flower of the flock
Name: Briony Fay
Age: 18
Gender: Nonbinary (Agender, they/them)
Trainer Type: Standard Trainer, raised as a Gardener (Florist), wants to become a Ranger
Hometown: Cherrygrove City
Appearance: Briony is around 5'6" tall, their body slender and petite. They don't look particularly strong or capable, but underneath their thin frame hides years of build-up upper body strength from working in the family garden. Of course, they aren't a body-builder by any means, just not entirely as frail as they seem.
Their face and skin are youthful, pale but not too pale, and covered in a thick cloud of freckles (although, some are admittedly old acne scars). Briony's hair is dyed a soft, baby pink and styled in a short and sensible braid, with two strands framing their face and fluffy bangs sweeping down from the left side. Their eyes are a warm brown, brown like the dirt, and they shine almost golden in the sunlight. The teen is often seen wearing a plain white collared shirt with the sleeves rolled up, a plain straw hat to keep the sun away, khaki pants often dirt-stained from kneeling in the garden, and heavy work boots. Sometimes, if they're feeling special, they'll put on suspenders and a nice patterned button-down and slacks. They are also known to wear flower crowns that they've made themself. Briony also paints their nails green.
Personality: Upon first glance, Briony appears to be just your standard wallflower. They're shy and unobtrusive, often preferring to fade into the background rather than actually confront others. They're a big introvert, content to keep the company of Pokémon and flowers instead of actual people. That being said, although it takes them a little while to get used to other people, the moment they get to know you and are comfortable with you, they're an invaluable friend.
Briony is kind and gentle around Pokémon and people and even more so around plants. They're a gentle soul, and its evident in the smiles they give when no one's looking. They have always loved Pokémon and loved being around them, although they lean more towards preferring the Grass- and Water-types. Those are the types of Pokémon their parents had helping in the gardens. Admittedly, they're a little scared of the more aggressive and intimidating Pokémon, especially ones bigger than them.
Some would consider Briony to be cowardly. They are timid and they cry easily, but it's only due to inexperience in the outside world. They can handle more than they think they can...
History: Briony was born to a standard family, the Fay family, owners of a gardening and florist shop in Cherrygrove City. Their parents, Aster and Lily Fay, were not rich, nor were they poor. Money was always a little tight, however, so Briony lived a modest childhood. They were put to work just about as soon as they could hold a spade, because "it's the family business" and Aster and Lily never had any other children. While Briony never hated working with their parents and found it quite relaxing, actually, they didn't particularly like that that seemed to be their only option. With time, though, they relaxed into their gardening lifestyle and were okay with working, as long as their parents were happy.
Aster and Lily owned three Pokémon between them: Bubbles the Marill, Rosie the Roselia, and Berry the Hoppip. They weren't really the Training types, instead using their Pokémon to help them in their gardens and in the shop. Briony was absolutely infatuated with these Pokémon and played with them whenever they had the chance. Of course, the Fay parents noticed their then-son's proclivity to Pokémon but they didn't think much of it. This, it seemed, would come back later to bite them.
Briony was homeschooled in your general reading, writing, and arithmetic. And, of course, gardening, with a splash of Pokémonology on the side. They would sometimes go out and play with the other neighborhood children but they never truly made very good friends with any of them, as they were pretty shy and quiet. They were more comfortable with Pokémon, anyway. As Briony got older, they were tasked with running the shop as a clerk by the ripe old age of 13. They no longer had neighborhood kids to play with as they were all enrolled in the Pokémon Trainer school. But that was okay, they had the shop to run, it was the family business. At this age, though, Briony was going through some changes.
They had felt this way for a long time, actually. Ever since they could remember. They knew that they were a boy, but they didn't...feel like one. It always seemed like the other boys were...different. They couldn't put their finger on it. This feeling got worse once Briony began to go through puberty. They were a boy, that's what everyone said, but...deep down, they didn't feel like one at all. But they didn't really feel like a girl, either. If not a boy or a girl, what else was out there?
Through their limited Pokémonology classes, they understood that some Pokémon were male, some were female, and others...were another thing entirely. They were genderless, not male or female. The more Briony thought about it and dwelled on it and sat on the possibility of being genderless like those Pokémon...it scared them, but it also...felt right. Finally they had a word for what they were feeling. They sat on this feeling for another two years, not actually coming out to their parents as being genderless until they were 15. They were so scared something bad would happen, but...it didn't. It turns out, Aster and Lily had noticed this change in Briony a long, long time ago. Briony had never been one for particularly masculine things or particularly feminine things and they were always more comfortable looking more androgynous than most boys...It made sense to them that Briony wasn't, in fact, a boy at all. They were genderless, like the Pokémon. So Briony transitioned from the more masculine "he/him" pronouns to the neutral "they/them" pronouns without much of an issue, although it took their parents a little time to get used to it.
Now, Briony had never really entertained the thought of being a Pokémon Trainer up until recently. Not until the shop had some interesting customers one day. Briony was now 17, almost 18, and they were tending to the shop as a clerk. In came a woman in a red and black uniform with her partner Pokémon, a scary-looking Houndoom. Briony was nervous yet intrigued by this woman, so he just had to ask who she was. She explained that she was a Pokémon Ranger, and she needed some flowers to plant out in the wild to attract more Pokémon as there had been a forest fire recently. This sounded very noble to Briony and their interest was sparked immediately. Maybe they could do something like that...
Aster and Lily were not fond of this idea. They would lose their best worker, just for them to go out and possibly endanger themself with wild Pokémon running about. Briony had absolutely zero experience as a Trainer, let alone a Ranger. But there was no stopping Briony; they just couldn't shake this idea. It took a lot of convincing but the Fay parents agreed that Briony could go to New Bark Town on their 18th birthday to pick up a Pokémon from the Professor there. It was well-known that Professor Oak gave out starter Pokémon to new Trainers.
Finally, Briony turned 18. They were already packed and ready to go, with only some saved up tip money to their name. Although they were very nervous about starting this journey, they were excited too. And this is where their journey begins...
