"What do you suppose is causing it?" Trixie asked the Treecko on her shoulder as they both looked up at the tower that appeared to be swaying in the center. Romaine didn't know, but she wanted to find out, and she urgently pointed in the direction of the entrance. "All right, all right, we can do a little tourist visit before hitting the Gym. Maybe they'll have some interesting new Pokemon as well!" Passing through the doors was a welcome relief from the oppressive heat beating down upon the rest of the city. Upon arriving at the Sprout Tower she could see that it was clearly a shrine to the Bellsprout species, one she was quite familiar with from growing up in Celadon. That was a little disappointing. But Romaine seemed to be captivated by the pillar in the middle, as she began slowly tilting back and forth in rhythm with it. Trixie looked at the stairs up - there appeared to be no elevator. This was going to be a long climb. She leaned down to stretch out her legs in preparation, letting Romaine hop to the ground. "Quil!" A high-pitched squeal and a burst of flame caught her eye. Trainer and Pokemon rushed over to the stairs see what the commotion was about. When they arrived they found a Fire-type, which Trixie's Pokedex identified as a Cyndaquil - a rare Johtonian Pokemon indeed! - facing off against a pair of Bellsprout, who were relentlessly slinging Vine Whips at it. The winded mouse Pokemon bristled at the two arrivals quite literally, its back going up in flames. "Treecko, tree," Romaine said, apparently trying to calm it down. Romaine eventually got the story out that the Cyndaquil was trying to climb the tower to earn a rematch with the sage and the "Sacred Sprout" awaiting it at the top. She gestured to herself and Trixie, and pointed upward as well. "Quil?" the Fire-type asked inquisitively. Romaine looked back at Trixie and she nodded her head. "It looks like we're all headed toward the same goal then. But first things first, two against one isn't fair at all, now is it?" She enlarged a Pokeball from her belt, and sent out Taichi, the Meditite looking right at home in the temple-slash-dojo. "You two ready for this? And how about you?" One of the sages stands up a little taller. He looks over at the trainer who is trying to interfere in their job.
"This cyndaquil isn't worthy to face our master and his bell sprout at the top." Sage Jin proudly states.
One of the bellsprout, the one in front of Sage Jin, turns and faces the new trainer. The bellsprout still facing Cyndaquil tries to reason with it.
"Bell...bellsprout...bbeell." <Cyndaquil, you know you aren't ready for this. Back down for your own good.>
"Why does it matter to you, miss, what this cyndaquil does anyways? We are trying to teach it a lesson. Are you wanting a lesson in defeat as well?"

"And who are you to teach me a lesson?" Trixie replied with sass in her voice. She had many good qualities, but neither reverence nor deference was among them. I'm not going to lose. Think of how uncool it would make me look in front of Cyndaquil, after all... She motioned the mouse Pokemon to stand back while her Meditite and Treecko took their places opposite the pair of Bellsprout. Then she stated her name, and the sages introduced themselves as Jin and Chow. The Cyndaquil was reluctant, but it knew it had to rest and recover its strength after that difficult battle. It looked over to Romaine. <Are you sure...? They're strong...> For her part, Romaine smiled and gave a thumbs-up to her new friend. She wasn't exactly the biggest fan of fighting, as she didn't like the hurt feelings that often went along with it. But she would do her best! "Taichi, Confusion on the left one. Romaine, Quick Attack the right!" The two Pokemon's approaches to battle could not be more different. In almost the blink of an eye, Romaine had run right next to her target Bellsprout and attempted to smack it with her tail. Taichi sat cross-legged, closed his eyes, and clasped his hands together instead. Just when one would start to wonder if the Meditite actually intended to battle, his eyes flew open and his arms pointed outward, surrounding himself and the rude Sage's Bellsprout with blue-colored psychic energy. "It is you who entered our sacred tower. All who enter, would it be Pokemon or trainer, are subject to whatever lessons we deem. Be glad we are allowing you to battle us, dear Trixie." Jin responds. "I take it you have no manners. You should respect your elders, young lady." Chow remarks. "Alright bellsprout, use sunny day to brighten up this little scruffle." Chow calls out. "For my bellsprout, use growth. This fight will be short lived and then you as well as this cyndaquil will be on your way." Jin adds in. Double Trainer Battle

"Hey! And here I was trying to get away from the sun!" Trixie winced and shaded her face with her arm as the Bellsprout streamed an intense light and heat into the temple room. The sun seemed to energize the Bellsprouts, too, and they sped up their swaying side to side in what appeared to Trixie like a strange dance. But they were in a battle, and this was nothing to take lightly, especially as the left Bellsprout spread its leaves to nourish them in the sunlight and its whole frame seemed to grow slightly bigger. "We can't allow that one to take over the battle! Both of you, repeat attack on the left Bellsprout, now!" Romaine dashed forward once again, but this time she abruptly changed trajectory and moved to strike the larger Bellsprout. Taichi had dispensed with the appearance of meditation and his eyes and hands glowed again, trying to psychically lift and throw the larger Bellsprout after Romaine had weakened it. "The meditite is the more dangerous out of the two, would you say Chow?" "Yes, Jin, its confusion did a number on your bellsprout. I also heard from others they can be a challenge. This trainer must have caught it when we had the bad swarm not too long ago." "So, we take it out together with me using vine whip..." "And my bell sprout will use bullet seed." The vine whip and bullet seed connect on the meditite. Vine whip is extra large thanks to the growth move which gives them an extra punch. Bullet seed does its job of finishing off the medititite but that bell sprout gets hit with a quick attack before it launches the seeds. Weather: Harsh Sun (Sunny Day round 1) Double Trainer Battle

"Oh no, Taichi!" Trixie's face fell when the Meditite's concentration was broken by a spray of seeds in his direction, followed up closely by a Vine Whip from Sage Jin's Bellsprout, although she could see Romaine got in a hit on that Bellsprout first. That was a disappointing total loss. She had hoped to get the Meditite some more experience, though she could see these Sages knew his weakness in defense. Fortunately from the accumulated attacks the left Bellsprout was looking quite worn down. She estimated that one more Quick Attack would do the trick, and returned her fallen Pokemon.
That only left the second Bellsprout, which was still very much healthy. "Let's wrap this up quick. Kung Pao, I choose you!" The energetic Torchic emerged from her Poke Ball, hopping back and forth on her feet. "Use Flame Charge on the right one!" Kung Pao wreathed herself in flames and ran forward as quickly as she could, the sun's energy stoking the flames to double their usual size.

Trixie tosses out a torchic as she recalls her meditite. The torchic starts to glow thanks to sunny day. "Look, Sage Chow, our sunny day is making our friend cyndaquil brighten up a little bit. I had forgotten what it does for fire types." "It isn't the only fire type out now. It looks like our little trainer decided to start using her head and sent out a torchic. It isn't common in its homeland and even more rare here. The feathers look like they are glowing bright like a miniature sun." Trixie calls out her moves and before Jin could react, his bellsprout was knocked out. The torchic glowed much brighter to the point of becoming a literal ball of fire. Chow's bellsprout launches another three shots of bullet seed at the torchic watching the seeds burn up as they hit the new Pokemon. In response, Kung Pao becomes a literal ball of fire as she rushes at Chow's bellsprout. She hits the bellsprout so hard it flies back into the wall in its own fire ball. When it hits the wall, the fire goes out and Chow rushes over to look at the damage. "Hold on, bell sprout, I will get you to Nurse Joy." Sage Jin watches as his partner cares for his pokemon as Chow rushes out the building. "Nice job on using our move against us, young one. Remember your lesson here as you go on up. Maybe the cyndaquil will learn from this battle as well. Remember to take care of your Pokemon after this experience." Sage Jin recalls his own bell sprout and walks up to Trixie to hand her $300. "Thanks for the battle," Trixie said after the Pokemon were recalled on both sides. "And, uh, thanks for the words of wisdom. I guess." She made a V sign with her fingers and grinned at the Cyndaquil, gesturing it to follow her up the stairs.
The second floor was laid out like a garden, with soil beds where Bellsprout parents were watching over their eggs. Trixie turned to greet the next Sage, but no sooner had he laid eyes on her than he ran over to a valve and turned it. The sprinklers on the ceiling came to life, drenching the Bellsprout nursery in life-giving rain but also causing the Cyndaquil to let out a shriek. It ran and hid under a particularly large leaf sticking out from one of the taller trees.
"Well, that wasn't very nice," Trixie said, not minding so much getting soaked herself. "Since Cyndaquil isn't able to battle, I will in its place. Come on out, Meavi!" The Spewpa took her place opposite the Sage, who introduced himself as Neal and sent out his own Bellsprout.
"String Shot, go!" Trixie commanded. Meavi spit out a sticky thread, trying to entangle the Bellsprout's feet in it.

The footsteps he'd heard climbing the wooden tower were not of whom he'd expected. Sage Neal almost didn't even look at Trixie as she breached the threshold to the nursery. His head nodded her direction, eyes still focused on fertilizing a plot, when the striking bright colored stripes of her attire registered in his mind. His gaze shot up, body jerking lightly in surprise. "Oh! A guest," he spoke apologetically and was about to bow in her direction when another spot of brightness met his eyes. Of which went wide before he panic pivoted and made for a nearby valve. "Not very nice," the monk repeated with indignation. "You should have seen what that little firecracker did the last time it was here." He pointed a finger accusingly at the hiding fire mouse. Despite its best efforts it ended up just a little bit wet. Though, with Trixie declaring herself as its champion, Cyndaquil didn't mind too much and instead cheered her on from the sidelines with a series of squeaks. The sage hmphed loudly, "As you say then. I am Sage Neal. My bellsprout will stop you two from getting to our Sacred Sprout!" The familiar pokemon popped out of one of the dirt plots and swaggered her way over to take up a position opposite the revealed spewpa. "Keep it calm for now Bellsprout, Tickle." The sage seemed hopeful. The battle was starting off at a cautionary pace as the sprinklers rained down upon them all. Bellsprout extended a set of black fines and went to poking and lightly caressing Meavi's outer shell with an uncanny sense for the sensitive spots. Through the tickling the bug type managed to spit forth her sticky string and entangle the sprout quite thoroughly. vs Sage Neal

Meavi wriggled and squealed as the strange vines tickled her all over, distracting her momentarily until she managed to entangle it with String Shot. "Let's not draw out this battle," Trixie said. She knew that the longer the Cyndaquil was forced to sit around in this rain, the less well it would feel for the final confrontation with Sacred Sprout. For its part the Cyndaquil was doing its best to keep a brave face on. "Quil! Quil!" it said as it cheered on Meavi.
"Try your Tackle attack!" Trixie said. With the Bellsprout ensnared, it would be an easy target for the bug Pokemon, even in the rain-slicked ground. Meavi threw her whole self quite literally into the attack, then waited to see what the Bellsprout would do.

"There doesn't need to be a battle. If you would just escort Cyndaquil outside of Sprout Tower," Sage Neal attempted to persuade. Cyndaquil would of course have none of that. It went straight to cheering even louder for Trixie and her spewpa. The monk put his hands together to keep centered, his sleeves flopping to cover his fists in the meditative state. "Bellsprout we must go on the offensive." No further instruction was given. Some would attribute that to a fine attunement between pokemon and trainer, but in this instance it was simply a matter of not having options. The lankly plant started trying to maneuver its extendable vines but was having difficulty getting them smoothly through the tangle of sticky webbing Meavi had sprayed beforehand. This provided the bug ample time to waddle her way over and deliver a solid tackle upon the grass pokémon. With the distance closed Bellsprout was at least provided an easier target. She wouldn't have to get her vines out quite so far to get her attack in. As such, the sprout managed to slip enough of the tendril out to slap Meavi's side. It wasn't too hard a hit, but the tickling from earlier had left her a bit more sensitive than usual. "Just like a spinarak's web." The comment came completely unprompted from across the room. Sage Neal had dropped his posture and appeared to have a bit more resolve than he did a moment ago. "We can work in harmony with many of our natural enemies, but when they come to nibble at our leaves we can't idle by and wait for it to be over." The speech seemed to be more for himself than the young lady in his presence. vs Sage Neal

Trixie couldn't deny she was getting frustrated with the way the Sages were acting. Neal was going off about something or other to do with a Spinarak. What was all that about? There wasn't any spider Pokemon in the battle! She let out a little grunt of irritation and turned back to Meavi. "Tackle attack again!" The little bug gamely tried her best to poke at the Bellsprout, though Trixie could see her hesitation from the way she had been tickled earlier. This was going to turn into a losing fight unless she made some drastic changes. Should she switch? Not to Kung Pao, with the rain still falling, but perhaps one of her other Pokemon...

The sage looked rather distracted and probably didn't notice Trixie's growing frustration, he saw the battle unfold and sighed and shifted to stand more comfortable. "Times are trying, like bellsprouts we must endure and wait out the storm," he quoted someone unknown and then looked sadly at the cyndaquil before he addressed Trixie directly again. "What is your goal by helping this fire type into this tower of wood?" Sage Neal asked sounding a bit confused, "do you know what it has done here?" he added sadly and the cyndaquil protested loudly. Sage Neal ignored it as he looked back at his bellsprout. "My apologies wise one but I still have to work on my patience," he said quietly, "use Growth Bellsprout," he gave his order embarrassed and the grass type started wiggling down into the soft soil to find the needed nutrients. Maevi was already on the move though and slammed into the flexible grass type, who bend off from the attack and then began zapping energy from the soil which made it grow a bit in size. Sage Neal glanced towards the stairs leading up with reddening cheeks and fidgeted a bit uncomfortable. "We can't idle by and wait for it to be over," he repeated mumbling and straightened a bit more determined. vs Sage Neal

"Rrgh..." Trixie grunted under her breath. Why was her Pokemon so-- so weak?
She wanted to yell at Meavi in that moment. Wanted to urge her on to hit the Bellsprout harder, but the bug Pokemon turned toward her with pleading eyes, and she knew it wouldn't do any good. If she did, she'd just be as bad as Silver, and she would rather lose the match than be as bad as that. Maybe these Sages had a point after all. She closed her eyes, stopped, took a deep breath.
"Meavi, you've done enough. Take a rest," she said, before sending out her next Pokemon. Romaine appeared in a flash of light.
"What did this Cyndaquil even do to you people, anyway?" she asked, not yet calling her next move. The way it was upsetting all the Sages, perhaps there was more to the story than she initially thought. Behind her, she heard the Cyndaquil squeak in protest, but she was unable to understand its words.
