14. Large Humid Rain with a Side of Thunders [F]

When Ethan woke up the next day, he didn't realize it was still early. In fact, it was earlier than the time most people would have gotten up for work. He got himself a cozy Pokemon Center breakfast, along with his Pokemon for their meals, and then prepared to start packing. When he had finished, he estimated that if he left right then, he would still beat the work hour traffic, and he did that.

When he reached the edge of the city, he saw the clouds were dark and almost as if readied to rain again. Soon enough, after a couple steps in Route 35, the weather began pouring a warm summer special of large humid rain to go with a side of flashing lightning and a deafening thunders. He quickly put on his rain coat and carefully walked along the route, as to not get his feet muddy. This route should not take him a long time to go between the cities, and he should likely get to Ecruteak in late afternoon the latest.

A blonde guy in a red trench coat walks down the route not paying any attention to what is in front of him since he is so focused on the four objects in his hand. As Ethan gets closer to him, he thinks he sees four Pokeballs being tossed in the air by the man until one of the balls opens its eyes and looks directly at Ethan. The juggler keeps up the routine until his foot lands in a puddle and he almost slips. He barely catches his balance and then notices Ethan in front of him. A few more steps and they would have collided. It would have been rather explosive meeting since the Voltorbs don't like stopping all of a sudden unless it is being called into a battle.

"My apologies, I almost ran into you. I get so focused on my training that I forget to watch where I am going. The pouring down rain doesn't make traveling easier but does add in a challenge for training which is why I am out in weather like this. So my fellow trainer, what brings you this direction? Would it be seeking a thrilling challenge? If it is, I can provide some enlightening experiences for you if you are to it."

Ethan didn't see this strangely costumed guy until they almost met and bumped into each other. "Heeey there, buddy, you certainly almost bumped into me." He reacted after hearing the man speak. However, the content of the man's response was even more confusing.

"What are you training for exactly?" Ethan asked. "Did Whitney asked for a juggling act? This certainly don't look cute enough for her taste." Having beat the Goldenrod gym leader recently, Ethan would know a thing or two about the gym leader's taste. He wanted to ask about the costume too, but that can be saved for the farther into this battle. Ethan didn't mind the battle, but he was just perplexed by this man's choices in this weather.

"I guess I am just heading toward Ecruteak for the next gym challenge." The young trainer responded to the clown's questions. He grabbed a Pokeball and sent out an equally jesting Pokemon.

"Haphrost, start with a Double Team, then Ice Fang!" He ordered. The jiggling ice type made many copies of himself, and then got ready for a frosty Voltorb flakes.

The man smiled broadly but only until Ethan mentioned Whitney, then the juggler's face grimace disgusted.
"Whitney, why do everybody keep believing I'm just training for a show to one overrated gym leader?" He complained and placed a hand on his heart as if it hurt by the mere thought of it, "why are everyone putting gym leaders up on such high piedestals, they are nothing but simple trainers who focus on strength and beating others up!"
He stomped his foot, swiped his hand down his side and lifted his chin proudly, "No, I am not training to show Whitney, my art is too great to be aimed at just one person, my art is for the whole world to see!" He declared.

He sent Ethan a flashy smile, "I am the great Juggler Irwin, and I'm training to awe the people of Goldenrod! To spread smiles and wonders, to show the world there is more to life than just butting heads." His four voltorbs rolled around him in unison.
"Tesla, you need to keep a bit more distance, it needs to be a full circle," he corrected one of his voltorbs, which slowed down a bit to make space, Irwin watched them critically for a moment before he gave a gesture to them, which clearly meant they should stop.
"Tesla, you're up first," he decided and one of the voltorbs rolled forward, thunder rumbled and Irwin grinned.
"Let's show we can compete with the flash and bang of the storm! Sonic Boom!" He shouted and was followed by another loud rumble from the sky.

The red and white pokemon began to jump up and down, the boom it made was louder for each landing, until it sent a shock wave at the snorunt and knocked him off his feet.
Haphrost was quickly back up on his feet and the voltorb stared as the ice pokemon ran surprisingly fast on his stubby little legs and soon looked to be more than one of him on the field.
"Don't let it confuse you! Send a boom in all directions!" Irwin called encouragingly but Haphrost had run himself warm by now and bit down with invisible teeth which sent a chill through the voltorb. It affected the voltorb enough for it to not being able to concentrate on making another sonic boom.

Irwin looked a bit annoyed at it but didn't say anything.
"Say, young man, you didn't really sound thrilled to fight the next gym leader, then why do it? Isn't there something else you'd like to do with your life?" He asked Ethan with a bright smile.

Ethan grinned a little, at least they have in common that people idolize Gym Leaders a little too much. "I understand if you don't like WHhitney, or other gym leaders." He replied, trying to correct the tone he gave from the conversation. "Well, Irwin, all your Pokemon are just heads with no arms or tails or ears or anything. Just heads with face." He joked along.

The opponent sent out Tesla, not bad for a name, and used Sonic Boom. Thankfully, only the first one hit the Snorunt, since the second one missed, therefore giving the young ice type more room to take some hits. The move Double Team was quite helpful, as Ethan hadn't experienced with it much. He wondered if he should give it more Double Team for fun, but that would mean he would have to be in the rain for longer. It's humorous to see your opponent missed.

"Maybe I'm not sounding thrilled right now. Maybe another day I'll be more excited to fight Morty. I've been in Goldenrod a little too long, and it's time to find a new place as a change of pace." He began replying. "I am an aspiring DJ from Hoenn, but I'm still making my name out here in Johto. There's a difference in culture in this region. For now, I am looking for inspirations from my travel, you know?"

"Haphrost, go for an Ice Fang again!" he ordered his cheeky ice type, who was beginning to giggle at his opponent for missing.

"Have you thought adding more, cheeky and humorous Pokemon to your act?" he asked his opponent, curiously.

Irwin frowned when Ethan pointed out how his Pokemon didn’t have arms or bodies or really…anything. He turned to his Pokemon and tapped them on their sides, correcting their postures as they all kept the perfect circle around them. They jumped up and down in the rain and began to squeal while glowing with a strange, electric pulse. “Good good…keep is up…Hyundai, don’t fail me now! You’re not the star of the show, but you are their right-hand sphere!” Irwin warned with a harsh glare, before addressing Ethan’s lighthearted comment. “You don’t seem to get the importance of my Voltorb. No matter. I don’t need to put on a show for some two-bit GYM Leader or a trainer who can’t see just how perfect my round Pokemon are! Their perfectly spherical shape – not burdened by arms or a body – make them just…perfect!”

Yep, it seemed like Irwin was going to wear out the phrase ‘perfect’ pretty quickly. Though, as a loud clap of thunder tore through the dark clouds and was quickly chased by a bright spark of lightning, Irwin jumped up thoughtfully with one finger fully extended in the air like he had a brilliant idea. “Tesla…sweety…Did you see that bolt of lightning? It’s telling us something! It says to SPARK up our world! Be a dear and SPARK up the competition, please? And…do it with a little more…pizazz this time, ok?!” Haphrost moved in fast as his stats took on wild changes. Where one would get a boost, another would fall, and in rapid succession as the Snorunt was a completely different battler in nearly every round. The Voltorb squealed, spinning around to try and keep up with its opponent, though it stood absolutely no chance. Haphrost lungs with sharp fangs made of ice and bit down on the Voltorb, causing it to collapse on the spot. She managed to send off one final spark in the aftermath of the battle.

“Hmm…” Juggler Irwin scratched the bottom of his chin and thought to himself. Then, he began to shake his head heavily. “Oh…no, no, no…that won’t do. Won’t do at all! Tesla, please move…we’re going to have to work on your performance some more.” The Voltorb all began to spin erratically around Irwin until they finally stopped on a new one that would leap out in front of Ethan in preparation of their battle. “Ahh…perfect! My right-hand sphere! Hyundai, are you ready to show us what a REAL performance is like?!” The Voltorb growled in agreement and stared at Ethan with a determined expression. “If you’re looking for inspiration, dear, then look no further!” The Juggler fanned his cape and gestured all around them. “Inspiration lives and breaths in every inch of everything! Find it, claim it, and never let it go! And…my act isn’t cheeky, though your performance…solid F-. That’s telling…ain’t it?” Irwin glared at Ethan’s critical review of their current performance.

Ethan narrowed his eyes now at the opponent's choice of naming his Pokemon. Were they all named after automobile manufacturer's brand? What's the name of the other two Voltorb? Toyota? General Motors? Ford? Chevrolet? Maybe he was a mechanic turned juggler, or mechanic with side hobby of juggler, or he was an automobile enthusiast but can't afford to drive. Thankfully, his thought was interrupted by the crack of thunder, because the juggler was not making any more sense to him.

"Please don't tell me you pick next move based on... the inspiration of what the weather is, or how you feel," Ethan commented at the way Irwin picked his last move. If it wasn't raining now, he would be scratching his head, but making his hair any wetter wasn't the goal right now.

"So, was Tesla the star or the left hand?" Ethan asked, a little confused by Irwin's nicknaming the position of his voltorbs, and how he kept them apart.

"Hey now, I didn't ask for your opinion about my performances. Or you give me a F- because I fainted your Voltorb? If it is, that sounds personal to me," Ethan replied to that absurd comment. "Haphrost, now go for another Ice Fang!"

Irwin knew Ethan would never understand his ways as only one with a performers background could understand his methodology. To most others he seemed like a nut case but he did not care as long as he retained the respect of his audience and fellow performers. " The weather is just one of many marvelous things I used for inspiration but how can I not match natures beauty with Sparks of my own? The sky is the limit and my performance is far from over." Ethan's second question however did sting a bit as Irwin loved all of his Voltorb and he struggled to come up with some answer.

" All of my Voltorb are the stars you see, Tesla is my left hand, Hyundai my right, Edison my left foot, and Einstein my right foot and together we all share in the limelight." As for Ethan's final point Irwin had an easier time answering as he had nothing against a Pokemon getting knocked out if done so with style instead of brute force. " Oh no, quite contrary, knocking out one of my Voltorb would be a great part of your performance. You just lack any grace and style whatsoever instead relying on brute force. Jocks and bullies rely on muscles but true artistic talent in battle takes so much more."

By now Irwin had stalled for enough time to try and attack again hoping things would get better soon. This battle had been a nightmare for him deep down though he would never dare to admit it. He hoped for a miracle as he ordered Hyundai to attack. " Let the lightning strike and the storm blow over our foes, Hyundai use Spark and let's give it our best performance yet." Haphrost struck first however and the young Snorunt ran forwards with his mouth wide open as he took a bite out of Hyundai with ice covered fangs. The attack failed to cause a flinch or freeze but the damage was scary enough.

Hyundai could not paralyze Haphrost either with it's Static ability so it tried to unleash a Spark attack to try again. It also failed to do anything other than damage but Haphrost was finally getting low on health. As Irwin watched his plan take another setback he started to wonder if a career change was in order. His performance so far had not been great and to make things worse Hyundai had no hope of catching up with Haphrost at his current speed level.

Ethan slowly laughed again at Irwin's response to him, as the foe named his Voltorb army. "So your Voltorbs are named after a little bit of vehicles, and a little of famous scientists. You got a four wheel drive here." He tried to cracked another joke.

"Why would you think I am using brute force? My Snorunt is barely larger than your Voltorb, and he only got a cold tooth," Ethan replied, implying that Snorunts are basically a foot taller than standard Voltorbs. "What exactly is your criteria for performances?"

"What if it is not raining? How would a normal cloudy sky or clear sky inspires your Pokemon battles?" Ethan asked Irwin about his unusual method of battle strategy. Ethan was beginning to think the opponent was a little bit of pretentious, snobby teen who was going through a phase trying to impress some other people. Or maybe, Ethan was being judgmental, and this man was seeing beauty in nature a little more than he did.

"Well, that Aftermath ability surprised me, I'll give you that. BUT, I will not make that mistake twice!" He declared gleefully. "Haphrost, this time use Powder Snow!"

The now erratic ice type moved quickly around on the field, picking a spot he'll prefer that would be a good range. Then, he inhaled air before exhaling an icy breath of freshly made snow from his small body.

Irwin shook his head with laughter. The smile that wrapped itself from one ear to the other across his face showed that the juggler was able to take Ethan’s joke in good fun. He raised a hand and scratched at his chin as he waved towards Ethan with the other hand. “Clever, my friend, clever!” Juggler Irwin commented, then started to applaud Ethan. He would simply walk around the two Pokemon that were currently battling their hearts out in the midst of the thunder and lightning showers to greet Ethan more personally with a handshake (and if Ethan let him, a hug!). “You know…” Juggler Irwin dropped his voice just above a whisper and glanced around the area as though they were being watched. The question remained, though – by who? “We could use a comedian on the team.”

Then Irwin would immediately jump back into position so that his Voltorbs were surrounding him in a grand circular path. “Of course, if you had style, that is!” He swung his cape out at his sides and fluffed it the edges a bit, trying to make himself look large and important as he did so. He placed a hand to the side of his face and turned halfway away as though as Ethan began bombarding him with several well placed questions. “Well…for one, you’re just attacking. No thought on how it appears! No grand performance! All the world is a stage, and you’re just meant to be a spectator. Hyundai, please show them with a grand Spark that lights up a room!” Juggler Irwin snapped his fingers and tapped his feet as he instructed his Voltorb to attack.

Voltorb growled and rolled around a bit as large sparks began to zap around its hard shell. The danced off of its body, with some shooting straight up into the heavens themselves. The lightshow attracted a large bolt of electricity from the dark clouds above. The lightning shook the land and snapped against the bark of an old tree, causing it to bend and sway from the force. “Now, THAT’S a show!” Juggler Irwin applauded loudly. Snorunt shook and shivered as it began to kick up a swirling wind of snow that sparkled and dazzled brilliantly as it slammed into Hyundai, leaving the Pokemon frozen in its spoke. “Oh…ho ho! Amazing! Simply amazing! What a show, my man, what a show! Your grade had just raised to a C-. Keep it up, you’re getting somewhere!” He laughed, though frowned at his own Pokemon. “Though Hyundai…that’s not a pretty frozen appearance you’ve struck. What have I said about moving with deliberation? Every step is a grand performance! Remember?”

Now the question remained on how he still managed to put on a grand display for a crowd even in the most mundane of weather conditions. Part of Irwin wanted to ask Ethan why he would even entertain a mundane display with his Pokemon. The other part remembered what he had said earlier and began to think heavily about the idea. “In a cloudy day the usually bright daylight is not so. It’s more dim and moody.” He smiled and gestured towards one of his Voltorb at his side. “We bring back that beauty with Edison’s Light Screen and follow it up with its Self-Destruct. What a way to call on the oppressive nature of a cloud day than with a big explosion?! With clear skies, they already bring such vibrancy and life! Eddison’s Rollout shows the energy that such days pack and its Sonic Boom resonates the emotions that it harbors!” He added quickly with a bright smile.

Ethan grinned at the opponent's response, and then replied, "Sadly, I don't make good jokes all the time. Maybe in another life. Coming up with jokes all the time just isn't my thing, you know?" But then he stopped himself when the opponent mentioned style. He sighed and just don't understand this man's eccentric manner, entirely.

"I might be from Hoenn, but contest was never my thing. I don't like to be the center of attention that much." He responded nonchalantly. "You will just have to deal with my unartistic performance of a battle." He then watched as the man gave a command, and the Voltorb made a brilliant spark against a tree. Thankfully, his joyous Snorunt returned with a powder snow that made Voltorb a frosted cereal for a Steelix's appetite. Before he made the next move, he noticed the Voltorb was frozen in a shell of ice, while the trainer blabber his inspiration for picking moves.

"Thanks for letting me known about Edison. We should prepare for that." Ethan replied with a smile, and then began looking through his bag for a berry to give to his Pokemon. "You did great so far, Haphrost, munch on this Oran Berry and then go for a Double Team!" He seized the frosty opportunity to prepare for the other two Voltorbs that would come up next.

Irwin’s eye perked up when Ethan mentioned Hoenn. That was the homeland of style! Everyone who was anyone only lived and BREATHED Hoenn! Why – the streets, the people, the Pokemon, the air itself! “Tell me, young sir!” Irwin raised his hands dramatically and timed his hand claps to coincide with a loud clap of thunder. “Why on earth did you ever leave the most wonderful place on earth for drab and dreary Johto?! It just simply can’t be so!” Did he owe some type of support for something he created and abandoned with another? Was he on the run from some outlandish thugs that knew his name and had his home address? Could he have simply swam across the ocean on a dare and didn’t have the strength to swim all the way back? Maybe an Abra Teleported him over and now he was stuck forever more?

The possibilities were endless! Irwin’s imagination ran wild with conspiracy theories of just why this poor old sap was here. “Hyundai, dear…please try to thaw yourself off. Use your Spark as heat and let it build up and radiate from within.” The red-and-white spherical Pokemon growled underneath a thick sheet of ice. It tried to roll back and forth while a bright yellow light emanated from within. Though, no matter how hard the Pokemon tried to thaw itself through, it remained nothing more than a block of ice stuck in the midst of the battlefield. “Remember, style my friend, style!” Irwin wagged a finger at his Pokemon with a heavy sigh and turned back to his opponent. “Did you simply leave because you couldn’t fit in with the cool kids of Hoenn? Hmmm?” Irwin daringly asked.

Haphrost created copies of himself all around the battlefield. There were quite possibly a thousand tiny Snorunts standing around and shivering to themselves as though they were the ones that were freezing, instead of Hyundai. They spun around in their makeshift spots and stared daringly at the frozen Voltorb that could only light itself up inside of the block of ice. “Oh, trust me. You’ll get a grand performance soon enough! Oh, Haphrost. That clone over there is too far right. This one here is too much in the center. And this one? That shake is unbelievable! Let’s put some effort in it, shall we?!” Irwin very boldly started instructing Haphrost’s Double Team as though he were the director of the stage.

When he mentioned Hoenn, Ethan could feel the opponent changed his tune again. "Oh. Hoenn was definitely a nice region, since I did grew up there. However, I wanted to improve myself and explore new area, which was why I chose the Johto region. It's kind of hard to become better in a place of familiarity."

Ethan watched as his opponent tried to order his Voltorb, but it was frozen in a block of ice and immobile. It made some noise inside the ice though, so it would probably thaw soon. The trainer then got confused again, when Irwin was making comments about his ice type's double team.

"Don't worry about the double team. We're not trying to be contest coordinators. Didn't we just established that we're heading toward the next gym? Haphrost, go for another Powder Snow!" Ethan replied, trying to get the man to have a topic they might agree on. "I was just trying to make a name for myself, and I could care less what the cool kids think. I'm in my 20's, actually." Did he misinterpreted what the other party meant? Did Irwin thought he was a teenager or a kid? Haphrost giggled before readying a Powder Snow to aim at the opponent.

Irwin scratched his chin thoughtfully and considered Ethan’s words. A flash of lightning shot through the dark and crackled in the distance as the rain poured on. It’s absolutely boring on some days. So I think if Hoenn is to you what Johto is to me, I completely understand.”

Back to the fight at hand and Hyundai was still struggling in the large block of ice. Bright electrical pulses zapped around the red-and-white Pokemon as it struggled and tried its best to defrost itself. “Hyundai, you need to try harder. And with style please…” Then, with widened eyes, he gulped at the severity of the situation. “You know what? I’ll let you forego style just this once if you can just defrost yourself, Hyundai…” He muttered, unsure of his Pokemon’s chances. The small triangular-shaped Pokemon would solidify that answer as it jumped and spun in the air, creating a large gust of powdery snow that rivaled the pouring rains and slammed into her opponent. Hyundai cried loudly from the strength of the attack before fainting while still trapped in the block of ice.

“Here, buddy…rest.” Irwin frowned and recalled Hyundai into its Pokeball as his orbed Pokemon spun and jumped around at the tips of his feet. “Edison, you’re up! Remember to give them your best performance yet! Don’t let me down – you’ve got to show up both Hyundai and Tesla now!” He commented and clapped his hands together as the red-and-white sphere jumped out center stage to battle against Ethan and his Pokemon. “So…since you’re dead set on the next GYM…I hear Morty’s got a killer Gengar on his team. What’s your plan young man?” Irwin flipped a lock of hair out of his face as he asked Ethan.

Ethan simply nodded when Irwin explained to himself how Johto it was to him. He decided that the man understood what he meant, and no further explanation was needed. He then watched as the opponent wanted to encourage his Pokemon to thaw from the ice, but it was not helpful. The endless rain and roaring thunder helped Ethan to hide his silence. Although, he was glad the freezing suddenly worked internally, as it helped him to have his Pokemon boosted its evasion again. Soon enough, the Powder Snow knocked the Voltorb out of this park. Irin wasted no time switching to another one of his Voltorb.

"My plan? As you can see so far, this Snorunt can be really good with his Double Team. I just needed to train him up so he can take and dish out better." He replied to Irwin, smiling at his plan. "I also have a Raticate with Crunch, and I'm sure my other Pokemon can help out as needed."

Ethan looked at Edison the Voltorb for a bit as he bent his back a little forward. "Hmm. I really can't tell them apart myself. Haphrost, go for an Ice Fang on this one this time!" He ordered, and his ice type Pokemon got ready for a crunchy ball.
