The totem ledian watched Tristan's reactions and the fish, which moved forward, closely. It was a new sight to her as most trainers didn't bring a pokemon clearly made for living in water with them up on dry land, Mako seemed like he had found a way to do just that so the ledian assumed that this carvanha had some hidden strengths. If not they would soon learn it and Mako would be in big trouble. When it came to speed, a flying pokemon certainly was faster than a fish out of water, so the ledian had put up a shimmering shield around it even before Tristan had finished giving his orders.
Mako's teeth certainly was impressive but with tons of rattatas around it wasn't a new sight for the ledian, they were just placed a bit strangely in his mouth compared to what she was used to see. She didn't doubt their effectiveness and she was happy she had the reflect when he barged through the shield and chomped down on her. To Mako it felt like he was swimming up against the stream as he forced his way through the invisible barrier on his way to his target, it slowed him considerably and even made it hard for him to bite down when he had finally reached the totem.

Ledian [Early Bird]: Normal (Reflect 1/5) Mako [Rough Skin]: Normal
Running Shoes utilised to use Focus Energy and then another Bite attack!
The totem Ledian definitely oozed an air of confidence as it prepared its defenses in anticipation of Tristan and his piranha like Pokemon taking the front foot offensively, this definitely didn't appear to be the bug type pokemon's first battle, that much was obvious just be observing how the Ledian held itself.
The shimmering shield that the totem Ledian had established worked a charm for the bug type pokemon as the naturally slower piranha like Pokemon looked evidently laboured as he struggled through the barrier and dealt what he deemed a suitable amount of damage to his opponent, in reality though the pain dealt out could have been much higher had Ledian not effectively set itself up well defensively with its simmering shield. Mako being the hot head that he was could not stand the fact that Ledian wasn't actually mounting an offensive retaliation at this point in the battle, was the bug type pokemon taking him easy like he was some sort of joke to it?! Mako's thirst to win the battle continued to grow with each passing moment in the battle, it was Tristan's job to channel this rage like energy into an efficient battling machine.
"It's alright Mako, it's only early days buddy, I need you to Focus your Energy and then Bite our bug type friend again"
Mako was in a rage filled mood already but hadn't bordered on the berserk sort of rage that the Vikings of old would often access during a battle. The piranha pokemon's body became outlined in a red aura as he tried his absolute best to calm himself down, he needed often reminders from his human partner to ensure he was still entirely present in a situation as he could very easily get side-tracked by his will to win.
While the ledian oozed of confidence she was a careful one, or perhaps her confidence came from her wariness and what had helped her through in earlier battles. She smiled wryly as she watched Mako work his way through her slowing barrier and she clearly relaxed when she learned how little Mako could do against her. Time for some action. She beat her wings and slammed into Mako, disrupting his focus at first, but she herself winced as she came in contact with his rough hide which scratched her up. That had been a bad call and she made sure to keep her distance after that.
Mako concentraded once more, and he thought he saw a weakness in not just the ledian but also in the shimmering shield around her, he wasn't quite sure though, it was hard to see when she kept moving and the almost invisible shield moved with her. The totem wasn't going to make the same mistake twice and instead shot what looked like tiny stars at Mako from a safe distance, those hurt! His patience was no more, either he had found a weakness or he hadn't and only way to figure it out was to test it. He jumped forward and twisted his way through the reflect, Ledian stared shocked at him when he barged through and straight at her, he comped down on her sensitive antennaes and she screamed and struggled to get free of his grasp.
When he finally let got he dropped to the ground and the totem buzzed a bit higher in the sky, both pokemon were panting hard.

Ledian [Early Bird]: Normal (Reflect 2/5) Mako [Rough Skin]: Normal (+2 crit)
<Ledian used Tackle(hurt by rough skin), Mako used Focus Energy, Ledian used Swift, Mako used Bite (citical hit!)>
Running shoes exhausted (ooc: Oh damn, I didn't know that Critical hits ignored stat changes and things like reflect XD)
All it would take was one mistake to be made from either combatant currently in the battle at hand and the momentum would swiftly shift in the others favour. The totem Ledian's response to Mako's initial Bite attack must have given the bug type pokemon a false sense of security as it mounted an offensive upon the water type piranha pokemon in the form of a crashing tackle attack and had came out in worse condition than before it had decided to attack as a result of Mako's rough hide. It seemed as though the bug type pokemon slipped up first despite how calm it seemed in comparison to Mako, a unique turn of events that would make for compelling drama.
Mako had begrudgingly accepted the physical punishment that Ledian had inflicted upon him as he concentrated on finding a weakness in his opponents defenses. The totem Ledian kept its distance as it unleashed its next offensive manoeuvre as it shot what appeared to be tiny stars that most certainly hit the mark on the piranha pokemon inflicting a substantial amount of damage to him, the facial expressions that Mako gave off following the attack encapsulated how much that attack had actually hurt him.
The time for concentration was over for Mako, his rage like instincts kicked in again as he launched forward and twisted his way through the shimmering shield that the bug type pokemon had wisely erected previously in hopes of providing a form of protection. Tristan watched on with delight as his Carvanha barged through the bug type pokemon's defenses and chomped down with his sharp, vicious teeth upon its hyper-sensitive antennae's on the top of the humanoid like ladybug pokemon's head. The bug type pokemon screamed in pain and struggled greatly to release itself from the vice like grip that Mako possessed. As the piranha pokemon released his grip both pokemon could be evidently seen to be panting, a sign of exhaustion and a result of the damage that the two had inflicted upon each other in a short period of time. Tristan was aware of the situation that was being presented to him, the next attack to hit the mark may just be the final blow in what had been an entertaining battle till this point,
"Mako, time to finish it off with Aqua Jet"
Mako gave a death glare like stare towards his bug type adversary, he was filled with rage and determined not to allow his lack of physical conditioning to get the best of him and cause him to lose the battle. Tristan felt a sense of nervousness as it seemed the totem Ledian's strategy was adaptive enough to change on the fly in response to events that occurred, the sign of a pokemon littered with experience, something Tristan hoped that with time would be firmly instilled into his team of water type pokemon.
Mako has certainly taken the Totem by surprise, but she still had energy left and it was the fastest, so she knew she still had a chance. That was until Mako revealed that he had another move in his arsenal which took away the only advantage here. The reflect still slowed him down but far from enough to stop him or for Ledian to move before he reached her. He slammed into her surrounded by water and sent her back first into the treetrunk, where she collapsed on the ground. Ledians were well protected by their exosceleton thought and it didn't take long for it to get back up on its feet. It gave a dignified nod to Mako and Tristan, accepting their superior skills and flew back up into the treetop leaving the amulet behind for Tristan to collect.
When he turned to go back, he would see Kaui standing on the path and waiting for him. "Congratulations, you have successfully finished the Trial! I hope you had fun, and learned a bit about how we do things in Alola," he said kindly. "I have heard there are a few pokemon from Alola living in this region, with your new knowledge you might be able to find some of them now, or else they will recognize the amulet and might be drawn to it. The Trial Amulet has a long history in our region and is held in high regard, so all from the Alolan knows what it means and that a trainer who has gotten one is respected," Kaui continued proudly praising the item. "If you liked this one, there are more trials around the region," he added and glanced hopefully at Tristan, "Do you have any questions?"
Mako won and grows +3 levels to [lvl 15]!
Tristan has finished the trial and won the right to the Trial Amulet!
(ooc: Aren't you happy you got the Aqua Jet now? )
The totem Ledian had fought valiantly in protection of the amulet that lay upon the pedestal, the bug type pokemon had provided an ample challenge for Mako the Carvanha to overcome. It had been the strategy that Tristan had utilised in the battle and Mako's execution of said strategy that had been the critical difference between victory and defeat. The battle had come to an abrupt end after Mako's Aqua Jet attack indefinitely hit the mark as it sent Ledian flying backward into a nearby tree-trunk as it collapsed in exhaustion. As the bug type pokemon recovered it gave a nod of acceptance towards Tristan and Mako, a sign of respect that indicated it was aware that it had been bested in battle today, in turn Tristan gave the bug type pokemon a similar nod of the head to acknowledge it before turning his attention to Mako,
"Nice job Mako, you had to work hard for that one but it was all worth it in the end!"
Tristan moved over to the pedestal where the shiny looking amulet laid and collected it as he admired the unique colours and patterns that it possessed. With Mako in tow, Tristan made his way back along the path from which he had came and was met by Kaui who was full of praise for the teenage sensation and informed him that there were more alolan trials around the Johto region and that pokemon native to that region would likely be less adverse to challenging him in battle now that he was in possession of the amulet. Before continuing along the beaten path, Tristan made sure to share his gratefulness to Kaui for providing him this opportunity to live a new experience, gain further knowledge about pokemon and also gain some valuable training experience for Mako the Carvanha,
"Thanks for allowing me to participate in this trial Kaui, I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to any further trials I have the opportunity to participate in!"
