Since we are about 4 months away from a new generation it feels like a good time to start up a discussion thread on the beginning of gen 9. I was originally going to skip S&V as outside of Legends Arceus I found the rest of gen 8 to be super underwhelming. Having said that after winning a small amount of money at alots in Cripple Creek I decided to get the dual pack since until BOTW2 comes out there was nothing else on the Switch I wanted. I am quite curious to see the open world concept as I felt the open areas in Legends Arceus had so much potential but the loading screens between areas and the limited number of cool areas to explore were a bit of a shame.
Anyways I am also quite curious to see what other changes they make. I just hope they don't do anything that makes it hard to transition onto here as a few of the rumors I heard regarding breeding in particular were a bit worrying.

Dunsparce and Girafarig are rumored to have evolutions in this one now. GirafarigSomeone's concept off the leaked image. Honestly, though? It looks more like a regional variant than a straight up evolution to me. IDK. I kinda wanted the whole "twin heads" thing from the beta days to come back if we got an evo. =/ Of course, it being a rumor there's no telling but it's supposed to be from a legitimate and "trusted" leaker. DunsparceIDK if it's a concept art based off a leaked image or a leaked concept?? I dunno how much we can trust this one, though. But poor little snaky needs something. xD It's oh so loved as it is right now, ya know?

Better safe that sorry, so putting it all in spoilers. I have had so much trouble with girafarig design wise, and I did not like it with two head, so I really hope that will not happen Girafarig has grown on my after I got one on another site and fell in love with that ones personality. As for the one you have posted, I could get used to it like I have done with so many other pokemon. As for the dunsparce, its okay? I would probably have preferred the dunsparce in it self got an evo instead of a regional on top of that. I wonder if its move pool changes and destroys my current plans for it. We'll see if its true or not. And old news, I really, really hope the grass starter stays on all fours when evolving! I really like it, as I did with litten and fennekin and all the others fourlegged who for some annoying reason all needs to become bidepal. Pawni is cute on its pictures, not sure of the game screenshots, there it just looks like a spinoff of yamper.

Well, I think it's about time I added my two cents here. And since this is all purely speculation and my personal opinions, I'm not gonna bother with the spoiler tags or whatever. First of all, I actually really enjoyed Legends Arceus and I hope they keep its mechanics for gen 9 and onward. Meaning, no breeding, no HMs, and especially no EVs or IVs. Seriously, I cannot tell you how much I HATE EVs and IVs. Legends Arceus' new system with the grit items is a fine substitute, and anyone who disagrees is a try hard. In Legends Arceus, if you have two Pokemon, same species, same nature, same level, same number of grit items used, their stats are identical. And that's exactly what I like to see. So, GAME FREAK, if you're watching out there, PLEASE keep these changes! You can't tell, but I'm begging you on my knees as I'm typing this! Secondly, I find it hard to believe that GAME FREAK could make the level up movesets for the past Pokemon worse than they did in gen 8. So, I don't think we have much to worry about there. But people, don't get upset when not every Pokemon from the past is here. If they couldn't do it in gen 8, then it certainly won't happen here. Sad to say, but the number of Pokemon is simply too big for all species to make an appearance in any game between now and the future. I mean, they might make a really big Pokemon game at some point that incorporates every single Pokemon ever, but it would have to be a VERY big game. No skin off my nose though. I play new Pokemon games for the NEW Pokemon. Seriously, people. Expand your horizons. Don't just cling to the same Pokemon you've been clinging to for generations now. Thirdly, I actually hope they stop the whole regional variants thing. It was fun for a little while, but in the end, I think it's just a waste of time. It would be easier to just make all new Pokemon, or give evolutions to previous Pokemon that are unloved. I don't care much for Girafarig, but I do hope Dunsparce gets an evolution in gen 9. I think it'd be cool. Additionally, I'm also hoping for evolutions for Skarmory, Seviper, Zangoose, and several others that I feel deserve them. And while I'm on the topic of evolutions, I also really hope that GAME FREAK just decides to go the extra mile and give us an Eeveelution for every type that doesn't already have one. Fighting, Poison, Ground, Flying, Bug, Rock, Ghost, Dragon, and Steel. Exactly half of the types have one already, but I think the Evolution Pokemon deserves an evolution for each type. Next up, new Pokemon type combinations. As I'm sure you can all guess, I'm mainly keeping an eye out for new Poison and Bug type combos. And as things stand, there are only three each that don't exist in the world of Pokemon. Poison/Normal, Poison/Ice, and Poison/Steel. Bug/Normal, Bug/Dark, and Bug/Dragon. Are they perfect? No. But I still think they'd be awesome! Just look at Rhyperior. Six weaknesses, two of which are quads, but everyone seems to really enjoy that Pokemon. And as far as species go, I'm pretty much cool with anything, but I definitely have some preferences. For example, I really hope that the Bug/Dragon type is not a dragonfly. That's entirely too heavy handed, and we all know that GAME FREAK can do better than that. Besides, we already have Yanmega. And for the Poison/Ice type, I'm actually hoping that it's a shark. Seriously, we need another shark Pokemon! Sharpedo's design with the no tail is killing me! Also, Greenland Sharks live in frigid waters and their flesh is toxic. C'mon! That'd be perfect! And finally, my last hope for gen 9, is that we finally get some new Pokemon based off animal species in this world that haven't been represented yet. Specifically, a peacock and a dolphin. I mean, COME ON! How are we now entering gen 9, but these two well-known and highly beloved animals still don't have Pokemon counterparts yet?! Also, a platypus. They're unused and poisonous. I think they'd make a fine Pokemon as well. Perhaps one of my new Poison type combos. So, peacock, dolphin, and platypus. Make 'em happen, GAME FREAK! Lastly, I definitely wouldn't mind a few new Pokemon for previous type combos that were kind of underwhelming. Like Nihilego. Maybe it's just me, but I'd like a Poison/Rock type that's not an ultra beast or a legend. Additionally, we could really use a new Bug/Ground type. The only one we have now is Nincada, and no offense to the Trainee Pokemon or anything, but we can definitely do better. Like a Bug/Ground type that keeps that typing at its final stage evolution. Okay, I think that's everything. Sorry for the long-winded comment, everyone. I've got a lot of hopes and dreams that I'd like fulfilled here. I have faith that at least a few of them will get fulfilled here, but regardless of how many, I'm definitely looking forward to Scarlet and Violet. Just like I do every new generation of Pokemon.

I was going to skip these as well, as I have been severely underwhelmed overall by new games. I loved X and Y, those were the last ones I really really loved. Sun and Moon were good, as far as what they progressed with, but overall I just... couldn't get into them. I didn't finish it. Same with Sword and Shield. Good games, I just hit a wall where I didn't feel like continuing. But this game? It looks so much like exactly what I've been wanting! So I definitely am getting it now, just not sure which.
I haven't heard anything about breeding mechanics, so that's intriguing. But I will say that if something changes that is really difficult to implement on an RP, then you guys don't necessarily have to force it. Change isn't bad, but keeping some systems that make sense as is isn't bad either. Just a little food for thought there.
A lot of this is speculation, so I'm not getting myself too worked up. But I agree with the fire starter going bipedal. I just don't understand their obsession with this. The reason why I love Kanto and Johto starters to this day is because they didn't try to make them anthromorphic. Not really. Sure, Charizard is on two legs, but that's because it's in the style of a western dragon. Blastoise is a huge turtle, definitely not some kind of crazy fight looking thing. Same with Feraligatr, it's an alligator monster. But then after that it was just... fighty fight bipedal anthro looking things. So odd to me.
Yeah, I'm excited to see the game when it's done being developed and releases!

Personally, I love breeding since I've loved it all the way back in Gen II with Gold/Silver. What I don't like is the aggressive IV/EV breeding. I wouldn't be upset if we got rid of each wild Pokemon's stats being so different from each other's based on what you catch (verses what you use) and left breeding capabilities for simpler things like egg moves. Venominon I do totally get your point on the whole competitive breeding aspects when it comes to IV/EVs and such, though. I just...couldn't get into that and would finish the game (and/or start over to enjoy it all over again with a different starter) was too much to really get into the more competitive aspect of breeding. I did also try to do some shiny breeding buuuuttttt that doesn't keep my attention, either. xD I just like to breed occasionally. I really love Daycare even if it isn't breeding just for the extra levels and such and finding an egg (at least the first couple of times) is exciting. But the whole "buff baby" jokes of people who take breeding to the extreme....haha yeah, that's just trying way too much for a game that's supposed to be a simple, fun playthrough (and for kids).

Well, the latest Pokemon official video has just dropped. I haven't found one of just Scarlet and Violet but they will be showing up soon. The Scarlet and Violet portion is the back half of the video starting around the 9 min mark. I won't talk about any great details in the video yet to let others watch it. The video does cover other Pokemon games if you all have interest in them. All I will say is part of me is disappointed in how you are moving around the map since there seems to be no challenge in it. Just remember, as mention at the end of the video, is things can and probably will change especially when it comes to names. One thing I do agree with Venom about is the whole regional forms. Sure, the first time in Alola was somewhat interesting of "what if" but having new regional variations show up in every game since then is getting old.

Well, if the legendaries are the only way of getting around, they are a huge turn off for me. I do not like their tires and especially the red one's flying form is just making it worse... Other than that it looks interesting enough, sounds big if there is more stories to do than just the usual one. The new evoluytion method looks like a mix of gigantimax and mega evolution, I don't need it, and from little to know knowledge about how it will work, I think it will be rather complicated to introduce here, if not impossible. Could be fun for a bit to go hunt for some of the special ones, but I doubt it will held my interest. I hope the multiplayer is actaully a multiplayer, since then I'd buy it to play with my friends. Let's go version was rather disappointed when I learned how it worked.

They did say there is technically three campaigns with the primary being the standard\traditional gym. I was hoping a reintroduction of coordinators\contests for at least one of the other two. My biggest gripe about the video is practically nothing about the actual story line outside of some NPCs and the three campaigns. There is an assumption, and probably confirmed by art design, that one is set in the past and one in the future. If this is true, I want to know how it would work. I would care less if it is multiplayer since I doubt I would ever find anyone to play with even if I had the switch and games. If the legendary Pokemon are only there for transportation and maybe battles, then why call them legendary? I can suspect that there are those out there from the earlier games who are disappointed that the legendary are often times at the end and once you get them, there is no real need for them. At the same time, getting the legendary at the very start makes it feel like getting a rattata or pidgey on your very first route.

Well regional variants are here to stay. Wooper has a confirmed one on Pokemon's main site. Maybe I'm the odd ball but I love regional variants (maybe a little more than a thousand totally new Pokemon). I like seeing how Pokemon can have new adaptations for their environments and sometimes, it's just nice to see some under appreciated ones get a new look and being them back in the light. I'm not exactly fond of already overly popular mons getting a variant though - I actually didn't like Vulpix/Ninetales or Raichu's for example. Here's Wooper: I kind of like it but I wanna see the evolution's too before I make my judgement. Galar's regionals were better than Alolas on some of them (NOT you Meowth! Actually both meowth's suck and Alola Persian I feel ruined Persian's whole cool cat vibe).

Well I thought the new thing... I forget what it's called already. The crystal thing is cool looking, but I don't see the need for it really. It's just another gimmick, and I honestly feel like at this point that's one of the things they're relying on to make each new title "new and different." But at the end of the day, they're just gimmicks, and I feel that's a lazy way to try to make something different. And I don't think it's necessary to bring that over here at all.
Regional varieties aren't necessarily horrible, I just don't always like them. But I don't like other pokemon, so that's not a big deal.
My big complaint? The legendaries. First off... vehicles? No thanks. Just... no thanks. Give us actual motorcycles or something, I dunno. But not that. And on top of that... are we getting those from the beginning then? Because if so, that kind of removes their value of "legendary" to me. I mean think about it. You're a brand new trainer, green, and a legendary looks at you and goes "yup this is THE ONE."
My big hype? Open world game. I know people are saying that there's no way the gyms are scaling based on your team, and I kind of agree with that. I don't think they're going to scale based on your team. I think they're going to scale based on the number of badges you have. It wouldn't really be that complicated for them to do. Have eight different variations of a leader's team, and the team that they use depends on the number of badges you've already acquired. And this could go for wild pokemon in the routes too. The spawns on the routes vary depending on the number of badges you have. I don't think this is impossible or even a large stretch of capability. Now this is entirely speculative on my part, and maybe I'm giving them too much credit, but I really think it's a possibility that's worth considering. Either way, I'm glad that we'll be able to explore the region and do stuff as we see fit. ALSO the fact that we have a few different story routes to explore is awesome.
Overall, I am actually really pleased with what I saw in the video. Sure, the legendaries might be a thorn for me, but I can deal with it! Looking forward to more stuff coming for sure.

wow um Cons: I hate to talk about graphics but... man it looks rough still. The pokemon character models are so nice looking relative to the environment, which is kind of jarring for me. Also in the trailer for some reason the audio quality of the character talking to the Hunger Games-esque gallery of students was rough. Pros: I like most of the pokemon designs that I've seen thus far though (Except for the legendaries but I don't really think there are many legendaries I actually like so not really a con to me. ) The NPCs all look really cute! I love Meowth, treasure Persian I am okay with Other thoughts: I'm curious how open-world pokemon will feel. I'm not opposed to the idea, but I also don't really trust Game Freak, I feel like each time they have increased the 'scope' of their games, it has not gone well. I didn't like the wild area from Sword and Shield, and I felt that Legends Arceus got old fast. Hopefully, they blow me away, but honestly, I wish they would slow down their production cycle a little bit and just put some polish into their games. Sw+Sh was close to being a good game, but the wild area was so forgettable, and the routes were also super forgettable. I wish they had not included a wild area and increased the size of each of the routes since the routes actually had some interesting theming to them. Arceus was an interesting idea, but the fact you could just catch pokemon kind of made the journey and selection of pokemon a lot more trivial. I didn't ever feel very attached to any of my pokemon in that game, something which I always try to leave a pokemon game with is "My Team" from the game, and I didn't ever really find anything that I felt wasn't worth replacing immediately with a wild pokemon 20 levels higher. I also wish every game coming out these days didn't just look like a knock-off Breath of the Wild.

Okay. Let's see. Where do I begin with all this new info? Well, for starters, I can see that regional variants are back. -Sigh- I suppose they're just here to stay now. Whatever. I don't like 'em, but I don't hate 'em either. I just think they're REALLY unnecessary. I mean, Paldean Wooper could've just as easily been a completely new Poison/Ground type. As I said in my previous comment, regional variants were fun for a little while, but in the end, I feel they're just a waste of time. Sad to say, but in order for there to be winners in this world, there have to be losers too. And not all Pokemon can be as popular as Charizard or Greninja. Giving some unloved Pokemon a new typing, abilities, looks, moves, etc. might help a little, but at the end of the day it's just the same candy with a different wrapper. That said, I have to admit, I am curious to see where Paldean Wooper and the other regional variants will go. I mean, are we gonna get a Paldean Quagsire? A whole new evolution? Or both? Like Galarian Zigzagoon, Linoone, and Obstagoon. Paldean Wooper -> Paldean Quagsire -> Entirely new Pokemon? Next up, the legends. Now, I already knew that they were gonna be ridable vehicles of some kind, but I'm not sure how I feel about us getting them right at the beginning of the game. Granted, I'm sure we won't be able to battle with them right away. I mean, c'mon. That'd be entirely too OP to have a legend right at the beginning of the game. But personally, I find it to be rather unrealistic that a legendary Pokemon sees a greenhorn trainer, decides that he/she is worthy, and agrees to become their mount just like that. What makes that trainer so special? -Shrug- Meh. I don't know. Maybe the story will explain that. It's not really a big issue for me. And design-wise, I actually think they're pretty cool. And I'd rather ride around on a Pokemon than a real motorcycle any day. Moving on, the new gimmick. The Terastal phenomenon. Personally, as far as this goes, I agree with DarkSlayer . I don't really see a need for it. I mean, what even is the point? Yeah, it makes our Pokemon stronger, but so did Mega Evolution, and back in X and Y, my Pokemon defeated mega evolved Pokemon in battle all the time and fairly easily. And much like Mega Evolution, I'm probably not even gonna bother with this new gimmick. If the raid dens have TMs available as prizes like back in Sword and Shield, I'll probably take them on just for that. But otherwise, no thanks. Also, I gotta wonder why GAME FREAK is even bothering with these new gimmicks anymore. I mean, at their cores, they're all basically the same. Just power ups for Pokemon. And honestly, we really don't need 'em. It's a brand new Pokemon game, with a brand-new region, new characters, and new Pokemon. If ya ask me, that's wow enough. And if that's not enough for some people, well then, that's their loss. Go ahead and sit this one out. Meanwhile, I'll be happily exploring this new territory and collecting some new Pokemon while I'm at it. And last, but certainly not least. The open world gameplay. Honestly, I'm kinda 50/50 on that. On the one hand, I always like for there to be some kind of order to the games I play. I mean, being able to go wherever we want whenever we want does sound fun, but also kinda chaotic to me. And it kinda drops the suspense factor in my opinion. But on the other hand, I'm kind of an impatient guy, and with this, I can just build whatever team I want right away. No waiting. Plus, it makes everything feel more realistic. I mean, c'mon. In the actual world of Pokemon, we wouldn't let some trees, rocks, or random people block our path. We don't need HMs or anyone's permission to go where we want. Pokemon don't need HMs to cut down trees, smash rocks, fly through the sky, or swim across the ocean. And if some random guy blocks your path, just go around him. Sneak through the trees, use Dig to go under him, or fly over him with a Pokemon. Or if you're feeling violent, use a big and menacing Pokemon to make him step aside. Additionally, I'm also curious to see how the gyms will play out in these games. Once again, I agree with DarkSlayer . I think it'll be something like the more badges you have, the higher the difficulty will be for the next one. As well as the world around us as a whole. The school setting is a nice touch too. I just hope we're not stuck wearing these lame uniforms for the whole game. I understand that it's a school and it has a dress code, but my character is definitely gonna need some better threads. I'm also curious to see what the other two campaigns will be too. One of them is obviously the gyms, but what about the other two? Also, just one more thing I feel I have to mention. And I apologize, but I'm about to get very savage. So, sorry if I upset anyone here. -Deep breath- OH MY ARCEUS! ENOUGH ALREADY! I am so damn tired of people complaining about something as trivial as graphics and comparing the newer Pokemon games to Breath of the Wild! First of all, who the hell cares?! The graphics are fine! Stop asking for the moon and just be happy that we're getting another Pokemon game! I'm sure GAME FREAK is doing the best they can, but not all video games can have the best graphics that technology can manage in this day and age! Do you people have any idea how much time and money that would take?! GAME FREAK might be one of the most successful gaming companies in the world, but even they have limits! And again, I say, the graphics are fine! And anyone who disagrees is definitely no friend of mine! And secondly, this is Pokemon! It is not Breath of the Wild! It never was Breath of the Wild! And it's never gonna be Breath of the Wild! Yes, they're similar, but the only thing they really have in common is the whole open world thing! Otherwise, they couldn't be more different! And personally, I hate Breath of the Wild and the Legend of Zelda series as a whole! I think it's boring, stupid, and incredibly overrated! And Pokemon does the open world thing better in every way! And every other way! So, to the entire Pokemon fanbase, I have this to say! STOP COMPARING POKEMON TO BREATH OF THE WILD!!!!!!! If anything, it's like a Pokemon version of Monster Hunter Stories! Now that is a good series! -Deep breath- I'm sorry you all had to see that. Those two things have just always been real hot buttons for me.
