running shoes and gotten fresh supplies. It was time to hit the road and make his way to Violet City so he could face Falkner. He paused at the edge of Chrerrygrove and inhaled deeply of the nice spring air. It was a good day to be traveling.
As was his custom Bishop poked around in the tall grass as he went. His team was strong enough already to beat the Bird Master at the gym but every little bit helped. Besides, there were still a few pokemon on his wish list that called the area home. And he thought he heard something about a swarm on the radio. Now that could prove interesting....
(Ooc: Traveling ever onwards. Please update my party to include my Charmeleon, Pikachu, Swinub, Mankey, Mudbray and Torchic. Sableye and Swablu will go back to the box for the time being. Thank you very much. )

It was a beautiful day to say the least. All manner of people and pokémon were out and about enjoying the summer weather. Soaking in the sun by the pond, frolicking in patches of flowers, or simply just moving along their own agendas between cities. A gentle breeze carried along just a touch of cool air to keep the sun's warmth from becoming overwhelming between patches of cloud trailing along overhead. But it wasn't just clouds gliding about. Amidst all the other distant noises of summer fun there was one that was getting a bit closer. A squeaky hum with little pips now and then. It was a gentle voice. Small. And seemed to be on level with Bishop. If the young lad would turn to look he'd spot a pink ball floating along the slight breeze in a slow spin; currently facing backwards from the direction it was moving. A hoppip is on a crash course with Bishop's head! What will he do? SZTTD|FM1-421-42

His eyes widened in surprise for a second to see the pink ball about to hit him in the face. Ducking quickly he tried to side step it and by instinct reached for a pokeball. Pressing the button on it he released one of his newest friends; a Torchic by the name of Jolyne. He had obtained her in a trade recently and they hadn't gotten to know each other very well yet....but that was part of the purpose of taking her out with him now.
She hopped about for a moment, taking stock of the situation. Bishop had been told she liked to fight and right this moment the little chick was trying her best to look fierce and ready to rumble. A part of him wanted to just let the Hoppip float on by if it wasn't going to start any trouble. He didn't particularly want to capture it but his newest friend sure wanted to fight. Maybe she wanted a chance to prove herself? If so he really couldn't deny her.
"Jolyne, use your Ember attack!

The hoppip floated closely past Bishop and when they got eye contact it would grin delighted to him. "Piiip" it greeted and slowly drifted around so it had the back to Bishop and his doing. To the hoppip this was a wonderful day and it drifted on without a care in the world, that was until the torchic sprayed it with embers. Its piip this time was much more distressed and full of pain. Its leafy wings began to spin faster and it looked like they absorbed sunlight and grew in size, the burn marks on the skin slowly began to fade. Had they been more equal the hoppip's synthesis would have been a real challenge and could easily have helped it win the battle, but here it made no difference. Jolyne spat another mouthful at the flying grass type and it dropped from the sky like a stone. A few confused sounds came from it while it was half unconscious, it would make no attempt to avoid capture, it wouldn't be able to. Roll for hoppips lvl 2tdxlH4E5-10Jolyne wins with ease and grows 2 lvl to lvl 14! She can learn Peck if she forgets another move. She also gains +1 Happiness. Bishop blinked once and the fight was over. Now, in the aftermath, he felt a little bad about it. He wasn't certain that the Hoppip was being aggressive. Maybe it was just overly friendly. Well, it was done now one way or the other.
"You did good Jolyne," he said, kneeling down to praise his little friend. She was hopping about in excitement and seemed to be looking for something else to fight. Bishop couldn't help but be pleased by her enthusiasm. Then he turned to the unconcious Hoppip. "As for you I do believe that we should see to your wounds and find you a good home. Least I can do after setting you on fire I suppose.
He wasn't sure if the little grass type could hear or understand him but it did seem to be the friendly sort. Bishop probably wouldn't train it to fight but there were a lot of trainers out there looking for just such a pokemon. He would try to find it a good home. Producing a pokeball he completed the capture before recalling Jolyne.
Regarding the road for a moment he took a moment to stretch and then adjusted his cap. It was still a long walk to the next city.
(Let Jolyne forget Focus Energy and learn Peck. Bishop will go ahead & capture Hoppip, sending it to my pc.)

The smell of fire was something that signaled to all around that a trainer was nearby. For most it was simply the tail fire of the popular starter given away at the lab. Even the slightest hint of smoke often made the smaller pokémon hide away in their nests and holes until the threat passed but... there were always the curious ones. Or the ones that thought they had something to prove. There were no better opponents than trainer pokémon. A bush up ahead of Bishop's chosen path along the route would rustle. Despite how careful it wanted to be, so sneaky, the bulk and sluggishness of its body constantly betrayed what it wanted to be. It still had its camouflage among the greenery, but the bug didn't want to hide. With its surprise entrance ruined Caterpie decided to slump out of the bush and present itself properly to the young lad traversing route 30. A proper challenge. Honorable, maybe, but certainly put the little caterpillar at a large disadvantage it didn't like. How would it get strong if it was continually made the underdog? It'd witnessed the swift brutality laid out by the torchic versus a simple passerby. But... the trainer had caught the hoppip despite its pitiful resistance. Maybe... Just maybe... A caterpie (LV 5) is challenging Bishop! IpRTgU7t1-421-42

He had only walked a short distance before the Caterpie popped out of the underbrush. Bishop paused for a moment, studying the little bug and a smile came slowly to his face. This was one fierce little bug he thought, all full of spit and vinegar as the old saying goes. He didn't look like much at the moment but the young trainer could see the potential there. This one would be quite the little battler with a little more experience.
"So you want to fight eh?" he asked, giving his opponent an appreciative grin. "Alright then, let's do this. Pug, I choose you!"
With that he released his shiny Mankey from the pokeball. Pug needed more experience and seeing how much spirit the Caterpie was showing he didn't feel right to just scorch it with his fire types. No, he would let it be a real battle without major type advantages.
"Pug, use your Low Kick then Karate Chop. Soften this little guy up so we can catch him."
(sorry for the brevity. RL only giving me a minute or three to post this morning. Using running shoes to double up attacks.)

The little bug gotta ready as it heard Bishop accept its challenge, it slightly wiggled side to side as it tried to choose an attack. It wondered if Strong shot was a good idea or if they should just keep tackling the Pokemon. They didn't get decide as they noticed the Mankey coming straight for them. They decided the Mankey was too quick for String shot to be useful. That left one option, the Caterpie charged for the Mankey the best it could with its body. Pug was not having any of it, he rushed forward giving the bug a quick low kick. The bug flew back a bit but brushed it off wanting to get a tackle in quickly before the Mankey attacked again. It charged again, Pug braising himself as the bug hit into his stomach. The bug landed down in front of Pug who took the opportunity to chop his hand down onto the head of the bug. The Caterpie was squashed a bit as they winced in pain. They couldn't stop now, they had to keep going, they couldn't let themselves fail like this. The bug forced themselves back up mastering whatever strength they still had. Using that strength to jump once more battering into Pug's stomach again. The Caterpie landed safely a bit further back this time, taking the chance to catch their breath before the next attacks started. "Little bug, I think we are going to get along just fine," Bishop said, a tone of admiration in his voice. Normally he wouldn't have looked twice at a Caterpie. It wasn't the sort of pokemon he would imagine himself training. Oh he might have captured it to trade to another trainer or give as a gift to someone but that was about the extent of it
This little Caterpie though had spunk. It had a fighting spirit all out of bounds when considering it's species and level. That was the sort of thing the young man could get behind. In fact he thought he could train this fellow up to be one heck of a powerful Butterfree in time. Now all he had to do was close the deal and capture it.
"Pug, use Low Kick!"
Even as he gave the order Bishop was maneuvering for a better angle and reaching for a pokeball. One more hit and Caterpie should be weakened enough for an easy capture. Readying the ball he prepared to throw it the second his Mankey knocked it off balance.
"Come on little fella, just a bit more and you can be part of our big happy family!"

If caterpie was going to manage any kind of advantage it needed to make use of its only way to do so: speed control. It was certain if it could just land a hit first it would really knock the fighter out of its groove and maybe give Caterpie the edge to win this. It was a long shot, especially since Pug was still free to move as he pleased. The mankey swooped in and sliced a leg out along the ground. The bug didn't have any legs to knock out from under it, but it was still a mildly unpleasant experience to be kicked. Caterpie took the opportunity to get a good set of sticky string wrapped all around Pug's fur as he completed his spin to retreat to Bishop.

The more he saw of this little bug the more Bishop liked him. And that was not to mention the spirit shown by Pug. He was very fond of pokemon with a strong fighting spirit and these two both showed that and a whole lot more. Now he was even more determined to catch the Caterpie...and it was becoming obvious he would have to knock it out first.
"Pug, use your Karate Chop. Keep using it till Caterpie can't fight anymore so I can capture it!"
Nothing motivated Pug more than clear directives and the chance to show off in a fight. It was so close now! He could capture the little bug and give his Mankey the chance to finish a winnable fight. At this point it was all coming together and Bishop readied a pokeball for just the right moment.

Tackle! Pug [Anger Point]: -2 Spd ... Used Low Kick! The Caterpie nodded to itself slightly knowing that the monkey thing couldn't get hits in so quick. That should give it enough time to strike first right? Caterpie thought so and as the Mankey came in to give it another low kick the caterpie went in for a tackle. The Caterpie knew he was getting low and maybe he should just give up, just let the monkey thing beat it. However, that just wasn't them, they wasn't a scared little bug that couldn't defend itself. The Caterpie wanted to show this even now, so jumped up with everything it had and bashed into Pug's belly. Pug braised a little but was able to avoid skidding back, while it didn't seem to do much Pug didn't look as well as when his first started the battle. That meant something to the bug even't if it didn't to others. With the tackle done the Caterpie landed back down, Pug not hesitating to give it another low kick. This time the Caterpie went flying, hitting a tree before falling to the ground. The caterpie looked hurt, even maybe about to faint. But the caterpie, wiggled and wiggled and wiggled, it couldn't just faint now. It felt a little bit more strength, that was even for the bug to try and get up. It was slow but with each try the Caterpie slowly got up. Once it was back on it's 'feet' the bug looked towards Pug. It had a serious face, even though if Pug had put a little bit more power, the Caterpie could have fainted. This was one special bug indeed. Bishop readied a great ball and waited patiently for his moment. Caterpie was no quitter, that much was for sure. Even as beat up as he was the feisty little bug was still trying to win. With a little bit of training he would become truly powerful.
When the little bug made it to his feet and squared up as if to attack Pug again Bishop made his move. Taking careful aim he threw the great ball with all his might. Hopefully that would work but if it didn't he had to take precautions.
"Pug, just cover up and defend yourself if he isn't caught. I don't want either one of you getting anymore hurt than you have to be."

The caterpie had worked hard to be able to defend itself against attackers, it was not going to be the next meal to a passing bird. This mankey was quite an opponent to it as well but it had also heard that human trainers did wonders for pokemon that wanted to become strong. If a bug could limp that was how it made its way back from the tree it had been slammed into, fighting the darkness that threatened to overtake it, it refused to give up! It didn't quite get what the human said to Pug but it saw the pokeball fly through the air towards it and a hint of hope appeared in its eyes. It had succeeded in impressing this trainer and if it was lucky it wouldn't just be left and forgotten, but instead being trained to its full potential. It closed its eyes as it accepted the capture and the pokeball barely shook before it confirmed it. Pug wins the battle and grows to lvl 10! He gains +1 happiness. Caterpie was caught! Both Bishop and Pug watched the pokeball that the Caterpie had disappeared into and held their breath. It only took a couple of tense seconds till they knew that the capture had been successful. Bishop let out a little cheer and pumped his fist as the Mankey did a little victory dance. The trainer couldn't help but chuckle at how happy his fighting type pokemon was
"You did good Pug," he said, quickly giving his friend a hug in congratulations. To many it would seem like such a small victory but Bishop was really rather pleased. After his business with Falkner was done he would have to train his newest partner up and really tap into that fighting spirit. There was no way though he would want to send the poor little fellow out to fight the gym leaders bird pokemon. That would just be a recipe for disaster.
With the battle done he saw to Pug's wounds and took a few moments to catch his breath. There was still quite a ways to go to the next city and more than a couple of pokemon he hoped to see on the road. He had taken his time thus far in reaching his first gym battle. A little longer wouldn't hurt, especially if he could find some new pokemon he really wanted to have. With that in mind he set out again, keeping his eyes peeled on the road and the tall grass just beyond.
