Brimming with excitement, Trixie skipped through the doors of the Violet City Gym bright and early in the morning. Her first gym battle! She hoped she wouldn't screw this up too much; she was definitely taking a risk, but after doing research on Falkner and his team, the challenge she was bringing him just felt right. She hoped he wouldn't take offense, as she registered with the front desk attendant, then half-paid attention to the droning lecture about rules, regulations, and all that jazz. She knew how to behave herself in a regulation Pokemon battle. Though it occurred to her that the Pokemon currently perched on her arm might not be as well-behaved.
"Listen up, Robin. These are very important rules."
If the red-colored Pidgey regarded these rules with the same solemnity he didn't show it in the least. Instead the bird Pokemon was preening his feathers, turning himself this way and that to ensure that he shone under the Gym's bright overhead lights. Robin had also taken pride in Trixie's selection of him for the battle, and as a demonstration that he was, yes, her strongest Pokemon, he was ready to demonstrate his superiority to the lesser Pidgey who resided in this Gym.
As the final step of her pre-Gym preparation, Trixie tucked a small Berry underneath her Pokemon's wing, held on by a simple strap. They had an understanding that the Berry was to be saved for a time of need, though the arrogant bird very much doubted he would need it. The attendant soon led them to the stadium proper, where they were greeted by a blue-haired man and an open-air arena lit by the light of the sun itself. Most people didn't get up this early in the morning to watch battles, but there were a handful of spectators in the ringside bleachers. Trixie waved to them as she entered, showing more confidence than she was actually feeling. She stepped up to the Gym Leader to shake his hand.
"Hi. My name is Trixie Hayworth, from Celadon City. Robin and I are here to challenge you for a Gym badge!"

The young gym leader is cleaning his pidgey as he grooms his feathers as it sits on his forearm. He gets one side done and by the time he gets to the other side a young woman walks in to challenge him. He sees a red looking bird on her shoulder and looks at it closer. It reminded him of another strangely colored pidgey he fought maybe a month ago. Falkner puts away his grooming tool and then reaches out his hand to shake his opponent's hand. "Hi Trixie Hayworth, I am Gym Leader Falkner. I see you appreciate bird Pokemon like I do. Your red pidgey reminds me of another trainer who had one similar. That was a good match because the trainer wanted a true bird to bird battle. It is always interesting to see how others raise their bird Pokemon and what better way then through a Pokemon battle. Now, if you walk back to the other end of the court to take your spot so we can begin." Once Trixie gets into position, Falkner nods over to the assistant who makes a loud announcement. He raises his hands as he speaks. "Today's match will be Trixie Hayworth of Celadon City vs Gym Leader Falkner. Let the best trainer win the match." Once he is done, he drops his hands and Falkner launches his pidgey off of his gloved hand and into the sky. "It is time, Trixie Hayworth, to see who has the better pidgey."

Trixie raised an eyebrow when Falkner mentioned that he had previously encountered a trainer with a red Pidgey. What was he implying? That she was... copying them? That her own bird was not special? Of course there had to be other Pidgey out there, she reasoned. Robin was left at an adoption center after all, which meant he had been bred somewhere else. Perhaps this other Pidgey and he used to be part of the same flock? Perhaps she would find this mystery trainer and challenge them later. For now she had a badge to win. She nodded politely and took her bird to the other end of the arena where the trainer's box awaited.
Falkner released his Pidgey into the sky immediately, but Trixie did not do the same. Instead she reached into the side pocket of her backpack and pulled out a golden-colored capsule filled with powder. She flicked the capsule open and offered it to Robin, who opened wide and let it drop right down his gullet. The red bird then started glowing with energy the same color as the capsule, almost as if he was using Focus Energy - the move whose effect was replicated in the item she had chosen. If it's going to be one versus two, no one can blame me for evening the odds a bit, can they? "Let's fly!" she called out as she flicked her arm to send Robin into the ring.
The two Pidgey circled each other intently, each looking for a weakness in their opponent. It was Falkner's Pidgey who struck first, but Trixie had prepared a counterattack. "Wait for it to get closer, then use Air Cutter!" The red bird did as ordered, furiously flapping his wings and sending out a barrage of X-shaped blue blades made of cutting wind.

The blue haired Gym leader raised an eyebrow in curious amusement as Trixie reached into her bag and pulled out a small medicinal capsule that she offered to her red colored variant. He placed a hand silently on his chin nodded to himself. She was already moving into a strategic gameplay that she was most likely hoping to angle them a triumphant win in the long haul. All the more reason that he would have to play ball with her. “Was that a Dire Hit?” He called out to her with a smile, as though it were possible that his eyes might have deceived him. “Quite a strategic move, if I do say so myself. We have our own strategies at play, too, right Pidgey?”The small dull brown bird landed beside Falkner and primmed up. It chirp as it agreed happily with its trainer. The Pidgey fluffed up its feathers and fanned out its wings in a brilliant display. “Lower their accuracy, then move in quick for a strong hit. Sand-Attack and follow that up with a powerful Tackle!” He called out. The small brown feathered avian hopped up and down on the ground and flapped its wings in the air. It used its powerful pink feet with their sharp white claws to kick and claw up every remnant of dirt and debris they could muster and seemingly summoned more sand from nowhere at all. The feathery brown bird would flap its wings like war drums and send the dirt spiraling into Robin’s eyes and face, making it harder for him to see. But Robin's Keen Eyes wouldn't let a little dirt stop him from seeing things clearly, now would he? “Watch out for their Air Cutter! Keep a close eye on that red Pidgey, Pidgey!” Falkner cupped his hands around his mouth as she shouted at his bird. Already, both birds were airborne. While Robin listened obediently to his trainer’s wishes and awaited the speedy little Pidgey’s attack, Falkner’s Pidgey zipped in close on the indoor air currents that its wings generated. When the Pidgey moved in close, Robin would be ready. Long, sharp wing blades fanned out from the red bird’s wings as he clapped them together and used them to deal a strong and powerful cut into his opponent, knocking the other bird clear out of the skies to spiral back down to earth and land, fainted, on the wooden floors of the GYM. “Pidgey!” Falkner called out and pulled out its Pokeball. “Pidgey, can you still battle?” It raised a singular wing with a soft, “Pid-?” and passed out. Falkner recalled his Pokemon with the click of a button. “Ya did good, Pidgey. Ya did good…Now, Pidgeotto, it’s your turn. Come on out!” He summoned Pidgey’s evolved form – a larger brown bird with bright reddish-orange and pink tail feaths and head crest feathers – in its stead. “I must say, Trixie, that was some impressive moves your Robin showed just down. But don’t think we’re out yet. Far from it.” He smiled. Falkner Battle Weather: Clear [attr="class","qkt-bkgd"] [attr="class","qkt-wild-pkmn"] Falkner's Pidgey LV 10 HP 0% [0/31]

"Pidgey is unable to battle. The... other Pidgey... is the winner!" the referee announced.
"Awesome job, Robin!" Trixie flashed a V sign at her bird Pokemon, who fluffed up his feathers and spread his wings, screeching in triumph. Then a most unusual thing happened, even getting the attention of the spectators who were otherwise bored with this bird-on-bird affair. Robin's entire body glowed, not like the Dire Hit capsule, but a brilliant white. And the white outline grew. It grew, sprouting additional feathers and fanning out its tail, until the light faded and flapping in the air before Trixie was a Pokemon that resembled Falkner's almost exactly, in shape and size if not in color.
"Pidgeotto," read off the Pokedex. "The evolved form of Pidgey. It flies over its wide territory in search of prey. It has outstanding vision and renders its prey immobile using well-developed claws. This Pokémon will fiercely peck at any intruder." Trixie was ecstatic. Robin had evolved into a Pidgeotto! Not only would he be stronger, but it was another entry for her Pokedex!
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the referee look back and forth between both Pidgeotto and sigh, "Begin."
"Let's come out fierce with another Air Cutter!" she said, and Robin, testing his wings, soared high into the air again, making sweeping loops around the arena until he decided the time was right to loose another gust of bladed air.

The audience this day was a school class who had yet to understand the thrill of an aerial battle, as they unlike many of the normal spectators weren't bird crazy. To them this was just two common pidgeys who could just as well be arguing in the streets beside their home as they had seen so many times before. An evolution wasn't a common thing to see and it certainly grabbed the attention of the kids, who eagerly shouted and pointed it out, not wanting anyone to miss the experience and they all wanted the teacher to know what they had just seen and how awesome it was. "Why is it red?" One of the kids asked loudly and they begun to discuss the differences between Robin and Falkner's more common looking bird of the same caliber. Falkner's smile faltered a bit when Robin got engulfed in red, his own Pidgeotto waiting patiently and unfaced. The memory of the last red pidgey, who had bested his pidgeotto to then evolving afterwards flashed in his mind. If this one could knock out his well trained Pidgey in one go, it certainly hadn't become any less of a threat now it had evolved. Falkner swallowed nervously and thought of what his father would have done in this situation and the doubt whether he was fit for the task wormed its way into his mind again, even though he had come a long way getting over it. "It's a magnificent bird, I doubt I need to show you how great flying types are," the gym leader called out to Trixie with a nervous laugh, "so tell me, where did you get it?" If he was going to meet more of them he better prepare and figure out how to handle it. "Pidgeotto, it might be all sparkling but you know how to fight! Give it Gust and let's see how its flying!" Falkner called out and sounded more confident, he had great birds too and he was going to show it. Robin was the fastest of the two and he stopped his circling of the other bird to flap his wings hard, forcing the air together in front of him in white blade-like shapes, and they blasted at the other pidgeotto. The usual calm bird who often were a step ahead was caught by surprise of the speed and ferocity of the attack and was sent spiraling down at the ground just like Pidgey had. Just before crash landed it threw out its wings and slowed its fall, but it didn't look good and staggered a few steps. "Pidgeotto!" Falkner gasped and both he and his bird stared at Robin, who was still soaring above. Falkner clenched his jaw, this was going to be a challenge. "Roost!" He changed his order since Pidgeotto hadn't had a chance to do his earlier and this one was much more needed. As Pidgeotto began preening itself and tend to the worst of its sores, Falkner frowned as he tried to find a way to turn this around. "I got him at the National Johto Adoption Center," Trixie said in response to Falkner's question. "I don't know why his previous trainer left him there, but I was grateful for the chance to raise him. You've come a long way, haven't you, Robin?" In reply, the red Pidgeotto let out a joyful screech, before turning his attention back to the regular-colored one.
It seemed that Falkner's Pokemon had some way to rest and recover health. In that case it looked like it was going to turn into a battle of attrition. Trixie would have to be patient, but she was fortunate for the experience she had gained by way of the grueling battles in Sprout Tower. She chuckled inwardly as she realized the Sages had taught her something after all.
"Keep at it, Robin! Air Cutter again!" As the red bird Pokemon wound up for another attack of slicing air, his patience was... considerably less than Trixie's. <What's the matter?> he called out to his opponent. <Are you too chicken to come up here and fight me? Geo-to-to-to!> That last part almost sounded like cawing laughter to Trixie. She hadn't supposed bird Pokemon were capable of such. But one learned something new every day, it would seem.

The blue-haired GYM Leader craned his head up to stare at the birds as they danced on the winds and soared around each other. Falkner already learned that accuracy reducing moves like Sand Attack were a no-go and knowing his bird personally Falkner was positive that Mud-Slap would have virtually no effect, either. That left the GYM Leader with virtually two moves at his arsenal. He would have to hope that he could play a good bait-and-switch between the two, as well, since he would need to land at least a few successful moves to help ensure that this red variant was given a run for its money. He furrowed his brow while deep in thought, then relaxed as Trixie explained how she had adopted the strangely colored now-Pidgeotto. “I wonder…” He placed one hand on his chin and began rubbing the side of his face with his thumb. He had faced a red Pidgey before, but could it be possible that the two were the same? This one seemed so similar and yet so different. Falkner wasn’t quite sure, but he wanted to doubt that there was no coincidence between the two. “Although a rare sight, I would be surprised to learn that the red Pidgey I met in the past was placed up for adoption. Still, I have to wonder if they’re related. Don’t you agree? Yours is quite a rarity. Pidgeotto, go for Gust!” Then he would have it go for Roost and pray that he would be able to squeeze the move in before Robin took his Pidgeotto out.The two danced back on the airways as Falkner’s brown-and-creamed feathered Pidgeotto with its bright pink head and tail feathers seemed to prim itself up and fly up as high as it could within the GYM. “I know what I’m doing.” It retorted to the hot-headed Pokemon and began to dance with Robin as both soared about, trying to get close enough to whip up their attacks while avoiding the other. “And following my trainer’s orders are more important than some half-wit pretty boy’s edgy comments.” It snapped. Robin would move first, moving in close to unleash another bout of critically hitting slashes of air currents that would cut through Falkner’s Pidgey and drain most of its health. The Pidgeotto responded in kind as it whipped up a gust of powerful air and unleashed it upon Robin. "I must admit, your Robin is quite the impressive fighter." Falkner added with a smile. Trixie was pretty sure that her Pidgeotto didn't know the move Taunt - couldn't even learn it. But all the same, Robin's crowing proved effective at rousing Falkner's bird from its roost. It flapped high into the air and volleyed a few choice words back at the red Pidgeotto. <Pretty boy?> Robin responded incredulously. <Why thank you. But pretty is too basic a word to convey the beauty of my feathers, don't you think? Why not splendid? Or fabulous? Mag-ni-fi-cent!>
Robin was so busy talking that he failed to notice the other Pidgeotto's attack, as he rode the air currents around the room. He was quickly sucked into the Gust attack and spun around a half dozen times as he squawked to gather his bearings, before emerging, feathers clearly ruffled. Trixie snickered a bit at her Pokemon's obvious bewilderment before saying, "Thanks, Falkner. I can see you really appreciate bird Pokemon, and I'd love to show you some of mine after this battle is over. But for now... Robin! Go ahead and show 'em you're just as much of a fighter as you are nice to look at!"
The Pidgeotto needed no further command, firing off Air Cutter after Air Cutter at his opponent. Trixie winced as one of the wind blades sliced cleanly into the floor, leaving a dent. She was pleased her Pokemon was strong, to be sure.. but would she somehow have to pay for that?

Falkner was in a tough spot after the last round and things seemed to be just about hopeless. His pride as a gym leader however prevented him from giving up despite the odds as he kept a brave face. " It has been some time since someone has given me such a hard time with my own type specialty. Win or lose I have enjoyed this battle quite a lot." There was no doubt in his mind that if Trixie got lucky again this battle would be over and in a last ditch effort he decided to go on an all out offensive hoping for a miracle of some kind. " Pidgeotto use Gust, we have no other choice at this point." He was too late however as Robin had already fired off another Air Cutter. Within seconds the blade of air rushed towards Pidgeotto scoring a direct hit as Falkner was unable to react in time. As if it was not bad enough the attack scored another CRITICAL HIT knocking out his Pidgeotto. " I cannot say I am not upset about losing but you have proven yourself in this battle. It fills me with pride to grant you this Zephyr Badge." As he walked over and handed the badge to Trixie he reached into his pocket and grabbed a few other things as well. " Here is some prize money as well as TM51 Roost. It is one of my favorite moves to use in a pinch. It might help you out if you are ever in a pinch. Also for defeating me your Pokemon will be able to use Rock Smash outside of battles now though I am afraid I do not have the HM to give you so you will have to find one yourself. I wish you the best of luck on your journey." He then started walking towards the exit of the gym to heal his Pokemon having no doubt others would be by to try and earn a badge. We... did it? "We did it!" Trixie exclaimed, leaping out of the trainer's box and running over to Robin. She staggered a bit when he tried to land on her arm - evolution was heavy! "You did an awesome job, Robin!"
Once she had gotten her bearings back, she went to collect the badge and her other winnings from the Gym Leader. "Thanks for the battle!" Trixie was grinning from ear to ear. Even victorious, her parents' lessons about good sportsmanship were drilled into her head, as much as she might have wanted to gloat. "It was really fun watching you show off your specialty. I'm happy to show you any of my other bird Pokemon, too, if you want. Ooh, can I get a selfie?" Okay, maybe that one was a bit out of line. She looked down at the Roost TM, remembering how Falkner's Pidgeotto had almost eliminated all the damage from her first critical Air Cutter. "I'll be sure to make good use of this. Say, do you know of any Flying-types that are also Dark-type?" She would have plenty of research to do with the Pokedex later.
The Zephyr Badge gleamed in her hands, and she took the time to admire it in the light. Her first badge, and seven more to go!
