The elder alolan couple wasn't going to chase after the helper like the young trainer. They knew where it and the amulet was so it would be rather pointless, besides Sara should be able to do this part of the trial without them holding her hand, now she got an idea of what she was supposed to do. They would be there for the battle of course, probably out of site to not spoil or accidently mess with it, leaving it up to the Totem to handle it and finish the test.
The bidoof was surprisingly fast despite its small chubby legs and that they clearly wasn't made for running long distances. Had they had a race, the bidoof and Tartarus on a flat surface the rattata would have won easily, but in an area the bidoof knew from birth with all its shortcuts and main goal to disappear out of sight, Tartarus stood no chance. He easily could keep the smell in his nose and would be able to find it, if there were any, but the snow was not giving away much and the bidoof knew to run on places where the snow had already been kicked up by other wild pokemon, but the rattata felt pretty certain they were on the right track as they chased through the forest.
Right until they reached the end of it and stepped out into a barren, rocky landscape with a tall hille towering in front of them. The wind howled around and had blown the snow away and was surprisingly warm so it was melting the rest making the air full of humidity. Even if the bidoof had been here and left any smell, the wind had blown it away a long time ago, and the rocky ground was too hard for any pawprints to be put, now what?
If they listened some faint cries could be heard in the wind, from the top of the hill came one. It would be a steep climb but doable for someone as young and energetic and Sara and Tartarus. The hill clearly had been bigger ones, since the remains of an old rockslide was spreading out from the bottom of it, and hadn't it been so windy and rocky it would usually have grown over a long time ago. Now it was full of crumbled boulders and tons of rolling pebbles. Another cry came from that direction, which they could chose to check out as well, they would just have to walk carefully to not slip. A creek had cut its way through the rocks and was trickling its way from its visible spring half way up the hill and continued to disappear into the forest. A very familiar cry was heard in that direction. And last but not least, a few low bushes had managed to force their roots into the rocks and was clinging to life in the harsh wind, something was rummaging around in there and making quiet noises. Perhaps it was the bidoof who had hidden there?

Sara considered her four options carefully. As she listened to the calls that were coming from the various areas, she wondered which way the Bidoof had run off in. She could hear Tartarus ahead of her as she trekked her way through the thick undergrowth, losing sight of Tartarus from time to time as they continued to pursue the bidoof- it was no surprise that the trial elders weren’t following, the undergrowth was thick and hard to navigate through. For a few minutes of running through the woods, Tartarus would sprint ahead, chitter excitedly and then run back to find Sara with her foot caught in the brush, which he would agitatedly gnaw through in a flash with his powerful teeth before urging Sara forward once again. Tartarus was honed in on its target, something perhaps unusual for the small rat pokemon to do, but Tartarus typically didn’t have the opportunity to lean into its instincts and follow its nose towards a foe to battle. The bidoof had proven to be a worthy opponent after all- even if it did tend to run away when things got dicey.
As the path opened up into a clearing with a tall hill, Sara took the opportunity to catch her breath. “Did you see where the bidoof went, Tartarus?” Sara asked excitedly. Tartarus considered the landscape carefully, its ears flicking wildly as calls came from nearly every direction. Exasperated it shrugged, bounding forward anyways and stretching its legs out wide in as intimidating a posture as it could manage, presenting itself as a barrier between whatever pokemon might emerge and Sara, again chittering softly to itself in preparation for a fight. “Tar-tar-tar-tar-atatata” it squeaked. Sara tried to follow Tartarus’ gaze, but it didn’t seem directed at anything in particular. “Alright then, I suppose we’ll just take a chance. Too bad I didn’t get a good listen to its voice before when you were fighting…” Sara said, somewhat disappointed in herself as a trainer. “Let’s go check out that rockslide first. If we don’t find anything there, maybe we can get a better vantage point from the top of the hill.” Sara suggested. Tartarus shifted its body slightly, pointing its nose in the direction of the fallen rocks as if to agree, before taking measured steps towards the pile of rocks. Tartarus didn’t want to be caught off guard, and it was slightly frustrated with itself that its foe had managed to escape its sight, and trying not to focus on the frustration that its trainer had been stuck in the forest.

The hill was quite a little scary to travel on, as small stones rolled and slipped every time Sara continued down the path. Thankfully going slow made sure that neither she nor her pokemon would end up falling just like the boulders. The rockslide that had happened long ago wasn't the only thing that was interesting to see, however. As the two continued further down careful with each step the sounds that they had chosen to follow only grew louder in sound that they were getting closer. The rocks only grew heavier and finally at the base of the old rockslide seemed to be opening in the hill where a pokemon must have made its den. At the entrance of the den seemed to be the pokemon that they were chasing the bidoof took notice of them before it turned on its little legs and ran deeper into the den. They had been tasked to follow it after all, so into the den they must go as it led them further inside to a big opening area. There in the very back of the den was a pedestal where the prize of the quest waited, but it was not so easy. A rather large pokemon stood in front of it, the pokemon that they had been tasked to come after. The totem pokemon stood waiting it's tail slapping against the ground as it watched the two come forward. <"Have you come to challenge me?"> it asks and waits for a response. <"Show me your strength if you want this amulet."> Totem Bibarel [Lv 12] is challenging you for the Amulet. Which pokemon do you start with?

"Ah! There it is!" Sara said, pointing excitedly as she made her way over the fallen rocks of the rockslide, spotting the bidoof inside of a small opening in the hill. "Let's get it, Tartarus!" Sara commanded. Tartarus quickly sprung into action with renewed purpose seeing the small rodent once more- a target to chase after. Sara quickly followed behind Tartarus, once again her human feet getting in the way of the rapid movements that the smaller pokemon were capable of. She stumbled slightly but stayed persistent doing her best to keep up. As Sara followed the bidoof and her rattata further into the den, Sara couldn't help but feel nervous. There was a definite sense of foreboding as she clambered through the den, it was dark and ominous.
THWACK THWACK
Sara heard the noise before she could see what was ahead of her. She quickly reached around her back reaching towards a lantern attached to her backpack. With her arm behind her back her fingers fumbled in the dark reaching for the small switch on top of the device. She flicked it on, and with a dull glow the den was brightened up just enough to make out all of the figures in the room. The Bibarel stood intimidatingly close to Sara, which took her by surprise. "Whoa!" Sara said, taking a few steps backwards. Tartarus chittered with excitement, but its wounds from the previous battle were still obvious. "Tartarus, you need a few moments to rest. Don't worry, you've got others on your team! We'll call you if we need help!" Sara said, pulling Tartarus' ball from her waist and pointing it at Tartarus. In a whining defeated chitter, Tartarus slowly disappeared, its red form seemingly trying to avoid being pulled back into the Pokeball. "Alright, for this battle I think it's time to call out Avery!" Sara quickly replaced Tartarus' pokeball on her pokeball belt with Avery's, and tossed the ball.
Avery burst from the ball landing on all fours quietly. Sara took a step back. "Are you ready to battle Avery?" She said. Avery looked at their opponent dimly lit from the lantern light and nodded. "Alright then, lets hit them hard and lets hit them fast! Go ahead Avery, use Mega Drain!"

Avery was sent out to meet the large bibarel head-to-head. With surprising swiftness, the beaver pokemon curled up into a tight ball and began to roll towards Avery at tremendous speed. One could even say it was startling how fast it moved. Avery would try to get out of the way of the barreling bibarel, but the rolling mass bounced off a rock to switch directions and plowed right over the treecko before any escape could be made. At least it was a glancing first hit...Avery managed to get back to his feet and drain some health back from the totem pokemon, restoring himself back up with one move. However, if Sara knew anything about rollout, then she'd know that it grew steadily in power with every pass if it managed to hit. This could quickly get out of control if the bibarel wasn't taken out fast! Dirt was kicked up as the rolling bibarel started to round again. Could they out last the damage? Could they knock it out of its roll? Only time would tell. Trainer Battle Weather:CLEAR [attr="class","qkt-bkgd"] [attr="class","qkt-wild-pkmn"] Totem Bibarel LV 12 HP 68% [30/44]

As the battle started, Avery finally appreciated what she was up against. The pokemon was larger than any she had faced before, and perhaps had ever even seen. Avery quickly got to work following Sara's orders to mega drain, but before they had even gotten their bearings out of the pokeball, Bibarel had started launching themselves into a frenzied roll with a quickness you wouldn't expect out of such a large animal. Sara winced as Avery was knocked backward, she knew that Avery wasn't used to being hit so harshly. "It's alright, Avery! Get back up and do your best!"
Avery glared at Sara, she didn't need to be told to do her best. This was a pokemon battle, and in here, strategy always triumphed over brute force. The spinning Bibarel was an easy target as it spun in a predictable way. Avery quickly started climbing onto the walls with their sticky gecko feet before kicking off the roof of the den and hitting the Bibarel with a fierce mega drain, leeching back the damage that the bibarel had just caused. "Nice work Avery!" Sara cheered. By this point Sara had gotten her pokedex out and could see the battlefield with clarity, the display on the pokedex screen indicated that bibarel had been injured slightly, but Avery had actually gained back all the health that she had lost.
"It's using Rollout, Avery! Do your best to avoid it, but keep the pressure up! If you can keep healing yourself, you'll wear them down!" Sara said with excitement. Sara had only been on her journey for a few months now, but she had a knack for understanding pokemon battles even if she didn't want to admit it. "Hit them hard with a few more Mega Drains!" Sara took a few steps back from the battlefield as the Bibarel carelessly rolled around the entirety of the den. Avery nodded to her trainer and prepared herself for the next few rounds of combat. Avery was a careful pokemon, but in this battle she could only do so much. Using her sticky feet, she leveraged her ability to scurry up walls quickly in hopes that the Bibarrel might not be able to roll into her, though in order to properly drain her foe she knew she would have to risk leaping down towards her foe.

Unfortunately for Avery, this totem pokemon was very agile. It seemed to hone in on him no matter where he went. No matter what rocks or walls or trees he climbed, that rolling force of nature chased him down. Faster. Faster. Faster. Barreling his way without a blink of hesitation. The next hit hurt more than the last, but as Avery clung momentarily to the raging totem, he drained some energy and felt marginally better. He leapt off and tried to scale a wall to put some distance between them, but that rolling ball went even faster it seemed, slamming into a rock to catapult itself the opposite direction and knocking Avery down again. It was a blow that emptied his little lungs of all oxygen. For a moment, it seemed like this was defeat. Over. Done. The Totem having won with a few swift blows. But as Avery caught his breath, he managed to draw away from energy and heal himself just enough to get back up again and shake himself off. No doubt he'd done a great deal of damage to his foe, but the rolling pokemon seemed unstoppable at the moment, a living force of nature that would plow down its every foe unless it was out sped and its reign of terror put to an end. However...before it could reach Avery again... The bibarel rolled past Avery and into a wall, carried by sheer momentum. There it sprawled. Revealing that indeed...it was defeated. After a moment, it would recover from its defeat and after nodding to the trainer, it would run off, vanishing from sight, leaving behind the prize... "Eep!" Sara shouted, leaping out of the way as the Bibarel barreled towards her. The totem Bibarel had seemingly already fainted by the time it collided with the wall, the momentum of its move carrying it forward even past its capacity to fight. Avery let out a single 'huff' which was all that she was comfortable with showing how much the battle had taken a toll on her. She sat on the floor for a moment, seemingly winded from the long battle, but then stood up on her hind legs.
The Bibarel quickly recovered from their fight and nodded at Sara before scurrying off further into the den. "Whoa... Is that the reward?" Sara said, spotting a small trinket on the floor. Avery took a cursory look around the den, ensuring that there were no more foes about to leap out and attack her from behind, then allowed her shoulders to slump down. She slowly pittered over toward Sara, who was marveling at their prize. "Check it out, Avery! They left behind this medal!" Sara said gleefully, presenting the small medal to Avery who gently placed a hand on it. Sara smiled and let the small Treecko pluck the medallion from her hands and marvel at it. "It was thanks to you! And Tartarus of course." Sara said gleefully. "I guess now that I have this I've proved that I'm a trainer worthy of Alola!" Sara said with a beaming smile. "Mom and Dad would be so surprised that I decided to take on the trials, and I'm not even at home in Alola anymore!" Sara said with a chuckle.
Avery contemplated their trainer's words, then handed the medallion back, satisfied with their inspection of it. "Maui and Kaui are gonna be shocked when I show them this!" Sara said with a grin. Avery let out a soft sigh and gently tugged on Sara's pant leg. "Huh? What's wrong Avery?" Sara asked calmly. Avery pointed at their Pokeball. "Don't you want to stay out for a while and stretch your legs?" Sara asked with a huffy face. Avery stared at Sara blankly for a second, then shook its head no. "GAh!" Sara said, defeatedly. "Alright alright, back you go," Sara said, pressing the button on the center of the Pokeball and taking Avery back into it. Sara looked around the den for a few seconds before a cold wind blew past her. "Alright, now that I'm alone this place is pretty creepy," Sara said, nervously. "I'm getting outta here!" She added and quickly and ran out of the den the way she came. Despite the heaping serving of malasada, she had just a little while ago, her stomach growled. "I wonder if Maui and Kaui will make me an Alolan lunch if I ask nicely!"
