"Help! HELP!"
She ought to run away, really she thought. But instead Trixie ran toward the sound. She followed a path of muddy footprints deeper into the forest, until she spotted a small circular clearing with a rock in the center. A kid was lying on the ground with a terrified expression on his face. Had he fallen off the rock? Then she heard the snaps and snarls of the Houndour, which had formed a loose V shape, surrounding the child on three sides.
"Hey! Back off!" Trixie shouted, throwing a Pokeball at the leftmost Houndour, but the dog Pokemon batted it away easily. Fortunately, the distraction was enough for the kid to scramble to his feet and rush to Trixie's side. "What's going on? What the hell did you do to piss them off?"
"I--I was just reading!" the schoolchild blubbered. "Please, you gotta help me!"
"These are Houndour. Dark and Fire type. And I wanna catch one!" Trixie said, making the schoolboy wonder if she had even heard what he had said. "Hey, do you have any Pokemon? It'll be easier to fight them if we team up. I'm Trixie, by the way. What's your name?"
"I'm Jimmy. And my Pokemon are..." Jimmy pointed toward the pool, where the three baby Pokemon had up to now been enjoying themselves. A bud, some kind of a bell, and a blobby-looking blue one. She doubted the bud could do much against three Fire-types, but the other two could be useful. It would be up to Jimmy what he would command his Pokemon to do.
For her part, Trixie pulled out two Pokeballs and flung them toward the Houndour. "Pick on somebody your own size!" she shouted, as a Mudkip and a Pancham burst forward and landed in the short grass.

Jimmy is relieved to see someone hear his cry for help. He didn't quite catch the name of the newcomer as she tosses out two Pokemon of her own. The houndour refocus their attention on the new targets with two of them facing off against the new Pokemon. With the distraction, Jimmy calls out a name. "Hey Azy, I need your help to defend against these houndours." A pair of small blue balls comes bouncing in front of Jimmy. The Azurill looks a little timid but sees the other two Pokemon which gives it courage. "By the way, whoever you are, thanks for coming to my rescue. I don't know why these houndours came here. This is a quiet place where my Pokemon and I relax as I sit on the rock to read to them. Maybe we can investigate once this is over. I know I will be much happier when this battle is done. I'm not sure what I have to give you but will try to pay for what you are about to do." The houndour growl and snap at their respective opponents with smoke coming out of a couple of the mouths. They are ready to take a bite out of whoever they can. Wild Encounter Weather: Clear [attr="class","qkt-bkgd triple"] [attr="class","qkt-wild-pkmn"] Abyss LV 10 HP 100% [32/32]

The nervous schoolboy sent out an Azurill, which bobbled along to take its place beside Trixie's two fighters. She listened to Jimmy give his explanation and nodded. Maybe this was a marauding pack of Houndour that just liked to pick on people. "You give Dark-types a bad name, you know," she scolded the pack. "Maybe this will teach you a lesson."
"Marline! Let's start off with your Water Gun!" The Mudkip would start off the battle with a dramatic toss of her head and a wink, before spraying a blast of water from her mouth at the leftmost Houndour. No female dog was going to challenge her for supremacy in this battle!
"Eastwood, now!" As the Houndour attempted to avoid the watery jet, the panda Pokemon would charge in behind it. Hopefully it would surprise the Houndour and give it a good pummeling with its fists.
"And as for you..." Trixie squinted at the blue blob. It was some kind of water Pokemon, right? "Lemme guess, you use bubbles to attack. Defend your trainer and blow some bubbles at that Houndour!" As the left one was too far for it to reach, she pointed to the right one instead. The Azurill let out an attempt at a war cry before spraying a line of bubbles (she had guessed right!) toward the foe.

As on cue fog billowed in and made the dark types seem even more threatening as the fog shrouded them, the boy at Trixie's side whimpered fearfully and he grabbed her arm, or shirt or anything he could get hold of and stayed really close to her. The dogs growled and was on the move even before Trixie was done giving her orders. The dog furthest to the left leered at their opponent but stayed back for now, seemed like she didn't like to get up close and be on the front line. The two others didn't have any of such qualms and was on the new opponents as fast as their legs could carry them. Marline was showered in Embers although that didn't bother her much really, the houndour to the far right billowed a purple sickly looking smog at the azurill and made it cough horrible, it began to shiver a moment later as the poison took effect. Marline decided that the only one houndour not attacking directly was her best target, much to the one right on front of her's surprise. The female dog howled as the water hit her which was joined by the one to the right as it too was bombarded with water. The unharmed in the middle looked frantically between his two pack members and then snarled threateningly at his opponents, this was not the way they had expected this to go. Eastwood decided to go for the least threatening opponent, or perhaps she just looked like an easy target as she complained about the water, and he gave her a few good whacks on her shoulder. She whined and limped back, before she bared her teeth at the little fighting type. "Yeah! That's right! It knows bubble beam, and, and 'elping Hand and Tail Whip! It can also be really charming!" "Keep it together, everyone!" Trixie called out as the Houndours made their moves. Fortunately the leftmost one was content to glare at her opponents, a move which intimidated Marline to some extent causing her to cry out when she was hit by embers. She managed to shake it off easily, however, and blasted the offending Houndour with a spray of water. Azy fought against its opponent bravely but was critically injured by the sickly smog. Trixie was surprised. Wasn't it a Water-type? There was no time to question, however, as the Houndours were regrouping, the one that she had teamed up on finding her footing even if just barely.
Trixie squinted into the fog. It would make the battle more difficult, but did it warrant changing her strategy? Perhaps she ought to leave the left dog Pokemon alone. She didn't seem like all that much of a threat. The one on the right, though, was a problem. She needed to take it out as quickly as possible. "Marline, change of plans! Use Water Gun to hit the one on the right! You too, little bubble guy!" The Pokemon used their attacks in tandem, the two forms of liquid aimed at a common foe.
"Don't worry, little guy. I'll get you patched up." Instead of commanding her Pancham to attack, Trixie pulled out a spray bottle of medicine from her pack and doused the Azurill's wounds with it. It healed the majority of its bruises but could do nothing for the poison, unfortunately. "I know it hurts, but try to tough it out, okay? After we beat these guys, I'll get you properly looked at."

The three Houndour snapped and snarled at their opponents. With a bark from the center Pokemon, they all attacked in tandem. The female on the left howled loudly, boosting the moral of her allies. The three Pokemon yipped and yowled, trying to spook their opponents. The center Houndour let loose more purple smog, thick and sickly. It travelled through the battle field, but quickly and harmlessly dispersed without affecting any of Trixie's Pokemon. The fog already on the battle field obscuring the view enough for the attack to miss. The center Houndour growled in irritation. The right hand Houndour shot burning embers towards Marline, as she seemed like the biggest threat of the three. The embers struck Marline and glanced off her side. They did less damage than they should, not being very effective against the water type, but an attack was an attack, and at least he didn't miss. Jimmy cowered behind Trixie as the three Houndour continued to try and intimidate them. But as Trixie continued to bravely face them, he also stood his ground, wanting to be brave as well. "Yeah Azy, Bubble Beam!" He called out from behind Trixie, as she commanded her own Pokemon. Marline and Azy worked together to spray the far right Houndour with two water attacks. The poor fire type didn't stand a chance. It yelped in pain as it was doused. It tried to back way from the onslaught but soon collapsed to the floor, having fainted from the attacks. Its companions howled and barked as they saw one of their own fall, even more determined to end the fight. "Nice job! One down!" Trixie called out as she saw the rightmost Houndour fall. Now it was two-on-three, and the three was on her side. She lifted up a hand for Jimmy to high-five her. The boy did so with a shaky grin. "Hey... we might actually win this!"
Trixie pointed to the Houndour in the middle. "Let's take that one down first. The left one looks pretty weak, and it hasn't actually attacked any of us directly. Whereas that one -- she pointed to Havoc -- looks like their leader. Maybe if we beat that one, the other one will be scared off." And then I can capture it! she thought.
"O-okay!"
"We'll do this on three." Trixie held up a fist and slowly lifted up her fingers. "One... two... Marline, use Water Gun!"
"Azy, use Bubble Beam!" Jimmy shouted at the same time.
"And Eastwood, follow up with your Arm Thrust!" Trixie commanded.
Both Water-types repeated their attack on the healthy Houndour, their trainers hoping that they wouldn't get lost in the mist as the Houndour's own smog attack did. Eastwood followed up with a charge, coming at the Houndour from the side that it would have to dodge in order to avoid the blasts of liquid.

Helena clawed at the soft earth as the dense fog swept up and billowed around the battlefield. It made it difficult to see her adversaries through the grounded clouds that slipped and slithered around the six battling Pokemon. She folded her hears back against her head and released a low warning growl, baring her fangs as she searched for the shadows and outlines of the small panda, mudfish, and bouncing water-like rodent. She rolled her eyes to her remaining companion, Havoc, and barked in warning as she nodded towards the Pokemon out in the field. Havoc nodded in understanding and lowered his body down tensive towards the ground as he slipped through the tall grasses after his opponent. Helena’s mouth filled with a thick, blackish-purple gas that she spewed from her teeth towards Marlin. The bright blue mudfish with his large green whiskers tried to jump and dodge out of the way of the toxic fumes but couldn’t help to breathe them in deeply. He winced as the poison flowed through his veins, digging in deep and causing him pain with every laborious breath. Havoc fired a high-powered ball of flames that slammed into Eastwood, nearly consuming the small Pancham as it ate away as his fur and tore into his hide. Helena smirked, stomping her foot into the ground and howling triumphantly at how strong their attacks were, sure that they would slowly manage to turn this around. Azy and Marlin attacked together. The small mudfish rodent fired a high-powered shot of water that blasted through the air and slammed against Havoc. The wild fire dog leaped up, crying out loudly, and toppled over as Azy complimented Marlin’s attack with her thick, large bubbles that rammed into the Houndour’s head, causing it to faint. Helen’s eyes narrowed down on her opponent and she growled loudly, warning them with a dangerous bark as Eastwood rushed in and thrusted his arms into the wild canine, knocking her over and causing her to faint. All three dogs would immediately stand up and tuck their tails between their legs. One tore off to the left, down a long trail that seemed to lead off somewhere unknown. A second raced through the tall grasses and around large outcroppings of pine trees to the right. The third shot off down the center, in the opposite direction of Trixie and her Pokemon, and out of the clearing. They could hear the hurried footsteps of the Pokemon slowly growing softer and quieter in the distance, and their lonesome howls as they rushed off and disappeared as quickly as they could. "Pokeball, G--ah!" Trixie stumbled and dropped her backpack on the ground as she attempted to fish out a Pokeball. She dug around, selected the first vaguely spherical object, and lobbed it at the nearest Houndour, only to be thwarted when all three Houndours scrambled to their feet and dashed off in opposite directions. "Hey! Come back here! Cotillion, go!" Another Pokeball went flying through the air and from this one emerged a blue bird with cloud-shaped wings. "Cotillion, don't let 'em get away!" The bird looked back and forth from one, to the other, to the other, before finally whipping around back to the first one. She flew off down the long trail, attempting to keep pace with the wounded and howling dog. "We did it!" Jimmy said, shakily but triumphantly. Next to him was the victorious Azurill, which bounced up to Trixie happily. Trixie rewarded it with a head pat. "Your Pokemon here's pretty strong! I don't know if I could have done it without you!" "About that..." Jimmy said, fishing out a small bell as well. "Do you think... maybe you could take Azy with you? It seemed to really have fun in that battle. But I don't know if I'm strong enough to be a competitive trainer... I really prefer just reading..." "Are you really sure?" The Azurill nodded its head as best as it could, which was quite a feat since it didn't have a neck. "In that case, welcome to the team, Azy. Although I feel like to really make the transition, you could use a new name. How about Sprite? I like Sprite." The Azurill tilted back and forth on its tail, unsure of what to make of this new development. Trixie took the bell from Jimmy, who mentioned something about needing to hurry along home. Suddenly the Azurill shuddered in pain. Its tail failed and it limply collapsed. "Oh no! Az--I mean Sprite! What's wrong with it?" Jimmy's eyes were wide. "I think... they may have gotten poisoned from the fight with the Houndour." Trixie recalled Sprite to its Pokeball. "Don't worry. You'll be safe in there. I'll get you healed up at the Pokemon Center in no time at all." Now that she looked closer, Marline also seemed to be suffering from the same symptoms. From her open backpack, Trixie fished out a cookie with healing herbs baked into it. Another Potion was lobbed at the winded panda Pokemon. "Are we ready to go?" The faint sight of moving clouds that were too small to be clouds appeared around a tree. Trixie and her Pokemon would rush over, eager to see what Cotillion had found at the end of the path. One of the wild firedogs raced through the tall wheatgrasses as it fled. It unleashed a long, singsong howl that echoed behind it, followed by a series of short and fierce growls, and ending in loud yipping barks. Its feet pounded against the soft earth, leaving behind small prints in the sand. The tall green grasses would break up around the long, winding pathway, leaving behind bits of open dirt and sand where various strange tracks all seemed to zip across one another, racing off into different directions. Still, if the trainer chose to follow her other senses, she would soon find herself too jumbled up to listen close enough to follow the baying firedog’s voice as it disappeared down the long, winding pathway. As the pathway opened up, Trixie would wind up in a large sandpit like spot where barely any grasses seemed to grow, with only short crabgrasses springing up in random and sparse locations. Paw marks of various sizes were stamped into the soft sands, with some being barely bigger than a thumbnail and many others being larger than Trixie’s own footsteps. The markings were all mixed up and jumbled over one another, making it nearly impossible to make out which one belonged to the firedog that would have led the trainer to the area. And each footstep seemed to jot off down one of the many and various pathways that broke out from the beaten ground. She would need to study them each individually and carefully, to compare and determine which paw step belonged to the Houndour. Some were large, round paw steps that trekked off through a small pathway with broken twigs scattered about. Some were almost triangular shaped paws with three long claw marks etched across the dirt. And many were small-to-medium sized creatures with long claws of various sizes of feet dug deep into the earth – each spiraling off into different pathways. If the trainer paused and listened closely, perhaps she could still hear the baying of the Pokemon she had been tracking, though considering the time spent hunting it down it was just as likely that it could have been any other wild Pokemon around the area. Please select the correct path to follow.

Try as she might, Trixie was unable to run down the injured dog, though the howls and yelps that pierced through the air every now and then indicated that she must not be too far away. The path would wind and twist, Trixie alternately kicking up dust and squishing grass under her feet as she pounded down the trail. Finally she ended up in a large open area covered in footprints.
Footprints of all shapes and sizes; some of them were even bigger than her own feet, while others didn't look like a foot of any kind at all. But it was only the Houndour she was interested in. That meant she had to look for a dog-like foot, somewhat round but with a few toes sticking out, and not any of the extra large ones, though she did admit to being slightly intrigued what kind of a monster sized Pokemon could leave footprints like those.
So she narrowed it down to the few dog-like ones, carefully stepping beside them and measuring her shoe in the sand to see how big they really were. In the end there was only one pawprint that made sense. "This is it," she said to Cotillion. Being very careful not to disturb any of the other prints, she tiptoed through the sand following what she hoped would be the right path...

The pawprints lead off the path and straight into the undergrowth which made it almost impossible to track, long soft grasses and low plants of all kinds littered the ground. The grass was bended, and a stem of an herb was snapped but if it was from a houndour or something else was hard to say. The ground was still humid and the smell of wet leaves was heavy, birds chirped in the treetops above. Cotillion would be the first to spot the little scrap of dark fur, which was stuck on a bush. It was dirty as if the one it had been pulled off had been laying on the ground. A bit further ahead a pawprint similar to the one Trixie had chosen was visible in a little spot of mud, half hidden behind some long dry grass. It seemed like they were on the right track, after a while Trixie would realize that the forest had become eerie silent. No birds were chirping, nothing rummaged through the underground, no rustling in the leaves of the treetops. A gentle breeze blew past and the light clouds traveled on the sky but otherwise the area was as silent as it could be. Five minutes later of more moving forward, Trixie and her pokemon would suddenly be able to hear a howl in the distance straight ahead of them. It was heart wrenching and desperate and definitely made by the same pokemon as the one they were looking for! Suddenly something snapped around Trixie's ankle as she moved forward and tightened closely, cutting into her. If she wasn't prepared she had a high risk of falling and her ankle was stuck. When she checked, she'd first see a thing metal wire going from her leg and to a nearby bush, a loop was closed tight around her ankle. A snare! For Trixie with human hands and potential knowledge that the more she pulled in it, the more it would tighten around her ankle, and if she didn't know that, she'd figure it out really quickly. If she followed the other end of the wire, she'd find it was tied to a peg hammered securely into the ground. While it wasn't so bad for someone like Trixie to get caught in one, it was something entirely with a wild pokemon. Before Trixie would manage to free herself completely, she'd notice that when she gave the wire a tug, a faint bell would chime. A moment after a zubat would zoom in and quickly locate the caught creature with its echolocation, it paused surprised and then used it again to get an idea of the caught creature's size and shape. It seemed like it couldn't figure out what to do with that information but then decided to go with the training it had gotten about how to handle what was caught in the snares: stall them and keep them from freeing themselves by confusing them. A rather familiar feeling of supersonic washed over Trixie with the screams the zubat released at her. A lone zubat [Lv 10] has arrived and seems uncertain but still tries to confuse Trixie with Super Sonic.

It was somewhat of a challenge to follow the prints, but Trixie did her best, and after a while as the trail thinned out the other prints disappeared until there was only the occasional pawprint to follow. Cotillion let out a cheep and alerted Trixie to something she had seen: a ragged clump of fur stuck on the end of a bush. From the coloration, it definitely looked like they were on the right track. Following the footprints, she continued on, until she noticed that the world had become eerily silent.
It was almost like a dream; as if the surrounding Pokemon had all fled, or gone to sleep, though it was still the middle of the day. The only sounds she could hear were her own breath, her feet against the ground, and Cotillion's flaps. Nevertheless, the sight of another footprint urged her on, as if she were being led by a powerful force. Finally after what seemed like an eternity, an ear-piercing howl shattered the calm. Trixie began to race forward, only to find something yanking her leg back!
Fortunately she was well trained in falling, and managed to hit the dirt with only minimal scrapes. When she looked back, however, she realized in horror there was a snare around her ankle. Tugging on it only seemed to increase the pressure and after one attempt of this, she stopped and scooted back over, hoping there was some easy way to untie it. As she followed the wire back along the ground, she would see a stuck peg - presumably the origin of the trap - and hear a bell softly chime. "Is that you, Cotillion?" The bird shook her head no for an answer.
Was she hearing things? She could swear she heard something batty in the air, faint echoes of her childhood field trip to Mt. Moon as she worked at the peg, trying to pry it loose. But she was nowhere near a cave. Unfortunately for Trixie she would soon be proven right as a Zubat appeared out of nowhere and started using Supersonic on her.
"Not again notagain NOTAGAIN!!!"
In desperation Trixie grabbed a random Pokeball and threw it, sending out Marline the Mudkip. "Do something!" the trainer screamed as she tried to cover her ears. Well, Marline would do something all right, that infernal screeching really was annoying. She formed a green-blue shield around herself to Protect herself, blocking out all the noise within the shield... and leaving Trixie to suffer. It was technically something, was it not? Marline herself seemed cool as a cucumber. Fortunately for the hapless trainer, Cotillion helpfully stuffed her cotton-like wings into the girl's ears, which blocked out the Supersonic enough to at least let her hear herself think. The bird Pokemon wanted to be helpful, so she had resolved to tough it out in order to support her trainer. She hoped it would end soon - if only she could battle and protect Trixie at the same time...

The bright blue bat couldn’t quite figure out what he was facing. Something had obviously ensnared itself in the trap – something huge, based on his sonar. Every time the bat would screech out loudly as he used his Supersonic, he kept getting the same strange reading – like a small bear or a very large beaver. When Cotillion stuffed its wings in its trainer’s ears, it seemed to confuse the bat even more. Did this strange beaver-bear managed to randomly grow thick tufts around its head to protect it? The bright blue bat screeched out loudly in frustration and flitted high into the canopies above as it tried to keep the group occupied. However, another Pokemon appeared. The Zubat could hear the Pokemon’s feet rustling in the tall grass as Marlin appeared. The quick snap of a twig and crunch of dead leaves underneath gave away Marlin’s location. The bat screeched out, using his sonar to scan the new Pokemon that had appeared and smiled with relief. This was something that scanned as a bit more familiar to the bat – and was definitely a rare find that it knew would be much appreciative. However, it wasn’t ensnared! As Marlin’s protect surrounded the Pokemon, the Zubat would shoot out a mean look by opening its mouth wide and revealing the long, sharp teeth hidden inside its jaws. It scowled, scrunching up its lips and creating the creepiest and scariest look it could muster to lock its opponent in the midst of the battle. Something would also sound in the distance. Feet thumped, thumped through the thick undergrowth off in the distance. The sounds of small plants snapping in half echoed in a hushed voice as the forest shuddered. A brown-haired man would cut down the thick branches of a nearby bush and whack away the long green grasses as he carved his own path through the forest. “Oh, just a useless girl.” He huffed. He turned around to check on something – and when he moved slightly out the way, Trixie would see a cage with a familiar black furred canine trapped inside. “Child, what are you doing out here? Shouldn’t you be home doing homework??” The Hunter inquired, demanding to know what Trixie was up to. The Zubat opened its mouth wide. Its fangs glinted in the sunlight, but beyond was only a yawning abyss. It was into this abyss that Marline stared. Her vision narrowed to a point as it felt like she was getting sucked in, even through her protective barrier! What countless horrors stirred beyond that gaping maw? And as the Zubat scrunched up its lips to look even more menacing, Marline let out a wordless gasp. For as she gazed into that abyss, the abyss gazed back.
It was truly horrifying. She could not comprehend such insanity. She stayed rooted to the spot, unable to advance nor retreat. Her mind swirled with thoughts great and terrible, as she could feel her sensibility slowly being leeched away...
"Marline, use Water Gun!"
Ah, yes. That was a thought she could understand. She blinked, shook her head a bit, and the terrors in her mind dissipated. She was awestruck no more. Then she gathered up a burbling stream of water in her mouth, and sprayed the resulting jet at the offending bat Pokemon, attempting to knock it out of the air. Maybe she couldn't move, but she could definitely still fight! That Zubat was going to pay for screwing with her like that!
A man would appear from the underbrush, whacking away at the bushes with a long knife. Trixie looked up at him, still trying to work the snare from around her ankle, as he looked down his nose at her. Useless? How dare he! Her eyes widened as he stepped to the side and she saw a Houndour cowering in a cage behind him. From the look of its ragged fur and exhaustion, it surely had to be the same Houndour she had defeated, and then started chasing. "I don't have to go to school. I'm a Pokemon Trainer," she said, "and an assistant researcher for Professor Elm. Who are you, though? Is this your trap?" She tugged her leg with irritation, still held down to the ground by the snare and peg.
But wait... if that Houndour belongs to this man... then with her injuries, why isn't she safe in a Pokeball? Something was not sitting right. "Why've you got that Pokemon in a cage?" she asked, narrowing her eyes at the hunter. Cotillion chirped something as well, flapping her wings free now that Trixie was no longer in immediate danger of Zubat-induced confusion.
