The blue-haired GYM Leader smirked as he watched the young child run over to her grassy plant Pokemon and spray with down with a healing potion. His lips pulled up into a smirk as one edge curled almost into a sneer. “You know, I don’t blame you.” He nodded towards the plant with its large pink bulb on its back, and even larger green grass leaves jutting out from all sides. “It’s not easy going up against a type disadvantage. But that Potion won’t really help you win the battle.” Falkner shook his head before placing his forehead in his hands with a sigh. He glanced over to Pidgeotto with a nod. The bright light brown feathered avian with cream tipped wings and red plumage jutting out from the top of its head like a crown flapped its wings violently as it chirped out a loud battle cry. It used it’s large, powerful wings to lift itself back in the air and hovered, its eyes turning to narrow down upon its foe. “Ya sure, Pidgeotto? If ya sure, they’ve bought us some time. Use gust attack two more times for me, ok? Then we might try our special attack. Whaddya say?”The large feathered bird with its alternating tail red-and-gold tail feathers craned its head up towards the rooftop above and shrilled as loudly as it could. It then soared around the open indoor area, trying to prove how fit and capable it was to battle the other Pokemon. Pidgeotto began to fan its wings as it flapped them as fast as it could, spiraling about on the winds it created as it summoned another powerful Gust. As soon as Vitra jutted out of the way, the feathered avian would release its attack, which would hit the grassy green Ivysaur. The leech seeds that dug into the bird’s flesh past its feathers glowed, zapping Pidgeotto’s health and sending it back to Midori. Midori began to focus on its next plan of attack as it stood still for a moment. A bright light-blue aura enveloped the plant Pokemon and caused the green frog-like Pokemon with its pink flowering back to glow. The more that Midori focused and concentrated, the brighter Midori would glow. “So, you’re hopin’ to use that Focus Energy to channel in your next attack? I gotta admit, that’s a smart plan, Vitra. Pidgeotto, ya got this! Nothing can stop us, right?” He called up, already knowing the answer to his question. Pidgeotto, just as confident as its trainer, would shriek out a loud cry from its sharp pink beak as it whipped up another Gust and sent it spiraling into Midori. The Leech seeds would glow each time as they zapped just a little more health from the Bird Pokemon. Vitra eyed the Gym leader as he spoke, but she didn't stop. "It'll do what it's supposed to," she shot back, her gaze flicking to the Pidgeotto as the big bird-type began to prepare the next attack, but he held back from releasing it until she was moving back, out of the way again. Eyes closed, Midori didn't react to the wind whipping around her, hunching herself down and doing as instructed, focusing on building energy that would hopefully lead to a decent attack.
And there was still that special attack he was talking about. Vitra had half expected him to use it this round, but Falkner seemed to be taking advantage of Midori's lack of offensive attack to wear her down as much as possible. The Leech Seed helped; she'd be worse off if a little health didn't go to her each turn, but even with that and the potion she was far from safe. Vitra could only hope she could stand up to another attack, and the recoil that would damage her if this one worked.
"Use Take Down now, Midori!" she called out, flashing Falkner a half-smirk at his praise. He'd just said that using the potion wouldn't help, but now he was trying to make her feel better? They'd find out, she supposed, when this round was over. She could only hope Midori could hang on- with any luck, this would be the move to end the battle.

If Midori had to be completely honest with herself she actually didn't really know how to do this focus energy thingy but she wasn't going to let Vitra down in a battle as important like this! She did her best to mimic what she had seen er team mates done before, narrowing her eyes and tensing her body, she did a pretty good job as even Falkner got fooled but he didn't really have any experience with pokemon without wings. Perhaps she even had managed to fool herself? Unfortunately it didn't really do any difference to her. "Dodge it!" Falkner called out a warning to his big bird as Midori bulldozed forward, the mixture of reckless charging compared with the sand filling her eyes made it easy for Pidgeotto to move out of the way in time and calmly watch as she barraged past. "This will be the perfect time for our special move, Roost Pidgeotto!" Falkner ordered and the bird landed on the ground to rest and preen feathers. Falkner looked at Vitra. "That could easily have ended the battle," he stated kindly with a nod towards Midori, "but that is why we made it hard for Midori to see where she is going, and it isn't going to be easier." He blinked warmly, this young trainer and her starter really did gave all what they had, and Falkner thought it was a shame he had to give him such a hard time, but that was his job, to test them and make sure they were ready. Pidgeotto pulled fruitlessly in some of the fine roots that covered it and slowly sucked away its energy, hadn't it been for those it was certain it would have beaten that grass type a long time ago. I'm not sure what have happened here but Ivysaur can't learn that move at all. No harm has done, a risk of calling out the wrong move is to loose a round, so that is just what has happened here.)

Midori’s attack missed. Again. Her blind, failed charge was another turn wasted, and further disappointment chilled Vitra when Falkner finally revealed the move he’d been talking about for turns: one that helped his own pokemon increase its health, dragging out the battle that much longer and making it that much more difficult for Vitra to win.
Frustration replaced the disappointment, and she flashed a glare at the Gym leader. “I already told you we’re going to win! Come on, Midori- use Take Down again. Hit it! Let’s get this battle won.” Willing as ever, and without hesitation, the Ivysaur set off again, her short and stout body racing toward the Pidgeotto, eyes gleaming with determination. She wanted to win too.
Reckless as this move was, VItra didn’t call it off. Falkner had offered something of a hint, after all, in that if Midori hadn’t missed then the last round would have been it. With any luck, trying it again would do some good. If it worked, at least. She’d have to use one of her other pokemon eventually, though; Midori and Denki weren’t enough to win this by themselves.

Falkner looked surprised when snapped at him, he had just tried to be friendly. He looked between her and Midori a few times and then understood, the situation was obviously frustrating for the girl and he wondered if she was thinking straight anymore or had gotten desperate. Midori charged forward at the grounded Pidgeotto who squawked and tried to get out of the way but not being in the air made it a lot harder. Midori finally managed to land her Take Down and send the big bid flailing to the ground, but she was panting, the impact had hurt her as well. "I don't doubt it but is this the right tactic to do that?" Falkner asked neutrally, he wasn't going to tell Vitra what to do but he wanted her to think about her actions. "This isn't a wild pokemon battle which you can win with a few hard strikes. A Gym leader is meant to challenge your skill and simple doing the same over and over isn't going to work," he said and then smiled wryly, "unless your tactic is to take advantage of type advantages and knock my pokemon down with one attack." He had tried that more than once. "I am impressed with how far you and your ivysuar has made it, you work well together. Take Down is an attack that is hard for her to hit with, and as the mud and sand has made it even harder for her to see, it hasn't really made it easier for her," Falkner said, "most other trainers would have switched her out," he added and hoped he hadn't said too much. "Pidgeotto, another Mud-slap," Falkner said calmly, he wasn't going to go easy on Vitra. A trainer should be able to work through troubles like this, especially when she had more than one pokemon. If she believed strength alone could carry her through anything, she still had things she needed to learn. Pidgeotto shook his feathers and then flung more dirt at Midori with his claws, tears was streaming down her chins as her eyes were really irritated but she couldn't do much to clean them while still being in battle. Having the attack land was something of a balm to Vitra’s frustration, but it was coupled with the guilt of watching Midori endure another attack, more hard clumps of mud impacting and causing damage. She’d done great, and maybe it was time to let her rest now. Vitra wasn’t heartless, but she could understand how she’d gotten carried away a little by her frantic desire to come out on top here.
She didn’t acknowledge Falkner with words of her own or even a look, but she heard him all the same. “Midori, come back,” she called, dropping to one knee and reaching out to the Ivysaur as she turned, the sand and mud cut with tear tracks from the irritation to her eyes. Guilt was a sharp twist in the girl’s gut, her own eyes stinging at the grass-type’s desire to please in spite of her discomfort- at her triumphs in spite of her disadvantage against the Pidgeotto.
Quickly snagging another pokeball from her waist, Vitra sent out the replacement: Shiro, the Sentret, solidified and stared across the field at the bird-typeears twitching, and as his trainer called out he flung himself into motion. “Quick Attack, Shiro!”
For Midori, Vitra pulled a bottle of water from her pack; her attention was somewhat divided now, between Shiro and Midori, as she brushed away the grit that clung stubbornly to the Ivysaur’s face, doing her best to help how she could while remaining here, on the field.

The blue-haired GYM Leader watched as Vitra recalled Midori and summoned a furry brown Sentret onto the battlefield. He raised an eyebrow with an approving and semi-worried smile. Did the young trainer take his words seriously? No matter, Falkner knew that his bird Pokemon was one of the strongest and bravest around. They would simply help this young trainer understand herself and her Pokemon more – and do their best to ensure that they did not hand her an easy victory. “Pidgeotto, use the down time to your advantage. Roost this round, and then use Gust!” The large and impressive light brown and cream-colored bird let out a loud shrill before landing on the ground. Pidgeotto roosted, and preened its feathers, as it rested and recovered some of its health. The seeds that bore deep into Pidgeotto’s feathers hurt still and caused the bird to caw out in pain. “We won’t hand this badge over easily.” Falkner voiced his thoughts as he informed Vitra. “If you manage to defeat us it will only be because you earned it.” He then nodded towards his bird, who rose back up into the air. Shiro ran in at a blazing speed, and leaped into the air, slamming its weight against Pidgeotto. The furry brown Sentret knocked the large bird out of the sky temporarily as it rammed into Pidgeotto’s chest. The bird screamed out an ear-splitting and painful caw as it stretched its wings out at either side and flapped desperately to lift itself even higher. Pidgeotto whipped up strong gusts of wind that it used to attack Shiro. Still, the seeds dug in with their roots and glowed, draining health from Pidgeotto and sending it over to heal Shiro. “I’ll admit, your Leech Seed is an impressively planned move from the start. I didn’t plan it to be this useful.” He nodded approvingly, as he watched the seeds slowly drain enough health away to make it seem as though Roost didn’t even matter. Having cleared the worst of the mud and sand from Midori’s eyes, Vitra stored the water bottle back in her bag and turned to face the battle. She was in time to see Shiro hurl himself into the side of the bird, who squawked a protest before going airborne with strong beats of its wings, using those gusts to tear at the round body of her Sentret.
He dropped to all fours, ears pressed back to his head from the force of the wind, claws dug into the ground to keep himself from sliding too much, but it was a relief to have the wind die down again, and he blinked open his eyes to stare at the Pidgeotto again.
He seemed to have weathered the attack well, Vitra thought; her gaze flashed past at Falkner. “Leech Seed has come through for me before. It looks like it will this time too. Again, Shiro: use Quick Attack on the Pidgeotto.”
“Sentret!” her pokemon replied chirpily, and darted off again, flinging himself across the space between him and his opponent with the intent of barreling into the Pidgeotto once more.

Falkner smiled at Vitra's determination, it was good to hear she was back in the game again and sounded less desperate as before. Sometimes it was good to stick with what you had planned and what you knew worked, but if there was trouble a good trainer should be able to change tactics to pull in the victory. Vitra might have needed a little push for that, but she was doing good and Falkner was happy to see that she was able to learn and change her ways. That required courage and Falkner didn't doubt any longer that this trainer could had what it took. "It seems so yes, but you haven't won yet and Roost has changed the course of the battle more than once," Falkner grinned and looked proudly at his majestic pidgeotto who soared above them, keeping a close eye on little Shiro on the battlefield. "Another Gust!" Falkner bellowed and the bird began to flap its wings, but when the gust reached where Shiro had stood, he was long gone. A brown streak raced over the battlefield and with the help of his tail launched himself into the air at his opponent. Pidgeotto twisted in the air to avoid the impact but wasn't fast enough and Shiro slammed into his wings and send him spiraling down towards the ground again. He quickly regained his balance and gave Shiro extra speed on his drop down to earth by giving him a powerful gust in the back. Shiro groaned as he pulled himself up from the ground and quickly gobbled down the berry he carried, feeling the energy it gave him. A moment after he got even further energy from the seeds that drained it from the pidgeotto, and the bird flapped erratically down to the ground and stood with shaking wings, unable to move another muscle. "You were right, congratulations!" Falkner praised as he recalled Pidgeotto and then walked over to Vitra and handed her a badge, a TM and some money. "As proof of your victory at Violet Gym I hereby give you the Zephyr badge, you have earned it!" Falkner said with a smile, "I also give you the TM51 Roost, which can be very handy as you have seen, and of course some money. I will suggest you go towards Azalea Town's Gym next, good luck!"With that the assistant appeared at Vitra's side to take her to the exit and Falkner would retreat to treat his pokemon and enjoy some flying time with them. The surge of relief, pride, and triumph at the victory swamped Vitra, and she never would have been able to keep the bright grin off her face- not for all the money in the world. Or for all the pokemon, which meant more to her. Her team had done it! She had had a moment of doubt, but they were strong and capable and wonderful. Shiro looked a bit tired, but he was still standing while Falkner's Pidgeotto wobbled on its legs, eyes closed and clearly unable to continue the battle any longer.
"Shiro!" she called, and the Sentret turned back to her, brightening as she held her arms out and darting over. Denki was quick to join in, and Midori's happy grumble and the solid weight of her leaning against Vitra was as much a hug as the clasp of paws from the other two. She couldn't quite find the words to praise them, but they knew as well as she did that they'd won.
She glanced up at Falkner as he approached and stood, brushing off her knees before holding out her hand and watching with excitement as the Zephyr badge was set in her hand along with the winnings she'd earned. She glanced up at him, still smiling, and spoke as she tucked both badge and money into a pocket of her bag. "Thank you. And- um- I'm sorry if I was rude." Her smile faded a bit, a light flush rising to her cheeks, and she was grateful for the assistant who came to direct her away. She recalled her pokemon, except for Midori who trotted at her side, and headed back for the entrance.
(Shiro forgets Defense Curl in favor of Fury Swipes.)
